Champions League away goal rules: Are away goals used and when are extra time and penalties played?

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE knockout stages are in full flow as we discover the teams that will make it to the quarter-finals.
But how do away goals work in the competition?

Do away goals count in extra time of Champions League and Europa League matches?
AS ever, away goals count if the game finishes a draw on aggregate after 90 minutes.
Uefa were considering changing the rule but for now it will remain the same.
So extra time can only happen if the same reverse scoreline appears in both games and the two teams have the same amount of away goals.
Here’s the Uefa guidelines on what happens next: “For matches played under the knockout system, if the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage.

“If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e. if both teams score the same number of goals at home and away, two 15-minute periods of extra time are played at the end of the second leg.
“If both teams score the same number of goals during extra time, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting team qualifies).
“If no goals are scored during extra time, kicks from the penalty mark determine which team qualifies for the next stage.”
So if we reach extra time and EITHER team scores within the added 30 minutes, there is NO chance of the game going to penalties.

If the away team manages to score in extra time, away goals kick in and the home side must net twice to progress.
However, this year away goals will only count up to the round of 16, as the quarter-finals to finals will be played over a single leg due to the coronavirus pandemic. More

Juventus 2 Lyon 1 (Agg 2-2) Man Utd flop Memphis Depay scores Panenka as Juve crash out despite Cristiano Ronaldo double

CRISTIANO RONALDO was helpless as Memphis Depay scored an outrageous Panenka penalty to send Juventus crashing out of the Champions League.
The Portuguese superstar scored a double as he single-handedly tried to drag the lacklustre Italian champions into the quarter-finals.
But it proved too great a task after Depay’s early spot-kick, and away goal, had left Maurizio Sarri’s side needing three.
Former Manchester United flop Depay, 26, was a man lacking confidence during his two years at Old Trafford.

But he showed bags of it as he cheekily sat Wojciech Szczesny down to chip his penalty down the middle.
Lyon were gifted the perfect start when German referee Felix Zwayer awarded a penalty for Federico Bernardeschi sliding tackle on Houssem Aouar after ten minutes.

The Italians were livid, with Bernardeschi appearing to get a large chuck of the ball, but VAR did not intervene.
Captain Depay stepped up with a short run up… and dinked it.
That made sure he maintained his 100 per cent goalscoring record in Europe’s elite club competition this season.
After netting in all five of his previous appearances in the competition, Depay joined Ruud van Nistelrooy as the second Dutchman to score in six consecutive Champions League games.

With Lyon going into the second leg with a 1-0 advantage from way back in February, the goal made it 2-0 on aggregate.
Juventus therefore needed to score three in order to go through.
The Old Lady were given an almighty lifeline when the referee levelled things up just before half-time.
Depay tried – and succeeded – to keep his arm tucked in as Miralem Pjanic struck a free-kick… but the referee pointed to the spot and Ronaldo, or course, made no mistake.

Then on the hour mark Ronaldo banged in his second to level the tie, belting in a stunning strike with his left peg which was simply too quick for Anthony Lopes.
But Juventus needed a third to go through due to the away-goals rule.
And they could not find it as Ronaldo wasted the best chance of all, failing to keep his header down as Juventus’ – and Gianluigi Buffon’s – long wait for European glory goes on.

Reports in Spain say the relationship between Bale and Zinedine Zidane is ‘ completely broken’ and the pair won’t even ‘look at each other’.
And a video today showed the winger playing golf after choosing not to join up with the squad.
Bale raised eyebrows last month with some bizarre celebrations as Real lifted the title.
Bale was left in Madrid for the trip to Manchester and French legend Zidane has claimed that it was the 31-year-old’s decision not to play – but refused to reveal anything else.

Zidane said: “It was a personal conversation I had with him. He preferred not to play.

“The rest remains between me and him but he said he didn’t want to play.”
Zidane was pressed further on the matter but refused to elaborate.
“I answered before to explain the situation and I don’t want to add anything else,” he added.

“The rest is a private conversation between player and coach. There is nothing else to add.”

Asked if Bale had a future at Real, Zidane said: “I don’t know. Now he is a current player at Real Madrid.
“That has not changed. He is our player. I respect that and I respect him, like everyone else.
“He preferred not to play. That is the only thing I can tell you.
“The rest of us are all here, preparing for the game. The only thing we are concentrating on is the game.”

Real Madrid pink kit: Where’s cheapest for new away shirt debuting against Man City in Champions League?

REAL MADRID will have a new look as they take on Manchester City in the Champions League.
Los Blancos will be modelling their pink 2020/21 away shirt when they attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

    1

Karim Benzema models Real Madrid’s new away kit
How do I buy the Real Madrid pink away shirt?
The new Real Madrid away shirt comes to a whopping £109.95 via official manufacturer Adidas.
Via the official Real Madrid site, you can purchase the authentic shirt for €129.95 of the fan shirt for €89.95.
However, the short comes in substantially cheaper with Sports Direct, where it is available for £69.99.

Why do Real Madrid have a pink away kit?
Real Madrid announced their “spring pink” away kit design at the end of July.

The club claim that it is based on the beautiful appearance of the Spanish capital in the evening, commenting that the design is inspired “by a city lit at night, when Plaza De Cibeles, an icon of the city is at its most beautiful.”
Do Real Madrid have a third kit?
There is speculation that Real Madrid will opt for a dash of “spring pink” again on their third kit.
On that strip, the logo of the club, sponsor and kit manufacturer would all be pink on top of a primarily black base.
However, this kit has not been confirmed. More

Man City’s FFP let-off was ‘a clear slap in the face for Uefa’, claims ex-Bayern Munich chief as he sparks fresh row

FORMER Bayern Munich chief Uli Hoeness has slammed the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to overturn Man City’s Champions League ban.
The Citizens had been rapped by Uefa’s club financial control body (CFCB) back in February and slapped with a two-year suspension from European competition and £25million fine for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

    1

Uli Hoeness claims Man City’s FFP let-off was “a clear slap in the face for Uefa”
But City scored a major victory by winning their audacious appeal.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport verdict cleared the club of Uefa’s charge of “disguising equity funds”.
However, they did agree that City had obstructed the investigation and thereby ordered them to pay a fine of £10m, rather than £25m.
Hoeness reckons the decision undermines UEFA’s rules and he has blasted the governing body’s defence of the sentence.

The 68-year-old told DAZN and Goal: “When I read the reasoning by the international sports court CAS why it withdrew this sentence, I have to ask myself what all this is about,
“Ultimately, UEFA’s reasoning was simply weak. In principle, the CAS saw it the same way, but did not provide any solid evidence of Manchester City’s behaviour.
“If the judges at CAS have come to the conclusion that UEFA did a poor job, one need not wonder what the result is.
“The verdict was a clear slap in the face for UEFA. We still have to do with Manchester City – and the club can’t help it if things are poorly prepared.”

Hoeness risks infuriating the Citizens again, given that the Manchester giants were angry at the way Bayern used the German media to turn the head of the Leroy Sane.
Last summer they sent an angry letter to the Bundesliga giants to blast their courting of the 23-year-old, resulting in an apology.
But the Bavarians finally got their man and agreed a £54.8m deal at the end of June, having chased the speedster Sane for months.
