    THAT’S A WRAP
Thanks for joining us this evening, don’t worry…there’s plenty more football to keep you entertained this week!

    HE HAZN’T LOST HIS TOUCH
Eden Hazard bagged his first Champions League goal for Real Madrid this evening and was pleased that his side ground out a win.
Speaking after the game, the forward said: “The team performed really well to assure ourselves of three very important points.
“There are two group games left to win now and we need all the points we can get.
“Scoring was important to me but far more important was winning.
“I need more matches, more game time, to build my confidence and sharpness, but I did well tonight.”

    LEADING FROM THE BACK
Speaking after the game, Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane said: “It is clear that defensively we had to be good but the merit isn’t just the back line, it’s collective.
“Now it’s important only to think about the next game and continue like this all season.”

    OUT FOR THE CONTE
    A picture that speaks a thousand words…
Lukaku was taken off with a few minutes to spare; both he and his boss knew there was little that could be done to save the game.

    TABLE MANNERS
Tonight’s match was due to be a blockbuster hit, but after an underwhelming start to their Champions League campaigns, the two European heavyweights found themselves occupying the bottom spots.
Real Madrid’s win tonight propels them into second place, while Inter have a mountain to climb.

    REAL TALK
A sense of normality resumes in Group B as Real Madrid move away from the danger area.
But Inter Milan now find themselves in a precarious position.
The Spanish side looked far superior from the off and came out on top with 62 per cent possession.

Watch Arturo Vidal lose the plot as he picks up two yellow cards in TEN SECONDS during Inter Milan’s loss to Real Madrid

ARTURO VIDAL lost the plot against old foes Real Madrid – picking up two yellow cards in ten seconds as Inter fell to defeat.
The Italians came into the match knowing that defeat would put them on the brink of Champions League elimination at the group stage once again.

And former Barcelona man Vidal, 33, would have been even more up for it, knowing that he could get one over his old rivals.
But the Chilean’s desire to win boiled over and cost his team dearly.
Eden Hazard’s seventh minute penalty had given the Spanish champions the lead at San Siro.
But Vidal felt that he should have had a spot kick of his own 26 minutes later, when he burst into the penalty area before hitting the deck.

The midfielder was convinced Raphael Varane had brought him down unfairly as he lined up a shot.
But replays showed that the Frenchman had nicked the ball, before having his own foot kicked by Vidal.
Unmoved, referee Anthony Taylor decided to book Vidal for dissent.
And this caused the former Juventus and Bayern star to lose the plot completely, getting into Taylor’s face.

The English referee promptly booked Vidal again, for the second time in ten seconds, before pulling out the red and giving him his marching orders.
Shell-shocked, Vidal initially refused to leave the pitch, before finally being ushered off the field of play.
And the incident proved costly, as Inter failed to get back into the game.
Things got worse in the 59th minute, when Rodrygo doubled Zinedine Zidane’s side’s lead.
The defeat, coupled with Borussia Monchengladbach’s earlier 4-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, leaves Inter needing a miracle to qualify – as they sit five points behind second-placed Real Madrid with two games remaining.

Liverpool 0 Atalanta 2: Klopp’s men throw away chance to book spot in last 16 after conceding quickfire double

ALL the chopping and changing finally caught up with Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool delivered a sloppy, messy and lethargic performance against a team they hammered 5-0 three weeks earlier.

Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored twice inside four second-half minutes to seal a deserved triumph for the boys from Bergamo.
Although the Italians will have been surprised by such a dismal display by their hosts.
When you look at their impressive results since the 7-2 battering at Aston Villa — considering the bad luck Liverpool have suffered with injuries — they should be allowed the odd poor night.
Klopp’s patched up team set a record of 64 matches unbeaten at home in the top-flight with a 3-0 win over Leicester, their best performance of the season.

But their second worst display of the campaign – although not close to the shambles at Villa – means they still have a bit of work to do in the group.Losing one game is hardly a disaster and Liverpool will still go through.
Two years ago, Klopp’s team lost all three of their away games in the group stages yet the season did not end up too badly.
Yet they will still have to do better next week when Ajax come to Anfield and it would still be a shock if they are anywhere near as bad as last night, which proved to be their second home loss in three Champions League matches.
When you consider what has been thrown at Klopp, defying this run of seemingly never-ending injuries could only go on so long.

Ahead of the game, Klopp had just 16 outfield players at training and he was right to make the changes as this was also their second match in a manic 12-game spell over 41 days.
There were starts for Nico and Rhys Williams, summer signing Costas Tsimikas, Divock Origi and Mo Salah, who had been self isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.
None of the players covered themselves in glory but the whole team played badly.
After a poor first half, with just one notable attempt – from Atalanta – both managers, Klopp and Gian Piero Gasperino, looked slightly grumpy as they headed down the tunnel at the break.
And with little changing in the second half, Klopp was about to make his mass changes with the quartet of Andy Robertson, Fabinho, Diogo Jota and Bobby Firmino all standing on the touchline to be introduced.
Yet in a well-worked goal, Ilicic found too much space behind Tsimikas and he stuck out a leg to turn in a cross from Alejandro Gomez.
Yet no sooner had Klopp made his changes then Liverpool conceded agai, with Gosens smashing a volley past Alisson after Hans Hateboer beat Andy Robertson to a header.
Once again, the home defence was all over the place.
For Gosens, it was a Merseyside double as he also scored in Atalanta’s 5-2 win at Everton in the Europa League three years ago this week.

Despite finishing fourth last season and having reached the Champions League quarter-finals, Atalanta have not been as effective this – as they proved in their 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool in Bergamo at the start of the month.
It is worth remembering Atalanta’s wage bill last season was just £30million – the 13th highest in Serie A – and about £6m less than Nottingham Forest in the Championship.
But they still had too much for Klopp, who will now be hoping for a much better performance against Brighton on Saturday lunchtime, even though theGerman has the hump with the kick-off time.
But if there is a repeat performance – however unlikely – then Klopp could have a major problem.

Olympiacos 0 Man City 1: Watch Raheem Sterling’s outrageous backheel assist as Phil Foden goal seals last-16 spot

PHIL FODEN pushed his case for a regular start at Manchester City by scoring the goal which clinched a place in the knock-out stages.
The young midfielder – who shone for England last week – has been benched for the last four Premier League matches.

But with Kevin De Bruyne left back in Manchester to have a rest, Foden had the chance to take centre stage for City.
And his goal late in the first half ensured City will be in the last 16 of this competition for an eighth successive season.
Foden looked lively right from the start as his low shot from a tight angle was smartly saved by Jose Sa and another effort rolling inches wide.
Such was City’s total domination that the Greek side only touched the ball once in the opposition half in the opening 18 minutes.

The home keeper was having a busy night and he spread himself well to keep out Gabriel Jesus, who had latched onto Foden’s pass.
Pep Guardiola’s team have been uncharacteristically short of goals in the Premier League with just 10 coming from their first eight matches.
They were struggling to make the breakthrough here – but a little bit of magic from stand-in skipper Raheem Sterling helped them finally crack it.
Ilkay Gundogan shrugged off his marker before playing through Sterling whose delicious backheel was perfect for Foden.

The England youngster did not have to break his stride as he swept the ball past home keeper Sa.
City looked to ram home their advantage with Sterling curling in a 20 yard free-kick which Sa had to tip over the bar.
Guardiola’s men continued to completely control the game after the break but wasted a series of chances to finish the tie off.

Gundogan, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva all had opportunities but failed to finish off the Greek side – but their 15 match unbeaten run in the group stage as nevre really under threat.
Sergio Aguero – who was formerly married to Diego Maradona’s daughter Giannina – was brought on for the last 13 minutes.
He limped out of the draw at West Ham with a hamstring problem and his return will be a big boost for City in the weeks ahead.

Champions League and Europa League matches this week set for minute’s silence following Diego Maradona’s death aged 60

EUROPEAN football will stop to remember the genius of Diego Maradona for the next two nights after the death of the Argentine superstar at just 60.
Uefa chiefs ordered a minute’s silence from all players, officials and fans at tonight’s Champions League ties after the news from Buenos Aires broke.

And the gesture will be repeated ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League ties.
Uefa recognises the South American’s huge impact on European football during his spells with Barcelona and Napoli.
Maradona won the old Uefa Cup with Napoli in 1989, scoring a penalty in the first leg of the final against Stuttgart, helping the Italian side to a 5-4 aggregate victory.

He spent seven years in Serie A after two seasons in Catalonia, taking the Stadio San Paolo side to their only two domestic crowns in 1987 and 1990 after his then-world record £6.9m move.
Uefa chiefs believe it is only right that European football shows its respect for one of the greatest players in the history of the game.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Diego Maradona, one of world football’s greatest and most iconic figures.
“I was in touch recently to wish him well, and this news comes as a considerable shock to me.

“Diego Maradona achieved greatness as a wonderful player with a genius and charisma of his own.

“He was a hero in his native Argentina, with whom he enjoyed World Cup glory, and became an eternal idol for the supporters of Napoli, who will never forget the successes he brought to the club during his memorable spell in Italy.
“He will go down in history as someone who set football alight and thrilled fans young and old with his brilliance and skill. I have instructed UEFA to hold a minute’s silence in memory of Diego at this week’s matches.”
Meanwhile, Aurelio De Laurentiis, president of Maradona’s former club Napoli, has already suggested he will change the name of the San Paolo stadium to honour the two-time Serie A winner.

He said: “We can consider the idea of calling our stadium San Paolo-Diego Armando Maradona.”
As a further mark of respect, Napoli announced they would turn on the floodlights at the stadium which witnessed so many of Maradona’s feats to honour his memory and passing.
On its official Twitter feed, Naploi said Maradona would be “always in our hearts”.
The club added: “The world awaits our words but there are no words to describe the pain we’re going through. Now is the time to grieve.”
