A first-half own-goal from Huddersfield defender Levi Colwill was enough to settle the richest football match on Earth – and the Terriers were fuming at being denied a second-half penalty.
But the Tricky Trees will be back next season – at the Etihad, the Emirates and White Hart Lane, taunting the high and mighty with cries of “Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that!”.

And a stunning late surge of league form, which almost won Forest automatic promotion, ended with Cooper’s men snatching play-off glory at Wembley.
Forest celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the first of their two European Cup victories tomorrow, knowing that they are back where they belong after an entire generation in the second and third tiers of the English game.
Huddersfield, who had finished third under Carlos Corberan, have enjoyed an outstanding season but they couldn’t repeat their play-off victory of 2017.
For Forest’s supporters, this was a first Wembley appearance in 30 years and it felt as if they were making up for lost time.

They were noisy enough on the tube. Inside Wembley, the din from the red end was cacophonous.
While Cooper’s side made most of the early running, as Huddersfield defended with shape and conviction, it was a cautious, edgy affair.
You could almost see the thought bubbles above each head – “one slip and it’s £180million down the pan”.
Ryan Yates headed wide from a free-kick and then blazed over from the edge of the box.
Djed Spence was lively on the right but without an end product.
Sorba Thomas was Huddersfield’s attacking outlet but aside from one cross-shot, pushed out by Brice Samba, the Terriers produced nothing in the first half.
When the goal arrived, three minutes from half-time, it was suitably scruffy.

James Garner attempted a shot from range, Jack Colback ducked out of the way and Colwill, a teenaged Chelsea loanee, diverted it in off his knee under pressure from Yates.
With containment no longer an option, Huddersfield were far more urgent and purposeful after the break.
Jonathan Hogg headed wide at the near post from a corner and Thomas was always threatening to ignite something.
And 17 minutes from time, Carlos Corberan’s side thought they had a penalty when Colback stuck a leg out and clipped Harry Toffolo.
Yet ref Jon Moss, on his swansong appearance, made the bold decision to book Toffolo for diving.
The Terriers man was certainly looking for it, yet there was contact.
Either way, VAR Paul Tierney backed his colleague and Forest had got away with one.
It was the same story when Max Lowe brought down Lewis O’Brien in the box with what appeared to be a clumsy challenge.
Again the on-field decision was no penalty, and again VAR Tierney agreed.
Forest had to dig in, long and hard, after that.
They lost keeper Samba to injury in the final minutes but his replacement Ethan Horvath avoided any late scares.

Rags to riches
Huddersfield Town’s Sorba Thomas has experienced an incredible turnaround over the past two years.
16 months ago, he was working 13-hour shifts on scaffolding sites while also turning out for non-league side Boreham Wood.
But in January 2021 he signed his first professional deal with Huddersfield.
He has likened the sensational transition to a blockbuster movie, and believes his rags to riches tale could earn a place on the big screen.
He joked: “I feel like I’m living in a movie right now and If they ever make a film of this story then I’d like Will Smith to play me!
“I worked for a year at a sports shop in Oxford Circus selling footy boots and then moved into the scaffolding trade with regular 6am starts in freezing conditions. I didn’t enjoy it at all and it doubled my determination to make it as a footballer but I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s all part of my journey.”

Huddersfield’s road to Wembley
The Terriers kicked off their 2021/22 campaign with a 1-1 draw with now-relegated Derby County on the opening day of the season.
A week later they were subject to a 5-1 defeat to Fulham which sparked a resurgence as Corberan’s side went on to win their next three consecutive games.
By the end of 2021, the Terriers were in the play-off positions but faced fierce competition from the likes of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Nottingham Forest.
Then 2022 arrived – and so did a consistent run of form.
Huddersfield only lost two of the 20 Championship games they played in 2022. This superb feat saw them finish third in the table.
Things only got better as the play-offs came around.
The Terriers were put up against underdogs Luton Town. The Hatters put up an impressive fight, but ultimately Corberan’s team were too much to handle, and Huddersfield scraped through with a 2-1 win on aggregate.
Nottingham Forest’s road to Wembley
It would be fair to say that Steve Cooper’s turnaround of Nottingham Forest this season has been nothing short of remarkable.
In September he took over a team that was rock bottom of the Championship table and put them in seventh place by the time Christmas came around.
Cooper instilled a new level of confidence into the squad and encouraged better possession-based play.
His efforts led the side to finish fourth in the Championship table, comfortably in the play-off places.
Forest narrowly edged past Sheffield United in the semi-finals to earn a deserved place in the final at Wembley.
Along the way, Cooper and his team stunned Arsenal, Leicester City and Huddersfield Town to progress to the FA Cup quarter-final where they were narrowly defeated by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
It has been a season to remember for the Reds, and earning that all-important place in the Premier League would be the icing on the cake.

When speaking to NottinghamshireLive ahead of the game, Cooper said:
“If there was one way of playing well and winning at Wembley, we’d all be doing it. But unfortunately nobody has found that way yet.
“What I do know is, we are the club and the team that we are. We are very proud of it and we believe in what we’re doing, so let’s take it to Wembley and try to do our thing.
“We are at this final, in this magnificent stadium, in this high-pressured game because we have done things a certain way.
“We have to continue as much as we can with that, while understanding the context of the game.
“But it’s really important for the players to realise we are in this position because of doing what we’ve done, and that’s committing to a way of playing and a way of working.
“Let’s try to be the best version of that possible, because that will give us the best chance of winning.
“The mood in training has been really good. We’ve stuck to the schedule we planned a while ago, and we’ve stuck to the work-load.
“You’re always tweaking some stuff from a day to day basis – that’s just normal operational stuff. But there’s been no real surprises for the players.
“Within that, there’s been a really positive attitude and atmosphere. But also very focused.”

“The first game we played against them they were under another coach and they played 4-3-3, but they’ve since gone to a line of three.
“Last time we played in the league we both played a back four, and now the game on Sunday I think is going to be more similar to the game we played in the cup.
“But you can predict the first XI and it doesn’t mean anything.
“Both coaches can more or less predict the first XI of the teams and we’ve seen which players we use in important games, but the most important thing is how we adapt to the different contexts of the game, reduce their strengths and put our strengths forward.”
“It’s a big game and I’m looking forward to it, but I’m not proud of just getting there. I can give you that answer after the game.
“When you play a final you want to win the final and we want to beat Nottingham Forest and achieve something unbelievable.
“I’ve found a good balance between spending time being calm and spending time working towards the final.”

Johnson Sr believes Forest will prevail against a Huddersfield team who will try to spoil their opponents’ attacking football.

I remember those days in the top division and used to wear a No 22 Forest shirt with Bryan Roy’s name on the back, hoping to one day break into the team myself.
It’s unbelievable to think the club are one win away from returning to the big time.
Only a year ago I was in that dressing room with most of these lads.
And to see where they’ve got to and the job manager Steve Cooper has done, is nothing short of sensational.
When you think they were bottom of the Championship when he walked in and now it all comes down to a play-off final against a Huddersfield side who have also done brilliantly too.
As a player who came through the youth ranks to break into the first team, it’s wonderful to see that academy graduates have played a huge part in this turnaround.

He went on loan to Lincoln last year and has been incredible in his breakthrough season.

As first-team players, we want to be coached, we want to improve and sometimes that does not happen. But Steve has got the best out of Ryan.
Him and midfielder James Garner complement each other so well.
You have to give the manager a lot of credit.

The team has more freedom and they just go out there to win, believing they can score goals.

And after scoring a spectacular winner against Luton to set up tomorrow’s £200million winner-takes-all final with Nottingham Forest, he told SunSport: “Getting into the Premier League with Huddersfield would be a fairytale.”
The Scot returned after being released by Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation from the Championship.
Asked if he thought then the team were realistically going to mount a promotion challenge, Rhodes said: “No one set going up as a target but it was something that became more probable.
“We’ve ended third in the league and are now in the play-off final.”

Rhodes, 32, was already a Terriers legend for his previous exploits. They included scoring an eight-minute hat-trick of headers against Exeter in 2010 — beating Dixie Dean’s record at Everton from the 1930s.
He became the first Huddersfield player to net back-to-back hat-tricks since the 1920s in 2011. The striker was top scorer three seasons in a row and won League One player of the season in 2012.
And he said: “I returned because of the great memories — being able to walk out on a pitch where I’ve scored goals, played well and had seasons where we’d been successful as a club.

“It’ll be fantastic for the whole club and town to get that win on Sunday.”
Rhodes suffered a fractured back after two league games and sat out four months.
And he admitted: “I overdid it in the summer — trained hard to come back in the best physical shape but I had this niggling injury in pre-season and couldn’t shake it off.
“I had it scanned, got the bad news and had a few months doing nothing because there’s not much you can do with a fractured back.
“But the body is now feeling better — nice and fresh — because I had that good rest.”
Rhodes has played a supporting role since returning — making 17 substitute appearances in the league and six starts.
But he is in form with three goals in his last five games.
He said: “I always strive to do my best — whether that be helping people out day to day, encouraging them, being enthusiastic.
“If there’s a role to start then great but if it’s coming off the bench to impact the game, whether it be to see out a match, score or create a chance, I’m happy to do that, too.

“Everything I do is geared to hopefully getting Huddersfield promotion.”
Rhodes has certainly made an impact. In the 793 Championship minutes he has played, the team have scored 17 goals and conceded only six — and in all the time he has spent on the pitch since January the team have let in just one.
He laughed: “That makes me sound like a good defensive striker. But the one thing I’ve got better at and developed is being a nuisance — throwing myself around and being annoying for the defenders.
“As I’ve gotten older, every ball matters when it’s up there. Even when it’s not in my favour, I can tip it our way.
“If I can’t win the ball, hopefully it drops to someone else in the team.”
Huddersfield also have players with Wembley experience.
Rhodes, himself, played in the League One final against Sheffield United when Huddersfield won promotion ten years ago — and admits it will help ahead of this weekend’s clash.

“Jonathan Hogg got promoted with Huddersfield to the Premier League in the play-offs five years ago.
“Fraizer Campbell went up with Hull. Duane Holmes was injured but was involved with Derby.
“Tom Lees has been there with Sheffield Wednesday. Hopefully that’ll take away any nerves or apprehension.”
Boss Carlos Corberan has done a fantastic job this season after a difficult first year.
Rhodes admitted: “He doesn’t get close to us on a human level but definitely does on a professional one.
“There are meetings every day before and after training. We have one-to-one time, too.
“It’s always made clear exactly what the manager wants. There’s never a day we don’t interact with him.”
But how does he cope as an older player with Corberan’s gruelling training sessions?

The Terriers ace said: “It helps us older ones more because we’re keeping our bodies moving and high speeds up.
“Every individual has his own target to hit. I’ve never had that scenario but it keeps me in the best physical shape I’ve ever been.”
After beating Luton in the semi-finals, Huddersfield flew to Portugal for warm-weather training in the Algarve — and the players took their families.
Rhodes said: “It was fantastic to see the lads with their wives, girlfriends and families and seeing the dynamics of that, such as each other’s children playing together.
“I don’t think too many people spoke about the play-off final.”

Forest had clinched promotion to the top flight powered by his incredible 29 league goals.
While things would turn sour the following season he has never forgotten that 1997-98 campaign, the last time Forest fans had anything to really shout about.

“It was an incredible race to get over the line then with ourselves, Middlesbrough and Sunderland all pushing each other. We clinched the second promotion spot but it was a real tough run.”
The following season was their last in the Premier League. They have not been near a return, not even a play-off final, until now.
Van Hooijdonk, 52, said: “It is unbelievable for a club of that size and history. I remember growing up watching their two European Cup final wins.
“I still remember the song We’ve Got The Whole World In Our Hands with the players names put in the lyrics.

Which is probably why there is this outpouring of emotion in Nottingham now as they are finally on the verge of being back among the big boys.

Van Hooijdonk, now a successful TV pundit in Holland, said: “I was watching it. Incredible! I love these end-of-season games.
“I still felt part of it because it was Forest. I just hope they can get the job done now.
“I watched Huddersfield’s semi- final first leg against Luton and did not think they looked as good as Forest.

Talking so positively about Forest it is easy to forget Van Hooijdonk famously went on strike for the first three months of the season after they were promoted.
He wants people to understand why. He had arrived at the end of the 1996-97 season but could not stop them from going down.
The following season he stayed to get them up. But he did not enjoy the coaching under then-manager Dave Bassett and believes the club also reneged on an agreement to let him go after the promotion.
Van Hooijdonk said: “I realised in the December of that promotion season that I was not going to improve as a player.
“I always wanted to push myself and while the games were great there was nothing happening in training in between.
“Some of the players might have liked that and been used to it but I wasn’t.
“There was an offer for me from PSV Eindhoven in the December but the club asked me to stay to help them go up and then they would let me go.

“I kept to my side of the bargain but when Newcastle came in for me that summer with a £7million offer they asked for £10m and the chance was gone.
“Meanwhile our captain Colin Cooper was sold to Middlesbrough and Kevin Campbell was sold to Trabzonspor.”
Van Hooijdonk did eventually come back but the team was in a mess and heading out of the league.
He added: “When I came back I met with all the players, explained myself and said if anyone had an issue to speak up.
“Only Geoff Thomas said he did not agree with what I had done and we had a discussion.
“They all knew the sort of person I was. If I had been an ass I would never have stayed and helped the club get promotion.
“For some fans, of course, the relationship did not recover but I want them to understand and know I still remember that promotion season so fondly and I will be cheering them on this Sunday.
“They play good football and if they go up I believe they have the right structure in the way they play, similar to Brentford, to stay up. I hope it all happens.”
