QPR 4 Man Utd 2: Solskjaer’s men humiliated by Championship side after Lingard grabbed early lead in pre-season friendly

MANCHESTER UNITED had a funny way of celebrating their manager’s new contract as they were spanked 4-2 by the super Hoops.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could only look on in disbelief as three goals in eight minutes at the start of the second half put the hosts on the road to a resounding victory.

The home fans sang ‘Can we play you every week?’.
And United supporters will have to be grateful that not many of these players will be turning out regularly for their side when the season begins.
Some of their defending was abysmal, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka showing why Solskjaer is so interested in Kieran Trippier.
And after scoring early, they failed to do enough going forward against an attractive, skilful QPR side.
United started fast and deserved their early goal. Livewire Mason Greenwood played a fine pass that Facundo Pellistri touched into the path of Lingard, who finished confidently.
But the hosts soon equalised and not for the last time, it was left wing back Lee Wallace who did the damage.
Wallace’s cross was excellent and Teden Mengi, United’s teenage centre-back, lost Charlie Austin, who headed past Tom Heaton.
Rangers edged the remainder of the half as Greenwood in particular lost momentum.
Half-time substitute Anthony Elanga had a great chance to put United in front, but a heavy touch after Greenwood’s through ball allowed QPR replacement goalkeeper Joe Walsh to clear.
Then came the triple whammy. First Wan-Bissaka reacted slowly to a deflected cross, allowing Wallace to pull the ball back for Dykes to score with a deflected shot.
Then the Reds’ defence parted for right wing-back Moses Odubajo, who cut inside before curling a fantastic shot past Lee Grant.

And after Walsh saved from Elanga again, United substitute ‘keeper Grant was picking the ball out of the net for the third time.
Brandon Williams showed Dykes inside, and the Scotland international struck a fine finish.
Elanga made up a bit for his earlier misses with a good finish to make it 4-2, but it was too much to ask the youngsters that Solskjaer had thrown on to mount a full comeback.

He played for 15 different clubs throughout a career that spanned 20 years.
Martinez was playing for Uruguayan Segunda Division team Villa Teresa at the time of his passing on Saturday.
Matches in Uruguay were suspended after the news of Martinez’s passing was announced.
And the Uruguayan FA posted a message of support on their social media account.
Villa Teresa tweeted: “Club Atlético Villa Teresa deeply regrets the passing of our main squad player Williams Martinez, his family, friends and relatives our deepest condolences.”
West Brom wrote: “We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Williams Martínez. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. Rest in peace.”
Ex-Premier League and Baggies star Jonathan Greening responded to West Brom’s tweet in a state of shock, writing: “No f****** way.”
Martinez won one cap for his country back in 2003.
And his compatriot Luis Suarez joined in the tributes on social media.
Atletico Madrid’s former LIverpool and Barcelona forward wrote: “What sad news the loss of Williams Martínez. Much strength for your friends and family. RIP Williams.”
Martinez began his career with Defensor Sporting, who he later captained, before joining West Brom and then French side Valenciennes.
Following a loan spell with Reims, he returned to Defensor, before heading off to play in Argentina with Chacarita Juniors and in Chile with Huachipato and Palestino.

He then moved to Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno before returning to Uruguay with River Plate Monitevideo.
Since 2015, he has played with Cerro, Deportivo Tachira and Ceuta, as well as further spells at River Plate and Rampla.
He joined Villa Teresa less than a year ago but has recently been out of action due to injury.

Watch Tahith Chong score controversial goal for Man Utd vs Derby as fuming Rams keeper’s handball appeals waved away

TAHITH CHONG put Manchester United 1-0 up in their pre-season friendly at Derby but Rams keeper Kelle Roos was convinced it was handball. The midfielder broke into the box down the right before dinking it over the stopper and sweeping home in controversial fashion.

The ball appeared to hit the midfielder on the arm in the build upCredit: Getty
It appeared to hit his arm – in footage shared by United – before falling back into his path but the referee was having none of it.
The camera angle makes it hard to tell whether it was a clear cut handball but pictures from alternate angles seems to suggest it was.
Chong, 21, swept the ball home from close range after 18 minutes.
But Derby’s players immediately turned to the ref and appealed for it to be ruled out.
Chong ignored the appeals and celebrated with his team-mates and the goal stood.
Opinion was split online about whether the goal should have been given.
GirlOnUtd wrote: “Chong gives United the lead after a determined run.
“A handball in the build-up but from the refs position it looked like it came off the chest.”

Paul added: “Thought that was handball there myself but good persistence from Chong.”
Mikey said: “Shades of me at 5-a-side with that handball from Chong.”
Things went from bad to worse for the Rams just a minute before the hour mark when Facundo Pellistri made it 2-0.
But despite their side going two-up, it was not all sweetness and light for United fans.
    STREAM ISSUES
Several were raging online as their MUTV streams crashed during the friendly against Wayne Rooney’s side.
Subscribers tuned in to the match to get a look at how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are shaping up for the new season.
One wrote on Twitter: “MUTV already down. Don’t know why I try with this football club.”
While another fumed: “You lot at #MUTV need to get a grip. What’s the point of paying to watch a game when you can’t watch the game?”
A third added: “MUTV not even working. Daylight robbery.”
Another asked: “@ManUtd are you gonna be refunding for my subscription to MUTV that has gone down during the game?”
A monthly pass for MUTV costs £7.99, while fans can currently buy an annual pass for £29.99.
Colin Kazim-Richards pulled one back for the home side on 70 minutes to make it 2-1.

The duo were left behind while the rest of the squad was cleared to return to the UK.
Players will self-isolate for ten days to check if they are also positive.
The exiled pair face an anxious wait before they are allowed to travel.
And the normal fitness programme has been replaced by home exercise.
United have friendlies against Doncaster and Norwich before the August 7 kick-off.
The news comes just days before Monday’s ‘Freedom Day’, which will see pandemic restrictions lifted.
Meanwhile, Boris Johnson’s plan to lift virtually all of England’s pandemic restrictions has been slammed as a risk to the world by 1200 scientists.
Michael Baker – a professor of public health at the University of Otago and a member of the New Zealand ministry of health’s Covid-19 technical advisory group – is disappointed with the UK’s lack of leadership in the public health crisis.

How Man Utd could line up vs Derby with Lingard to start against Wayne Rooney’s side despite West Ham transfer interest

MANCHESTER UNITED play their first pre-season game of the summer on Sunday as they take on Wayne Rooney’s Derby at Pride Park. And Jesse Lingard could be handed a start despite West Ham being keen to bring him back to the London Stadium.
How Man Utd could line up against Derby on Sunday
United legend Rooney will welcome his old team to the Midlands for a 1pm kick-off.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to pick a blend of youth and experience with several members of his squad yet to return from the summer’s international tournaments.
Lingard and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were both overlooked by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2020 – with the former unlucky to miss out after being included in the Three Lions’ initial 33-man provisional group.
The 28-year-old is back at his boyhood club after a brilliant loan spell with the Hammers – in the second half of last season – that reignited his career.
He scored nine goals in 16 appearances for the East London side and was the Premier League Player of the Month for April.
West Ham still want to sign the star permanently but have so far been unable to agree a fee with the Red Devils.
Wan-Bissaka is a victim of England being blessed with four top-class right-backs in Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
But their absence did not hold the Three Lions back as Southgate’s men made the whole nation proud and reached England’s first major tournament final in 55 years.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

With focus now back to club action, Wan-Bissaka will start at right-back against the Rams with Lingard likely to slot into the attacking midfield three behind fellow England absentee Mason Greenwood.
With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof yet to return from the Euros, Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi – who was loaned to Derby last season – are likely to start at centre-back in front of Tom Heaton.
The keeper, 35, arrived from Aston Villa on a free transfer earlier this month – 11 years after he left.
Alex Telles will play at left-back with Luke Shaw another late returner after his Three Lions heroics – including his stunning goal in the final.
James Garner has returned from an impressive spell on loan at Nottingham Forest and could play at the base of the midfield alongside Nemanja Matic.
Solskjaer is likely to opt for a 4-2-3-1 system that he used regularly last season.
And that will see Juan Mata and Shola Shoretire complete the starting XI alongside Lingard.
    YOUNGSTERS READY TO SHINE
Youngsters Will Fish, Di’Shon Bernard, Ethan Galbraith and Joe Hugill have spent time with the senior group this week and could get some minutes.
Matej Kovar, Dylan Levitt, Anthony Elanga and Hannibal are also in with a shout.
While Andreas Pereira and Facundo Pellistri are also back from loans and will be pushing for minutes with their futures uncertain.
At Derby, Rooney has been letting former Red Devil Ravel Morrison train with his side in a bid to revive his career.
Morrison, 28, played at United when Rooney was in his prime but is currently without a club.
The talented star is staying fit with the Rams and hoping to catch the eye as he plots his next move after years of moving clubs.
Morrison was due to head to Mexico to sign for a top team after leaving Dutch side ADO Den Haag in January.

West Brom reject West Ham’s Sam Johnstone transfer bid with Tottenham also interested in £10m-plus England keeper

WEST HAM have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Sam Johnstone with West Brom dismissing their bid for the player. The Athletic claims the Irons’ offer – reportedly made this week – is significantly less than the £10million-plus fee the Hawthorns side are after.
West Brom have rejected West Ham’s bid for Sam JohnstoneCredit: Getty
David Moyes’ side, who finished sixth in the Premier League last term, are on the hunt for a possible successor to Lukasz Fabianski.
The Poland international, 36, is entering the final year of his contract with the Hammers following an extension in March this year.
The veteran stopper has kept 25 clean sheets in 101 West Ham appearances across all competitions following his July 2018 move from Swansea.
The Athletic claims Johnstone’s shot-stopping for West Brom has caught the attention of suitors despite the club being relegated to the Championship last season.
The player, who was part of England’s Euro 2020 squad, kept six clean sheets in 37 top-flight games for the club last term.
And although West Brom are expecting Johnstone to depart this summer, they want to do everything to receive the full asking price for his services.
However, reports suggest the Hammers are unlikely to want to increase their offer with the Preston-born stopper already in the final year of his contract.
It is believed the Irons could return for Johnstone when his contract expires in 2022.
However, the player is reportedly an Arsenal target with the Gunners searching for potential replacements for Bernd Leno should he leave the Emirates.
And Prem rivals Tottenham are also eyeing the player as a possible successor to Hugo Lloris next summer.

    ALTERNATIVE OPTION
West Ham are thought to have other goalkeeper options in mind with Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola on their target list.
And the Irons are reportedly in talks with the Ligue 1 giants over a potential loan move for Areola, 28, with an option to buy.
The Paris-born stopper is likely to see first-team opportunities limited with PSG completing the signing of AC Milan and Italy ace Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Azzurri goalkeeper earned praise for his European Championship-winning performance for Roberto Mancini’s side.

The player who signed a five-year deal with the Parc des Prince club, made a vital double-save to help Italy defeat England in the final of the 2020 Euros.
And it is thought Areola, who spent last term on loan at Fulham, is unlikely to want to play back-up to the Italy star.
The Ligue One player kept 10 clean sheets in 37 appearances across all competitions for the Cottagers last season.
