Watch Marcus Rashford give penalty to Martial even though he’s on hat-trick as Man Utd hero is dubbed ‘captain material’

MARCUS RASHFORD hit a stunning second-half hat-trick as Manchester United hammered RB Leipzig 5-0.
But the much-loved superstar was prepared to risk not claiming the match ball as he selflessly handed Anthony Martial the responsibility of taking a penalty in the dying seconds before eventually claiming his third.

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) October 28, 2020

The striker came on with 27 minutes to play and struck in the 74th and 78th minute before eventually sealing his 18-minute treble in injury time.
Rashford, 22, had just moments earlier picked up the ball when United were awarded a spot-kick, but he gave it to his team-mate, who rifled home from the spot to get off the mark for the campaign.
He said: “I think the manager told me when I came on to up the tempo and of course for us it means going forward and there was definitely space there.

“We looked like we could score every time we went forward. It was a real team performance and those who started the game did well and those who came on did well.

“We can’t ask for much more than that in terms of attitude and intensity and intent to go and kill a game off.”
Rashford did well to ignore the linesman’s flag in running on to Bruno Fernandes through ball for his opener and VAR proved his run had started in his own half.
Rashford said: “I thought to be fair I was in my own half so I was a bit confused when the flag went up but all you can do is wait and see and after the ball is in the net and that is it.
“We have to work with VAR. it’s part of the game now and the quicker we get used to it the better.”

Rashford was almost denied the hat-trick when his kind gesture to Martial paid off for his French pal.
Asked if there had been a chat between the two, Rashford said: “A little bit yeah but I feel confident with Anthony taking them as well so there was no problem.”
That made it two wins from two in Champions League Group H.
Rashford who is making headlines off the pitch for his work in feeding poverty hit children is doing the business on it too against sides that excelled in the Champions League last season.
He scored the late winner last week against finalists PSG and now this against the Bundesliga leaders and a side who reached the semi-finals.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Marcus took his chances incredibly well.
“Marcus has shown he can keep focusing on what’s important on and off the pitch.
“He came on, did well, made an impact and that is what you want from the subs but that is only possible though because the others had laid the groundwork.”

Juventus 0-2 Barcelona LIVE RESULT: Messi penalty secures Barca win as Morata has three goals disallowed

BARCELONA have secured an impressive win at Juventus as Lionel Messi’s penalty followed up a strike from range from Ousmane Dembele.
While hosts Juventus threatened, with Alvaro Morata having three goals disallowed, Barcelona remained comfortable for the most part.

The Juve cause was also not helped by Merih Demiral being sent off for a second booking with five minutes to go.

    ARRIVEDERCI FROM TURIN
Reports of Barcelona’s demise may have been premature.
Following boardroom chaos, transfer sagas and defeat in El Clasico, Barca had been on the floor, but they bounced back this evening with an impressive Champions League win in Italy.
In control from the start, the Spanish side dominated a weakened Juventus to prevail 2-0, and, while there was no Cristiano Ronaldo on display, there was certainly a Lionel Messi.
The Barcelona captain was remarkable at times, gliding across the pitch with the grace that we have come to adore.
He brought up the 300th assist of a sensational career with a brilliant crossfield pass for Ousmane Dembele to open the scoring, and then bagged his 70th Champions League group stage goal from the penalty spot with seconds remaining.
By their high standards, Juventus were poor, and their reliance on the absent Ronaldo showed.
Mind you, Alvaro Morata demonstrated that he at least knows how to find the net, he’s just unsure of the offside rule.
Three times the former Chelsea striker believed he had scored, only to be denied by a combination of the linesman’s flag and the video officials.
A bad night for the Old Lady was summed up by the late red card shown to Merih Demiral, sent off for two bookable offences.
The result is a reprieve for the underfire Ronald Koeman, but, for Andrea Pirlo, the Juve jury remains out.
Thanks for being with us and goodnight.

    G AND EASY
It’s not all bad news for Juventus this evening.
A last minute equaliser for Ferencvaros against Dynamo Kyiv means there is still daylight between the Italians in second place in Group G and the other two sides.
Barcelona lead the way with maximum points from two games.

    MESSI ON THE SPOT
Barcelona’s talisman seals the victory in the final minute with a penalty.

    MORATA MISERY
Juventus forward Alvaro Morata had the ball in the back of the net three times this evening, only to find each one ruled out for offside.
That made it five disallowed goals for Morata – all ruled out for offside – in his last four games.

    MESSI THE MAIN MAN AGAIN
It was another impressive display from the Barcelona captain, and the club’s social media team couldn’t help having a dig at absent friends.

    SEEING RED
Juventus’ Merih Demiral is given his marching orders in the closing stages at the Allianz Stadium.

    FT: JUVENTUS 0-2 BARCELONA
Barcelona win away at Juventus for the first time despite all their recent turmoil.
Ousmane Dembele’s deflected goal in the first half and Lionel Messi’s late penalty did the damage, and it was the least the Spaniards deserved as they bettered their hosts in every area – despite Alvaro Morata’s trio of disallowed goals.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
    IT’S ALL OVER IN TURIN!

    JUVENTUS 0-2 BARCELONA
    90+3. Fati must score!
    Fati must shoot?!
The teenage top scorer, one on one with Szczesny, instead looks for a pass to Martin Braithwaite that isn’t on, and only succeeds in rolling the ball out for a goalkick.
    Bizarre.

    90. Well, he was never going to miss, was he?
Sending Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way, Lional Messi is cool as you like as he sweeps his left-footed strike into the top corner from 12 yards.
The spotkick was justified as Federico Bernardeschi, clumsy and lazy, bundled into the back of Ansu Fati as the substitute burst into the box.
It’s Messi’s 70th goal in the Champions League group stage in just 74 games.
    Juventus 0-2 BARCELONA

    GOOOOOOOAALLLLLL!!
    MESSI MAKES NO MISTAKE!!

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    88. Ronald Koeman gives Junior Firpo a runout for the last couple of minutes.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    85. Juve will play out the final five minutes with ten men because Merih Demiral has been sent off for two yellow cards.
The Turkish international tried to pull out as he flung his boot in the direction of Miralem Pjanic, but the damage had already been done.
Under the nose of the Dutch referee, he had no hesitation in pulling out a yellow card followed by the red.
A hard task just got tougher for the hosts.

    RED CARD!!
MERIH DEMIRAL IS GIVEN HIS MARCHING ORDERS!

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    83. Pirlo calls for reinforcements with Arthur thrown on to replace Bentancur.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    81. Have the Italians got an equaliser in them as we head into the final ten minutes?
If they show the same amount of fight as Danilo just did when not being awarded a throw-in, they may just have a chance.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    78. It’s Rabiot’s turn for a booking.
The Frenchman struggled to keep pace Messi so took the easy option of bundling him over from behind.
It’s Juve’s fourth caution of the night. Meanwhile, the recipient of their first – Dejan Kulusevski – has gone off to be replaced by Weston McKennie.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    75. Griezmann in inches away from bagging Barcelona a second.
The game is opening up now, and the French international found himself in plenty of space on the left as he dragged his shot not only past Szczesny, but also the outside of the far post.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    74. Cuadrado receives a yellow card for diving, having gone past Lenglet in the area.
It’s the correct decision, and the Colombian is perhaps fortunate it’s not his second of the evening following his theatrics with Alba in the first half.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    73. Brilliant footwork from you know who.
Messi’s trickery and class takes him away from Bonucci with the Juventus defender barely noticing.
Into the box, only a last gasp block from Danilo denies the Argentine making it 2-0.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    70. They’re still fighting but it’s probably best if they don’t do it like this.
Demiral goes into the book for a wild hack as Messi threatened to dance through the Juventus defence.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    69. Juve are still fighting here.
Moments after Kulusevski had been off target with an audacious chip, Rabiot is sent through on goal by Morata’s clever through ball.
The angle is against him, and so is hit shooting ability as the Frenchman slides his effort well wide of the near post.

    JUVENTUS 0-1 BARCELONA
    66. Barcelona goalscorer, Ousmane Dembele, has run his race for the evening.
The French forward took advantage of a rare start to score, but will now take a breather to allow 17-year-old sensation Ansu Fati a runout.

Man Utd vs RB Leipzig LIVE RESULT: Rashford hat-trick secures Red Devils rout in Champions League

MANCHESTER UNITED have made it two big Champions League wins out of two, following last week’s win at PSG.
A goal from Mason Greenwood, an Anthony Martial penalty and a Marcus Rashford hat-trick leave the Red Devils very much in command of Group H.

    THAT’S A WRAP

    PICK OF THE BUNCH
Ole Gunnar Solskjær shuffled his starting XI this evening and was asked about several players that were gifted a start.
Speaking of Mason Greenwood’s goal, Solskjær said: “I’m not surprised. He’s so efficient in front of goal, he’s a great finisher- I was pleased with the timing of his run and the pass from Paul.”
On Van de Beek’s performance, the Manchester United boss said: “He’s a fantastic player, you should see the work he puts down both on and off the ball.
“He covers the ground and is so clever with his movement. I’m really pleased.
“We’ve made some changes today, as we have to be ready for Sunday’s game as the season is so relentless.”

    BOSS SPEAKS
Speaking after the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjær was asked about Marcus Rashford’s incredible performance.
The Manchester United boss said: “He came on, did well. You want that from the subs, but it’s only possible when the others have laid the groundwork- what a shift they’ve put in as Leipzig do make you work.
“We had to dig deep and work hard for each other; spaces open up when you’re winning and we knew we could rest a few today, as the season is relentless.
“This group is coming together; of course we’ve added some quality players, of course the more quality and spirit you have, the better the performance.”

    WHAT A GUY
Despite having the opportunity to get a hattrick, Rashford stepped aside to allow Martial to take the penalty this evening.
Martial calmly slotted it into the back of the net, before Rashford went and got his hattrick to make it five goals for United .

    UNITED FRONT
Manchester United legend Gary Neville was very happy with what he saw from United this evening…

    MARC HIS WORDS
Marcus Rashford has had a flying start to the season.
From nine appearances, he’s bagged seven goals and two assists, across all competitions.

    MAN OF THE MATCH
Speaking after the game, Marcus Rashford said: “I think the manager wanted me to up the tempo when I came on and we did that.
“There was definitely spaces there and today we found the spaces; we got Bruno and Paul on the ball and had Anthony running forward.
“I think it was a real team performance; the ones that started did well and the ones that came on did too. As a squad we can’t ask for much more than that in terms of attitude and intensity.”
When asked to comment on Mason Greenwood scoring with his first Champions League shot, Rashford laughed and said: ” It’s not surprising, he’s an outstanding player.
“He just needs to keep his head down and he can do amazing things.”

    HATTRICK HERO
Safe to say it doesn’t take Rashford long to do good!
The forward only needed 16 minutes to score three goals.
All after another busy week of standing up for children across the country.

    90. Three goals in less than 16 minutes for the wonderful man saving children across the country!

    GOOOOAL

    MAN UTD 4-0 RB LEIPZIG
    89. Ole looks delighted with what he’s seen this evening; ten goals in their last four games across all competitions.

    MAN UTD 4-0 RB LEIPZIG
    88. Fernandes broke into the top of the box, desperately looking to square it to Cavani, but had to bide his time.
Cavani makes a beeline for the by-line and upon receiving the ball, sweeps it into the net with his left foot.
    VAR complete- goal disallowed.

    MAN UTD 4-0 RB LEIPZIG
    87. The ball is in the back of the net again- this time courtesy of Cavani, but the flag is up.
Although, as with two decisions thus far… we’ll have to wait and see what VAR says.

    87. Extremely selfless from Rashford, who could be on a hattrick as he allows Martial to take the pen.
A firm penalty is fired low into the bottom left-corner of the goal, although it did look as though Gulacsi got a touch to it.
    MAN UTD 4-0 RB LEIPZIG

    MAN UTD 3-0 RB LEIPZIG
    84. Martial is taken down in the box by the man that was viewed as the saviour by Leipzig.
Fred slid the ball through to Martial, who only had Sabitzer left to beat.
But Sabitzer slid to make a last-ditch challenge and pulled the Frenchman to the floor.

    MAN UTD 3-0 RB LEIPZIG
    84. PEN TO UNITED!!

    MAN UTD 3-0 RB LEIPZIG
    82. Rashford is a star both on and off the pitch – he’s been untouchable since he came on.
He’s just been on another solo run, making a mockery of four white shirts; he danced between the first two on the edge of the area, before faking a shot, he raced towards the centre of the box but his shot was eventually blocked.

    MAN UTD 3-0 RB LEIPZIG
    81. Ole makes his final changes;
Tuanzebe and Cavani replace Wan-Bissaka and Pogba.

    77. Before we could even catch our breath, Rashford makes it three!
Fred drew out Leipzig’s defence, which gave Rashford a ton of space when the ball fell to him.
He makes space on the edge of the area to get past a final man, Upamecano, and fires a shot into the bottom corner.

Man Utd should stick to defenders they have as transfer target Upamecano bamboozled by Rashford and Co

MAYBE this defence of Manchester United’s is not that bad after all.
It was the lack of a centre-back purchase that so angered United fans in the last transfer window.

Man Utd transfer target Dayot Upamecano, left, failed to impress at Old Trafford as RB Leipzig were thumped 5-0Credit: The Mega Agency

Anger that grew after conceding 11 goals in their first three league games.
Still this was a defensive unit last season whose 36 league goals against was were bettered only by Manchester City with 35 and Champions Liverpool with 33.
They also notched up the most clean sheets of any club in the top five European leagues in all competitions.

The back four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victory Lindelof and Luke Shaw was looking like a strong unit in the clubs run to third place and three Cup semi-finals.

Still people always remember the games that went wrong, not least at the start of this season.
The 6-1 defeat to Spurs was unforgiveable but there were reasons for United’s shaky start.
They only had a 34 day break between the end of last season and beginning of this and a week’s training together .
Maguire back with his arrest in Mykonos still on his mind. But the ship has been steadied.

They only two goals they have conceded in their last four games against Newcastle and PSG were unfortunate own goals.
In Paris of Axel Tuanzebe since December 2019 reminded people what United already have in their squad.
Another academy product he was brilliant up against one of Europe’s most feared forward lines most notably in silencing the prolific Kylian Mbappe, scorer of 90 goals in the last three seasons. He is most definitely a star of the future.
So having handled the best team in France and kept a clean sheet against Chelsea, last night it was the current Bundesliga leaders and the defence was exceptional again not least Luke Shaw.
To think this was the night when Dayot Upamenco was going to showcase his abilities right in front of the man tipped to buy him.
Ole Solskjaer said he was looking forward to getting an up close view of Upamenco when RB Leipzig took on his United side.

He diplomatically batted off stories of him wanting to trigger the central defender’s release £38million release clause at the end of this season.
But there is no doubt the interest is there and why not with the French international attracting interest from around Europe.
This perhaps was not the night the 22-year-old had in mind.
He is a player with the lot, a presence, a reading of the game and a calmness on the ball when pressed. He can pick a pass too.
Last night he could not cope with United’s attacking threat. Note his part in United’s opening goal.
Looking over his shoulder he spotted Mason Greenwood’s darting run behind him but simply could not match it, nor reach the fine through ball from Paul Pogba for the 21st minute goal.
Later in the game he was part of a back four picked apart as United excelled once more in Group H. United up and running and defending.

Man Utd ratings: Pogba makes impressive return as Fred dominates in midfield but Martial struggles against RB Leipzig

Mason Greenwood opened the scoring before super sub Marcus Rashford bagged a hat-trick and Anthony Martial converted from the spot.

SunSport’s Joe Miles rated Manchester United’s squad following the 5-0 victory.
    David De Gea – 6/10
United’s No1 made two good saves in the first half to keep the score level.
But luckily for him, they were the only two shots that RB Leipzig managed to have on target.

    Luke Shaw – 7
The left-back pressed well up the pitch to give United another attacking option.

He even delivered a brilliant cross into the box – which left fans stunned as they claimed it was his ‘first good delivery in four years’.
    Harry Maguire – 6
It was a routine defensive performance from the England centre-back.
He lacked disciplined at times as he lunged into challenges and argued with the ref, but aside from that he looked on form.

    Victor Lindelof – 7
Solid at the back again tonight from Lindelof.

The Swedish star looks at home when he lines up alongside Maguire in the heart of United’s defence.
He won a load of aerial challenges and continued to sweep the ball out from the back.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 8
The 22-year-old continued to impress after his top performance against Chelsea last weekend.
Wan-Bissaka dominated the right-hand side, played the ball out well from the back and was rarely caught out of position.
    Nemanja Matic – 7
He got booked in the first half for a raised arm to the face of Emil Forsberg.
Solskjaer played it safe by swapping him for Scott McTominay in the second half.
Prior to that, Matic kept himself busy in the midfield and broke down a number of Leipzig attacks.

Paul Pogba made his return to Manchester United’s starting line-upCredit: Kevin Quigley-The Daily Mail
    Paul Poba – 8
The Frenchman showed Solskjaer what he’s been missing as he created Greenwood’s opener.
Pogba picked the ball up in the midfield and slotted it into the path of the 20-year-old to create the opener in an impressive return.
    Fred – 8
Superb performance from Fred in the midfield – particularly in the first half.
The 27-year-old managed to match Leipzig’s intensity and got stuck into every challenge.
He made plenty of interceptions too.
Donny van de Beek – 7
A calm and composed performance from the 23-year-old on his first Champions League start for United.
He did everything that Solskjaer could have asked of him before he was swapped for Fernandes in the second half.
    Mason Greenwood – 8
He made no mistake as he struck the opener past Peter Gulacsi and into the far corner.
Gary Neville loved his finish – but some fans were convinced it was offside.
Another impressive display from the forward up until he was swapped for Marcus Rashford in the second half.

    Anthony Martial – 6
The forward has insisted he does not feel threatened by the arrival of Edinson Cavani.
But after that performance, he probably should be.
Martial had a handful of chances inside of the box, but continued to run himself into trouble and lose possession.
Redeemed himself towards the end as he scored from the penalty spot, but there’s certainly room for improvement.

    Subs
    Marcus Rashford – 10
Clambered off the bench to silence the critics who said he should have done better with his chances at the weekend.
Scored three excellent goals that showed his combination of pace, power and skill in just 18 minutes to seal an impressive win for the Red Devils.
    Bruno Fernandes – 7
    Scott McTominay – 6
    Axel Tuanzebe – 6
    Edinson Cavani – 6

Amazingly, the Spaniard has actually found the net 18 times this year – but 11 of them have now been ruled out for offside.
It is a feeling the 28-year-old is growing accustomed to and it has only been a few days since he last suffered the same frustration.
VAR scuppered him again on Sunday in domestic action on another frustrating night for Juve as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Verona in Serie A.

Before that he came into the clash in stunning form following his return to the Italian champions in the summer.
Morata had three goals in three games but he has now fired a blank in his last two thanks to the eagle eye of VAR.
Juventus won 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev last week in their opening group game but they were unable to find a way past Barcelona – despite the recent turmoil both on the pitch and off it at the Nou Camp.
Dembele’s deflected striker broke the deadlock with just 14 minutes on the clock and they managed to hold on to that advantage until the dying stages.

But as United scored a resounding victory over the Bundesliga leaders- the sort which would have reverberated across Europe – Greenwood ledthe way for Rashford to score an 18-minute hat-trick as a sub.
It was the 19-year-old Greenwood, who had been sent home in disgracedfrom England duty last month, who started the rout with the benefit ofa fag-paper VAR call.

And when Rashford replaced Greenwood just after the hour, he ignoredan erroneous offside flag to benefit from another tight VAR call forthe first of his own quick-fire double.

Rashford’s selflessness is well-documented in his campaigning againstchild hunger and poverty.
He showed the same quality on the pitch when he gave up a chance tocomplete a hat-trick from the penalty spot, allowing Anthony Martialto net United’s fourth.
But then he secured the matchball anyway with a thumping finish ininjury-time.
What a magnificent night this was for United. Perhaps the best resultof Solskjaer’s reign – given the width of the scoreline, better eventhan their two famous away victories over Paris St Germain.

Forget the histories of these two clubs – United 20-time champions ofEngland, Leipzig formed the year after United had won their mostrecent European Cup.
Because the German club, top of the Bundeslia and Champions leaguesemi-finalists last term, came into this match looking the moresettled and accomplished team.

Yet United soaked up plenty of pressure and, in an era without homeadvantage, were able to play as the away team – which suits them -breaking with pace, finishing with dead-eyed efficiency.
This ‘group of death’ had looked a whole lot less fatal after lastweek’s win over PSG.
Still, being grouped with two of last season’s semi-finalists seemed atough ask for United – who have not reached the Champions League’slast four in nine seasons now.
Yet United have made light work of it.
Solskjaer made five changes from the side held by Chelsea on Saturday- Bruno Fernandes and Rashford the surprise admissions, with theUnited boss blaming fixture congestion.
Rashford hardly looked jaded when he got his chance.
Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann didn’t really need his extraordinarytailoring to make him noticed – at only 33, he has long been touted asa potential future manager of Europe’s most illustrious clubs.

Yet the man in the rascal sports jacket soon saw his side pushed backby a spell of United pressure – Fred’s deflected shot pushed aroundpost  by Peter Gulacsi.
And it was he restored pairing of Pogba and Greenwood which earnedUnited’s 21st-minute breakthrough – even if VAR was apparently caughtnapping.
Fred won possession and fed Pogba, who surged forward and expertlyweighted a pass for Greenwood to steer a first-time left-footed shotinside the far post.
Replays suggested Greenwood was offside by a toenail or so, evenmembers of the United coaching staff appeared to think so.
But VAR – seemingly more lenient than the Premier League version -gave the good old-fashioned benefit of the doubt to the attacker.
David De Gea soon had to push away a powerful effort from ChristopherNkunku with Leipzig looking confident and quick-witted in attack.
If the Germans were enjoying plenty of purposeful possession, then themore special moments belonged to United.
Early in the second half, Pogba produced another peachy pass torelease Anthony Martial, who wasted the half-chance.

Then Greenwood pulled a couple of bandy-legged step-overs out of hisparty bag and saw a ripping shot pushed away by Gulacsi.
Ibrahima Konate got away with a handball while grounded – the VARofficial a bleeding-heart liberal once more, as possessed to our ownhanging judges of Stockley Park.
Donny Van de Beek enjoyed some eye-catching moments as he earned hisfirst United start in an A-list fixture – including a tangle withMarcel Halstenberg which brought a decent penalty shout.
Soon after the hour, Greenwood made way for Rashford, last week’splasterer of Paris.
After De Gea was called into point-blank action to push over a Konateheader, Rashford came to the fore.
Again VAR favoured United, Rashford was inches inside his own halfwhen released by fellow sub Fernandes and he ignored an early, incorrect offside flag to advance and score with supreme cool.
Rashford’s second came courtesy of an excellent tackle from Fred, which turned into a pass, allowing the England forward to finish withrelish.
And when Martial was upended by Marcel Sabitzer, Rashford allowed theFrenchman his first goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Then came the emphatic finish and the completion of Rashford’s treble.
They reckon he can’t be a contender for BBC Sports Personality of theYEar because he hasn’t achieved enough ON the field.
    Are they kidding?

Chelsea ratings: Ziyech and Mendy shine while Rudiger makes steady return as Blues’ late show crushes Krasnodar

HAKIM ZIYECH turned in an instant masterclass to prove his fitness while fellow new boy Edouard Mendy again shone in goal as Chelsea ran riot late on in Russia to crush Krasnodar 4-0.
Here’s Simon Phillips’ player-by-player guide on a Champions League night where Antonio Rudiger was given his first Blues’ chance of the season, with Callum Hudson-Odoi also starting and scoring.

    Edouard Mendy – 9/10

He had a quiet first half, but the Russians stepped it up in the second half and Mendy became quite busy.
He pulled off a world-class fingertip save onto the cross bar to keep Chelsea in the lead.
    Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
The captain had another consistent performance at right back and was communicating well with the back line.
He did well going forward hitting a number of threatening crosses.

    Kurt Zouma – 8
Put his body on the line a few times battling for every loose ball, the Frenchman turned in another good performance at the back, proving just how important he has become for Chelsea this season.
    Antonio Rudiger – 7
Fairly quiet after not featuring for Chelsea all season.
Didn’t do a lot wrong, but hardly staked a strong claim for a regular starting place either.
    Ben Chilwell – 8
The England left-back was his usual energetic self, full of desire and battled hard at the back when Chelsea came under some pressure.

    Mateo Kovacic – 5
Hasn’t really featured much all season and unfortunately it showed in places.
He seemed to lack his passing accuracy and also gave away a few silly free-kicks. Kovacic had an evening to forget and was removed for Mount on 70 minutes.
    Jorginho – 5
Missed a penalty in the first half and looked rather off the pace after that.
It was a poor showing from the Italian and he was rightly subbed off for Kante on 70 minutes.

    Kai Havertz – 7
The German grew into the game and had a much better second half than the first. He was involved at times and linked up well on occasions with Werner and Ziyech.
Although he lacked a bit of confidence in the first half, he started getting on the ball and making things happen more in the second half.
    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 6
Scored in the first half and, even though he got a bit lucky with the keeper error, did very well to get the shot away.
Hudson-Odoi quite often over-played at times trying too hard to impress, wasted a few good chances to get into dangerous positions. He came off for Pulisic on 70 minutes.
    Hakim Ziyech – 9
Chelsea’s brightest attacking player on the night, the one who really looked like he was trying to make things happen.
A small ray of light for the Blues when others were not quite as good as they can be. Man of the Match.
    Timo Werner – 7
Did well to win a penalty in the first half, but other than that he struggled to really get involved until the second half.
He is far too isolated up top and was too quiet on the pitch once again. But took his penalty well and set up Ziyech to score.

    SUBS –
Christian Pulisic for Hudson-Odoi (70 mins) – 7.Lively when he came on and gave Chelsea the attacking injection they needed, before scoring one of his own late on.
N’Golo Kante for Jorginho (70 mins) – 7.Nice and tidy stuff from Kante bolstering the midfield and giving the Blues much more control.
Mason Mount for Kovacic (70 mins) – 6.
    Emerson Palmieri for Ziyech (80 mins) – N/A, Tammy Abraham (80 mins) – N/A.
