Birmingham ‘draw up 20-man list’ for Wayne Rooney replacement with Frank Lampard tipped for stunning move

TWENTY candidates are reportedly in the running to be Birmingham’s new manager following the sacking of Wayne Rooney. The Blues axed the Manchester United legend after he won just two matches in 15 games.

Rooney surprisingly took over from John Eustace despite the club making a good start to the season and were as high as sixth in the table when he was dismissed in October.
Birmingham have since slid down to 20th in the Championship under Rooney’s watch.
The club are now on the lookout for a new boss with technical director Craig Gardner and chief executive Garry Cook leading the search.
Ex-Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray is set for talks later this week, claim the Daily Mail.

Reports also suggest that Frank Lampard is in the running.
He has a large enough profile to appeal to US owners Knighthead but it is unclear whether the Chelsea legend would want the job.
A return for Eustace has been considered and players are supposedly open to his comeback.
However, such an appointment could undermine NFL legend Tom Brady and the rest of the club’s owners.

Gary Rowett and Nathan Jones are also on the 20-man list.
Rowett managed Birmingham from 2014 to 2016 and is popular with supporters.
Meanwhile, Jones impressed when in charge of Luton while they were in the Championship but failed to do similar when with Southampton in the Premier League.
Previous speculation has linked ex-Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, England Under-21s gaffer Lee Carsley and recently sacked Nottingham Forest chief Steve Cooper with the Birmingham job.
It’s claimed many more options are being considered at this stage.

The forward has only started one game – which came in the League Cup – this term with Dominic Solanke the undisputed first-choice centre-forward at the Vitality.
It is now expected Moore will leave Bournemouth in January, though his wages of around £40,000 a week mean a loan to the second-tier is more likely.
Cardiff – who sold Moore to Bournemouth in 2022 – are believed to be pushing hardest for his signature.
While there is tentative interest from Middlesbrough, whose priority position to strengthen is at the back.

The likes of Leeds, Ipswich, West Brom, Birmingham and Sunderland are all keen on bringing a new forward in the winter window so will likely be aware of Moore’s situation.
Though Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys – another of Moore’s former sides – are pursuing Jay Stansfield, whose loan to St Andrew’s could be cut short this month.
Moore, who has 39 caps and 12 caps for Wales, has played up the divisions all the way from non-league for the likes of Forest Green, Barnsley, Wigan and Torquay.
Since arriving on the south coast he has managed to find the net nine times in his 43 appearances.

The Chile international hit 47 goals in 177 games for Rovers during his stay in Lancashire – including 22 Championship goals in the 2021-22 season.
He moved in the summer to Villarreal on a four year deal after his contract at Blackburn expired but has struggled to settle.
The forward has started just two LaLiga games so far this season and made 12 appearances from the bench.
He is yet to score or assist for the club, however.

And now Chris Wilder is set to offer the 24-year-old a lifeline by bringing him to Sheffield United.
The club are set to offer Brereton-Diaz the chance to experience England’s top flight with a six month loan deal.
The Blades are desperate for goals in their bid for survival.
Oli McBurnie and Cameron Archer are the side’s joint top scorers with just three goals each.

The Blades are also interested in bringing in some Premier League experience into their goalkeeping department – with Kasper Schmeichel of interest.

Leicester on track to shatter Championship points record as Enzo Maresca’s side now TEN points clear at top of table

LEICESTER are on course to obliterate the Championship points record as they continue a breathtaking season in the second tier. The Foxes suffered bitter disappointment on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated from the Premier League after nine years in the top flight.

But they are set to bounce back immediately as they sit 10 points clear of second-place Ipswich after 26 games.
Enzo Maresca’s men have already accumulated 65 points thanks to 21 wins, two draws and just three defeats.
This means they are projected to finish on 115 points come the end of the season.
That would destroy the previous highest total achieved by a Championship side – which was recorded by Reading at the end of the 2005/06 campaign when they racked up 106 points under Steve Coppell.

The Royals broke the record by just one point, pipping Sunderland’s tally of 105 from 1998/99.
Only four other Championship sides have reached 100 points.
Newcastle finished on 102 at the end of the 2009/10 season, while Leicester’s last promotion in 2014 also saw them go up with 102.
Fulham finished 2000/01 with 101 points, while the most recent centurions were Burnley when they managed the same total last season.

Leicester are on course to register a record points tally in the Championship
The rest of the top 10 is rounded off by three 99-point teams in Manchester City’s 2001/02 side under Kevin Keegan, Chelsea’s 1988/89 team, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves outfit from 2017/18.
And while Leicester are on track to break the record by a huge nine points, they could yet set an even higher bar.
Maresca, a former assistant of Pep Guardiola’s at Man City, has led his side to a run of seven wins and one draw from their last eight matches.
Their only dropped points in that time came away at fellow promotion-chasing Ipswich.
And with their form only improving, Leicester could yet exceed their projected total of 115 points.
The maximum they could finish with is 125 points if they were to win all of their remaining 20 matches. More

Inside Wayne Rooney’s disastrous 84-day Birmingham spell, with players RELIEVED at sacking after soft approach

WAYNE ROONEY went for a softly-softly approach as a manager. That was quite a surprise when you consider that — on more than one  occasion at Manchester United — he got Sir Alex Ferguson’s hairdryer treatment.

During his disastrous 15-game spell in charge of Birmingham, which brought just two wins, Rooney opted for a totally different tack  to his former boss — and  ended up as an unmitigated disaster.
The last time Roo spoke to his Blues team was in the dressing room after their 3-0 defeat at Leeds on Monday.
And the former England captain — clearly frustrated after the ninth defeat of his reign — told the squad he was only going to say a few words as he wanted to avoid losing his temper.
Rooney, 38, did not want to say  anything he would regret.
    READ MROE TOP STORIES
The fire which took him to the very top as a striker appeared to be missing from his time as a coach. Certainly in this spell at Birmingham.
Instead, Rooney did his best to remain calm and measured, maybe too much so.
Though he talked in his leaving  statement about focusing on his next management job after some time away with the family, you do wonder if the one-time Three Lions and Red Devils’ star has blown his chance of ever becoming a top-level boss.
He is a big-thinker about the game but, like team-mates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard from England’s so-called Golden Generation,  Rooney has failed to cut it in management.

After the Leeds defeat, he did not travel on the team bus, instead returning home to the North West.
Rooney rarely travelled with the team to away games — not even staying in their hotel the night before.
Instead, he arrived in the morning.
While this is not totally unusual for some managers, you would have thought Rooney, having only joined the club in October after leaving DC United, would have wanted to spend as much time with his lads as possible.
He was an unpopular choice to replace John Eustace, who was loved by players and staff only to be sacked with the Blues in sixth place.
While players still had respect for coaches Ashley Cole and John O’Shea — who both took training yesterday — it soon evaporated as the defeats continued.
But the biggest disappointment was that Rooney failed to really stamp his authority on the team.
When announcing Rooney’s appointment, Brum chief executive Garry Cook said: “When the opportunity presents itself to appoint a manager who shares your ambition and is both a student and a great of the game, then you act.
“This is what we have done.
“We are confident his appointment, supported by his hand-picked coaching staff, will culminate in a young, attack-minded team that will excite our fans.”
Ultimately, the front-foot football which had been promised never materialised.
Coach Carl Robinson departed with Rooney, but ex-Prem stars Ashley Cole and John O’Shea have since taken Birmingham trainingCredit: PA
Rooney did try to get the team playing out from the back.
But considering the quality of the  players at his disposal, this change in philosophy seemed risky.
The poor results on the pitch proved the change in style was a mistake.
Previous manager Eustace knew the squad’s strengths and weaknesses.
At training, Rooney rarely focused on team shape or specific patterns of playing.
As the team continued to struggle in the Championship, it was felt in some quarters that standards were slipping.
Nobody was getting fined for small misdemeanours, such as turning up late for training. Clearly, Rooney did not relish confrontation.
For the last three games, he left experienced striker Scott Hogan out of the squad but did not explain that decision.
And after another lousy performance in Yorkshire, there was no major surprise at the club when Rooney’s sacking was announced yesterday.
When the squad arrived at the training ground, there was no sign of him.
The Blues sacked boss John Eustace in October when they were sixthCredit: PA
But while the news broke on social media, the squad were only told of the sacking at a 10.45am team meeting with technical director Craig Gardner.
Coaches Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth — who worked with Rooney at MLS side DC United — both packed their bags and left.
Former England left-back Cole and ex-Old Trafford defender O’Shea took training along with Under-21s manager Steve Spooner, while the players have been given today off.
Now, Birmingham are looking for yet another manager.
Eustace was sacked with the club in the play-off spots and he must have regretted turning down Swansea twice in the summer.
Although he is open to a return to St Andrew’s, this seems unlikely.
Rooney was seen as a manager rather than a coach and all eyes will be on where he ends up next.
As for Blues, time is not on their side. They visit Hull in the FA Cup on Saturday — which is pretty much a free hit.
But they will go into their home league game with Swansea in ten days’ time in 20th, just six points clear of the bottom three and defeat at St Andrew’s could drag them even further into trouble.

When Rooney was appointed to much fanfare just 83 days ago, Birmingham’s fans were hoping for a promotion charge.
Instead, they have ended up in a relegation fight. More

Blues CEO Garry Cook dusted himself down on Tuesday and started the recruiting process – again – 13 weeks after he pinned his hopes on Rooney.
A call to Welshman Cooper heads his “To do list,” after the Roo Revolution bombed spectacularly, with Ralph Hasenhuttl, Reims head coach Will Still, Jesse Marsch, Paul Heckingbottom and England Under-21 head coach Lee Carsley also being considered.
Former Manchester United and England icon Rooney was axed shortly after his side crashed 3-0 to Leeds United on New Year’s Day.
A club statement confirmed: “Birmingham City has today parted company with Manager, Wayne Rooney, and First Team Coach, Carl Robinson.

“We are committed to doing what is necessary to bring success to St. Andrew’s.”
Rooney, 38, was only appointed at St. Andrew’s in mid-October, on a three-and-a-half-year deal, with Birmingham sitting sixth in the play-off places.
He was tasked with implementing: “No fear football,” and a possession-based style of play.
However, he won just two of 15 matches in charge and left with Birmingham languishing 20th in the Championship, just six points off the drop zone after 26 matches.
Rooney failed to win over a sceptical group of players, who were relieved to discover he had been axed when they arrived for training.
On Tuesday, Roo vowed to rebuild his shattered reputation and revealed he would take a break with his family before returning to management.
“Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be,” he confessed in a statement.
“However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.
