      Arsenal send Charlie Patino, 18, to Blackpool on season-long loan transfer to give midfielder first-team experience

      ARSENAL starlet Charlie Patino has completed his season-long loan switch to Championship side Blackpool.The 18-year-old, who has been likened to Phil Foden, has signed for the Seasiders in his quest to play regular first-team football.

      But the deal does not include a buy-option – with the Gunners believing the midfielder has a huge future in North London.
      Patino featured twice under Mikel Arteta last term with the teenager scoring on his debut against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup just before Christmas.
      He then started in the 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup, but he struggled against Steve Cooper’s side.
      And he has now decided to link up with Blackpool, where he could feature against Stoke on Saturday.

      Speaking to Blackpool’s website: “This is a great opportunity for me, and I think I’m ready to take this on. It’s the next step of my career and I’m really excited to get going.
      “I spoke to Danny Ballard and Dujon Sterling before coming to the Club and they were full of praise and said it’s an amazing place to be where everybody is welcome.
      “They also mentioned the fans, the Tangerine Army, who are always on their feet at home and away games.
      “I’m just buzzing to play in front of them and show them what I’m about.”

      Boss Michael Appleton added: “Charlie is a very talented boy and I’m delighted that Arsenal have trusted us to look after him and further his development.
      “The club has a good relationship with Arsenal from previous loan deals, as I have personally from taking players to my former clubs, with Brooke Norton-Cuffy being the most recent last season.
      “Charlie is one of the best midfielders in his age group and I can’t wait to start working with him.”
      Patino has followed academy team-mate Folarin Balogin out the Arsenal door, with the exciting striker linking up with French side Reims on loan.

      The 39-year-old is now set to lead Olympiacos out against Slovan Bratislava in a Europa League qualifier on Thursday.
      Corberan shocked The Terriers with his resignation just weeks before the new season began.
      The Spanish coach led the club to the Championship play-off final last season, where they ultimately lost to Nottingham Forest and were thus denied promotion back to the Premier League.
      In a statement on the club’s website, head of football operations Leigh Bromby said: “It is with sadness that we have accepted Carlos’ resignation.

      “He was obviously a big part of what was a fantastic season in 2021/22, but he has subsequently come to us over the last 24 hours and made it clear that he doesn’t think he is the man to take us forward.
      “The timing is disappointing, with our preparations for the new season already under way.
      “However, we have worked very hard here over the last few years to build a coaching and support structure around the first team that gives us continuity and stability when there’s change.
      “We’ve also created succession plans for every eventuality.”

      FOREST GREEN ROVERS are pushing to sign Connor Wickham on a free transfer, according to reports.The newly-promoted League One side have already signed seven new players this summer, including former Huddersfield midfielder Reece Brown.

      But, manager Ian Burchnall is now looking to add more experience to the squad as a sign of intent.
      And he is hoping to do so with a huge statement signing.
      According to Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath, Forest Green have identified Wickham as a top transfer target.
      Club chiefs have reportedly been in talks with the 29-year-old’s representatives to discuss the possibility of a deal.

      Wickham became a free agent when he was released by MK Dons at the end of last season.
      If he were to join Forest Green before the transfer window closes, it would mark the eighth move of his career.
      The striker signed his first professional contract with Ipswich Town in 2009 before joining Sunderland two years later.
      He was then loaned out for two consecutive seasons to Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds respectively.

      His impressive form at such a young age has caught the attention of Man Utd, claim The United Stand.
      If United do sign him then they are reportedly willing to loan him back to Bristol City so he can continue to gain first-team experience.

      Scott signed a new deal at the club last year keeping him at Ashton Gate until 2025 so they may be reluctant to sell.

      And that could leave the door open for Wolves to snap him up before the transfer window closes.
      Diaz netted 22 times for the second tier side last season, with only Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dominic Solanke managing more goals in the division.
      Blackburn triggered his one-year contract extension to keep him at the club for the 2022/23 campaign.
      But his deal will still expire next summer, so Rovers may well opt to cash in on him now.

      Burnley were starting to dominate — picking up all the second ball and bossing possession.
      Dara Costelloe played in Barnes with a slide-rule pass and his effort was well saved by Nicholls.

      Huddersfield were not laying a glove on the visitors and groans rang out when Josh Ruffles overhit a cross from the left.
      Costelloe should have doubled the lead when Maatsen set him up with a peach of a pass from the right — but scuffed his effort when unmarked from just eight yards.
      After the break Josh Korma frustratingly lost control of the ball and allowed it to run out of play when well positioned on the left edge of the Burnley box.
      KOMPANY’S HEART RACING
      Huddersfield had certainly improved but found the Burnley defence rock solid when it needed to.
      Ollie Turton managed to produce a quality cross that Danny Ward was set to pounce on — but it was headed clear before it reached him.
      With the score still 1-0, Burnley could never be completely comfortable.
      And when Sorba Thomas swung in a dangerous free-kick from the right, Kompany’s heart must have been racing when Barnes held on to Lees’ arm.
      But referee James Linington was not interested. 
      Scott Twine came on for his Burnley debut with 15 minutes left after making his move from MK Dons.
      The Clarets were denied a second when Taylor Harwood-Bellis saw a bullet effort held on the line by Nicholls.
      And Twine then saw a ferocious free-kick thump back off a post. More

      This season looks more open than ever.
      And while I keep hearing that my Birmingham team are going to win about three matches all season and get relegated, that is definitely not how we see it internally.
      On Saturday afternoon we kick off our campaign at Luton, where I’m sure I will get a lovely, warm reception!
      But Luton are a prime example of how a team can take everyone by surprise in the Championship.
      Nathan Jones’ side stormed into the play-offs last season despite having one of the smallest budgets in the league.
      They are proof of what can be achieved.
      Our new boss, John Eustace, was my captain at Watford a few years ago and I believe he is going to be an excellent manager.
      And I’m going into this campaign feeling positive both personally and collectively.
      Another thing I prefer about the Championship is that we don’t have VAR. I hate it. It’s s***.
      It was supposed to stop arguments and give us justice but it’s done nothing of the sort.
      At least in the Championship you can celebrate a goal without fearing a killjoy in Stockley Park might rule it out because of a toenail offside decision.
      I also think that referees in the Championship let the game flow more, they allow a bit more physicality and, unlike some refs in the Premier League, they are not looking out for their two minutes of fame on Match of the Day.
      As a result the relationship between players and match officials is more relaxed.

      Matches in the Championship do tend to be more honest and physical, which I also appreciate.
      Having said how unpredictable the Championship is, I’d make Norwich favourites for the title.
      They have won the league on the last two occasions they’ve played at this level, they’ve had minimal disruption to their playing staff and they have a management team of Dean Smith and Craig Shakespeare who know their way back into the Premier League.
      Burnley did plenty of early business and it will be interesting to see how they fare under Vinny Kompany — and it really does make me feel old when players I used to play against turn up in management!
      My old club Watford are difficult to evaluate.
      It feels like they are yet to make the signing that makes you sit up and say ‘wow’ and they may still sell Ismaila Sarr and Emmanuel Dennis.
      But they will still have a squad depth which should see them competing for promotion.
      Stoke are my dark horses to go up.
      They impressed me last term and have signed guaranteed goals by recruiting Dwight Gayle from Newcastle, as well as a top Championship centre-half in Aden Flint from Cardiff.
      Then there are some impressive youngsters, including D’Margio Wright-Phillips — the grandson of Ian Wright, which makes me feel even older…
      West Brom should be up there, too. They’ve signed the excellent Jon Swift from Reading and Jed Wallace from Millwall.
      The Baggies were disappointing last year and you expect more from them this season.
      Middlesbrough, under Chris Wilder, finished last season well and I’d expect them to be in the play-off places.
