Bournemouth 1 Brentford 0: First bite to the Cherries as Arnaut Danjuma strike gives Woodgate’s men play-off advantage

BOURNEMOUTH are 90 minutes from Wembley after a dominant display over Brentford in their play-off semi-final first leg.Arnaut Danjuma grabbed the winner in the 55th minute but the Cherries wasted several chances to kill off the Bees in front of 2,000 fans on the South Coast.

Instead, they still have a job to do in West London at the weekend to move one step closer to an instant Premier League return.
Brentford know all about coming from behind in play-off semis after doing so last year against Swansea before eventually losing in the final to Fulham.
But Thomas Frank’s men will be left battered, bruised and bereft of confidence after failing to lay a finger on Jonathan Woodgate’s Bournemouth.
Brentford came into this semi on a 12-game unbeaten run and winning their last three games of the season – while the hosts had lost their last three.

But it was Bournemouth – in front of home fans for the first time this season – who came out the blocks quickest as Lloyd Kelly’s whipped balls into the box in behind Brentford’s wing-backs proved dangerous.
David Brooks’ perfectly weighted pass for Adam Smith down the right then saw Philip Billing slice a cut-back wide.
Another Kelly cross then found the head of Dominic Solanke at the near post only for the ball to thump the side-netting.
Fifteen-goal Solanke looked far more likely to score than record-breaking 31-goal star Ivan Toney – who had failed to net against Bournemouth in their two league encounters this campaign.

Toney was starved of space and ball and was forced to drop deep – but could not account for his team-mates giving the opposition a helping hand.
Tarique Fosu-Henry’s slip sparked a speedy counter from Solanke, only for the ex-Chelsea and Liverpool striker to waste the breakaway with a poor pass.
Skipper Steve Cook then forced David Raya into a diving save with a header before Toney did his job at the back with a crucial block to deny Brooks tapping in the rebound.
That proved to be Cook’s last significant action as he limped off with a knee injury, while Toney had as many blocks as shots on goal heading into the break.
And his frustrations grew nine 10 minutes into the second half as a loose ball from out-of-position Pontus Jansson allowed Bournemouth to counter again – this time with an end result.

Brooks drove from the half way line and had Billing, Solanke and Danjuma ashead of him, choosing to slide in the later as he curled into the bottom corner.
Frank reacted by making a triple change of Bryan Mbeumo, Emiliano Marcondes and Rico Henry – but the visitors’ attack remained blunt.
Their biggest chance was the best of the whole game in the 76th minute – Mbeumo somehow shanking wide in front of an open goal after Christian Norgaard’s cross.
Danjuma almost doubled his tally with a late free-kick but was well saved by Raya.
A decade on from their last experience of the play-offs, and the Cherries have the sweet taste of the promised land on their tongues once more.

    THE TEAMSHEETS ARE IN!
    TENTH ATTEMPT
Brentford are featuring in their 10th attempt at the Football League play-offs, and second in as many seasons in the Championship, with only Preston featuring in as many campaigns (also 10).
However, the Bees have never been promoted via the play-offs, with their previous nine attempts the most without winning promotion in the history of the Football League play-offs.
    FANS ARE BACK
2,300 fans will be allowed inside the Vitality Stadium tonight!
    BACK-TO-BACK
Brentford made it to the Championship play-off final last season, but lost to Fulham.
Frank’s teams’ failure to get promoted saw standout players Said Benrahma move to West Ham and Ollie Watkins to Aston Villa.
But this time, he’ll be hoping his team can go all the way and finally find themselves in the top flight.
And with record breaker Ivan Toney at his disposal, anything is possible!

    DANJUMA SPEAKS
Bournemouth ace Arnaut Danjuma dissected the season ahead of tonight’s play-off semi-final in an interview with afcb.co.uk.
The 24-year-old played a massive role in Bournemouth’s success, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists earning himself a place in the Championship’s team of the season.
He said: “Looking back, I think we have been through a lot of highs and lows.
“I was a little disappointed we dropped back to finish sixth after we had already secured a play-off place and Brentford will be a tough team to beat.
“We have quality and determination and there is a lot of talent in the group. We’ve been performing well recently, although not so well in the past three games so there is still a bit to improve on.
“We were well below our standards in those three games but there were also a lot of games where we put in good performances, especially against the top six.
“We did the double over the champions Norwich and took four points off Watford and Swansea. We won 4-0 at Barnsley and Brentford were the only team in the top six to beat us twice.
“Over the course of the season, we performed well against most of the higher-placed teams and struggled against some of the teams in the lower half.
“Overall, I’m happy we’re in the play-offs. That was our goal once we knew we couldn’t win the title or finish second and our aim now is to win the play-offs and return to the Premier League.”
    FINAL FOUR
This will be Bournemouth’s third Football League play-off campaign, winning the fourth-tier play-off final in 2002-03 against Lincoln but going out in the semi-finals in the 2010-11 League One play-offs against Huddersfield Town on penalties after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD
Bournemouth lost both of their Championship matches against Brentford this season, with the Bees one of only two teams to complete the league double over the Cherries in 2020-21, along with relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
In their 1-0 home defeat to Brentford in April, Bournemouth managed just four shots, their fewest in a home league game all season despite playing the last 40 minutes with an extra man after Bees’ Pontus Jansson was sent off.
    GOOD AFTERNOON
And welcome to the live blog for Bournemouth vs Brentford!
Bournemouth host Brentford at the Vitality Stadium in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.
And Jonathan Woodgate’s side are looking to return to the Premier League on the first time of asking.
Brentford, on the other hand, are looking to get promoted to the top division for the first time, whilst righting the wrongs of last season’s play-off final upset at the hands of Fulham.
The home side, however, are coming into tonight’s game off the back of three successive defeats.
Whereas Brentford, are unbeaten in 12 Championship games.
In terms of team news, Junior Stanislas could be passed fit for tonight’s game.
Jack Wilshere could also come into the side, bolstering Woodgate’s midfield.
And for Brentford, boss Thomas Frank has several first-team players missing.
Henrik Dalsgaard, Rico Henry and midfielder Josh Dasilva will all miss out through injury.
And Frenchman Mbuemo could come back into the starting line-up, replacing Sergi Canos.
The teamsheets are due to be released in half an hour, so don’t go anywhere!

Do away goals count in Championship play-offs, and are extra time and penalties used if ties finish level?

THE away goals rule has become the most common way to decide a two-legged tie in football. It was introduced by Uefa in 1965 and has been a feature of competitions ever since, but is the rule used in the EFL play-offs?
The EFL play-offs are back and as unpredictable as everCredit: Getty
Do away goals count in the EFL play-offs?
Away goals do not count double in the EFL play-offs.
The Football League did use the rule but chose to abolish it in 1999.
This decision was made after an initiative by then-Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks.
Sheepshanks’ Tractor Boys lost via the rule in 1997 and 1999 despite finishing higher than their opponents in the league on both occasions.
What is the away goals rule?
The away goals rule is the most commonly used way of deciding football matches played over two legs.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes at home and 90 minutes away then, rather than go to penalties, the team that scored most goals in the away game goes through.
The idea is to reward away teams who choose to play attacking football.
Do away goals really count double?
That expression is supposed to be the law, but it’s really more of a figure of speech.
It simply means that away goals are the first decider for a tied two-leg match.
If anything, it is like an extra half a goal for the team that scored more away from home.
Which competitions use the away goals rule?
The Champions League and the Europa League, as well as all South American competitions, use the away goals rule to decide ties that are level after two legs.
The League Cup did use away goals after extra time in the semi-finals but has now abolished the rule, with teams playing penalties after 90 minutes.
Is the away goals rule popular?
The rule has survived for 51 years by generally being seen as the fairest way to decide a two-leg match.
But it has prominent critics such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Sepp Blatter, who say it was designed for a different age.
They believe the rule was only appropriate for the longer away trips of decades ago, where games would be played on dreadful pitches and playing at home was a key advantage.
The Uefa version of the rule is also believed, by some, to be unfair because the team that plays away second can get 30 minutes more to score an away goal than the home team if the tie goes to extra-time.
Occasionally, there is even the bizarre scenario of two matches at the same stadium being decided on away goals, for example when AC Milan knocked Inter out of the Champions League in 2003.
The first leg at the San Siro, when AC Milan were technically at home, finished 0-0.
And the second leg finished 1-1 at the same venue, which meant AC qualified. More

But the 73-year-old has no intention of retiring and is now believed to be on the Baggies’ radar.
Allardyce has the chance to carry on at The Hawthorns, despite being relegated from the Premier League for the first time in his career.
He said: “Myself and the club going forward will put everything to bed before the end of the season and see where we go from there.
“There’s no decision that has been made yet. I can’t make a decision quickly on this, it’s not one I can make. The decision will be made before the end of the season.
“There’s a lot to discuss and go through, a lot to divulge.
“The shock for me is that I can’t get my head around it because I never expected it.”
If Allardyce, 66, does not continue, Hodgson will be sounded out about a return to West Brom, nine years after leaving the Midlands club.
