Atalanta star Marten de Roon promises pizza for 1,000 people if underdogs beat PSG and win Champions League

ATALANTA star Marten De Roon has promised “pizza for a thousand people” if his side win the Champions League this season.
The Italian underdogs face French moneybags Paris Saint-Germain in tonight’s quarter-final knockout clash.

But after Atalanta finished third in Serie A with 98 goals – the most in the league – many are fancying them for a shock win this evening.
That’s even despite the entire squad earning LESS than Neymar’s weekly wage of £620,000.
Atalanta are based in Bergamo, Lombardy – one of Italy’s worst-hit areas when coronavirus struck earlier this year.
And fans have not been able to watch Gian Piero Gasperini’s men upset the odds since.

Former Middlesbrough midfielder De Roon, 29, has now vowed to provide pizza for Atalanta supporters after their tough year – but only if the club beat PSG and go on to win the entire tournament.
The Netherlands international said: “If we win the Champions League there will be pizza for more than a thousand people.
“However, if we lose, we will try to reach that goal again next year.
“I can’t support us losing. We will try again next year and we will see how it goes.

“We can cause an upset, even if it will be difficult. We will give our best.”
Boss Gasperini echoed De Roon’s sentiments after PSG confirmed a positive coronavirus test at their training ground, adding: “We are proof that even a team with a European heritage can do well and achieve important goals through playing, enthusiasm and other things.
“We have a responsibility to ourselves not to disappoint. We want to continue to show that Atalanta can sit at the table of the biggest clubs.”

Neymar earns more than entire Atalanta squad with eye-watering £620k-a-week wages as PSG star prepares for clash

NEYMAR earns more than the entire squad of tonight’s opponents Atalanta put together.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward, 28, is on a staggering £620,000 per week following his world-record transfer from Barcelona in 2017.

    2

Neymar earns approximately £32.2m per year in wages, more than the entire Atalanta squad put togetherCredit: Reuters
That sees him earn around £32.2million in a year, according to L’Equipe.
And incredibly, the whole Atalanta team put together earn just shy of that figure, with La Gazzetta dello Sport recording a total earning of between £30m and £32m.
Neymar is by far PSG’s top earner with his mammoth £620k weekly wages.
Kylian Mbappe is next on around £280,000 per week – or £14.5m a year – with Thiago Silva, whose contract is up at the end of the season, on £190,000 per week, which equates to just shy of £10m across the year.

When Mauro Icardi’s wages are taken into consideration, PSG’s front three earn approximately £50m per year.
    DAVID VS GOLIATH
In comparison, Atalanta’s three top earners pocket a far-more-modest £4.5m per year between them.
Captain Alejandro Gomez, Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel are each on £1.5m across the calendar year, working out as around £29,000 per week.
So by Champions League quarter-final standards, it is a David and Goliath match up in Lisbon tonight.

Neymar’s PSG are the heavy favourites, especially with Kylian Mbappe potentially fit and available after an ankle injury.
Victory would see the French champions progress into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history.
But for debutants Atalanta, they will be hoping to cause an upset and reach the final four.

And they will certainly pose a threat in attack, even without Josip Ilicic available at the Estadio da Luz.
Midfielder Marco Verratti is expected to miss the game with a calf injury while Angel Di Maria is suspended.
PSG had worrying news when a player tested positive for coronavirus at the club’s training ground 24 hours before the match but it is not thought to have affected the first team who had already left for Portugal.

Andrea Pirlo chose Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo in his dream XI and used to pick Barcelona on the Playstation

ANDREA PIRLO once snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo in favour of Lionel Messi in a dream XI – and always picked Barcelona on the PlayStation.
The legendary Italian may have an awkward conversation in pre-season, though, after taking over as Juventus boss.

    3

Andrea Pirlo picked his dream XI in 2015 and there was no space for Cristiano Ronaldo, who he will now manage at JuventusCredit: Getty Images – Getty
Pirlo, 41, replaced Maurizio Sarri at the Allianz Stadium and his first job may be to make peace with superstar Ronaldo – especially after describing Messi as “the best”.
He played against both Messi and Ronaldo during his illustrious playing career but was certain when asked who the toughest he faced was, choosing the Barcelona skipper.
And then in an Instagram post sharing a picture with the Argentine in 2015, Pirlo wrote: “A great meeting with the best…”
He even admitted whenever playing video-game football with Alessandro Nesta during their days at AC Milan, he always chose the Nou Camp club.

Pirlo said: “After the wheel, the best invention is the PlayStation.
“Me against Nesta was a clasico of our time at Milanello. We’d get in early, have breakfast at 9 then close ourselves off in our room to challenge each other, train, have lunch and then it was back in our room again until 4 in the afternoon.
“Our battles were pure adrenaline. I chose Barcelona, Sandrino did too. Barca against Barca.”

But asked to fulfil his dream XI from players to have played in the Champions League, there was no spot in the side for Ronaldo.
Admittedly this was five years ago and since then the Portuguese hero has won another three European titles and broke numerous goalscoring records, now sitting proudly at the top of the all-time chart with 130 goals.
But with no Ronaldo, here is two-time winner Pirlo’s Champions League dream team from 2015…
    Gianluigi Buffon
Now his boss at Juventus, Pirlo played alongside and against one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time – his only blot is not winning the Champions League.
Pirlo said: “He has been at the top for so long. He makes saves that no other goalkeeper in the world can make. He knows how to command the defence and give confidence to them.”
    Cafu
The Brazilian full-back redefined the position with his threat going forward as well as in defence and led his country to World Cup glory in 2002.
Pirlo’s assesment: “Trend-setting in being one of the first truly great attacking full backs. Excellent at getting forward, but very strong defensively as well.”
    Paolo Maldini
Another AC Milan hero, another iconic figure in Italian – and world football – winning five European Cups and reaching a further three finals.
Pirlo commented: “A defender who could read the game like nobody else, so intelligent and always so calm on the ball. One of the true greats, for both Italy and Milan.”
    Fabio Cannavaro
Will forever be remembered for lifting the World Cup in 2006 and another of the Azzurri clan who just loved defending.
Pirlo said: “A true leader that didn’t need to ask for respect, but naturally got it. Without doubt one of the best central defenders to have ever played.”

    Philipp Lahm
Lahm was one of the most solid, consistent performers in his 517 Bayern Munich and 113 Germany appearances, again topped off by lifting the World Cup.
Pirlo said: “One of those players who never makes mistakes, always so reliable for Germany and Bayern. Probably doesn’t always get the credit, because it’s just so normal for him to be playing at such a high level now.”
    Gennaro Gattuso
The tough-tackling, no-nonsense midfielder was perfect foil for Pirlo, allowing the pass maestro to strut his stuff and pull the strings.
Pirlo’s review: “Rino is the opposition’s nightmare. Even in a training game, he plays like it is the World Cup final. The style of his game allows his team-mates time on the ball. Every team needs a Gattuso.”
    Xavi
Everyone knows all about Xavi’s quality, as the metronome in a Barcelona side that ticked better than most.
Pirlo added: “Another intelligent midfield player. Didn’t need to spend the whole time running but would control so many games for Barcelona and Spain with his intelligence and range of passing.”

    Paul Scholes
Played out on the left for England, Scholes was at his best pinging the ball around from the middle of the park – and hitting the odd wondergoal.
Pirlo’s verdict: “The truly great English midfield player of the generation. Didn’t just play the game, he thought about the game. You could see every pass, every decision, was based on his intelligence and understanding.”
    Kaka
AC Milan won the 2007 Champions League – and a large part of that was down to the Brazilian’s excellence.
Pirlo said: “I remember how badly we took it as a team when Kaka left Milan. For two or three years he was the best player in the world. There was a point when teams just had no idea how to stop him.”
    Lionel Messi
The winner of four Champions Leagues, six Ballons d’Or and countless other honours and awards, Messi is regarded as the greatest of all time by many, including Pirlo.
Pirlo gushed: “Has achieved so much, but still I am sure will achieve so much more. I don’t need to talk in detail about what he is capable of. Everybody knows he is one of the greatest ever already.”

    Fillipo Inzaghi
A lethal finisher inside the box, Inzaghi is one of the best strikers Italy have produced over the years.
Pirlo lauded: “Just the perfect goal scorer. We had this most incredible understanding. We did not even have to look for each other. He knew what pass I would make and I knew where he would be. You gave him a chance and he would take it.”

Robert Lewandowski is BETTER than Lionel Messi, claims Matthaus ahead of Barcelona vs Bayern Champions League clash

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI is BETTER than Lionel Messi, according to Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus.
The Polish striker, 31, has been in phenomenal touch of late – scoring twice in the Champions League last-16 second leg against Chelsea.

Lewandowski’s brace helped Bayern win 7-1 on aggregate and set up a quarter-final clash against Messi’s Barcelona.
But Matthaus, who made over 400 appearances for Bayern, said the Catalan giants should not be feared.
He told Bild: “Messi faces his successor as the best player in the world: Robert Lewandowski.
“He is the best player, not just the best forward.

“The Barca of today is no longer the same as before.
“They have Messi, of course. A player like him is always capable of genius.
“But he alone will not be enough against this Bayern. Barcelona does not scare me.”

    5

Odds for the winner of the 2020 Ballon d’Or before it was axed
Lewandowski’s ridiculously rich vein of form has seen him bag 53 goals in just 44 games in all competitions this season.

He found the net 34 times in 31 Bundesliga appearances as the Bavarian club lifted their eighth league title in a row in June.
But the former Borussia Dortmund forward has shown he can do it on the European stage too.
Incredibly, Lewandowski now averages a goal EVERY 48 minutes in the Champions League this season.
His red hot form saw him become a 3/1 favourite to claim the Ballon d’Or before the gong was axed after the coronavirus pandemic impacted the season.

    5

It was the first time in 64 years the annual celebration of the world’s best player has been scrapped and will have been a bitter blow to Lewandowski who had a great shout at claiming glory.
But if Bayern can go all the way in the Champions League, it should help soften the blow for their No9.
Lewandowski is yet to win the competition having lost the 2013 final to Bayern when at Dortmund.

PSG announce positive coronavirus test at their training ground just 24 hours before Atalanta clash in Champions League

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN confirmed a positive coronavirus test at the club’s training ground – just 24 hours before their Champions League quarter-final.
The French champions made the announcement of the anonymous player’s result on Tuesday afternoon.

PSG tweeted: “Tests have revealed that a player at the Paris Saint-Germain training centre has tested positive for Covid-19.
“In accordance with the health protocol in force, the player has been isolated from the rest of the group and other tests will be carried out soon.
“In agreement with the Versailles club (N3), the friendly match which was to take place against the U19 team was therefore cancelled.”
It is therefore understood the player is not part of the first team.

Fortunately for Thomas Tuchel’s squad, they are already in Lisbon making their final preparations to take on Atalanta tonight.
The team trained at the Estadio Da Luz yesterday and could have Kylian Mbappe available after an ankle injury.
Midfielder Marco Verratti is expected to miss the game with a calf injury while Angel Di Maria is suspended.
Due to coronavirus’ incubation period where carriers are asymptomatic, it could cause concern for the senior side – although they will be continually tested throughout the festival of football in the Portuguese capital.

Atletico Madrid, who would face PSG if both teams will their quarters this week, were also rocked by a coronavirus outbreak this week.
But for Diego Simeone’s side, the positive tests were within the first team as Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko caught the disease.
Both players will therefore miss the LaLiga side’s clash against RB Leipzig on Thursday and have not travelled from Madrid.

What happens if Wolves win Europa League? Will Chelsea lose Champions League spot?

THE Premier League may have finally ended, 352 days after it begun all the way back in August last year.
But that doesn’t mean that the drama is quite over yet for the unforgettable 2019-20 season.

    2

But if Wolves were to win the Europa League and clinch a spot in its more illustrious sister competition for next year – would that lead to fourth-placed Chelsea missing out as Spurs did in 2012?
Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all earned direct entry into next season’s Champions League.
Leicester and FA Cup winners Arsenal will enter the Europa League at the group stage, while Spurs will have to win a qualifying round.
    This could all change, however.

    WOLVES REPRIEVE?
Arsenal’s FA Cup win has bumped Wolves out of Europa League qualification for next season.
But if Wolves were to win the Europa League, however, they would gain direct entry into the Champions League group stage… but NOT at the expense of Chelsea.

Linfield set for Champions League bye after KF Drita’s entire squad were placed in quarantine over coronavirus outbreak

NORTHERN Ireland champions Linfield are set to get a bye through to the next round of the Champions League – because their Kosovan opponents have a Covid-19 outbreak.
Linfield were due to play KF Drita in a preliminary round tie on neutral territory in Uefa’s home town of Nyon, Switzerland.

But after a second Drita player tested positive – despite the whole squad having passed Covid-19 tests before flying to Switzerland, the Swiss health authorities ordered the entire travelling club staff into quarantine.
With the winners of the tie due to play Polish champions Legia Warsaw in the first round next Tuesday, Uefa are expected to announce Linfield will go through by default.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s next two games have been postponed after defender Boli Bolingoli travelled to coronavirus-hit Spain without the club’s knowledge.
The Scottish Premiership games against St Mirren on Wednesday night and Saturday’s home game against Aberdeen will be delayed.

Following Bolingoli’s Spain trip, Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that “we shouldn’t expect to see Celtic or Aberdeen play over the course of the coming week.”

    2

And a further statement from the government confirmed that their next two games will not take place on the scheduled dates.
Sturgeon said at a press conference: “I don’t want the season to be in jeopardy.
“I don’t want people who are not responsible for this to pay the price but we have to be very clear that this situation is not acceptable.

“We’ll set out the conclusion of the talks later today but as a minimum, you should not expect to see Aberdeen or Celtic play over the course of the coming week.
“By putting this is as clearly as I can in language that the football world will understand, consider today the yellow card.
“The next time it will be the red card because you will leave us with absolutely no choice.”

There have now been TWO breaches just weeks into the new season.
Bolingoli’s actions come just a week after two Aberdeen stars tested positive for the virus.
Six others were forced to quarantine for 14 days after visiting a pub after the Dons game against Rangers.
