Liverpool 3 AC Milan 2: Henderson’s brilliant volley seals another Reds comeback vs Italians in Anfield thriller

IT might not quite have been the Miracle of Istanbul but this belting opener in the Champions League Group of Death served up two comebacks for the price of one. Jordan Henderson hammered a brilliant winner as Liverpool overturned a half-time deficit, having themselves been stunned by a two-goal blast from Milan shortly before the break.

Jurgen Klopp promised that this group – which also includes Spanish champions Atletico Madrid and former European kings Porto – would provide excitement ‘from the first minute to the last’.
And the German wasn’t wrong – as he rested three key players and almost paid for his arrogance.
This was once-mighty Milan’s first Champions League appearance in seven years – and their first ever visit to Anfield.
And while there had been much pre-match talk of Liverpool’s epic comeback from 3-0 down to defeat Milan in the 2005 final, few would have expected a match as frenetic as this.
Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the Reds in front and Mo Salah had a penalty saved before Milan turned the encounter on its head with strikes from Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz.
But Salah netted an equaliser before Henderson’s peach and Liverpool had overcome their meltdown to secure a deserved win.

Both of these clubs, with 13 European Cups between them, had been part of the hated breakaway Super League scheme which was swiftly quashed last spring.
They ought to have known better, as the existing Champions League format rarely disappoints in the knock-out stage – and it can be tasty in the group phase too when there is a group served up like this one.
Klopp made the shock decision to bench Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara, with Joe Gomez and Divock Origi both handed their first starts of the season.
But it didn’t seem to matter as Liverpool started like the clappers, with textbook manic workrate and their rampaging full-backs setting the tempo.
First Andy Robertson motored down the left and flashed in a cross which Origi sliced wide.
Then from a Roberton cut-back, Diogo Jota’s shot was deflected wide.

But the breakthrough came down the right, from Alexander-Arnold – mistrusted by England boss Gareth Southgate but cherished by Klopp.
The Scouser played a neat give-and-go with Salah, snuck in behind his man and saw a shot deflect off Fikayo Tomori and inside the far post for a ninth-minute opener.
The relentless pace continued, Milan being pinned back and battered.
Soon Liverpool had a penalty, Robertson’s cross striking the raised arm of Ismael Bennager.
But Salah, making his 100th Anfield appearance for Liverpool, showed a rare glimpse of mortality.
He fired his penalty too close to keeper Mike Maignan, who made an excellent double save, also pushing away Jota’s header from the rebound.

Maignan was at it again, tipping over a half-volley from Salah. Milan had lost their superstar keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to Paris St Germain in the summer but his replacement was keeping them in the match.
Liverpool’s shock-and-awe tactics has started to subside but Milan had barely threatened before their stunning double-strike late in the first half.
The first was a sweet passing move which ended with Franck Kessie feeding Rebic, who lashed home in front of a travelling support in the Anfield Road end who looked as shocked as they were delighted.
If that wasn’t chastening enough for Klopp’s men were ahead less than two minutes later.
This time, Kessie made a surging run, Rebic squared and an Alexis Saelemaekers shot was cleared off the line by Robertson, only for Diaz to react quickest and gleefully tap home.

With The Kop temporarily stunned into silence, the Reds retreated to their dressing room wondering how on Earth they were behind at the break.
It might have been even worse straight after the interval when Saelemaekers netted from a short corner only to be ruled out for offside.
Stung by all this mayhem, Liverpool swiftly equalised, Origi with a dinked through-ball and Salah steering home to finally beat Maignan.
It was all Liverpool again now, Milan defending desperately, and Jota’s shot deflected over.
From the resulting Alexander-Arnold corner a header was cleared to Henderson who drilled into the corner of the net on the half-volley with great technique and serious venom.

It was the skipper’s first Champions League goal in seven years and it was a critical one, in a match where dropped home points could well have proved very costly.
Milan sent on Olivier Giroud, who had his menacing moments, but Klopp’s men continued to make most of the running.
They had missed their European nights in front of full houses at Anfield over the past 18 months – and this had been a vintage one.

How many subs can teams make in Champions League this season?

As such, rotating players and using subs wisely in this year’s competition could be crucial later on in the tournament.
How many subs can teams make in the Champions League?
You may remember that during the pandemic certain rules were changed to accommodate the unprecedented situation.
This included the use of up to SIX substitutes during Champions League matches.
And this rule – for the most part – is here to stay this season.
In the 2021/22 Champions League, teams during the group stages are allowed to make five substitutions per game.
Should they make it through to the knockouts, they can make five in the 90 minutes and then an extra sixth sub in extra-time if the tie requires.
This season clubs will be able to make five subs during group gamesCredit: Reuters

Uefa’s rulebook states: “Up to five of the substitutes listed on each team’s match sheet may take part in the match.
“Exceptionally, a sixth substitute listed on the match sheet may take part in knockout matches exclusively during extra time.
“Each team may use a maximum of three stoppages in play to make substitutions (one additional stoppage in extra-time can be used).
“Substitutions made before the start of the match, during half-time, between the end of normal playing time and extra time, and at half-time during extra time do not reduce the number of stoppages in play that can be used.
“A player who has been substituted may take no further part in the match”.

Which TV channel and live stream is the Champions League on this season?
It can sometimes be tricky keeping up with which company has the TV rights to show football in the UK.
BT Sport have once again bagged the rights to broadcast Champions League, Europa League and Conference League football on these shores.
Every single match of the competition will be shown on the platform, with streaming available on your mobile, tablet and PC via the BT Sport app.
And EE phone customers can watch the entire group stage for FREE.
If you have a contract with the mobile giants, you’re eligible for three months free of BT Sport mobile. More

Apologetic Cristiano Ronaldo KOs steward with shot during Man Utd warm-up against Young Boys before giving her his shirt

CRISTIANO RONALDO accidentally KO’d a match steward while warming up for Manchester United’s defeat at Young Boys. The Portugal star misfired a ball wide of the goal as he limbered up for the Champions League group stage game.

And Ronaldo instead hit an innocent steward standing on the sideline.
The fierce impact of the ball saw the person crash straight to the ground.
People around quickly looked to make sure the steward was OK.
And Ronaldo himself immediately went over to check in on the prone person.
After knowing the steward was well, Ronaldo ran back onto the pitch to continue his warm-up.
And he cheered the steward up after the final whistle by giving her his jersey.

But the incident didn’t put Ronnie off his stride, as he opened the scoring in Switzerland after just 13 minutes following a sumptuous assist from Bruno Fernandes.
It was Ronaldo’s third goal in just two games for his ‘new’ club.
The legendary forward scored twice on his second debut in United’s 4-1 win against Newcastle on Saturday.
But United fell apart as they went down to ten men before conceding a last-gasp winnner.
Ronnie also moved level with Iker Casillas tonight for the most Champions League appearances in history.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross deflected off Chelsea old-boy Fikayo Tomori and wrong-footed keeper Mike Maignan to give Liverpool a tenth minute lead.
And five minutes later Andy Robertson’s vicious goal bound effort struck Ismaël Bennacer on the arm and the ref pointed to the spot.
Salah stepped up in front of the Kop and went for power over placement.
Maignan dived to his right and the pen cannoned off him and away before he was up to keep the rebound out with an excellent double save.
Salah’s last miss was against Huddersfield on 28 October 2017.
He has taken 17 spot kicks since then with the latest being the Milan miss.

That gives him an 88.8 per cent success rate from the spot at Liverpool.
The Reds continued to keep their Italian opponents under pressure at Anfield but things went from bad to worse before half-time.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were stunned as Milan struck a quickfire double to send them in 2-1 up at the break.
Ante Rebic struck with three minutes to go to half-time – slotting one past Alisson and into the bottom right corner.
And a stunned Liverpool were sucker-punched again on 44 minutes as they were hit on the break and Brahiam Diaz swept home from close range after Roberston blocked a goal bound shot on the line.
Salah made amends for his miss just three minutes into the second-half when he got on the end of Fabinho’s clever through pass to stab home and make it 2-2.
And Jordan Henderson saved his star team-mate’s blushes with a ferocious half-volley on 69 minutes that made it 3-2.
And neither team scored again before the final whistle – with the result putting the Reds top of Group B.

Peter Schmeichel slams Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘strange’ tactics during Man Utd loss at Young Boys and questions subs

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Peter Schmeichel has blasted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ‘strange tactics’ during their embarrassing Champions League defeat to Young Boys. The Red Devils started their campaign with a loss after Jesse Lingard’s misplaced back pass teed up Jordan Siebatcheu for a 95th-minute winner for the Swedish minnows.
Jesse Lingard’s blunder handed Young Boys a 2-1 victoryCredit: EPA
Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead before Aarron Wan-Bissaka’s red card forced Solskjaer into making several negative tactical changes.
But the Old Trafford boss came out after the game and blamed the referee and Young Boys’ artificial pitch for the defeat.
And former United keeper Schmeichel said: “’We can always question team selection, I just think when your next game is Sunday at West Ham, first game in the Champions League – why don’t you play your best team, your best players?
“Regardless of astroturf, whatever excuses you come up with, get that win there.
“I think when you look at Mason Greenwood, he’s in great form, he’s a young man, he creates chances and not only does he score he creates chances for others.”
After taking off Jadon Sancho for Diego Dalot in the first half, the United boss replaced Donny van De Beek with Raphael Varane at half-time.

He then hauled off talisman Bruno Fernandes for Nemanja Matic before raising eyebrows by switching Ronaldo for Lingard up top.
And Schmeichel told CBS Sports: “Varane has just come to the club but I would’ve loved to see those two playing.
“We as fans want Ronaldo to be on the pitch, regardless of if they’re down to 10 men, if he gets the ball he can make something happen.
“They were hoping for a very long time to have that kind of player and he put somebody that he sent out on loan [Lingard].
“He’s a player he tried to sell, tried to loan out, and he replaced him with Ronaldo, I just find it strange.
“‘Regardless of astroturf, whatever excuses you come up with, get that win on there.”

Solskjaer’s final sub saw Anthony Martial come on for Fred, which saw Lingard drop back into midfield before making his blunder.
And Schmeichel added: “But to get a result in-house, it’s 1-1, he puts Martial on, we talked about that, that was really weird because Martial doesn’t defend well.
“He doesn’t work hard, he’s a goalscorer but we’re down to 10 men, we don’t expect to create many chances, so why put Martial on?”

GOAL MACHINE Robert Lewandowski wants to stay firing at the top level for at least four more years. The 33-year-old striker scored in his EIGHTEENTH consecutive game last night after bagging a brace in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Lewandowski was linked with a move to the Premier League this summer after it was reported he wanted a new challenge.
And the Polish hitman has revealed he has no plans to retire anytime soon as strives to stay as one of the world’s best strikers.
He told German paper Bild: “I’m in good shape physically and have the right mentality.
“I can play for many more years, I’m sure at least four more years.
“And then I will see, maybe I can raise the bar even higher.

“And it’s not just about fitness. After a four-week break, I had a better base before preparation than ever before.

Lewandowski follows a strict diet programme and has already scored 10 goals for club and country this season.
His wife Anna is the mastermind of his nutrition which sees him eat his courses backwards.

And the striker’s potent form has led Bayern to attempt to try and keep him beyond his current deal which has two years remaining.
Club chairman Herbert Hainer, 67, said: “We’re happy with Robert. But we don’t have to extend the contract now, we still have two years.
“As I said, I can imagine Robert staying beyond 2023. We’re in permanent talks with all our players, including Lewy. But now is still early.”

Man Utd should not panic and sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer… even Sir Alex Ferguson had his Swiss Champions League blips

AS OLE Gunnar Solskjaer said himself: At Manchester United, you are judged game to game.On Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo returned and the Red Devils beat Newcastle United 4-1.
United should stick by Solskjaer and block out the critics calling for him to be sacked after the club’s European loss to Young BoysCredit: Rex
The plan Ole set in motion on succeeding Jose Mourinho as boss was now coming together.
Fast forward to Tuesday and a 2-1 defeat away to Young Boys in Bern and suddenly he is no longer the man for the job.
Jason Cundy set the ball rolling on talkSPORT, saying United should sack the Norwegian.
    What absolute rot.
It was only down the road against Basel in December 2011 that Sir Alex Ferguson succumbed to defeat at the group stage and fell into the Europa League.
United had also drawn 3-3 at home to the Swiss side in September.

FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN NEW CUSTOMER DEALS

It can happen — and did, even during Fergie’s reign.
There is no doubt that if United fail to get out of Group F on the back of a super summer of signings, then Solskjaer will be under pressure — and rightly so.
But we are not there yet.
Tuesday night’s defeat came partly due to things beyond Solskjaer’s control.
He could not legislate for Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s clumsy red card.
There has to be an argument for him to be dropped in favour of Diogo Dalot.
Wan-Bissaka can tackle but when it comes to controlling and crossing the ball, we could all have a go and maybe do better.
Then there was the penalty claim that was turned down when Ronaldo was barged off the ball.
Then Jesse Lingard has a brain freeze and the game is gone.
As Ole’s captain Harry Maguire said: “Discipline is a huge part of tournament football.
“If this was a knockout game and we go out of the competition because we go down to ten men, I am sure everyone will be kicking themselves.
“It’s fortunate that it is the first game of the group and we have loads of time to bounce back from it.
    QUESTIONABLE LATE DECISIONS
“In terms of Jesse, obviously no footballer likes making mistakes but it’s part and parcel of the game.
“We’re humans, every footballer makes mistakes, we’ll learn from it, he’ll learn from it.”
You can, however, question Solskjaer on the substitutions that helped hand an already-growing initiative to Young Boys.
Taking off Ronaldo with 18 minutes of normal time left signalled that Solskjaer thought the game was gone and it was time to mount a rearguard action.
But to then send on Anthony Martial in the 89th minute for defensive midfielder Fred, was mind boggling.
So the manager is not beyond reproach and this was his seventh defeat in 11 games in the Champions League.
He has a team and a squad that can challenge for the title and the highest honour in club football.
He has lost a game but the season is hardly gone.
From a third-place finish to second and now top of the Premier League, the progression under Solskjaer is there for all to see.
There is no way the blueprint laid down for success is going to be ripped up on the back of one defeat.
To watch United now compared to under Louis van Gaal and Mourinho is to see two different teams, two different clubs even, given the feeling around the Theatre of Dreams at the weekend.
Ole will make mistakes — even the great Van Gaal threw Nick Powell on up front to retrieve a bad situation when losing 3-2 to Wolfsburg in December 2015.
UNITED ARE STILL IN BEST POSITION TO WIN SILVERWARE
United failed to get past the group stage that time, too.
Last season, after winning three of their first four group games, United dropped into the little loved Europa League again.
Solskjaer, you would hope, will have learned from the mistakes of that campaign, not least in the 2-1 defeat away to Turkey’s Basaksehir.
The memories of the ill discipline of that night came flooding back in Bern — and that needs to be eradicated quickly.
One thing Solskjaer could do with emphasising to the players is an appreciation of the away support.
Only four or five players, plus the manager, went to the corner of the ground where they were congregated to clap their efforts.
Yes, the players were dejected but as one fan pointed out to me, so were they.
And they were the ones who had to queue for two hours in Manchester airport to get a flight and pay for all the Covid protocols.

That was before the rather overenthusiastic tester at the EXPO building in Bern stuck a pipe cleaner so far up your nose it almost came out your ear.
    So not a great experience.
But it’s game one, United are top of the league, breathe.
