Champions League and Europa League venue changes: Liverpool in Budapest, Arsenal in Rome, Man Utd in Turin

EUROPEAN football is back with the knockout stages, but for a number of English teams it will look very different.
Despite ties continuing to take place over the traditional two-leg format, some teams will be forced to forfeit home advantage due to Covid restrictions.

Which Champions League ties will have venue changes?

RB Leipzig vs Liverpool – Puskas Arena, Budapest

RB Leipzig are unable to host Liverpool in their home stadium as entry to Germany from the UK has been banned for all non-residents.
Jurgen Klopp himself was unable to return to the country to attend his mother’s funeral under the entry rules.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Man City – Puskas Arena, Budapest
For the same reason as RB Leipzig’s game against Liverpool, Borussia Monchengladbach vs Man City will be unable to go ahead as planned.
Therefore Budapest has stepped in to host both matches.

Atletico Madrid vs Chelsea – National Arena, Bucharest
Entry to Spain from the UK has been banned for all non-residents.
Therefore this match has been moved to Bucharest.
Atletico Madrid will have fond memories of the National Stadium as Diego Simeone won his first trophy – the 2012 Europa League – there.

Benfica vs Arsenal – Stadio Olimpico, Rome
The UK bans all non-residents from entering the country from Portugal.

Were Arsenal to play Benfica in Lisbon, the entire squad would be forced to undergo a ten-day hotel quarantine on return.
Therefore, the match has been moved to Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.
Real Sociedad vs Man Utd – Juventus Stadium, Turin
Due to the Spanish government’s travel restrictions, Real Sociedad will host Man Utd at Juventus’ stadium in Turin.

Wolfsberg vs Tottenham – Puskas Arena, Budapest
Like Liverpool and Man City, Tottenham will also play the away leg of their European tie at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
This is because all non-EU/EEA citizens except residents are banned from travelling to Austria from the UK.
Molde vs Hoffenheim – Estadio de la Ceramica, Villarreal
Despite stadiums in Spain not being allowed to host British clubs, Villarreal have been given permission to stage Molde vs Hoffenheim.
The game has been moved as Norway has closed its borders to all non-resident foreign nationals.
    Arsenal vs Benfica
The Benfica team are currently banned from travelling to the UK, along with all non-residents entering from Portugal.
Arsenal had announced that Olympiacos’ Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens would host the match.
However this post was later removed from their website and social media accounts.

What happens if a home team can’t move its tie to a neutral venue?
Where travel restrictions are imposed by the home team’s government, the club must find a new venue or be deemed to have forfeited the match 3-0.
Where travel restrictions are imposed by the away team’s government, that club will be asked to find a new venue or have Uefa choose one for them.
Do away goals still count double?
Uefa have confirmed that away goals WILL count double in all European ties this year.
That means, for example, that the rule will apply even if Benfica host Arsenal in Italy and Arsenal host Benfica in Greece. More

Chelsea to face Atletico Madrid and Man City take on Fiorentina in Women’s Champions League last 16

CHELSEA are to face Atletico Madrid and ex-Man City ace Toni Duggan in the last 16 of the Women’s Champions League.
And Manchester City will go up against Fiorentina who finished runners-up to Juventus in the race for last term’s Serie A title.

The WSL giants, who are the only British sides left in the competition, will play both legs of their ties in March following the last 16 draw.
And their first leg encounters will take place on home turf on Wednesday 3 March and Thursday 4 March with the second legs set for March 10 and 11.
Emma Hayes and her Blues, who reached the contest semis in 2018 and 2019, are eager to go one better this term.
They face an Atletico side who picked up their first domestic trophy of the season when they beat Levante 3-0 in the Super Cup final in January.

However, the club are ten points behind league leaders Barcelona in the battle for this season’s LaLiga Women’s crown, with their rivals carrying four games in hand.
And Atletico, who are fourth in their division, are currently one place below the top three qualifying spots for next term’s Champions League.
Elsewhere Gareth Taylor’s Manchester City will take on a Fiorentina outfit lying fourth in Italy’s top tier having lost four and drawn two of their last 13 games.
The Italian club were dispatched by Arsenal in the last 32 of Europe’s top football club competition last term losing 6-0 on aggregate.

And they finished second in Serie A last season.
The clash between the teams could see ex-Gunners centre-back Louise Quinn go head-to-head with City goal machine Ellen White.

The Republic of Ireland international made 59 appearances for Arsenal during her three-year spell at the club from 2017 to 2020.
Man City – like Chelsea – are two-time Champions League semi-finalists reaching this stage of the tournament in 2017 and 2018.
And they were defeated on both occasions by Lyon who have won the competition a record-breaking SEVEN times.

Watch Barcelona fans set off fireworks by PSG hotel to try and stop players sleeping before CL clash

BARCELONA fans are setting off fireworks outside PSG’s team hotel, in an attempt to prevent the French side’s stars from sleeping.
The relationship between the two sides has been strained at best, since Barcelona’s stunning 6-1 Champions League victory over the Parisians, followed by the subsequent £200million Neymar deal.

But things have reached breaking point this season, given PSG’s very public pursuit of Lionel Messi.
Speculation over the Argentine’s future has loomed large over Barcelona’s season.
But with PSG in town, their fans wanted to cause some disruption of their own.
In video footage captured by El Chiringuito, large cracks can be heard reverberating through the Catalonia sky, just by where PSG happen to be staying.

This follows the less than hospitable welcome that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi received upon his arrival earlier today.
In more footage, fans can be heard shouting: “Son of a b***h! Thief! Let go of Messi, thief!”
PSG have not been shy of expressing their interest in the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, with Mauricio Pochettino, Neymar and Angel Di Maria having all made admiring noises – while France Football mocked up a front page image of Messi in a PSG shirt.
This led to Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman furiously criticising the ‘disrespectful’ French giants.

He said: “It’s wrong to say such things, especially because it heats up our Champions League match even more.
“I think it’s not fair and it’s disrespectful to talk so much about one player who is still playing for Barcelona.
“I think it is disrespectful to talk so much about Leo while he is playing for Barcelona, especially before a Champions League match against them.”
To this, Pochettino hit back: “At no time have we shown disrespect.
“Players can talk, say what they think about other players. We have total respect for clubs. Do not mistake France Football for PSG.”
The teams can finally take their verbal jousting to the pitch tomorrow night at Camp Nou, before returning to Paris for the second leg in three weeks time.

New Premier League and Champions League balls revealed with nostalgic Nike Total 90 look and adidas’ hidden message

NEW Champions League and Premier League balls have been released for the conclusion of the 2020-21 season.
And the designs include a nostalgic Nike Total 90 look and a hidden message from adidas.

adidas revealed the new ball which will be used for the remainder of the Champions League campaignCredit: Will Cornelius; Adidas

Nike added a third ball to their Premier League collection for the 2020-21 season

The German manufacturers unveiled the ball which will be used in the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.
The Finale Istanbul 21 – named after the host city of May’s final – celebrates the 20th anniversary of the iconic ‘starball’ design, synonymous with memorable big European nights over the years.
The new adidas ball subtly features every design from the last 20 Champions League finals.
And the year and city of each final is written in a thin red strip on the corresponding panel.

The designers – who brought out their latest Predator Freak boots last month – said of the new ball: “The ball continues to offer control, aerobatic stability and a secure grip via thermally-bonded hexagon panels, overlapping stars and textured coating.
“Incorporating sustainable glue, the ball provides a seamless surface and improved first touch for even more precision on the pitch.”
The football will be available to buy on the adidas website from 9am on Tuesday and then used that night when RB Leipzig take on Liverpool and Barcelona host Neymar-less Paris Saint-Germain.
    NIKE TAKES FLIGHT
As for fellow sporting giants Nike, they have teamed up with the Premier League to add a third ball for this season.

So rather than the same white ball used either side of the winter yellow one, a new style will come in from this weekend – just like last year.
The latest Nike Flight football features the old-school Total 90 ring famously used between 2004 and 2006.
FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN SIGN UP OFFERS HERE

It also incorporates Nike’s AerowSculpt technology, used in the two previous models this term with 634 goals scored so far – 17 of those from Mo Salah.
According to the Premier League, it ‘carries a bespoke graphic designed to reflect the intensity of the final stages of the Premier League, when the focus of the teams and players narrows and the Premier League trophy is in sight’.
Fans will get their first glimpse of the new Flight football on Friday night when Wolves host Leeds.
The ball will be available to purchase from February 18 at nike.com.
