Man Utd new-boy Raphael Varane adamant he can add to his Real Madrid Champions League haul at Old Trafford

RAPHAEL VARANE believes everything is in place at Manchester United for him to add to his haul of Champions League winner’s medals.Varane won the competition four times in five seasons from 2013 to 2018 during his time with Real Madrid.
Raphael Varane says he can win the Champions League again at Man Utd
The Frenchman won Ol’ Big Ears four times in five years at Man Utd
And the French World Cup winner does not want to stop there.
Varane, 28, said: “We need everyone to be United in the belief that we can go all the way.
“Since I have been here I have seen a lot of quality in this team with huge potential, I’m convinced of that.
“We are working hard in training and I think we are improving all the time.
This team is on a positive upward curve.
“There is talent and experience, in fact there is everything you need to have that belief that you can do well.

“What we have to do is believe in ourselves, be ambitious and believe in our own potential. If we do that we can achieve things.
“Everything is there in the right place we just need to concentrate on the little details.”
It was a big decision for centre-back Varane to leave Real Madrid where he had enjoyed so much success to come to a club that is trying to get back to the top.
But it is not one he regrets.
He said: “It was a long process and I had to give it a lot of thought. It was not like an overnight decision.
“I wanted to leave Madrid for sure but I wanted to leave on good terms.
“I just wanted to try myself in another league, I wanted something different.
“I knew the Premier League was a fantastic league and now I have seen that for myself.
“It is always hard to make comparisons but these are two big clubs always wanting a lot from their players and expect a lot from their players and there are a lot of demands.
“The hopes and expectations are very similar.
‘YOU LIVE WITH PRESSURE AT THE BIG CLUBS’
“You know what it is going to be like if you suffer a defeat or a draw, it is always very negative.
“You just need to keep on a good run of results and be positive.
“That pressure, you live with in the big clubs.”
The pressure is certainly on United on Wednesday after a run of three defeats in four across three competitions.
They lost their opening Champions League Group game against Young Boys in Bern and now face a Villarreal side at Old Trafford who defeated them in last season’s Europa League Final.
Varane said: “It is going to be a very tough game. We are going to have to fight hard to have possession of the ball, press high and have the ambition to win the three points.
“We have to think about getting the basics right.”
Of course Varane has a good knowledge of Villarreal from his ten years with Real, something he has been willing to share with his manager and teammates.
He said: “We have an idea of how they will play and set up. I will share what I know from my time in Spain which is useful. But everyone at United know Villarreal from old.”
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goes into the game under the usual scrutiny after a poor run of games.
His old team-mate Gary Neville was at it on Sky once more claiming he is under pressure now to deliver silverware this season or next after more backing in the transfer market.
He has also claimed in the wake of United’s 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday that the team under Solskjaer is lacking a clear style of play.
‘NEVILLE’S ALWAYS GOT LOADS TO SAY’
But having been used to Neville’s forthright views as a team-mate as well, Solskjaer was once again happy to handle the flack.
Solskjaer said: “He’s always got loads to say, Gary.
“I’m used to Gary. He’s always said a lot, when I was sat next to him as well in the dressing-room.
“Everyone that has been associated with Man Utd knows that we want to keep the tempo up and attack quickly when we can. Maybe we did it too fast.
“Gary knows the DNA here at the club and what we are trying to do.”
Solskjaer found himself having to defend some individuals in his team as well after three defeats in four games across three different competitions.
Fred and Scott McTominay played as the defensive midfield duo in the defeat against Aston Villa and their combination has brought criticism from some sections of fans.
But Solskjaer is sticking by them.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news and transfer gossip from Old Trafford
He said: “The stats for them two have brought many good results with the energy they give us, the way they break up play.
“They are instrumental together with energy and desire and they are two that I can trust.
“Fans always have opinions when you have good players to pick from and it is hard to leave players out.”

Tuchel admits he’s powerless to get Chelsea stars double jabbed as new Covid crisis hits Blues with Kante quarantined

THOMAS TUCHEL is powerless to persuade his players to get double jabbed after Covid struck at Chelsea yet again.Midfielder N’Golo Kante is the latest player to test positive for the virus and must now be quarantined for ten days.
Thomas Tuchel can’t force players to have the Covid-19 vaccineCredit: Getty
It is not known whether Kante, 30, has been vaccinated.
The news on the eve of Chelsea’s tough Champions League match at Juventus is a grim reminder that the pandemic rages on.
It also brings into focus the ongoing debate about whether footballers should be jabbed because of the risks when playing.
Boss Tuchel said: “It would be easy to say yes now and get applause from a lot of people. But at the same time do I have the right to say that? I’m not so sure.
“I can make the decision for myself and everyone else has to reflect and take the risk or not. It’s a serious question.
“Vaccination seems to be a proper protection. I am vaccinated. I took the decision for myself. But I don’t really see myself in a position to speak out on proper recommendations. That would go too far.

“I’m a football coach, not a 100% expert on this. I would leave it to them.
“Everyone is an adult, living in a free country and society, and people can take their own choices.
“We take our actions and are responsible for it. We don’t want to lose players, but we are not angry with N’Golo.
“I am concerned about him like I am my injured players who took kicks in the game.
“I know the situation is far from over and all the time somebody gets it here from us and our crew, that makes it all the more aware it’s not over.”

Callum Hudson-Odoi was one of the first players in England to contract coronavirus during the first wave back in the spring of 2020.
His team-mate Kai Havertz later revealed the struggle to regain strength after contracting the virus at the end of last year.
Several other Chelsea players tested positive after summer holidays in 2020 and are all fine now.
Kante is a special case because he opted to stay away from Chelsea’s training ground during the first outbreak.
There are added concerns for his health in light of him passing out in front of fellow players in March 2018.
In football terms, the loss of Kante for Wednesday’s clash at Juventus and for Saturday’s home game with Southampton is a blow to the club.
Boss Tuchel is already missing key midfielder Mason Mount and defender Reece James is also crocked.
Juventus sold star player Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer
Defending European champions Chelsea sit second in Group H behind Juventus on goal difference.
The Italian two-time European champs are finding life tough following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. They sit tenth in Serie A.
Tuchel said: “They lost a big champion, a big point of reference and a big personality. But you can be a big team and a strong team without Cristiano.
“They have a lot of talent, a very experienced coach, they’re a proud club who are used to winning, a mentality shaped by the demand for winning.
“This is my first time to play Juventus. Yes, they’ve had some troubles in the start with their results in Serie A, but they were very convincing in the Champions League.
“Sometimes, if players are missing it’s also the same for us and the guys who come in want to show they are reliable.
“We play Juventus at Juventus. It demands respect for the quality and tradition of this club.”

Brittle Juventus barely recognisable from Serie A kings as Chelsea head to Turin looking for more Champions League joy

JUVENTUS are a club back in crisis. The team is barely recognisable from one that dominated Serie A with NINE straight titles.

And now they find themselves under investigation again, this time over a £37million tax probe.
The Old Lady confirmed its books are being scrutinised by the Italian stock exchange in an inspection that has already lasted two months.
Juve posted an Italian record losses of £181m in their accounts for last season, published this week.
But the smallprint revealed that the club is also subject to the ongoing probe into image rights deals worth £37m.
They were forced to sell Cristiano Ronaldo at a significant loss and were hit by their key role in the failed Super League breakaway.
And that’s just off the pitch.

On it, life after Ronaldo is far from a bed of roses.
They go into Wednesday’s huge clash with Chelsea languishing ninth in Serie A.
Juve started the season with two points from four games, including the season-opening 2-2 draw at Udinese which Ronaldo played in before his shock switch to Manchester United.
They have won their last two games but now have both Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata injured leaving Moise Kean as their only recognised striker for the visit of the European champions.
Max Allegri returned to the club in the summer for £8m-a-season to take over from Andrea Pirlo but finds himself in a bit of a mess.
Allegri, 54, won five successive titles with Juventus between 2014 and 2019, following Antonio Conte’s hat-trick from 2011-14.
Conte’s wins came, of course, after the club bounced back from the match-fixing debacle which saw them relegated from Serie A in 2006.
Allegri was replaced by Maurizio Sarri, who lasted only a year despite guiding the club to a NINTH successive title.
Moise Kean has scored just once for Juventus following his summer arrival from EvertonCredit: Getty
Pirlo proved to be a massive disappointment and the club finished fourth last season, only qualifying for the Champions League thanks to a final-day implosion by Napoli.
Right now, Juve can look miles off Inter Milan and there is no way they will win the Champions League.
Before leaving, Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 games at Juventus. He led the way with 29 in Serie A last season.
As well as losing Ronaldo for economic reasons, Juve failed to sign goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from AC Milan due to wage demands  and instead, he moved to PSG.
Former Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny has been in terrible form and he finally paid the price ahead of Sunday’s 3-2 win over Sampdoria and was dropped for Mattia Perin.
Juve have been playing in a 4-4-2 system but the injuries to their two forwards is likely to spark a change against Chelsea.
Despite forming the bedrock of Italy’s defence at Euro 2020, 37-year-old skipper Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonnuci, 34, are coming to the end of their careers.
In the summer, Juve’s only arrival was Manuel Locatelli from Sassuolo who is an all-action midfielder.
But it is that departure of Ronaldo that has now left this team looking low-key and without an attacking A-lister.
Juventus legend Marco Tardelli, speaking to SunSport, said: “Juve need to start defending better and there is nothing wrong with winning 1-0.
“But I am not optimistic about the match against Chelsea. I like how Chelsea play overall because they can put Romelu Lukaku in the middle of their attack.”
Italian goalkeeper legend Dino Zoff, 79, played for Juve between 1972 to 1983 including 330 matches in a row. He captained Italy to the World Cup in 1982.
He said: “Juventus-Chelsea is a high level game with two very strong teams but at the moment I can’t say who will win in Turin. Without Dybala and Morata, who scores against Chelsea?”

Villarreal icon Senna insists Europa League fairytale against Man Utd would not have happened with European Super League

VILLARREAL legend Marcos Senna reckons his side’s fairytale Euro triumph proves why the European Super League isn’t needed. In May the Spanish minnows beat Manchester United in a penalty shoot out to seal the unlikeliest of Europa League final wins.

It was a triumph that would never be possible if talk of an elite, closed-shop European Super League ever came to fruition.
And Senna, one of the club’s all-time greats, is convinced that should be enough to make sure any future plans are KO’d once and for all.
The Brazilian-born former midfielder, who spent 11 years at the club, said: “You have to win and deserve things on the pitch, not in the offices. We beat United with the ball.
“A Super League would take the shine off what football is all about and I’m so glad it’s not going ahead. We would have been so annoyed if it had.”
Senna, a 2008 Euros winner after taking out Spanish citizenship and now a Villarreal director, will be at Old Trafford tonight when the sides meet in the Champions League.
And he insists that Unai Emery’s team are coming to England convinced they can pull off another famous victory. He added: “A draw wouldn’t be bad, but the obligation to win.

“United are coming off the back of a defeat, which makes things more difficult for us, but we have the opportunity to make a very important leap in Europe.
“I haven’t spoken to Unai about tactics, but he has clear ideas and always wants to go out to win. I don’t think he’s coming to Old Trafford to lock himself in or protect the team.
“We have great players and we have to try to go out for the game. United are a great team but our best defence is a good attack.
“The plan is to go to Old Trafford, compete and not give up on anything. We’ve been to their ground twice and drawn both times, so if it’s three points, then great.
“It’s a source of great pride for the city to meet a world-class team. And we know we’ll be up to the task and compete.
“At Villarreal we dream of getting through the group stage, enjoying it, going far and trying to get back into the Champions League next season. We want to stay in the elite.”

Grealish dreamed of these Champions League nights before Man City transfer… but Messi proved he’s still the best

SITTING at home on his sofa in Birmingham, these were the nights Jack Grealish dreamed of being a part of.Before his £100million move to Manchester City this summer, mid-week Champions League nights were spent tweeting and drooling over his idol Kevin De Bruyne on TV.

But Jack Grealish failed to deliver in the French capitalCredit: Reuters
Now, he is a part of them.
The fantasy is being played out in real life. Sharing a pitch with the likes of De Bruyne, Neymar and Lionel Messi in the footballing cauldron that is the Parc des Princes.
A life-long ambition has been ticked off for the kid raised in Solihull, one he spoke about on repeat while ripping it up for his boyhood Aston Villa season after season in the Prem.
The question now is: Can he do more than simply be a member of the cast? Can he play starring role in games full of world class talent? Can he be the one people drool over?
On Tuesday night’s evidence, there were glimpses. Flashes of light in an otherwise disappointing European away-day for Pep Guardiola’s City.
But playing for a club and a side striving to win this competition by beating the continent’s very best – especially with a £100m price tag – there must be more than glimpses.

FREE BETS: GET OVER £2,000 IN NEW CUSTOMER DEALS

Messi showed the young English prodigy the way with his stunning late goal. He doesn’t do glimpses. He does thunderbolts.
Grealish is an ambitious lad. He is desperate to elevate his own game to those sorts of levels at a crucial point in his career.
He knows he belongs on this stage. He showed at the Euros with England that he can mix it with the game’s elite at his wonderful, defender-dizzying, hair-bouncing best.
But he will also know more than most that nights like these are ones that cannot pass you by. They don’t come around that often.
On this occasion, despite his and his team’s efforts, it was not a memorable Grealish outing to stick in the scrap book. Messi was hardly made to look out of date.
Guardiola agreed, hooking him off just after the hour mark for another young English talent looking to make his mark on the biggest stages, Phil Foden.
Messi’s stunning strike was reminiscent of his Barcelona daysCredit: Getty
His stand-out snap shots were ones of him slamming the floor in frustration like a disgruntled toddler as the Spanish ref took little notice of his dramatic tumbles.
    Some things never change.
His impact on the game early on was limited before Parisian midfielder Idrissa Gueye rifled a rocket into the top corner in the ninth minute.
As City pushed for a way back into the game, they turned to their record signing for inspiration down the left.
There were those now-famous jinks of the hips and darts inside up against Hakimi, but none that brought about too much in the form of chances.
Former Premier League star Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring
Although it was his dart inside mid-way through the half that sparked City’s best chance – teeing up De Bruyne for the cross. Raheem Sterling hit the bar. Bernardo Silva somehow followed suit.
The second half was full of much of the same as City struggled to seriously test Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Grealish made the occasional dart into the box, only to stutter and stall as PSG swarmed around him like a nasty rash.
And he had the best seat in the house – from the bench – as Messi gave a stark reminder why he is still the best of the best.
Take notes, Jack. Your dreams may have come true, but there is a long way to go.

Porto 1 Liverpool 5: Salah and Firmino score twice as Reds run riot away in Portugal for second Champions League win

THIS was supposed to be the nasty group.Of the four English teams in the Champions League, the warning lights were flashing for Liverpool when they were put together with Porto, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Senegal international Sadio Mane doubled the Reds’ lead away in Portugal just before the breakCredit: Getty
Yet Jurgen Klopp’s team, once again, already look dead certs for the knockout stages after making light work of Porto. Once again.
A thrilling, nerve-shredding win over Milan in the opening round of Europe was followed here in Portugal by a remarkably easy win courtesy of some laughable defending by the hosts and clever play by the Reds.
Equally, it also helps when Mohamed Salah is in your team.
Incredibly, Liverpool have now smashed 14 goals past Porto in their three games here and while this team oozes European experience, 20-year-old Curtis Jones proved – yet again – that he is going to be one hell of a player. He already is, to be fair.
But Salah has still been the headline story of Liverpool’s season. Having reached his century of Premier League goals for Liverpool in the 3-3 draw with Brentford, edged towards another record last night with his 28th and 29th Champions League goals.
As he threatens to tear all of the Liverpool scoring records apart, Salah is just one goal behind Steven Gerrard, the club’s top scorer in the competition.
And his blistering form also serves as a warning for Manchester City with the teams meeting at Anfield this Sunday.

In Europe, Liverpool’s next outing is away to Atletico on October 19, but even if they suffer a wobble in the Spanish capital, it seems highly unlikely – from what we have seen in Group B so far – that Klopp will have too many problems.
This was Liverpool’s third visit here to the Estadio do Dragao in the space of three-and-half years.
The team recorded impressive 5-0 and 4-1 wins, both in the knockout stages, to silence a notoriously rowdy crowd but there was a different atmosphere yesterday as there was social distancing in the stands.
Missing for Liverpool was Trent Alexander-Arnold who has suffered a groin issue and he also looks set to miss Sunday’s battle with City.
Porto also suffered one major blow in the warm-up when 38-year-old captain Pepe, who had been struggling with a muscle injury, pulled up with a problem in the warm-up.
And they had to reshuffle again in the 14th minute when right-winger Otavio, their best player, also suffered a problem.
Shortly after, in their first defensive mistake, Porto were punished.
Jones, who looks as though he has been playing in this Liverpool midfield for years, cut in from the left as the home defence stood off him.
Liverpool outclassed Porto at the Estadio do Dragao for their second Champions League win of the seasonCredit: AP
Egyptian king Salah has banged in eight goals in all competitions this termCredit: AP
His shot was parried by keeper Diogo Costa, left-back Zaidu made a complete mess of a clearance and Salah was handed a simple chance to poke the ball in.
Goal number 28 in the Champions League came in only his 48th appearance but another one would follow later.
Porto lost confidence, dropped back and invited more Liverpool pressure before becoming an embarrassing shambles.
Keeper Costa saved one effort from Andy Robertson and delivered an outstanding stop to tip over Jordan Henderson’s effort which was arrowing towards the top corner.
Yet that stop purely delayed the inevitable as Porto displayed some major weakness without veteran Pepe organising the defence.
It was another easy goal, this time for Sadio Mane, who could not believe his luck as the Porto defence and their keeper left James Milner’s cross for each other.
There was a VAR check for offside but it was always going to stand and hardly surprisingly, the home fans started to turn on their team.
The second half felt more like a training ground exercise and the third came on the hour when Jones delivered the finest moment of the game.
Roberto Firmino put Liverpool 4-1 up after Mehdi Taremi had pulled one back for the hosts
Firmino celebrates with Brazilian compatriot Fabinho after scoring Liverpool’s fifth against PortoCredit: AFP
He won possession in his own half and carried the ball effortlessly towards the edge of the home area and he spotted an unmarked Salah who took one touch before burying the ball through the keeper’s legs.
Alisson was finally beaten by a header from Mehdi Taremi following a move down the right although Liverpool’s defending was sloppy.
Substitute Roberto Firmino made the most of an moment of comical decision-making by keeper Costa who charging off his line and the Brazilian rolled the ball towards the net from 40 yards.
The outstanding Jones was involved in that move and although he deserved a goal, his his shot rebounded towards Firmino who curled the ball into the corner.
After being flagged offside after an incredibly long wait, the goal was awarded.
What another remarkable victory in the second city of Portugal although you would expect Liverpool’s defence to be handed a far tougher test when City arrive in four days’ time.
Equally, having started the season in the way they finished last term, Liverpool currently look as though they will put together a much better challenge from last season.
The Manchester City bus driver will not be the only person terrified about the trip to Anfield on Sunday. Pep Guardiola and his team also have every reason to worry.

It was a typical Messi goal. The Barcelona icon picked up the ball in his own half and began running at the weary Man City defence.
Pep Guardiola’s players stood off the forward before he laid the ball off to team-mate Kylian Mbappe on the edge of the box.
The Frenchman played a neat one-two onto Messi’s left foot and he fired into the top-left corner of Ederson’s goal.
PSG fans went wild at the Parc des Princes to celebrate their newest star as the hosts went on to complete a convincing 2-0 victory.
Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring early on before Messi’s outstanding strike 16 minutes from time settled the contest.

Messi will be relieved to bag his first goal for the French giants after failing to score in his first three outings.
He was subbed in PSG’s 2-1 victory against title rivals Lyon earlier this month and missed their last game against Montpellier through injury.
Guardiola recently suggested PSG are now an unstoppable force after adding Messi to their illustrious ranks.
Fans are excited to see how Messi links up with Mbappe and Neymar during this season after catching a glimpse on Tuesday evening.
Speaking before the game, Guardiola said: “This amount of quality I don’t know how to stop them, they’re so good.
