Kevin De Bruyne refuses to blame Raheem Sterling’s horror miss for Lyon loss as Man City vent about VAR again

KEVIN DE BRUYNE refused to blame Raheem Sterling for Manchester City’s exit from Europe.
Sterling missed a shocking late sitter when he blazed over an open goal from five yards with City trailing 2-1.

Lyon sub Moussa Dembele made him pay by scoring his second of the night to make it 3-1 just SIXTY SECONDS later.
De Bruyne, yesterday named Premier League Player of the Season, said: “We still had seven or eight minutes to equalise. So I don’t blame Raheem, it’s football.
“He did so many good things in the game and people are talking about the miss. That’s the way it goes I guess.”
City centre-back Aymeric Laporte held his hands up for a “bad team performance” but was baffled by VAR allowing Lyon’s second goal.

Laporte claimed he had been fouled in the build-up to Moussa Dembele’s first strike —   but neither Dutch whistler Danny Makkelie nor the video  ref saw fit to disallow it.
Laporte tweeted: “Just to be clear: I will not hide, I’m a football player but a man  foremost, we all made mistakes in this game, and I also take my responsibility for the bad team performance.
“But this decision is hard to accept, especially in a  crucial qualifier AND with the help of VAR.”
Team-mate Fernandinho weighed in on Twitter:  “Disappointing and painful night in Lisbon. Life sometimes can be cruel, and football isn’t different.

“But now is time to get a little rest and get ready for the next season. And it will be very different.”
City have failed to reach the semi-finals since 2016.
And De Bruyne, whose goal had  cancelled out Maxwel Cornet’s first-half strike, added: “It’s a little bit of a shame because we had good hopes to do well this year.
“I don’t think we are far away. At this level it’s just small details. The difference against Lyon is we made mistakes and they scored — but the chances we  created we didn’t take.

“In the first half we didn’t play the way we usually do. We didn’t create enough.
“In the second half, we played much better and created many chances.
“They had two chances in the second half and scored two goals.”
Lyon now face Barcelona batterers Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s semi-final.

De Bruyne said: “Lyon have a great team.
“If I have to pick a player who impressed me, it’s Houssem Aouar. He was fantastic.”
KDB produced 20 assists during the Prem campaign to equal Thierry Henry’s record and scored 13 times to help Pep Guardiola’s men finish second in the table.
But Liverpool beat City to the title to end their 30-year wait for league  glory and Jurgen Klopp was named Prem Manager of the Season.

Reds and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold clinched Young Player of the Season after he had a key role in finally  bringing the championship back to Anfield.
Tottenham star Son Heung-min’s strike against Burnley, where he ran the length of the pitch, won Goal of the Season.
Votes from the public were added to those of 20 Prem captains and a panel of experts to decide the winners in all categories. More

Luis Suarez placed on Barcelona transfer list after club’s humiliating exit from the Champions League

LUIS SUAREZ has been placed on Barcelona’s transfer list, according to reports.
The Catalans are planning a major overhaul after their humiliating Champions League exit and the Uruguayan is one of the stars they would be happy to let go.

    1

Luis Suarez has been put on Barcelona’s transfer list
Barca were thrashed 8-2 by Bayern Munich on Friday night as they crashed out the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
And a mass exodus is now planned after the rout highlighted deep rooted issues at the Nou Camp.
Suarez is one of the players highlighted for a potential exit, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

The 33-year-old has one season left on his contract but has a clause which automatically triggers a year extension if he plays 60 per cent of Barca’s games next campaign.

It is said the Barca hierarchy consider Inter star Lautaro Martinez as a suitable replacement – and he would also be cheaper than Suarez.
Only five players are said to be safe from the planned cull this summer.
Just keeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong and Lionel Messi from the senior crop are protected.
While future talents Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig are also said to be off limits to other clubs.

Barca chiefs have reportedly already decided to sack Quique Setien after the Champions League shambles and his inability to win LaLiga ahead of bitter rivals Real Madrid.
And Messi is said to have threatened to quit if there is not an urgent restructure.

Maurico Pochettino is said to be favourite to take over from Setien.
But senior players are said to be “dead against” the potential appointment.
And even club legend Gerard Pique has offered to leave for the good of the club.

Ex-Man Utd star Memphis Depay celebrates Lyon’s Champions League win with swipe at City, saying: Manchester is still RED

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED star Memphis Depay is clearly still a Red Devil at heart.
The Lyon star took a swipe at former rivals Man City following last night’s stunning Champions League upset.

The Dutchman played his part as Rudi Garcia’s side shocked Europe by knocking Pep Guardiola’s side out at the quarter-final stage in Lisbon.
After the match, Depay took to Instagram, posting a Bleacher Report graphic to his story.
The cartoon image depicts Depay himself celebrating next to a lion, with Kevin De Bruyne and Guardiola looking shocked and dismayed.
And his caption will delight United fans, as he wrote: “Manchester is still RED”.

Depay made 53 appearances for United between 2015 and 2017, before being discarded by former manager Jose Mourinho.
He has since flourished, however, becoming captain of Lyon in Ligue 1.
And having shaken off a nasty cruciate ligament injury, Depay has more than played his part in Lyon’s stunning Champions League run.
His composed panenka penalty put paid to Juventus, while he played the opening 75 minutes last night.

Goals from Maxwel Cornet and a double from substitute Moussa Dembele sent the Ligue 1 side to the semi-finals, with the third coming just 58 seconds after Raheem Sterling’s stunning open-goal miss at the other end.

One day we will break this gap to the semis.
    Pep Guardiola

Boss Guardiola has taken much criticism, particularly for starting with the likes of David Silva, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez all on the bench.
After the match, the beleaguered City boss said: “One day we will break this gap to the semis.

“In the first 20, 25 minutes we struggled to find spaces to attack.
“The second half was okay – we were there. I had a feeling we were better. You have to be perfect in this competition.”
As for United, Depay may well watch on as they take on Sevilla in Cologne – hoping that they can extend their never-ending season to Friday’s Europa League final.

Jamie Carragher thought Man City had bagged the equaliser
City had the perfect chance to make it 2-2 after Gabriel Jesus squared the ball across the box.
Sterling had an open goal to aim at, but somehow his shot ended up in the stands.
Carragher, who was watching from the studio, could not believe his eyes.
The Liverpool legend jumped out of his seat and screamed as he thought City had scored.

But he was left lost for words after Sterling’s effort missed the target completely.
Just 59 seconds later, Moussa Dembele found the net to dump City out of the competition.
And fans claimed to now understand why Harry Kane did not square the ball to Sterling during THAT World Cup game against Croatia.
