Champions League draw simulated with Man Utd and Chelsea in nightmare groups but easy rides for Liverpool and Man City

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea have been dealt nightmare Champions League groups but Liverpool and Man City get easy rides.
That is according to a Champions League simulator that SunSport ran to find out what could happen in tomorrow’s draw.

    5

Is Solskjaer in for a tough ride in the Champions League this season?Credit: PA:Press Association

And it’s not good news for two of the four English sides in Europe’s top competition.

Chelsea – in Pot 2 along with Man Utd and City – get the toughest assignment of the lot.
From the top tier they are drawn against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Serie A-winning Juventus side.

From Pot 3 they got Germans RB Leipzig – who sold Timo Werner to the Blues this summer.
And from the bottom group they drew current Ligue 1 leaders Rennes, who also let Edouard Mendy join the Stamford Bridge outfit.
Truth be told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side get a slightly easier task – but not by much.
From the top tier they get the attacking force that is Paris Saint-Germain – last season’s beaten finalists.

Inter Milan are drawn from Pot 3 – where Solskjaer will come up against former Old Trafford striker Romelu Lukaku as well as ex-captain Ashley Young, not to mention Tottenham’s former creative dynamo Christian Eriksen.

    5

Would you fancy Chelsea to make it out of this group?

    5

Have Man Utd got what it takes to advance from this group?

    5

Here’s how the simulated draw played out in full

The only respite appears to be in the final member of the group – Hungarian side Ferencvaros.
Jurgen Klopp’s reigning Premier League champions – the only English team in Pot 1 – would fancy themselves to go all the way to the final again anyway.
But if they get a draw like this they will be licking their chops.
Ajax look nothing like the team that lost to Spurs in the semi-final two seasons ago.

And they have said goodbye to Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek to Chelsea and Man Utd respectively, while also selling Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus and Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona.
You would think Russian side Krasnodar and Germany’s Monchengladbach would pose little trouble to Klopp’s high-pressing, mega intense stars.
Similarly, Pep Guardiola would fancy his Man City team’s chances of finally ending their European curse with their draw.
Europa League specialists Sevilla were picked out of Pot 1, with Italy’s Lazio from Pot 3 and French side Marseille from the bottom group.

Man Utd could land Champions League group of death against PSG, Inter Milan and Monchengladbach when draw is made

MANCHESTER UNITED could have all their worst dreams come true when the Champions League draw is made tomorrow.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will be in Pot 2 alongside fellow English teams Man City and Chelsea.

Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool are in the top seeded group.
And it is from Pot 1 that United and their dodgy defence could face the thrilling attacking force of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and ex-Red Angel Di Maria.
The Ligue 1 trio – part of the team that lost last season’s Champions League final to Bayern Munich – score goals for fun.
Although, to be fair, even Brighton looked like doing that in their recent 3-2 loss to United.

But would you fancy Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Co being able to thwart the Parisian triple threat?
United got the better of PSG on away goals when they met two seasons ago with a memorable 3-1 win in the French capital.
They might need something similarly miraculous this time.
Frighteningly, some might argue PSG aren’t even the toughest side, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus also sitting in Pot 1, alongside reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Sevilla, Real Madrid and Zenit St Petersburg are also possible top-seed opponents.

Below them, United could be given a nightmarish draw with Inter Milan from Pot 3 and Monchengladbach from Pot 4.
Romelu Lukaku has so far proved for Antonio Conte the goalscoring machine United hoped he would be.
And the attacking prowess of former United captain Ashley Young plus Ivan Perisic and Christian Eriksen could give Solskjaer huge cause for concern.

As for Monchengladbach in Pot 4, they look to be improving under Marco Rose and could spring a major surprise.
The Champions League does not start until October 20 as a result of the pandemic and delayed season starts across Europe.
But teams are set to have to play six fiercely competitive European ties during the most congested season in history – possibly complicating their Premier League ambitions as well.

Chelsea face Champions League group of death draw with Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Rennes possible opponents

CHELSEA could be handed a nightmare ‘group of death’ when the Champions League draw is made tomorrow.
Frank Lampard’s side are with Man Utd and Man City in Pot 2 while Premier League champions Liverpool fill out the English contingent in the top group.

And it is from Pot 1 where the Blues will be looking to avoid one team in particular.
Chelsea have good memories of beating Bayern Munich on their own turf to lift the European title in 2012.
But surely no one would fancy taking on the reigning champs in their current rampant form.
The 8-2 demolition job of Barcelona – over one leg, remember – in the summer is still fresh in everyone’s memory.

And though that came against a club in crisis, the threat Robert Lewandowski – surely robbed of the Ballon d’Or this year – and Thomas Muller perpetually pose makes them the ones to avoid.
Further down in Pot 3, Inter Milan’s team of stars under Antonio Conte – up against his old club – could prove difficult.
And below them again in the bottom pot lie current Ligue 1 leaders Rennes.
The French team’s ex-goalkeeper Edouard Mendy recently joined Lampard’s side so he should know how to handle them.

Saying that though, Rennes have started off unbeaten this season with four wins from five games and 12 goals scored already.
This season will test teams’ fitness levels and squad depth like never before.
So it’s a good job Lampard has been so busy this summer, signing seven players in all.
The Champions League does not start until October 20 as a result of the pandemic and delayed season starts across Europe.
But teams are set to have to play six fiercely competitive European ties during the most congested season in history – possibly complicating their Premier League ambitions as well.

Bayern Munich 2 Sevilla 1: Martinez clinches Super Cup triumph in extra-time after Goretkza cancels out Ocampos penalty

JAVI MARTINEZ was Bayern Munich’s unlikely hero in the Uefa Super Cup.
Seven years after scoring another extra-time goal to help Bayern clinch their last title, the Spaniard came off the bench to head in a 104th-minute winner against Sevilla in Budapest.

Sevilla led after just 13 minutes when Lucas Ocampos sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way from the penalty spot.
English ref Anthony Taylor penalised David Alaba for a body charge on Ivan Rakitic, who was making his second debut for the LaLiga side after returning from Barcelona this summer.
But Leon Goretzka levelled things up 11 minutes before the break, volleying home in expert fashion from Robert Lewandowski’s deft touch.
Sevilla should have won the game at the end of normal time when Youssef En-Nesyri raced clear, only for Neuer to make a huge one-on-one save – one of two critical saves the German made to deny the same player.

A goalless second half meant an extra half an hour was played and Martinez – who could be about to leave the Allianz Arena – pounced barely five minutes after coming on.
Sevilla stopper Yassine Bounou parried Alaba’s strike but directly for Martinez, who planted his header out of the Moroccan’s reach.
And the Champions League winners held on for victory.
Bayern are now unbeaten in 32 consecutive matches – dating back to December 7, 2019.

And it also means they have completed a sensational quadruple by adding the Super Cup to their Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup triumphs.
The win will be even more special after being able to celebrate in front of some of their own fans.
Some 15,000 supporters – including 3,000 from each club – were allowed into Budapest’s Puskas Arena with the game seen as a test event for the gradual return of fans to European games.

Mourinho reveals saddest moment of career was Bayern loss for Real Madrid after Cristiano Ronaldo penalty miss

JOSE MOURINHO has revealed the only time he shed tears after a defeat was when Real Madrid lost on penalties to Bayern Munich back in 2012.
The Portuguese had already steered Los Blancos to a record-setting year in LaLiga but was denied the chance to make it a Champions League double against the Germans.

Madrid were the heavy favourites for Europe’s top competition having overhauled Barcelona domestically with the most points, goals and home wins.
But Mourinho, who had already lifted the Champions League twice with Porto and Inter Milan, missed out on a three-piece at the Bernabeu.
The Special One saw Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos miss from the spot as Madrid fell to Bayern on penalties in the 2012 semi-finals.
He would have met his former side Chelsea in the final, who in turn, bested the Bundesliga side in a shootout to win their first-ever Champions League on penalties.

That night is the only time in my career as a coach that I’ve cried after a defeat. It was very hard because we were the best that season
    Jose Mourinho

And speaking to Spanish outlet MARCA, Mourinho admitted he found it hard losing the chance to play for La Decima and was reduced to tears.
He said: “Unfortunately, that’s football. Cristiano, Kaka, Sergio Ramos… three complete monsters of football, there’s no doubt about that, but they’re also human.
“That night is the only time in my career as a coach that I’ve cried after a defeat. I remember it well… Aitor [Karanka] and I pulled up in front of my house, in the car, crying…
“It was very hard because we were the best that season.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was denied from the spot as Los Blancos suffered defeat at the BernabeuCredit: AFP
Opening up about the incident further in an interview with Portuguese TV channel Sic, Mourinho admitted it was still the saddest moment of his career.
He said: “If I have to choose the worst moment, it’s that elimination with Real Madrid.
“We were the best team in Europe, without a doubt, we won LaLiga smashing all the records for points and goals and we would’ve won that final, I don’t have any doubt.
“What was most cruel for me was that in the shoot-out we chose Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos, they were dead certs from the penalty spot and the guys who missed were those who never miss, it sunk me.”

SunSport previously revealed that it was the Chelsea dressing room who broke down in tears after Mourinho was sacked in 2007.
Club captain John Terry said he and his team-mates were so devastated and shocked they approached the Blues board to reverse their decision.
The former England skipper would be reunited Mourinho in 2013 with the pair winning the Premier League for a third time two years later.

Jerome Boateng reveals he dyed his hair purple after betting AGAINST Bayern Munich winning Champions League

JEROME BOATENG revealed he dyed his hair purple after betting against Bayern Munich winning the Champions League.
The German defender collected his second European Cup winners medal last month following the Bavarian’s 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Uefa made the decision to hold the Champions League in a 12-day last eight mini-tournament.
And Bayern proved dominant in Portugal, beating Chelsea 7-1 on aggregate before thrashing Barcelona 8-2 and putting three past Lyon.
Such displays seemed unlikely when Niko Kovac was sacked in November last year following a 5-1 drubbing by Eintracht Frankfurt.
Boateng himself has now admitted he didn’t expect to taste victory in Lisbon and made a bet with a friend beforehand that he’s dye his hair if they did.

I was so surprised by it and I agreed directly. I can live with it if I dye my hair for such a good reason
Jerome Boateng on his Champions League bet

He told SportBILD: “He said he was sure we were going to win and he was betting on it.
“If we win, I’ll have to dye my hair purple. If not, he would do it immediately.
“I was so surprised by it and I agreed directly. I can live with it if I dye my hair for such a good reason.”
Boateng has been linked with a move away from Munich set to run out in summer 2021.

Bayern almost flogged the German ace in January, when Arsenal were said to be keen on a deal, but he stayed put to provide back-up in defence.
The Gunners were also reportedly reluctant to seal a deal due to concerns over his fitness and £196,000-a-week wages.
Boateng has since revealed he is open to returning to the Premier League following a short stint with Manchester City back in 2010.
