Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo omitted from Uefa Men’s Player of the Year shortlist for first time ever

LIONEL MESSI and Cristiano Ronaldo have missed out on the shortlist for the Uefa Men’s Player Of The Year crown for the first time in its history.
On Wednesday, the three finalists were confirmed with Kevin de Bruyne joining Bayern Munich stars Robert Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer.

Polish forward Lewandowski is the hot favourite for the award, smashing 55 goals in all competitions from 47 appearances.
Those goals helped Bayern to a stunning treble despite having to sack coach Niko Kovac in November.
Vying for the honour with the Bavarian pair is de Bruyne, who won the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Year gong for 2019-20.
But the absence of either Ronaldo or Messi from the announcement was a first for the competition, which was created in 2011.

No player has won the Uefa trophy more than Ronaldo, honoured for 2013-14, 2015-16 and 2016-17 with nominations in six other years.
Messi, meanwhile, claimed the 2010-11 and 2014-15 crowns alongside his six Ballon d’Or wins.

Both men won the Uefa Club Footballer of the Year award that preceded this prize on one occasion.
Although Barcelona failed to win a trophy last season, the Argentine was on the verge of a nomination with the fourth-most votes.

Votes were cast by the 80 coaches in charge of Champions League and Europa League group stage sides, along with 55 top journalists representing each nation.
Level with Messi in fourth was Champions League finalist Neymar, who entered the top ten for only the second time.

Bayern dominated the top ten with Thomas Muller, Thiago Alcantara and Joshua Kimmich accruing a decent number of votes.
Kylian Mbappe took seventh with 39 votes, leaving Ronaldo in tenth after leading Juventus to another Scudetto.
Uefa’s award will be handed out on October 1, during the Champions League group stage draw.

Champions League giants facing huge cash crisis with Uefa taking £530m off prize money in blow to Man Utd and Chelsea

EUROPEAN football faces a cash ‘crisis’ which will last for two years.
Clubs face being hit by a triple whammy of no gate income, reduced TV money and sponsors demanding lower value deals.

    1

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has issued a stark warning to Europe’s top clubs
And Europe’s biggest sides including Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City will also be hit by a £530million cut in Uefa prize money for the Champions League and Europa League.
The gloomy forecast was given by Juventus president Andrea Agnelli.
Agnell told an audience of Europe’s biggest clubs that the real price of the Covid-19 pandemic has still to be paid.

Speaking at the opening of the virtual general assembly of the European Club Association, Agnelli said: “None of us could have imagined what we have had to live with over recent months.
“Now we are looking at a top revenue decrease of approximately £3.6billion in the next two years.
“According to Fifa, 90 per cent of those top line losses will be borne by clubs.
“I don’t believe we will have a full scope of what this means to us until we have the first set of accounts published this autumn.

“But we do have a set of facts which we have to face.

Four Premier League teams crack the top ten highest wage bills in Europe

“Playing in empty stadiums has meant the complete wipeout of a very important source of revenue for everyone.
“Irrespective of whether we are a top club, medium club, or small club, we all have stadiums and we have receipts which have been pretty much wiped out.
“You have seen very important rebates for the broadcasters both at domestic level at international level.
“We have seen the £330m rebate in the Premier League and a drop of about £180m in the Bundesliga’s domestic rights.
“Now we are in the process of finalising the accounts with Uefa with a reduction of around £519m for international club competitions.
“That is all money which is not going to be distributed.”
Uefa had planned to distribute £2.31billion across its club competitions last term, with the rebate potentially costing Liverpool, City, United, Chelsea and Spurs up to £20m each over two seasons.
And Agnelli warned that was just the start of a financial nightmare across Europe, with the biggest clubs most at risk.

He added: “No gate receipts plus rebates for broadcasters will mean that sponsors will ask for rebates themselves because we are not in a position to deliver some of the rights we have promised in the first place.
“And no matter which industry they are operating in, all our sponsors are living in the same pandemic.
“It is going to be difficult to imagine we are going to see the same values of the sponsors coming in when we renew our current deals with them, whether it be shirt sponsors or secondary sponsors.
“I am quite sure we are going to see a rebate on this and this will fall into the transfer market.
“There are estimates which say we are going to see the shrinking of evaluations and therefore of the value of the transfer market of 20 to 30 per cent.
“That is evidently less money circulating.
“This is going to be dramatic for all of us which will turn out to be potentially a cash crisis for most of the clubs.
“We will have to be very careful in how we manage this season and next.
“This is where we really stand. We have seen a dramatic drop in revenues and a dramatic drop in club revenues.
“I have the fear that some of the big clubs will probably suffer losses that are bigger than entire federations or confederations across the world.”

Muller reveals Barcelona walked out to warm up 10 mins after Bayern and appeared ‘very relaxed’ before being thumped 8-2

THOMAS MULLER has hinted that Bayern Munich’s 8-2 demolition of Barcelona was aided by the Spanish side’s “very relaxed” warm up.
Bayern made mincemeat of their Champions League quarter-final opponents earlier this month before beating Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain to win the competition.

    2

Thomas Muller claims Barcelona had a ‘relaxed’ warm up before their 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich
Muller, 30, scored twice in the thrashing of Barcelona, with Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho also netting.
Muller has now opened up about Bayern’s famous evening in Portugal.
And he says Barca’s laid-back attitude, which saw them warm up ten minutes AFTER Bayern took to the field, may have played some part.
Muller said: “I congratulate our coach (Hansi Flick).

“Just one example: We had been warming up for ten minute when Barcelona walked out onto the field to warm up.
“They were very relaxed. That doesn’t have to mean anything.
“The match could have ended differently, but I think it turned out that we were very hungry.”
The fallout from Barcelona’s defeat has been catastrophic, with boss Quique Setien and director of football Eric Abidal both sacked.

    2

But the biggest loss looks set to be club legend Lionel Messi, who has handed in a transfer request.
Manchester City are favourites to sign the Argentine forward, considered by some to be the greatest player in history.
And Muller reckons football will become more interesting if Messi ends up at a new club.
However, the World Cup winner joked that Bayern are unlikely to make a move despite his own personal pleas.
Muller added: “Messi is one of the best players on the planet, also in the last 100 years.

“A change may be interesting for the world of football, except for Barcelona fans.
“Nobody is critical of this. On the contrary, I am curious to see what his new path would bring.
“I’ve talked to our CFO a couple of times and I don’t think we can do anything about it.”

Five clubs Lionel Messi could join including Man Utd, City and Chelsea after handing in Barcelona transfer request

LIONEL MESSI is on the verge of quitting Barcelona after requesting to leave his boyhood club.
The 33-year-old Nou Camp legend demanded Barca exercise a clause in his contract that would allow him to quit for nothing with immediate effect.

But the Spanish giants believe the stipulation expired expired on June 10, with the Argentine superstar under contract until the summer of 2021.
Club and player seem set for a legal battle over the clause, with Barcelona believing his €700m (£629m) buy-out clause is still valid.
And with wages totalling £1.15m per week – it leaves very few teams capable of facilitating a move for Messi – here SunSport list five possible options.
    MANCHESTER CITY
Since Pep Guardiola – who managed Messi for four seasons – took over at the Etihad in 2016, he has spent £700m on transfers.

It indicates they have the backing to pull off a mega-money transfer for Messi, despite escaping a Financial Fair Play penalty this year.
Acccording to Radio Catalunya, Messi has already spoken to Guardiola about a move to Manchester.
And having grown frustrated throughout last season, reuniting with a familiar face could convince the forward to choose City.

    PSG
The French champions, like City, seem to have no limits when it comes to the transfer market.
Having already broke the record when they signed Neymar for £198m from Barca three years ago, PSG are not afraid to role the dice and break the bank.
It has been claimed Messi is open to linking up with strike partner Neymar again, with the Ligue 1 kings desperate to win the Champions League.
But Messi’s £64m-a-year basic wages could prove to be a problem even for PSG, who pay £33m to Neymar and £19m to Kylian Mbappe every season.

    4

It has been claimed Messi is open to linking up with strike partner Neymar again
    MANCHESTER UNITED
United have reportedly not wasted any time in making contact with Messi’s representatives regarding a transfer.
That is despite the fact they have so far failed to stump up the cash for Jadon Sancho – who Borussia Dortmund value at £108m.
Messi is also said to prefer a move to Manchester rivals City or PSG over United.
But SPORT, say Old Trafford bosses are confident they have the funds to pursue the sensation move.

    4

    CHELSEA
The Blues looked disinterested in tempting Messi to London – until Rio Ferdinand tweeted news that Frank Lampard was in for the Argentine.
Chelsea last season completed deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner and have carried over the spending to this season.
They are close to wrapping up transfers for Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell – while also testing the market for a keeper.
Making a swoop for Messi at this time seems unlikely, even if they do raise funds from money made by flogging unwanted flops.

    INTER MILAN
Throughout Messi’s Barca turmoil this year, Serie A giants Inter Milan are understood to have been monitoring the situation
Their former owner Massimo Moratti even revealed the club will plan to prize the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to Italy.
Inter have the backing of Chinese chairman Steven Zhang, son of billionaire Zhang Jindong.
Messi’s dad is also believed to have a home in Milan, fuelling speculation his son could be plotting a switch to the San Siro.

Bayern’s Treble-winning manager Flick earns less than £7.5m-a-year Man Utd boss Solskjaer and not even half Jose’s pay

LESS than a year ago, Hansi Flick had never managed Bayern Munich – but he now stands over a stunning treble with a £7.2million pay packet.
The German’s remarkable rise from unemployed ex-Hoffenheim boss to one of the world’s top coaches has taken place over the course of a single season.

    1

Hansi Flick guided Bayern Munich to treble glory despite only being given the caretaker role in NovemberCredit: Reuters
Niko Kovac brought in ex-midfielder Flick in July 2019 to help push Bayern on after the Croat’s stuttering but ultimately successful first year in charge.
With eight years as Joachim Low’s assistant under his belt before becoming German FA sporting director, his reputation was already considerable.
But, when Kovac was dismissed in November and his right-hand man lost two of his first four games as caretaker, few predicted what was about to unfold.
Munich were already impressed enough to award Flick a three-year deal in April, worth £7.2m according to Bild, amid speculation Mauricio Pochettino could take over long-term.

Flick hasn’t tasted defeat since a December 7 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach and swept his side to the Bundesliga crown via 13-straight wins.
The second part of the treble was bagged with a comprehensive victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal final.

And the Champions League title rounded off a stunning season, dispatching Barcelona 8-2 alongside comfortable wins over Chelsea and Lyon. A Kingsley Coman header then secured victory in the final.
Flick’s wage is far from inconsiderable but is miles behind one of his Bayern predecessors, Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester City coach has been unable to deliver the European crown to Eastlands having failed to do so in Bavaria, yet earns £20m-a-year.
Champions Liverpool pay £15m for coach Jurgen Klopp, the same as Tottenham’s Jose Mourinho.

In fact, Flick is behind big spenders Everton and Leicester, where Carlo Ancelotti bags £11.5m-a-year and Brendan Rodgers is on £10m.
Even newly-promoted Leeds pay more for their coach than the treble winners, with Marcelo Bielsa set to be on £8m per season having ended their top-flight exile.
Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s similar status as a relatively untested coach at a big club puts him on a similar pay bracket as Flick, on £7.5m-a-year.

Bayern ground out a 1-0 win in Lisbon thanks to Kingsley Coman’s second-half header.
The German giants had Kylian Mbappe’s sloppy finishing and some great saves from Manuel Neuer to thank for surviving with a clean sheet.
And they deservedly let their hair down after claiming the club’s sixth European Cup.

In footage posted on Thiago Alcantara’s Instagram, Canadian Davies is seen draped in his national flag on a dance floor doing a solo jig.

The outstanding 19-year-old was also seen apparently napping with the trophy after it all caught up with him.
Before that he had uploaded a video to his own Instagram story, celebrating the fact that global music superstar Drake has started following him.
In other footage posted on Bayern’s official Twitter account, the entire squad were up on stage belting out a peculiar song together.
The lyrics “FC Bayern, forever number one” were blasted out by the victorious players as they swayed from side to side with their arms around each other.

Matchwinning goalkeeper Neuer uploaded a shot of the trophy sitting in the middle of the dancefloor.
And later Polish striker Robert Lewandowski posted a hilarious shot of him with the trophy next to him in bed.
He captioned it: “Woke up like this.”
Elsewhere, Thiago Alcantara’s wife Julia Vigas posted photos from the night out with Philippe Coutinho’s partner Aine.
And Thomas Muller’s wife Lisa also shared a cute picture of the couple in bed later in the evening.

Bayern’s ecstatic celebrations were in stark contrast to PSG’s post-match reactions.
Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera said it was “s***” in his x-rated post-match rant.
And Brazilian forward Neymar was pictured in floods of tears after the final whistle.

Watch Carragher hilariously ‘translate’ Lewandowski’s Polish interview… claiming he hit out at Klopp and Lukaku

JAMIE CARRAGHER put his school Polish lessons to good use when he hilariously tried to translate Robert Lewandowski’s post-match interview.
The former Liverpool centre-back was working as a Champions League final pundit and joked that the Bayern striker hit out at Jurgen Klopp and said he was better than Romelu Lukaku.

Lewandowski was speaking after his side’s Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain.
Kingsley Coman’s second-half header was enough to separate the teams in Lisbon.
And Bayern’s star striker was ecstatic after the final whistle.

Carragher was working as a pundit for American network CBS when presenter Kate Abdo asked him him about his Polish lessons at school.

The 42-year-old insisted he only “took” Polish rather than actually “learned” it but agreed to give the translation a crack nonetheless.
Lewandowski could be heard talking to an interviewer in his native language.
And back in the studio, Carragher “translated”: “Best feeling of his life.
“Can’t believe it’s happened after losing the last final. This time he’s won it.

“He blames Klopp for that. Just disappointed he never got on the scoresheet, he feels that may have got him the Ballon d’Or, something he missed out on.

“I think this proves I am the best number nine and not Lukaku.”
On hearing the last sentence, his fellow studio guests – including Lukaku’s Belgium manager Roberto Martinez – burst into laughter.
Martinez chipped in and said: “He was convincing up to that point.”
Lewandowski was later pictured in bed with the Champions League trophy.
And the images came after Bayern’s players and Wags partied into the night after winning the clubs sixth European Cup.
