How world looked last time Messi and Ronaldo missed out on Champions League quarter-finals with YouTube just launching

FOR the first time in 16 years, there will be no Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Ronaldo’s Juventus were dumped out on away goals by Porto on Tuesday night.

And his long-term rival Messi followed just 24 hours later as Barcelona could not mastermind another spectacular comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.
It could have been very different had his missed penalty been retaken on the stroke of half-time with replays showing Marco Verratti WAS encroaching.
But as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe light up European football, Messi and Ronaldo are left to lick their wounds.
One or both players have been involved in the last eight of the competition in each of the previous 15 seasons – going on to win it nine times between them in that period.

But their premature exits could be good news for Liverpool fans – it was in that 2004-05 campaign they famously lifted old Big Ears in Istanbul in unforgettable fashion.
At the time, Ronaldo was making a name for himself at Manchester United and a 17-year-old Messi scored his first senior Barca goal in the May of the campaign.
United crashed out to eventual finalists AC Milan while Barca squandered a first-leg lead to get stunned by Chelsea.
So, what was going in the world in 2005?

    YOUTUBE LAUNCHED
That’s right, the world’s biggest online video platform launched in February 2005, a week before the first legs of the last-16 ties.
Set up by three PayPal employees originally to get attractive women to share videos, they quickly changed tact to allow all kinds of clips.
It was revealed in May 2019 500 hours of content are uploaded to YouTube each minute with one billion hours being watched every single day.

    ROYAL WEDDING
With Messi and Ronaldo crashing out in 2021, there is plenty of talk about the royals… or ex-royals.
And 2005 was no different as the nation celebrated Charles and Camilla’s wedding in April.
The civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall was described as a ‘fairy tale for grown-ups’.

    YEAR IN FILM
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was 2005’s highest-grossing film as we thought that was the end of the franchise before its return a decade later.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Batman Begins and Madagascar also hit the big screens in a blockbuster year.
But it was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe that came in second in the box office charts.

    BRANGELINA
The year got off to a sad start as Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston confirmed their breakup and by March the latter had filed for divorce.
Pitt soon started dating Angelina Jolie and the pair were snapped together throughout the year.
It was not until January 2006 that they confirmed their relationship as Jolie revealed she was pregnant with Pitt’s child, daughter Shiloh Nouvel.

Lionel Messi’s missed penalty vs PSG SHOULD have been retaken as replays show Verratti ‘nearly on Barcelona star’s back’

LIONEL MESSI’S missed penalty should have been retaken as replays show Marco Verratti WAS encroaching.
Pundit Joe Cole went as far as to suggest the PSG player was ‘nearly on Messi’s back’.

“How have they not picked up that he’s encroaching there…””If you run the tape on, you see, he actually affects the game!”Joe Cole was in disbelief that Marco Verratti got away with encroachment during Lionel Messi’s vital penalty miss vs. PSG 😳 pic.twitter.com/v7L0K50OLd
    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) March 10, 2021

The Barcelona superstar, 33, had a glorious chance to put his side 2-1 up at Paris Saint-Germain on the stroke of half-time.
A goal at that point could have transformed the tie.
The Spanish giants would have needed just two more goals in the second half in Paris to level the tie at 8-8 and take it to extra-time.
But the Argentine saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Keylor Navas, who managed to deflect the ball on to the crossbar.

It then looped back into the middle of the penalty area where Verratti got up unchallenged to head it out for a corner.
Referee Anthony Taylor was told to wait for the corner to be taken while English officials Stuart Attwell and Paul Tierney reviewed the footage on VAR duty.
Somehow they concluded there was no problem – despite replays clearly proving the Italian midfielder was well inside the D at the moment Messi took the strike.

He’s nearly on Messi’s back! He’s so far inside.
    Joe ColeBT Sport pundit

BT Sport pundits Joe Cole and Owen Hargreaves picked up on the blunder.

Ex-Chelsea man Cole said: “We got back to VAR, I’m at pains to do it, but how have they not picked up that he’s [Verratti] encroaching there?
“He’s nearly on Messi’s back! He’s so far inside.
“If you run the tape on, you see, he actually affects the game when he clears it with the header.
“We want to get so pedantic about rules and laws and technology but the people looking at it can’t see that – I don’t understand where we are.
“I just can’t understand how you can make such a poor decision – it’s a massive moment.”

Kylian Mbappe put PSG in front on the night from the penalty spot after Taylor watched replays of Clement Lenglet’s accidental trip on Mauro Icardi.
He became the youngest player to score 25 Champions League goals and put his side 5-1 ahead on aggregate.
Messi equalised with a thunderbolt into the top corner but Barca struggled to break through Navas – in part down to Ousmane Dembele’s poor finishing – as it ended 1-1 on the night.
The result sent Barcelona crashing out and ensured neither Messi nor Ronaldo – whose Juventus side crashed out to Porto – would be in the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 2005.

    BONNE NUIT DE PARIS
And a good night for Paris.
PSG are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after standing up to a Barcelona onslaught at the Parc des Princes.
In truth, the home defence – marshalled superbly by Marquinhos – never looked troubled after Lionel Messi had a penalty saved in first half injury time by the equally-excellent Keylor Navas.
The spotkick stop meant that Messi was unable to add to his astonishing equaliser – a swerving blaster from 30 yards – and means the Argentine bows out before the Last Eight for the first time since 2007.
With his future at the Camp Nou still in doubt, has the Champions League seen the last of Messi in a Barcelona shirt?
PSG, on the other hand, go marching on, led by Kylian Mbappe, whose four goals over the two legs ensured their progress, and made the 22-year-old the youngest to ever reach 25 goals in the competition.
Can they go one step further than last season to win the tournament? Write them off at your peril.
That’s all from the French capital, but tune in on Friday week to discover who Mauricio Pochettino’s men will face in the next round.
    Goodbye.

    SUPER SAVER
With nine saves this evening, Keylor Navas recorded the most in a Champions League knockout game since Manuel Neuer in 2017.
And the German didn’t have to stop a Lionel Messi penalty.

    IN FOR THE KYL
The first player to score four goals against Barcelona in a two-legged Champions League tie, and the youngest ever player to hit 25 goals in the competition. No wonder Kylian Mbappe is feeling pleased with himself.

    THE KEY-LOR TO SUCCESS
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas produced a string of fine saves to deny Barcelona at the Parc des Princes this evening including a penalty stop from Lionel Messi.

I dedicate my penalty save to Sergio Rico, who is going through some difficult moments with his family.

    MESSI BOWS OUT
There will be no Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 seasons, and that means no Lionel Messi.

FT: PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
A fine match – and a brilliant tie – ends with PSG advancing into the Champions League quarter-finals. The Catalans performed extremely well at the Parc des Princes but couldn’t add to Lionel Messi’s sensational first half equaliser, especially after the Argentine had a penalty saved by Keylor Navas. PSG defended admirably, and have their reward for a superb first leg display at the Camp Nou.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE GOES!

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
90+2. Into the second of three added minutes, and finally Barcelona’s collective shoulders have dropped.
It’s not going to be Barca’s night. It’s not going to be Messi’s night.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    90. After soaking up so much pressure, PSG nearly cap the tie in what would have been fitting style.
Mbappe brings the ball the forward on the left, considers Icardi to his right but chooses to go it alone. He then skips past Lenglet with ease and weighs up Ter Stegen, only to crash a shot high and wide of the near post.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    89. Icardi goes into the book for pulling back De Jong.
The striker may have had more yellow cards in the second half than he has had touches.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    88. Griezmann attempts to whip one last cross into the feet of Messi, but it’s cut out by – who else? – Marquinhos.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    85. Barcelona register another attempt at goal, but Griezmann’s blast over from just outside the area is only going to eat up a few more seconds of time.
PSG are almost there. The demons of 2017 are close to be exorcised.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    84. Marco Verratti goes off and is replaced by Rafinha.
Who wants to sign my petition demanding the return to two substitutes, numbered 12 and 14?

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    82. The game is now being played almost entirely around the edge of the PSG penalty area.
Alba, Griezmann, Messi, Trincao and Moriba all have the opportunity to either shoot or cross, but instead go looking for the extra space in the hope of creating better.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    79. Three more changes for Barcelona bring the introduction of Miralem Pjanic, Martin Braithwaite, and – for his Champions League debut – 18-year-old Ilaix Moriba.
Off go Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    77. There’s a rare chance for PSG to break, but Mbappe’s pass in the intended direction of Icardo is well short of its target.
The hosts are yet to have a single touch in the Barcelona’s box in this second half.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    75. Now it’s Dembele, who is frustrated in his attempts to reach a cross fired across the six-yard box.
The hope is slowly draining from these Barcelona players.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    74. The PSG defence continue to do their job in numbers, first heading clear the free-kick swung into the box, and then blocking Trincao’s excellent follow-up volley.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    73. Messi wins a free-kick, five yards outside the box and towards the corner of the penalty area.
The Spanish side simply must score soon.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    71. Barcelona maintain the pressure, but Navas, Marquinhos and co. are holding firm

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    69. Busquets! Saved by Navas!
For the third time this evening, Sergio Busquets meets a Barcelona corner at the near post, and glanced a header towards goal.
It should be routine for Navas, but the keeper sees it later and has to react late in order to push it away.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    68. Last gasp defending again from the hosts.
Messi is lurking inside the area for a cross that fails to reach him thanks to, first, Danilo, and then Marquinhos.
The best Barca can muster is a corner.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    66. Another Barca substitution. On paper it looks an attacking one with a forward on for a defender, but Sergino Dest has been so advanced tonight that it’s unlikely to see much of a change in shape.
Francisco Trincao is on in his place.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    63. Anthony Taylor is on the receiving end of a blasted volley at close quarters, taking it full on the backside.
I’m glad there’s something we can laugh about tonight.

    THAT’S A WRAP
Thanks for joining us this evening.
Before you leave, don’t forget to check out our match report.

    ONE HAPPY CHAPPY
On his defensive set-up today, Klopp added: “I said to Fabinho, you clearly like this position more- you couldn’t show it any more clearly!
“The two centre-halves also had an incredible game- they all played well at the back, as that’s a tough ask against RB Leipzig.
“We defended deep together which is really important.
“The three midfielders worked well together, as did the three upfront.
“The boys who came on also had real impact, so it was good all round.

    KLOPP SPEAKS
Jurgen Klopp was thrilled with his team’s performance this evening.
Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “It was good, we created a lot of chances.
“The best thing that the boys did was that we defended very well so people couldn’t see how good Leipzig could be, because they can be a monster.”The team were outstanding; we have to cut off the PL stuff to get here and give it a proper try.
“The boys really enjoyed themselves tonight, but they had to do a lot of dirty work with some real defending.”

    DREAM DEBUT
Nat Phillips made his Champions League debut this evening, in fact he wasn’t even registered in the group stage.
Speaking about the youngster’s debut, Peter Crouch said: “He didn’t put a foot wrong. I understand where Rio’s coming from with regards to Liverpool losing the three first-choice centre backs, but tonight Nat didn’t do anything wrong.
“He headed it when it needed heading, his positional sense was very good, he did absolutely everything he needed to and cleared some very dangerous crosses.”

    SALAH SPEAKS
Speaking on BT Sport, Salah spoke of what impact today’s win could have on the squad’s mentality.
He said: “It’s a big result for us, we came here with the team not in the best palace after what’s happening in the Premier League.”We need to keep fighting, everyone can see that. As much as everyone is giving 100 per cent, we don’t need to be looking at the big picture, as we get too much pressure, we need to take it each game at a time.
“We need to leave the pressure off the field and just play football.”It’s been tough in the Premier League, everyone can see that. It’s part of the game, last few years we were winning and flying, but this year we’ve been unlucky with injuries.”

    STAT ATTACK
Liverpool only had two shots on target in the second half and scored from the both- the other five on target efforts all came in the first half.
Leipzig enjoyed slightly more possession, but didn’t threaten Liverpool much in the box.

    FOUND THEIR FEET
Former Liverpool man Peter Crouch was impressed with today’s defensive performance.
Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “Phillips and Kabak look like a good combination and Fabinho back in midfield makes Liverpool a much better team.”
While Rio Ferdinand was impressed with what he saw, he added: “If Van Dijk and Gomez aren’t there, for me they don’t win the Champions League.”

    FT: LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    91. Liverpool wasted chances in the first half, but have been much more clinical in the second half.
They’re cruising through to the quarter finals, but they know that winning the competition could be their only chance of a spot in the Champions League next season.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    90. Two additional minutes in Budapest.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    89. Tsimikas wastes no time in getting involved.
He receives the ball deep in Leipzig’s half and pulls the trigger from distance-it’s over the bar.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    87. Klopp knows they’re now cruising to the quarter finals so looks as though he’s ready to give Oxlade-Chamberlain a few minutes.
Tsimikas will be his other change.
Mane and Robertson make way for them.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
Phillips has been solid at the back this evening for Liverpool.
And it’s made a world of difference having Fabinho back in midfield.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    83. Salah isn’t content and has another crack.
Yet again, he cuts back in on his left foot as he tries to curl the ball in, but it’s tipped away by Gulacsi.
    Corner to Liverpool.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    82. Mane slips the ball to Origi on the left of the box.
He tries to open the angle up by pulling the ball back onto his right foot, but his shot ruffles the side netting.
Gulacsi was the right side of goal had the shot been the other side of the post anyway.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    81. Milner replaces Wijnaldum and takes over captain duties.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    How’s stat for Salah!

12 – Only Cristiano Ronaldo (13) has scored more knockout stage goals in the UEFA Champions League since Sadio Mané’s debut season in the competition in 2017-18 than the Senegalese International (12). Occasion. pic.twitter.com/b7UJvXQeha

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    78. Klopp is beaming from ear to ear and it’s little wonder.
There was a lot at stake tonight after Liverpool’s recent form, but the Champions League still provides them with a platform to show just how good they are.

    SALAH’S IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Liverpool finally found the target after 70minutes of trying.
Here’s Salah’s goal for your viewing pleasure.

    LIVERPOOL 2-0 RB LEIPZIG
    73. Two goals in four minutes for Liverpool, from the two-goal scorers from the first leg.
Substitutes Keita and Origi combine well on the right as the forward whips the ball into the centre of the box for Mane to run on to.
Mane calmly sends the ball home and sends Liverpool to the quarter finals.

    GOOOOOOAL
DEJA VU, JUST LIKE THE FIRST LEG, MANE FINDS THE BACK OF THE NET!

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 RB LEIPZIG
    72. Substitutions aplenty;
Liverpool bring on former Leipzig man Keita for Thiago.
As Jota is replaced by Origi.
Leipzig make their own change as Haidara replaces Olmo.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 RB LEIPZIG
    70. The front three combine well to finally get Liverpool’s first goal of the evening.
Mane slips the ball through to Jota in the central channel as he makes a decent run towards the box.
As Jota draws the defenders to him, he slips the ball to Salah on his right.
Salah pushes the ball back on his left to the centre of the box before firing the ball low and hard into the bottom right-hand corner.

    GOOOOAL
SALAH MAKES SURE LIVERPOOL GO THROUGH!

    LIVERPOOL 0-0 RB LEIPZIG
    67. Looks as though Origi will be Liverpool’s first change of the night.
Can he be the ‘super sub’ that Liverpool need in order to find the back of the net?!

Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 1 (agg: 3-1) Blues book Champions League last eight spot after Atletico miss penalty

CHELSEA sealed their Champions League quarter-final place after Atletico Madrid missed a THIRD penalty over the two-legged tie.
A Maren Mjelde spot-kick helped the Blues snatch a 1-1 draw and a 3-1 aggregate win – with England striker Toni Duggan smashing her penalty onto the crossbar.

But the Blues’ march to the competition’s next stage was overshadowed by a clash of heads that forced Beth England off in the first half.
And Blues boss Emma Hayes reckons her side may be feeling the effects of hard-fought victories against West Ham in the WSL and Atletico in Europe.
Hayes said: “I think my team were a bit leggy. I think the domestic league in England is so tough, so when you’re playing West Ham away it takes something out of the players.
“Plus, we played with ten players last Wednesday and completed some physical stats that for some players were season-highs, so it was going to take its toll.

“I’ve been in this competition enough to tell you that PSG away, Bayern Munich away, Lyon away – in my time as manager – they’ve all been really challenging games.
“I think we saw a truer reflection of Atletico today, I thought they played a good game.
“I’m really pleased to come through this knowing that we weren’t at our best.”
Atletico, beaten 2-0 in the first leg, went on the attack in the opening stages with Silvia Meseguer forcing Mjelde to charge down her sixth-minute strike.

And the visitors hit back moments later with Pernille Harder rifling a shot wide of Hedvig Lindahl’s post.
The WSL champs seemed content to allow their LaLiga Women’s opponents to dominate possession.
And the Spanish club had a chance to take the lead shortly before the half-hour mark with Deyna Castellanos’ shot dipping over Chelsea’s bar.
Ann-Katrin Berger was forced to pull off a diving save with Toni Duggan unleashing a late first half shot destined for her bottom right corner.
The second period saw a couple of dramatic moments with Atletico yelling for – but failing to get – a spot-kick following Niamh Charles’ challenge on Ludmila.
And the Blues starlet later received a yellow card for a handball with referee Stephanie Frappert pointing to the spot in the 73rd minute.
But Atletico were unable to capitalise with Duggan’s strike bouncing off the bar and out of danger.
And moments later a pen for the Blues minutes saw Mjelde score her second goal of the round 16 encounter.

Uefa have confirmed that Germany’s Covid restrictions mean the Bundesliga club are unable to travel to the UK without having to quarantine on their return.
It means both teams will again fly to the Hungarian capital Budapest to play in the Puskas Arena for the game on Tuesday.
City lead 2-0 from the ‘away’ leg two weeks ago.
Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus bagged the goals to leave City with one foot in the quarters.

Meanwhile, Liverpool beat Germans RB Leipzig by the same scoreline in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
And the Reds will be looking to secure their quarter-final place in tonight’s second clash.
The other tie tonight sees Barcelona looking to fight back from a 4-1 first-leg defeat to Kylian Mbappe’s Paris Saint-Germain.
Already through to the next stage are Borussia Dortmund and Porto.

Juventus’ awful Euro record since Ronaldo arrived with star scoring more in last Real Madrid season than three in Italy

CRISTIANO RONALDO is Juventus’ unlucky charm in the Champions League.
Juve crashed out at the last 16 stage of this year’s tournament on away goals after a 3-2 win over Porto left the tie level at 4-4 on aggregate on Tuesday.

It means the Old Lady have failed to make it past the quarter final stage in Europe in each of the three years since Ronaldo joined the ranks in 2018.
The Portuguese superstar, 35, arrived in Turin in a £99million deal from Real Madrid, chasing more Champions League crowns.
Juventus were doing well before he donned the famous black and white shirt – reaching the final twice in four years before the landmark signing.
Ronaldo’s brace had helped Madrid beat Juve 4-1 in the 2017 final and the Serie A champs went down to Barcelona 3-1 two years previously.

Ronaldo won Europe’s premier competition four times in nine years at the Bernabeu but has been unable to replicate his success with the Italian giants.
In fact, the Manchester United hero has scored fewer goals in the Champions League in three seasons at Juve than he managed in his final year as a Galactico.
He has bagged four goals in Europe in the last two years and netted six times in his first campaign as a Bianconeri player.
That total of 14 is still short of the 15 he slammed home in the 2017-18 season with Madrid.

Manager Andrea Pirlo only pockets £1.6million-per-year after taking charge of the club

He finished that campaign as a Champions League winner after Real beat Liverpool 3-1 thanks to two goals from super sub Gareth Bale in the final.
Ronaldo finished as top scorer – five clear of nearest challengers and Anfield trio Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
Juve’s early exit at the hands of Porto has thrust the club into crisis with the Italian press slamming Ronaldo’s ‘betrayal’ of the team.
The former Sporting Lisbon ace was nowhere near his best on the night and appeared to be the flimsiest component of the wall that collapsed as he turned his back to allow Porto’s crucial late goal.
Fabio Capello slammed Ronaldo’s blunder as ‘unforgivable’ and his future at the club is now up in the air with finances pushed to the limit.

EFL chief Rick Parry warns Uefa new Champions League format could decimate English football

EFL chairman Rick Parry has warned Uefa its Champions League expansion plans risk decimating the fabric of English football.
European chiefs are set to confirm the new plans to come into effect from 2024 after getting the backing of Europe’s biggest clubs.

But Parry, who was supported by Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish, suggested the planned extra 100 Champions League games per season would destroy the League Cup and be potentially fatal for some of English football’s most historic clubs.
Parry told the European League’s Club Advisory Platform virtual meeting: “The 72 clubs in the EFL are at the heart of their communities
“The League Cup has been in existence for 60 years and is owned and managed by the EFL.
“One of the conditions on the formation of the Premier League was that all clubs would play in it.

“But Uefa proposal poses a major threat to the League Cup, especially with regard to the teams in the Champions League – and it will have a massive effect on EFL revenues
“We estimate we could lose one third of the revenues we distribute to our clubs – which could pose a very real threat to the existence of those clubs.”
Parry was echoed by Selhurst chief Parish, who added: “This would have a devastating effect on domestic competitions in England.
“The League Cup is the largest financial contributor to the EFL and this will be the end of that Cup in its entirety or reduce it to a youth competition.”

Clubs like us feel so remote from the decision-making and there is a huge conflict of interest.
    Steve ParishCrystal Palace chairman

Uefa have reached agreement with Europe’s biggest clubs that there will be no weekend games in its club competitions, leaving the field clear for domestic leagues.
The deal effectively kills off the planned European Super League, despite efforts led by Real Madrid to breathe life into the dying embers of the breakaway plan.
But Prem clubs want to thwart the proposal to play two of the 10 games in the initial league phase of the 36-team Champions League “Swiss model” competition in January.
Uefa will formally announce the new format next month but Parish also blasted Nyon chiefs and the influential European Club Association for ignoring the voices of those left out of the elite group.
He said: “Clubs like us feel so remote from the decision-making and there is a huge conflict of interest, with Uefa and the ECA now choosing to make changes for the long term in the middle of a pandemic.
“We are expected to accept them because they’re not as bad as they could have been.
“But there will be a huge impact on us and the creep is never ending.“
Parish and Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow also condemned the proposal, backed by the Prem’s ‘Big Six’, for a backdoor safety net to be available for two clubs to qualify for the Champions League through their Uefa coefficient score.

The Palace chief said: “If we took it on last season, Leicester were fifth but the two clubs below them [Spurs and Arsenal] would have qualified for the Champions League based on an arbitrary period of success in Europe.”
Purslow added: “It affects domestic competitions if you boost teams from the Europa League to the Champions League based on what they did in the past.
“That would give clubs in the Premier League a £45m advantage over a team that may have finished ahead of them. Most people would see that as unfair and not right.”
