Chelsea to train in Russia before Krasnodar clash despite coronavirus fears and ‘reports bodies piling up in morgues’

CHELSEA will reportedly train in Russia ahead of their Champions League clash with Krasnodar despite concerns over coronavirus in the country.
The Mail cites reports from Russia claiming that some cities are seeing ‘bodies pile up in morgues’.

Indeed, German outlet Bild claims Bayern Munich have opted against training in Russia ahead of their clash with Lokomotiv Moscow tomorrow.
That means they will hold a final training session at their base in Germany before jetting to Russia’s capital for just the game.
However, it’s claimed Chelsea intend to fly out on Tuesday for their match, which kicks off at 5.55pm GMT the following day on Wednesday.

Frank Lampard’s men will apparently take off at 9.30am from London, travelling the five hours to south-west Russia on a chartered flight.

The Blues will arrive in the early evening and head straight to Krasnodar’s stadium for a late training session.
They will then return to their hotel before the game the following day.
It’s added that Chelsea officials have already inspected Krasnodar’s ground, as well as the hotel.
And they are apparently ‘satisfied’ that everything is in line with Uefa’s Covid-19 protocols.

Chelsea would usually train at Cobham before a European night, but the time difference and early kick-off saw them forced into the change of plans.
However, there are fears that Russia’s coronavirus problem is starting to spiral.
There were 17,347 new cases reported on Monday, taking the country’s total to 1,531,224.
But whereas Moscow has reported nearly 300,000 cases, resulting in Bayern’s decision to avoid training there, there have been 13,790 reported in Krasnodar.
The Russians drew 1-1 in their first group stage game away to Rennes, with Chelsea drawing a blank with Sevilla at Stamford Bridge.
Both sides will be looking for a win to gain a foothold in Group E as the games come thick and fast.

European Super League would be ‘closed shop’ for clubs like Midtjylland if Man Utd and Liverpool got way, says chairman

A TOWN in central Denmark provides the unlikely opposition for Liverpool in the Champions League group stages tomorrow.
Yet officials of Herning-based FC Midtjylland fear it is a certainty that European football will become a closed shop with small clubs blocked from taking part against the big boys.

FC Midtjylland were formed in 1999 when two rival clubs, Ikast FC and Herning Fremad, controversially merged.
Brentford owner Matthew Benham bought the club six years ago and this is the Danish champions’ first appearance in the Champions League group stages.
Chairman Rasmus Ankersen said: “I think Midtjylland is a good example of the importance of keeping the dream alive for small clubs.
“I’ve been taking part in all these European Club Association meetings in the past few years, where all the conversations are what the future is going to look like in European football.

“Unfortunately, the way it’s going, there’s going to be some reforms coming up in the next few years that will move football towards becoming more of a closed League for the big teams.
“But I think it’s really important for football that it can be a fairytale. That it is actually possible for a team like Midtjylland, from a small town with 50,000 people in the middle of nowhere in the west of Denmark, to go and play on the biggest stage.
“So I hope that opportunity will still be kept alive for us, and other teams in similar positions, but I think it’s going to be more and more difficult.”
Midtyjlland, who beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Europa League knockout stages four years ago before losing the second leg 5-1, crashed 4-0 at home to Atalanta in their opening Champions League group stage game.

Ankersen, 37, also Brentford’s director of football, admits Midtjytlland must find different ways of punching above their weight.
The club were the first to employ specialist throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark, who was then used by Liverpool last season.
Ankersen said: “You just have to look at the way the Champions League money is distributed. Already, before the first kick-off, there is a big difference between the amount we are receiving within the Champions League, and obviously that becomes a reinforcing thing. The rich get richer.
“So David had to beat Goliath by using different weapons, having a different strategy, being more innovative.
“Often the innovation does not necessarily come from the big clubs, it comes from the small club because the big clubs are not prepared to take enough risks. They have too much to lose. I actually think Liverpool have gone against that because they are a big club and they have been really trying to adopt a different way of doing things.”
“I think that paid off for them massively. Big kudos to them for that. It has been very much the way Midtjylland has done things.
“The throw-in coach is a good example of that. We felt like it was a really important part of the game, but very few clubs dedicate enough time to it.
“We have worked a little bit with meditation but not as something that gives us a competitive edge. We have a sleep coach who helps players optimise sleep. That is still underrated within elite sports.

Louis van Gaal’s Man United were humiliated by FC Midtjylland in the Europa League in 2016Credit: Getty Images – Getty
“We have a ball-striking coach who works with the guys’ output on direct free-kicks, but just in general. It is like in golf where players work with their swing.
“Why don’t footballers do the same with how they strike the ball? In the set-pieces, we take a lot of inspiration from American football and how they have playbooks.
“Why can’t a footballer not remember 10 set piece corner combinations? American football has a lot of stop-start combinations you can compare to football. So we try to optimise that.”

Meanwhile, the trip to Anfield will be a big one for Midtjylland kitman Jorgen Kjaer, whose son, Simon, is Denmark’s captain and plays in defence for Milan.
Ankersen added: “Our kit room is only Liverpool because he is a massive Liverpool fan. There are a few Midtjylland shirts in there but there are Liverpool shirts all over the kit room.
“He cried when he saw the draw here because this is obviously a very, very big thing for him to go to Anfield. A lot of people in Denmark in our area have two clubs they support and that’s Midtjylland and Liverpool.”

Real Madrid fans worried over Isco weight after being spotted in training looking out-of-shape after Hazard troubles

REAL MADRID fans have been left worried and bemused after pictures emerged of Isco in training looking out of shape.
The star was left out of the weekend’s 3-1 El Clasico win after limited action this season.

And the images, which have stunned some Real Madrid fans, perhaps go some way to explaining why.
Supporters were left questioning his physical state, with the 28-year-old looking podgy and scruffy in training pics.
The Spaniard appeared a long way from the fit athlete he was a few years ago, when he was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Isco has been limited to only 148 minutes of on-field action this season and fans are concerned they may not see much more of him in the near future.

His manager, Zinedine Zidane, when asked about the midfielder after Madrid lost to Cadiz last week, mostly sidestepped the question.
He said: “We are all in the same boat and criticism makes us stronger. We know we are Madrid and there is criticism after a game like the one the other day.
“We can only get back to work. The good thing is that there is a game every three days. We deserved the criticism the other day, and me before anyone – not just the players, they fight.
“We want to change the dynamics. I have no doubts about anything.

“The other day was a bad day, we want to change things, Isco more than anyone, I have no doubts.”

Isco not looking fit man.. I still believe in him but he gotta turn it around. I have a feeling he’s going to be needed heavily later on in the season.

Isco was substituted at half time during that game and did not appear in the victory against Barcelona or in the shock defeat against Shakhtar in the Champions League.
Social media users were quick to jump on Isco’s new look.
One posted that they suspected Isco was eating McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Another said they still believed in him but he ‘gotta turn it around.’
The Real Madrid man’s transformation is similar to Eden Hazard’s infamous weight gain.
Following his move from Chelsea, some fans blasted him piling on a couple of pounds during the summer.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo play against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and when will the Juventus star’s coronavirus test happen?

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S return for Juventus in their massive Champions League tie against Barcelona is up in the air as he awaits the results of a THIRD Covid-19 test.
Ronaldo sat out the 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona on Sunday after being told to self isolate because of a positive coronavirus test while on international duty.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was also unable to face Dynamo Kiev last Tuesday and his participation in this week’s Champions League game with Barcelona is also in doubt.
Why isn’t Cristiano Ronaldo playing for Juventus?
Ronaldo played for Portugal in their draw with France during the international break and was expected to feature against Sweden.
But the former Man Utd and Real Madrid star returned a positive test for Covid-19 and left Portugal’s training camp.
He is currently self isolating and has reportedly displayed no symptoms.

It has also been revealed Ronaldo has been sleeping separately from partner Georgina Rodriguez and his four children while isolating.

Ronaldo travelled from Portugal to Turin on a private air ambulance – but hit back at suggestions he’s broken protocol in the process.
CR7 said: “I did not break any protocol.
“They’re saying that I broke Italian laws but it’s all a lie.

“I spoke with my team and we have the responsibility to do things right.
“Everything was done with authorisation. Principally for the Italian man (Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadaforo) whose name I’m not going to say, it’s a lie, I abided by all the protocols.”

When will he return to action?
Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-awaited reunion with Barcelona and Lionel Messi could also be in doubt, after he returned a second negative test on Wednesday.
Ronaldo will now have one final test 24 hours before the match in the hope of being able to play.
If he tests positive again, he’s likely to make his Juventus return at Spezia on November 1.
Juve boss Andrea Pirlo said on Saturday: “As far as Cristiano Ronaldo is concerned, there has been no news. We await the results of the swabs.
“We did them this morning. He underwent the test at his home and if there is new news it will be communicated.”

Porto boss Sergio Conceicao slams ‘extremely unpleasant’ Pep Guardiola over Man City boss’ attitude and ‘ugly words’

PEP GUARDIOLA has been branded ‘extremely unpleasant’ by Porto boss Sergio Conceicao.
Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Porto in the Champions League was a bad-tempered affair which saw the coaches clash on the touchline more than once.

A number of decisions by referee Andris Treimanis split opinion and the Portuguese side were left feeling hard done by at the Etihad.
Conceicao told the media after his side’s defeat: “I’ve got a lot to learn from Pep Guardiola, in the way he pressures referees, talks to opposition players and opposition dugout.
“He’s a fantastic example. I have to learn this. We were angels compared to the other dugout.
“He spoke about our country using ugly words. Guardiola’s attitude was extremely unpleasant.

“The whole Manchester City dugout was because if anybody should have been complaining, it was the Porto bench, because we were extremely hard done by.
“I have to apologise to the referees in Portugal, because I complain when I think we are wronged, but comparing the officials of this game and those upstairs in the VAR, international referees have a lot to learn from ours in Portugal.”

Porto were left fuming at the incident which saw City awarded their equaliser.

Ilkay Gundogan appeared to land on goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin’s shin in the build-up to the home side winning a penalty, with Pepe’s barge on Raheem Sterling also questioned by Porto.
The former Real Madrid defender was also denied a spot-kick when tumbling under Joao Cancelo’s challenge.
And the two sides clashed late on after Fernandinho took exception to the Porto bench’s demands for Sterling to be booked.

The refereeing had a big bearing on the outcome of this match.
    Sergio Conceicao

Conceicao continued: “The refereeing had a big bearing on the outcome of this match. Marchesin has his leg in a bad state right now because he was fouled before the penalty award.
“At the end of the first half, Pepe is pushed in the back in City’s box, which should have been a penalty and the chance for us to go into the break leading.
“Finally, the foul that led to the 2-1 goal is no foul at all in my opinion.”
