How Man Utd could line up against Atalanta with Cavani keeping place up front and Rashford and Greenwood missing out

IF IT ain’t broke, don’t fix it.So goes the old saying and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will surely be tempted to live by it on Tuesday.

Manchester United travel to Atalanta with the pressure valve easing at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils bagged a 3-0 win away at Tottenham to keep Solskjaer in the manager’s job – for now.
And he is likely to maintain faith in the starting XI that saved his bacon against Spurs for their upcoming Champions League clash.
Last time United faced their Italian opponents they shipped two goals at home before talisman Cristiano Ronaldo saved the day.
They also conceded four against Leicester and a whopping five at home to Liverpool playing in Solskjaer’s regular 4-2-3-1 formation.
But the Norwegian opted for three central defenders plus wing-backs against Spurs and the extra numbers seemed to do the trick.

United were a tighter unit at the back with a steady base from which to launch attacking salvos.
Those came from veterans Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, with the two starting together for the first time.
The Uruguayan Cavani came in for youngsters Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.
He added some attacking nous to United’s game and it was little surprise to see both his name and Ronaldo’s on the scoresheet.
Solskjaer’s position is far from secure and he will be desperate for a win in Bergamo.
But if he does decide to go back to what he knows, there is room to bring in some of his young guns.

Reintroducing a 4-2-3-1 would probably herald the return of Greenwood and Rashford to the starting XI.
Jadon Sancho is currently out of favour, although he would relish the opportunity of a start in Europe.
It would be hard to see both Ronaldo and Cavani starting with one up top – and there is no chance CR7 volunteers to drop to the bench.
And could Tuesday signal a return to the fold for Paul Pogba?
With his ban only for domestic football, a Champions League place could beckon for the World Cup winner.

Pep Guardiola wears T-shirt in tribute to Man City fan fighting for life in hospital after attack by rival supporters

Hours after City’s game in Brugge on Tuesday night, De Pauw, 63, was attacked outside a shop as he returned home.
He was immediately rushed to hospital and placed in a coma with doctors declaring he had life-threatening injuries.
Five men have appeared in court over the incident and two remain in custody – while the victim’s condition is described as ‘stable’.
Guardiola is praying Guido will continue to improve and that he will be able to join them at the Etihad in the future.
He said: “Of course all the club and the organisation, from our chairman Khaldoon and every person here, we are with him.
“We are quite optimistic because the last hours he is getting better.

“Of course he has all the support from the club for what they need with the investigation from our club.
“We are sending a big hug for him and all his family and we wish he comes back to Etihad Stadium soon to follow us.”
Guardiola is hoping those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice in Belgium.
He added: “Hopefully this isn’t going to happen again. It’s difficult to understand why people go to enjoy a football game and this kind of terrible things.
“I’m pretty sure Bruges will do the right investigation on that and they can take the person or the people involved in this.”

Chelsea suffer huge injury blow with Romelu Lukaku facing a MONTH out after twisting ankle in win over Malmo

ROMELU LUKAKU faces a month out – dealing Chelsea a serious blow in the title race. The club’s record £97.5million signing twisted his ankle during Wednesday’s 4-0 Champions League win over Malmo.
Romelu Lukaku faces a month out dealing Chelsea a serious blow in the title raceCredit: Getty
And he now faces three to four weeks on the sidelines during a key part of the season.
After a tough run of fixtures, the Premier League leaders have a favourable spell with games again Norwich, Newcastle, Burnley and Leicester.
All would be viewed as winnable games where Chelsea would expect to rack up precious points to hold off main rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.
But Lukaku will now have to sit it out and it means ambitious Chelsea will be robbed of their ‘reference point’ up front as he is known by boss Thomas Tuchel.
Lukaku has been on a barren run with no goals in seven games for his club.
But with him sidelined and injury to fellow forward Timo Werner, it makes life difficult for Tuchel over the next few weeks.

The brilliant Belgian has been overdue a rest and will get an enforced one now.
Tuchel said: “It was necessary that Romelu was on the pitch, he started very strong.
“I spoke with him about the situation, that I think he carries a bit of a mental fatigue around with him, and that I think it’s also normal, but he’s our number nine, he’s our reference up front and the best thing against mental fatigue is a goal and we knew that we could be the dominant team.
“We knew today we built a fast attack with Mason and Timo around him, and him as the reference point up front in the middle, and I had a strong belief that he could in a Champions League match turn things around in terms of scoring and being decisive, which he actually did because he was super strong in our start and he took the foul, so maybe without him it’s not 2-0.
“I don’t regret it because it’s not a muscle injury and not from physical fatigue, he is more a little bit overplayed.
“That is just my opinion, maybe I’m not even right, and it was the moment to give him confidence and let him play.
“I don’t regret it because he was decisive and things like this can happen, it’s just bad luck.”

Chelsea’s next big game is their home Champions League game with Juventus on November 23.
That is followed five days later by a home Premier League clash against Manchester United.
Lukaku is expected to be fit by then.

Cristiano Ronaldo has more Champions League wins than Juventus and Chelsea with just 11 fewer than Man Utd

CRISTIANO RONALDO has won more Champions League games than Juventus and Chelsea. And he is only 11 behind Manchester United.

The Portugal legend was at it again last night as he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 comeback victory over Atalanta at Old Trafford.
The result sent home fans crazy as the pressure was lifted off United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And it meant Ronaldo has now won an incredible 114 Champions League matches out of 178 since the competition’s inception in 1992.
That tally puts him FIFTH in a list of Europe’s top clubs.
And Ronaldo is well ahead of AC Milan, Arsenal and Porto.
The veteran is also clear of Chelsea, who have played one more game in the competition.

And Ronaldo even has more wins than former side Juventus.
Indeed, the striker is only 11 victories behind United, but that will stay the same unless he ends up playing for another top-four side later in his career.
However, Ronaldo is some way off Bayern Munich, who have 155 wins in Europe’s top competition.
Barcelona are second with 160, while Real Madrid lead the table with 166 wins from 281 games.

A lot of Los Blancos’ success in the Champions League has come down to Ronaldo too.
He won FOUR European titles during his time in the Spanish capital, including a magnificent three-in-a-row under Zinedine Zidane.
And Ronnie will be hoping to add a second Champions League crown to his United collection this term, having won it with the Red Devils in 2008.

‘Two words.. viva Ronaldo goodnight!’ – Fans MUTE BT Sport over Robbie Savage’s ’embarrassing’ punditry in Man Utd win

MANCHESTER UNITED fans MUTED BT Sport because of Robbie Savage’s ’embarrassing punditry’.The former Red Devils schoolboy bellowed: ‘Viva Ronaldo, he’s done it again,’ when Cristiano headed in the winner to complete the 3-2 comeback win against Atalanta.

And at full-time, Savage concluded: “Two words: viva Ronaldo, goodnight,” before later mocking his own maths with a tweet.
His over-zealous commentary did not go down well with viewers back home.
One supporter labelled Savage ‘unbearable’ while hundreds piled in on Twitter.
A fan wrote: “Robbie Savage is a fantastic advert for the ‘mute’ button on your TV remote control…”
Another said: “Had to mute Robbie Savage.”
A third added: “Is there a comms option without Robbie Savage noises?”

One commented: “Someone at BT needs to have a word with Robbie Savage. This is embarrassing.”
And a final user joked: “Robbie Savage might as well just start singing Glory Glory Man United at this point.”
Savage could not hide his pleasure as Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Ronaldo scored in the second half to secure a massive three points in the Champions League.
He hailed the ‘movement of Harry Maguire, peeling out wide’ before replays showed the skipper standing still at the back post to net the equaliser.
But while one former United man was delighted, another was less impressed – especially by the first half.
Paul Scholes, Savage’s BT Sport colleague, slated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a damning verdict of the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford which saw United concede twice.
Legendary midfielder Scholes said: “Ole was emotional but the shape was all wrong in the first half.
“I thought Atalanta had too many chances and to be fair, when a team is getting beat 2-0 at half-time at home, I wouldn’t say the performance could be that good.

“Like I said, he’s emotional. He’s just won a game, but I didn’t like the first half and it’s worried me.
“If we play like that against a proper team it will be disastrous.
“I get the United excitement but that first half put me off the second half, and if United were playing a better team they’d be out of sight.”

‘Klopp will be rubbing his hands together’ – Paul Scholes fears for Man Utd vs Liverpool after Atalanta first-half flop

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes has declared Jurgen Klopp will be “rubbing his hands together” following the 3-2 win against Atalanta. The Red Devils once again came back from behind in the Champions League to win late on at Old Trafford having trailed 2-0 going into the break.

Scholes believes Liverpool will breeze past the Red Devils on Sunday if they played like they did against the Serie A sideCredit: AFP
It was a disastrous display from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men in the opening 45 minutes as they were outclassed by their Italian opponents, who could have scored more.
And Scholes has stated they will be not be able to get away with a similar outing against rivals Liverpool on Sunday at the Theatre of Dreams.
The BT Sport pundit said: “The first half put me off the second half. It was worrying, it looked anything but a team and lacked unity.
“It was the back four, the two holding midfielders then the rest. Can they go and play against Liverpool or Manchester City like that? Never in a million years.
“The two midfield players were playing on their own. They conceded so many chances. Against quality opposition there’s no way you’re winning that games.
“Imagine Jurgen Klopp during that first half at home, watching rubbing his hands together.

“They can’t keep on relying on the goalkeeper like that. The quality has never been in doubt, it’s at the other end.
“I don’t want to sound like a party pooper but that first half was a major worry for me.”
He added: “I felt sorry for the two midfield players. There is not a chance they’ll play 4-2-4 this weekend, if they do they’ll get destroyed.
“Fred and [Scott] McTominay – I don’t care what two midfielders in the world – you cannot handle that on your own.
“The front four are so high, there is no connect between the team. If we play like that against Man City and Liverpool it will be disastrous.”
Following the victory over Atalanta, Solskjaer bizarrely stated his side performed well in the first half, despite match-winner Cristiano Ronaldo left fuming with his team-mates.

He remarked: “We played well first half. It was just two chances and two goals.
“Out of nothing they scored the first goal then another set play. But they never stopped believing and kept on going.
“They made a few mistakes but they kept going.”

    THANKS FOR JOINING US
That’s all from us tonight as Cristiano Ronaldo yet again came up with the goods to secure late victory for Manchester United in the Champions League.
The Red Devils had gone into the break 2-0 down and were met with boos from the Old Trafford crowd.
But a Marcus Rashford goal early into the second half started the comeback, before Harry Maguire levelled the scores with an instinctive finish.
And then it was only going to be one man who scored the winner.
Ronaldo rose the highest to expertly guide a Luke Shaw cross into the bottom corner at the Stretford End to seal all three points.
It sees United top Group F at the halfway point of the group stages after being bottom at half time.
And next up for the Red Devils is a huge clash against fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
They then travel to Tottenham before flying to Bergamo for the reverse clash against Atalanta on November 2.
La Dea meanwhile are in action against Udinese, Sampdoria and Lazio before the hosting the Red Devils.
That’s all from us for now though.
Thanks for joining us, it’s been a pleasure.
    MORE FROM SOLSKJAER
The United boss also says: “I thought we played well and then out of nothing they scored the first goal.
“And then another set play, a goal, but they never stopped believing.
“They kept on going, made a few mistakes yes but we kept going.”
    OLE’S ANALYSIS
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has this to say about the match winner Ronaldo: “He’s great in front of goal.
“And if anyone wants to criticise him for attitude or effort, just watch this game.”
    GIVE US YER SHIRT
The pitch invader did in fact get a handful of Ronaldo’s shirt before being wrestled to the ground.
In the end he was marched away empty handed after giving CR7 a fright.

    FULL TIME SCENES
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows just how big a win that is.
Instead of ending the night bottom of Group F they go into the reverse game against Atalanta as group leaders.
And it also creates good momentum ahead of Sunday’s mouthwatering clash against bitter rivals Liverpool.

    SKIPPER SPEAKS
Here are the full time thoughts of Harry Maguire: “The first half we conceded two bad goals, two big moments in the game.
“Obviously they played a quick free kick for the first [which] caught us out again.
“And then the set play which we shouldn’t be conceding [from].
“We actually created a lot of chances in the first half so we knew coming in at half time that the next goal would be crucial.
“We got the goal that we needed, what we deserved and in the end I think we deserved the victory.”
    FULL TIME WHISTLE
And you could see what it meant to CR7 when the full time whistle blew.
He dropped to his knees in celebration when the three points were confirmed.

    COMEBACK COMPLETE
Ronaldo even ditched his trademark ‘siu’ celebration in favour of a emotion filled knee slide.

    PITCH INVASION
One fan tries to get a hand on Ronaldo’s shirt at full time but was stopped by stewards just before he reached the match winner.

    STAT ATTACK
United were a different side after the break, and it shows in the match stats.
The Red Devils managed 22 efforts by the end of the game, with nine of those on target.
Whatever Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said at half time clearly worked.

    BOTTOM TO TOP
After being BOTTOM of Group F at half time, Manchester United finish MatchDay Three as group leaders.

    VIVA RONALDO
What more can you say about Cristiano Ronaldo?
He did it late on against Villarreal last time out, and he did it again tonight.
Here’s a look at his winning goal.
    It’s a trademark CR7 header.
CRISTIANOOOOO RONALDOOOO!! 🙌He always has to have his say, and he’s come up with another big goal for Man Utd in the Champions League! From 0-2 down to 3-2 up! pic.twitter.com/hF5p1R3d4D— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) October 20, 2021
