      But Forest scored more AND conceded fewer goals across the whole season.
      Huddersfield scraped past Luton 2-1 on aggregate in the play-offs semi-final, while Nottingham Forest needed penalties to finally overcome Sheffield United.
      The Terriers played in the Premier League as recently as the 2019-20 season and have featured in SIX play-off finals – most recently in the 2016-17 season when they snuck past Reading on penalties to reach the top-flight for the first time in their history.
      But for Forest, this will feel like unchartered territory.
      The Midlands giants – who won the European Cup as recently as 1980 – have NEVER played in a play-off final.
      They haven’t been in the Premier League this millennium, either – last enduring a horror, one-season spell in the top-flight in 1998-99.
      Forest have even sunk has low as League One – playing in the third tier between 2005 and 2008.
      Since then, they’ve been languishing in the Championship for 14 years.
      Incredibly, Nottingham Forest haven’t played at Wembley since their 1992 League Cup final defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

      But while Huddersfield have racked up the points in the Championship, Forest enjoyed a better domestic cup season.
      In fact, Nottingham Forest KO’d the Terriers in the fifth round of their impressive FA Cup run, in which they beat Arsenal AND Leicester, before losing to eventual champions Liverpool in the quarter-finals.
      But how will they cope with the pressure?
      With at least £170m up for grabs, as well as that all-important Premier League place, it really is anyone’s game.
      Neither team will underestimate the importance of the match – not just for the squad or the manager’s sake, but for the that of the future of the club as a whole.

      But 19 years later his boy also netted twice against the Blades — only this time they prevailed after winning a thrilling tie on penalties — and today only Huddersfield stand in their way of returning to the top flight after 23 years.
      And Johnson snr told SunSport: “Wembley is the mecca of world football and I’m going to be so nervous watching Brennan playing there in front of almost 90,000.

      Johnson Sr believes Forest will prevail against a Huddersfield team who will try to spoil their opponents’ attacking football.

      I remember those days in the top division and used to wear a No 22 Forest shirt with Bryan Roy’s name on the back, hoping to one day break into the team myself.
      It’s unbelievable to think the club are one win away from returning to the big time.
      Only a year ago I was in that dressing room with most of these lads.
      And to see where they’ve got to and the job manager Steve Cooper has done, is nothing short of sensational.
      When you think they were bottom of the Championship when he walked in and now it all comes down to a play-off final against a Huddersfield side who have also done brilliantly too.
      As a player who came through the youth ranks to break into the first team, it’s wonderful to see that academy graduates have played a huge part in this turnaround.

      Asked if he thought then the team were realistically going to mount a promotion challenge, Rhodes said: “No one set going up as a target but it was something that became more probable.
      “We’ve ended third in the league and are now in the play-off final.”

      Rhodes, 32, was already a Terriers legend for his previous exploits. They included scoring an eight-minute hat-trick of headers against Exeter in 2010 — beating Dixie Dean’s record at Everton from the 1930s.
      He became the first Huddersfield player to net back-to-back hat-tricks since the 1920s in 2011. The striker was top scorer three seasons in a row and won League One player of the season in 2012.

      “It’ll be fantastic for the whole club and town to get that win on Sunday.”
      Rhodes suffered a fractured back after two league games and sat out four months.
      And he admitted: “I overdid it in the summer — trained hard to come back in the best physical shape but I had this niggling injury in pre-season and couldn’t shake it off.
      “I had it scanned, got the bad news and had a few months doing nothing because there’s not much you can do with a fractured back.
      “But the body is now feeling better — nice and fresh — because I had that good rest.”
      Rhodes has played a supporting role since returning —  making 17 substitute appearances in the league and six starts.
      But he is in form with three goals in his last five games.
      He said: “I always strive to do my best — whether that be helping people out day to day, encouraging them, being enthusiastic.
      “If there’s a role to start then great but if it’s coming off the bench to impact the game, whether it be to see out a match, score or create a chance, I’m happy to do that, too.

      “Everything I do is geared to hopefully getting Huddersfield promotion.”
      Rhodes has certainly made an impact. In the 793 Championship minutes he has played, the team have scored 17 goals and conceded only six — and in all the time he has spent on the pitch since January the team have let in just one.
      He laughed: “That makes me sound like a good defensive striker. But the one thing I’ve got better at and developed is being a nuisance  — throwing myself around and being annoying for the defenders.
      “As I’ve gotten older, every ball matters when it’s up there. Even when it’s not in my favour, I can tip it our way.
      “If I can’t win the ball, hopefully it drops to someone else in the team.”
      Huddersfield also have players with Wembley experience.
      Rhodes, himself, played in the League One final against Sheffield United when Huddersfield won promotion ten years ago — and admits it will help ahead of this weekend’s clash.

      Boss Carlos Corberan has done a fantastic job this season after a difficult first year.
      Rhodes admitted: “He doesn’t get close to us on a human level but definitely does on a professional one.
      “There are meetings every day before and after training. We have one-to-one time, too.
      “It’s always made clear exactly what the manager wants. There’s never a day we don’t interact with him.”
      But how does he cope as an older player with Corberan’s gruelling training sessions?

      The Terriers ace said: “It helps us older ones more because we’re keeping our bodies moving and high speeds up.
      “Every individual has his own target to hit. I’ve never had that scenario but it keeps me in the best physical shape I’ve ever been.”
      After beating Luton in the semi-finals, Huddersfield flew to Portugal for warm-weather training in the Algarve — and the players took their families.
      Rhodes said: “It was fantastic to see the lads with their wives, girlfriends and families and seeing the dynamics of that, such as each other’s children playing together. 
      “I don’t think too many people spoke about the play-off final.”

      Van Hooijdonk, 52, said: “It is unbelievable for a club of that size and history. I remember growing up watching their two European Cup final wins.

      Glory days for this club seem, and are, a very long time ago.
      Which is probably why there is this outpouring of emotion in Nottingham now as they are finally on the verge of being back among the big boys.
      They are in tomorrow’s play-off final against Huddersfield courtesy of a tense semi-final second leg penalty shootout win over Sheffield United.
      Van Hooijdonk, now a successful TV pundit in Holland, said: “I was watching it. Incredible! I love these end-of-season games.
      “I still felt part of it because it was Forest. I just hope they can get the job done now.
      “I watched Huddersfield’s semi- final first leg against Luton and did not think they looked as good as Forest.
      “This is a very exciting team Steve Cooper has and up front Brennan Johnson is fantastic.

      Talking so positively about Forest it is easy to forget Van Hooijdonk famously went on strike for the first three months of the season after they were promoted.
      He wants people to understand why. He had arrived at the end of the 1996-97 season but could not stop them from going down.
      The following season he stayed to get them up. But he did not enjoy the coaching under then-manager Dave Bassett and believes the club also reneged on an agreement to let him go after the promotion.
      Van Hooijdonk said: “I realised in the December of that promotion season that I was not going to improve as a player.
      “I always wanted to push myself and while the games were great there was nothing happening in training in between.
      “Some of the players might have liked that and been used to it but I wasn’t.
      “There was an offer for me from PSV Eindhoven in the December but the club asked me to stay to help them go up and then they would let me go.

      “I kept to my side of the bargain but when Newcastle came in for me that summer with a £7million offer they asked for £10m and the chance was gone.
      “Meanwhile our captain Colin Cooper was sold to Middlesbrough and Kevin Campbell was sold to Trabzonspor.”
      Van Hooijdonk did eventually come back but the team was in a mess and heading out of the league.
      He added: “When I came back I met with all the players, explained myself and said if anyone had an issue to speak up.
      “Only Geoff Thomas said he did not agree with what I had done and we had a discussion.
      “They all knew the sort of person I was. If I had been an ass I would never have stayed and helped the club get promotion.
      “For some fans, of course, the relationship did not recover but I want them to understand and know I still remember that promotion season so fondly and I will be cheering them on this Sunday.
      “They play good football and if they go up I believe they have the right structure in the way they play, similar to Brentford, to stay up. I hope it all happens.”

      SunSport understands that former Blues gaffer Frank Lampard is keen to snap up the youngster to bring him to Everton.

      “I worked for a year at a sports shop in Oxford Circus selling footy boots and then moved into the scaffolding trade with regular 6am starts in freezing conditions. I didn’t enjoy it at all and it doubled my determination to make it as a footballer but I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s all part of my journey.
