Chelsea leave Thiago Silva at home to have rest as squad take stroll to stretch legs ahead of Krasnodar clash

CHELSEA took a morning stroll without veteran Thiago Silva ahead of their Champions League clash with Krasnodar this evening.
Boss Frank Lampard has elected to leave the 36-year-old in London to rest, as he juggles his squad with games coming thick and fast.

The veteran impressed in last week’s 0-0 draws with Sevilla and Manchester United, as the Blues kept back-to-back clean sheets.
But with Chelsea having made the 2,000-plus mile trip to Russia, the Brazilian has been given a well-earned night off.
Kurt Zouma is likely to be selected in central defence, with Antonio Rudiger, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen also vying for a start.

Fans excitedly tried to get selfies in front of their favourite players, as the tracksuit-clad stars stretched their legs.

All players were responsibly masked up as they adhere to Covid protocol.
Krasnodar have had coronavirus issues mounting up, with eight players unavailable for tonight’s clash – although not all through Covid-19.
Ex-Newcastle playmaker Remy Cabella tested positive, however, prior to their trip to Rennes.
Evgeniy Markov has also contracted the virus.

Nonetheless, Krasnodar managed to come away from France with a handy 1-1 draw, after Cristian Ramirez cancelled out Serhou Guirassy’s penalty.
The Russians then lost on their return to domestic action at the weekend, going down 3-1 at home to Spartak Moscow.
Chelsea’s players will have some home fans cheering against them, with Krasnodar able to admit supporters in accordance with Uefa’s 30 per cent capacity limit.

Marseille players blasted for not taking knee in support of Black Lives Matter before Man City clash

MARSEILLE have been blasted for not taking the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement before their Champions League clash against Manchester City.
As the Citizens starting XI took the knee after referee Tobias Stieler blew the whistle to start the game, the Ligue 1 side stood around the centre circle.

Ligue 1 side Marseille didn’t take the knee ahead of their encounter against Manchester City

Players, coaches and other staff members have all been taking the knee in England to show their support in the fight against racism.
Triggered by the death of George Floyd in May, the gesture has been seen as a symbol in the global fight against racism.
However, French teams have not adopted the pre-match ritual.
According to reports in France, Marseille gathered round the centre circle to hold a minute’s silence for Samuel Paty – a teacher who was murdered in a terrorist attack last week.

Marseille’s Twitter account suggested the players showed their support through “unity and respect”.

However, some fans were left furious with Andre Villas-Boas’ side for not taking a knee in support towards the Black Lives Matter movement.
One fan tweeted: “Marseille players refused to take a knee in tonight’s game vs Man City. Absolutely disgraceful.”
Another commented: “Marseille refuse to take the knee. Poor show!”

A third added: “Marseille should be ashamed for not taking the knee.”

Meanwhile one stated: “F*** Marseille not taking the knee.”
Manchester City emerged as 3-0 victors away at Marseille to make it two wins out of two in Group C.
Summer signing Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 18th minute, with Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling finding the back of the net late on.

The German used lockdown to get hench

The Bavarians went on to win 2-1 in Russia to stay top of Group A.
But attention was on Goretzka after the images surfaced online.
The German was famously slender but used lockdown to transform his body.

And fans are still fixated on the 25-year-old’s physique months down the line.
After Goretzka put his side 1-0 up in Moscow, pictures showed him celebrating with his team-mates with a huge rip along the seam of his shirt by his left tricep.
And the images sent Twitter into meltdown.
Liam wrote: “Leon Goretzka’s triceps are so immense his shirt can no longer contain them.”

Tombo quipped: “Goretzka is too strong for his shirt now.”

Patrik added: “Is Goretzka seriously so ripped that he has torn his shirt sleeve at the seam?”
And Aaron wrote: “Did Leon Goretzka flex out of his shirt lmao.”
Elsewhere, yesterday SunSport exclusively revealed Tariq Lamptey will be offered a new Brighton contract to ward off interest from Bayern.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo play against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona, and when will the Juventus ace’s coronavirus test happen?

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S return for Juventus will not happen against Barcelona after the results of a THIRD Covid-19 test.
Ronaldo sat out the 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona on Sunday after being told to self isolate because of a positive coronavirus test while on international duty.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was also unable to face Dynamo Kiev last Tuesday.
Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Juventus?
Ronaldo played for Portugal in their draw with France during the international break and was expected to feature against Sweden.
But the former Man Utd and Real Madrid star returned a positive test for Covid-19 and left Portugal’s training camp.
He is currently self isolating and has reportedly displayed no symptoms.

It has also been revealed Ronaldo has been sleeping separately from partner Georgina Rodriguez and his four children while isolating.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo posted a picture on Instagram of him relaxing by his pool during isolationCredit: instagram.com/cristiano
Ronaldo travelled from Portugal to Turin on a private air ambulance – but hit back at suggestions he’s broken protocol in the process.
CR7 said: “I did not break any protocol.
“They’re saying that I broke Italian laws but it’s all a lie.

“I spoke with my team and we have the responsibility to do things right.
“Everything was done with authorisation. Principally for the Italian man (Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadaforo) whose name I’m not going to say, it’s a lie, I abided by all the protocols.”

When will he return to action?
Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-awaited reunion with Barcelona and Lionel Messi will not take place after his third coronavirus test came back positive on Tuesday night – 24 hours before the match.
After testing positive again, he is now likely to make his Juventus return at Spezia on November 1.
Juve boss Andrea Pirlo said on Saturday: “As far as Cristiano Ronaldo is concerned, there has been no news. We await the results of the swabs.
“We did them this morning. He underwent the test at his home and if there is new news it will be communicated.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard claims he’s held to higher standard than other big six chiefs as he’s English

FRANK LAMPARD believes he is judged differently as the sole English boss at a top Premier League club.
Ahead of the trip to Russian side Krasnodar FC, Lamps, 42, is managing Chelsea in his second Champions League campaign.

Frank Lampard reckons he is judged to a higher standard than other big six managersCredit: AFP

The last Englishman to achieve that was legendary Sir Bobby Robson 17 years ago with Newcastle United.
Asked generally if he is scrutinised differently because he is from England, Lampard replied: “I think possibly, yes. Possibly, yes.
“When I got this job, a lot of people were questioning me. A lot of people told me: ‘Are you sure you want to take it because of opinion?’

“Sometimes people can be very quick to form opinions straightaway for whatever reason.

“Being a young English manager with one year at Derby some of that I understood.
“But we do have to judge people on face value like any manager, no matter of where you’re from. I was proud of what we achieved last season.”
The Chelsea boss hopes football owners will consider employing more home-grown talent in the future.
He said: “I was surprised by the stat when I was told it, joining the great Bobby Robson, and to be the only Englishman who has done it since.

“I don’t feel the responsibility of the ‘English managers’ union’.
“It was a long time ago, towards the end of my career, when I heard English managers would get jobs in the Premier League. There was a merry-go-round.
“But I think it’s slightly different. Sometimes now we see English managers showing their qualities in the game, throughout the Premier League and Championship.
“Hopefully there are more opportunities for them.
“Sometimes with the brilliant invasion of great quality coaches and players into the Premier League, sometimes our eyes go to that.
“It becomes very new and trendy, rightly so, with managers who have achieved so much. But hopefully we can also have managers at home who can do the jobs as well.”
Chelsea come into this European tie on the back of two successive 0-0 draws.
Edouard Mendy will keep his place in goal with Kepa Arrizabalaga unavailable due to a shoulder problem.

German international Antonio Rudiger could make his first appearance of the season after Lampard confirmed they had discussed his future.
Brazilian defender Thiago Silva has not travelled for this second Group E match.
Kurt Zouma, who celebrated his 26th birthday last night, admitted the players speak French on the pitch in defence whenever Silva is starting.
Zouma said: “At the minute we are talking in French because Thiago is still learning.
“With the other guys we talk English. Edouard understands English very well, can speak English. Naturally I speak French to Thiago.
“My best birthday present? A clean sheet and a win would be perfect – that would be the best gift I’d like.
“I haven’t played before, no, on my birthday. This is the first time.”
Chelsea likely (4-2-3-1): Mendy; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Chilwell; Kante, Kovacic; Ziyech, Havertz, Pulisic; Werner

Marseille vs Man City LIVE REACTION: Sterling, Ferran Torres and Gundogan on target for dominant City

MAN CITY continued their perfect start to the Champions League with a dominant 3-0 win at Marseille.
Ferran Torres, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling scored for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Velodrome.

Follow ALL of the latest reaction below…

    GOODNIGHT!
In the end, it was straightforward for City, the scoreline certainly made it seem like that.
But Marseille made them work for their three goals.
Torres, Gundogan and Sterling did the damage, and it’s Olympiakos up next in the competition for Guardiola’s side.
They’ll be looking to make it three wins from three while Marseille struggle near the bottom of their group.
    Until then, goodnight everyone!

    PEP ON CRITICISM
“We have to accept the criticism. We play every three days, when you win it’s good but if you don’t people want to destroy everything,” he says.
“But it’s about the chairman and everyone else understanding. Part of the criticism was right, but you’ve got to accept it.
“It’s part of our job. It’s about where we’ve come from in the last month, with lack of preparation, injuries and Covid-19 but the Champions League is in a good place now.
“I’m sure we’re going to find that consistency.”

    PEP SPEAKS
“We played really well, we didn’t concede much and we were in control, patient and aggressive without the ball,” he says.
“I’m so satisfied with the performance and result, it’s always difficult to win away.
“We can play on both sides, we tried to play high and wide to stretch the pitch. Raheem Sterling was exceptional, Phil [Foden] as well.
“We didn’t expect them to play five at the back until we saw the team. Porto was the same. As much as we play against five at the back we started to take the control and rhythm.
“We were so stable defensively. Aymeric [Laporte] was good, Kyle [Walker] is in the best form since we’ve been together, Oleksandr [Zinchenko] helped us, John [Stones] played good minutes. I’m so satisfied with the way we played.”

    BIG WIN
City went top of their group tonight with a 3-0 win over Marseille.

    ACTION AREAS
Here’s where most of the possession was tonight.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
In the end, it was easy, but Marseille made it a tough task for periods.
Torres opened the scoring before Gundogan made it two and Sterling tapped in to make it three.
City top of the group with six points while Porto are second with three.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
    That’s it for tonight!
Final score: : MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
90+2. Nearly over here in Marseille, three minutes of added time.
It’s been a good night for City, though it was frustrating for long periods.
They’ve bagged the three points in the end, though.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    89. Marseille, ironically, having their best spell of possession now!
Well, City have given up I suppose.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    86. Payet and Gueye come on for Marseille, but it’s a little too late now isn’t it.
City just waiting for this game to end now really.

    THIRD TIME LUCKY
What a few minutes City have just had. 3-0.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    83. De Bruyne receives a pass from Mahrez.
And the Belgian cruises past a defender before squaring for Sterling to tap home.
    Game. Set. Match.
    3-0 to City!

    GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!
    3-0. RAHEEM STERLING.
    CRUISE CONTROL!

    MARSEILLE 0-2 MAN CITY
    81. City bopping it around really freely now. Game is won, it’s just a matter of seeing it out.
Marseille haven’t really laid a glove on their opponents tonight.

    MARSEILLE 0-2 MAN CITY
    78. Well, it had been coming… again.
Foden picks the ball up down the left, crosses for Sterling at the back post. He heads it down and Gundogan taps it in.
    Game. Put. To. Bed.
    2-0.
John Stones comes on for Foden and Laporte goes off for John Stones. Bernardo Silva also comes on for Gundogan.

    GUNDOOOOOOOOOOO!! pic.twitter.com/ldUJS2nCmC
    — Manchester City (@ManCity) October 27, 2020

    GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!
    2-0 TO CITY! GUNDOGAN!

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    76. Ruben Dias now trying to probe in midfield, a second goal would really put this game to bed for the away side.
Darke jokes on commentary that it’s been death by a 1000 passes for Marseille. He’s not wrong there.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    74. Cancelo providing the trickery down the left and he wins a corner.
De Bruyne takes and passes straight back to Cancelo but takes it back and his cross is cleared.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    72. Sterling breaks forward and passes it to Gundogan in the middle but the German’s shot is straight at Mandanda.
The ball is played forward for Sterling who finds a gap in the defence but the pass is too strong.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    70. Marseille still in the game here. No matter how well City are playing they’re still playing it risky here with the marginal scoreline.
They really should go for this second goal now.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    67. Some danger for City as Marseille get forward with Sansom and Amavi but City clear.
Cancelo about to come on for Zinchenko.
Perhaps a different dimension down the left for City now.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    65. Rongier comes off while Morgan Sansom comes on for the home side.
Benedetto and Payet still on the bench for Marseille, too.
Foden tries to venture upfield for City but once again he’s Dispossessed. Not been his best night.
