Gary Lineker forced to pull out of BT Sport Champions League coverage on Wednesday after Covid scare with colleague

GARY LINEKER was forced to pull out of BT Sport’s Champions League coverage on Wednesday night amid a Covid scare. The 60-year-old had been due to analyse the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City from the BT Sport studios in Stratford, East London.

Massively disappointed not to be on @btsport tonight for such a great game. A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team. Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines, but it was decided to be ultra cautious & get tested before returning to work.— Gary Lineker 💙 (@GaryLineker) April 28, 2021

But he was forced to pull out at the last minute after a Covid scare.
Stand-in host Jake Humphrey revealed at the start of the broadcast: “There is no Gary Lineker tonight as unfortunately one of the team from last night has today had a positive Covid test result.
“As a precaution we have decided that no-one from yesterday’s team returns until they have been tested and declared completely safe to do so.”
Lineker also tweeted as the show began, writing: “Massively disappointed not to be on BT Sport tonight for such a great game.
“A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team.
“Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines, but it was decided to be ultra cautious & get tested before returning to work.”
He later put out another tweet with his feet up in front of a big screen, writing: “Well, this is different.”
The presenter was on air for Tuesday night’s coverage of the 1-1 draw between Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Current Covid rules mean anyone told by NHS Track and Trace they have come into contact with a person infected with Covid-19 should self-isolate for 10 days.
The England legend revealed he had the vaccine on Twitter, back in February, joking: “Had the vaccine and England Cricket lost Root & Stokes whilst I was getting jabbed. Nobody said anything about those side effects.”
The news comes after Lineker vowed to ‘never work on the European Super League’ as he blasted former club Barcelona for agreeing to the controversial plans.
The BBC and BT Sport pundit made it clear he would not be part of the ESL circus – which sent shockwaves throughout football last week.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “To be clear, if it actually happens, I will never work on this European Super League.”
The former England striker also took aim at old side Barcelona, where he scored 52 goals in 137 games.
Last week, all six English clubs quit the hated European Super League in a massive victory for fan power.
Chelsea were the first to break ranks after fans gathered outside their Stamford Bridge ground to voice their anger, with Manchester City following soon after.
Click here to follow all the action from Manchester City vs PSG

Then Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all announced they were quitting the project hours later.
Gary Lineker also hit out at Jurgen Klopp for being ‘spectacularly tone deaf’ over the European Super League fallout.
The Liverpool boss was asked his thoughts following the fierce backlash and collapse of the money-making farce – and said he believed pundits ought to “calm down.”
Lineker was far from impressed with Klopp’s reasoning and believes the fans have every right to continue making their voices heard.
He fired back on Twitter: “A handful of owners try to tear our game apart and may well try to do so again, and we’re just told to ‘calm down and move on’.
“Huge admirer of Klopp but he’s spectacularly tone deaf here.
“Without the fans of our beautiful game it would be much uglier today.”

Watch Phil Foden leave SIX PSG stars in his wake in electric dribble as Lescott says he is MORE important than De Bruyne

PHIL FODEN left SIX Paris Saint-Germain players in his wake with an exceptional dribble in the Parc des Princes. And Joleon Lescott hailed the Manchester City sensational as ‘more important than Kevin De Bruyne’.

Phil Foden produced a phenomenal dribble to shake off six Paris Saint-Germain playersCredit: PA
With 87 minutes on the clock in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, Ruben Dias dispossessed Neymar ten yards inside the PSG half.
Livewire Foden, 20, picked the ball up and had one thing on his mind.
Using his pace, balance and sublime close control, he skipped away from the tumbling Neymar as well as Danilo Pereira who missed his tackle.
Ander Herrera, Alessandro Florenzi, Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe all tried their best to stop the England star.
But none of them could get close enough to stop him bearing down on goal.
Foden did manage to get a shot away from 18 yards but could not direct his effort either side of Keylor Navas for what would have been a superb solo goal.
He had also fired straight at the PSG goalkeeper late on in the first half as City chased an equaliser.
Foden managed to get all three of his shots on target and had a 95 per cent pass accuracy while goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez ensured a 2-1 away win for Pep Guardiola’s men.

But even before his performance, the academy graduate was earning plenty of plaudits from the BT Sport pundits – with Lescott reckoning he is more crucial than his £300,000-a-week team-mate De Bruyne.
The ex-City defender said: “I would argue that Phil is the most important player in the team.
“In the club, you would say Kevin De Bruyne, he has got the contract to suggest that, but on current form and impact in games, Phil Foden for me is the most important player.
“He contributes so much to the team going forward, his energy, he leads the line with work-rate off the ball and his quality in possession is second to none.”
Owen Hargreaves reckons De Bruyne is still No1 but was quick to highlight Foden’s impact.
The two-time Champions League winner added: “I think anybody can see he is fabulous, his end product is so good.
“His effect on the game is remarkable, and 14 goals and nine assists for a young man is scary.
“He can obviously play in so many different positions. That is what he is great at, always checking his shoulder, and he has that little bit of magic in him.

“I think to the point now where you talk about the most important player in Manchester City’s team, it is Kevin De Bruyne I think.
“But I think Phil has earned right now to the point where Raheem Sterling is on the bench, that Phil Foden is the one they are looking to for the big goals – like he scored against Dortmund.”
Joe Hart joined in the praise and believes the Three Lions talent is playing football with complete freedom right now.
He said: “He is clean, his rhythm is good at the moment.
“Football can seem a really, really tough game at times, but he is definitely in a moment now where, when he is putting his boots on he is not thinking about anything else other than how he is going to affect the game and people getting him the ball.”
Marquinhos gave PSG the perfect start with his early header but City fought back in an impressive second half.
De Bruyne’s cross went all the way in before the hosts’ wall parted for Mahrez’s free-kick and Idrissa Gueye saw red all within 13 minutes.
PSG must score at least twice at the Etihad next Tuesday to have any chance of stopping Foden and City reaching the final.

    THAT’s ALL FOR TONIGHT
That’s all from me and the coverage of this Champions League first leg semi-final tie between PSG and Man City.
What a game of football it was and Man City have one foot in Istanbul! Can they go all the way and win it? Who knows.
Plenty of footy still to come this week starting with some Europa League semi-final action.
Man Utd are in action against Serie A outfit Roma, and Arsenal take on former boss Unai Emery who now manages Villarreal.
And then onto the weekend, there’s some Premier League action.
    Goodnight!
    PEP’s ASSESSMENT
Pep Guardiola told BT Sport: “Of course, we start really well after we concede the goal after we felt the pressure.
“Sometimes every player has to do more touches, every player do just one touch to put the ball out, but that’s normal.
“For a lot of people it’s our first time in the semi-finals and they want to do it well.
“The last 10 minutes of the first half was good, the second half excellent in every department.
“We scored two goals away which is so important. A hard job to do in six days.”
    CITY SLICKERS
PEP GUARDIOLA, his wealthy employers and of course, City’s fans, have waited a long time for this.
But surely, they are on their way to the Champions League final.
Any tournament which ends in Istanbul needs a famous recovery and City did exactly that last night as they pulled PSG’s pants down with two goals in the space of seven minutes.
This was stunning stuff from City. It was their 18th successive away win and by some distance, the finest of them all.
So impressive in the first half and leading with a goal from Marquinhos, PSG simply lost the plot and also their cool.

    DE BRUYNE’s THOUGHTS
Goal-scorer and Man City captain De Bruyne told BT Sport: “It was a game of two halves.
“We started well in the first ten minutes and had some control but they are an unbelievable team with great quality upfront.
“It was a shame the way we conceded. After 25 minutes we changed our press and it became better, and the second half was much, much better.
“The way the first goal goes in was a bit lucky but we played football and yeah, we did well there.
“The first half we were too rushed, and that’s not the way we are set up as a team.
“In the second half, we tried to find the spaces more patiently. The progression we made as a team was good.
“There is still a game to go, and we have to concentrate on that.
“We know there are moments when we will suffer, we know how good they are, but we know we have the quality to play good in the second game.”
    SECOND HALF CITY STORM
De Bruyne equalised for Man City, catching Navas out at the far post who was expecting Stones to get a touch on the ball.
    Vital away goal.

And then Mahrez stepped up and sent a free-kick through a small hole in the wall and into the bottom corner.
Navas caught out for both goals, but can’t be blamed for either.

    FULL-TIME STATS
Man City dominated the second half to give themselves a massive advantage heading into the second leg.

    FT: PSG 1-2 MAN CITY
Man City started the second half on the front foot and pinned last year’s finalists, PSG, inside their own half.
And City found themselves level with a slice of luck.
A Man City corner was worked across the edge of PSG’s penalty area to De Bruyne
The Belgian shifted the ball onto his right foot and delivered what looked like a cross toward the far post, catching out Navas to draw City level.
PSG looked a different team to the team that played so well in the first half.
And Parades conceded a sloppy free-kick in the 71st minute.
De Bruyne shaped up to shoot, but left it to Mahrez who bent the free-kick through the wall and into the bottom-left corner.
PSG lost all composure, and minutes later, Gueye was sent off for a reckless challenge on Gundogan.
Still all to play for in the second leg next Tuesday, but Man City have a massive, massive, two away goal advantage.

When is the Champions League final, and where is it being held?

The Champions League final will take place on Saturday, May 29.
The Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey will host the showpiece this season.
The kick-off time has yet to be decided, though it is expected to begin at 8pm BST.

Are English fans allowed to attend the Champions League final?

With the UK’s ban on non-essential international travel set to expire on May 17, Chelsea and/or Man City fans should be allowed to travel to Turkey for the match.
However, the Turkish government will decide if any tickets will be allocated to travelling supporters of the participating clubs.
Uefa have not placed any restrictions on ticket sales meaning Turkey is allowed to hold the game with any number of fans it chooses.
Coronavirus cases in Turkey remain high, meaning the country is likely to be on the amber list when travel resumes.
This would see fans from the UK forced to quarantine for ten days on their return and take a pre-departure Covid test plus PCR tests on Day 2 and Day 8 after landing.
There has not yet been any suggestion from the UK or Turkey that fans could avoid quarantine through a bubble arrangement.

The Ataturk Stadium plays host this year
    Can I get tickets?
UEFA have revealed in their latest update that details are to follow soon on how you can get tickets to the big one.
UEFA said: “The UEFA Champions League Final 2021 will take place in Istanbul, Turkey in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium on Saturday, 29 May 2021.
“Information about the ticket sales for this match (availability of tickets, application deadline, ticket prices, etc.) should be communicated around end of April 2021.
“More details will follow in due course.”

PSG 1 Man City 2: De Bruyne and Mahrez stun Parisians as Guardiola pips Pochettino to take huge stride towards final

It was their 18th successive away win and, by some distance, the finest of them all.
So impressive in the first half and leading with a goal from Marquinhos, PSG simply lost the plot and also their cool.
Kevin de Bruyne’s leveller was lucky, Riyad Mahrez’s strike was thanks to some shambolic defending and then former Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was deservedly sent off for a tackle on Ilkay Gundogan.
But here was the night that City, finally, proved they are not bottle jobs on the big occasion.
And if they do fall to pieces in the second leg – and on this performance it will not happen – Guardiola’s team will have only themselves to blame.
There were numerous heroes on the pitch for City in the second half but it was a special moment for Mahrez who was raised in Paris suburb Sarcelles – not far from the Parc des Princes.
And this was a classic type of away performance which you see from European powerhouses such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid who find a way of winning, even if not at their best.
And the most relieved man in European football will have been Guardiola whose Champions League results for City against teams from France – and also Mauricio Pochettino – have not been great.

And, much like two years ago, former Spurs boss Pochettino now needs his own miraculous comeback to reach the final.
Pochettino will be particularly frustrated as throughout the first half, his team were a cut above City and deserved their lead.
There was a warning for City within two minutes when Rodri forgot that losing the ball to Kylian Mbappe is a really bad idea.
Neymar could only manage a harmless shot at Ederson and then Brazilian then saw a deflected effort met with a decent save by his fellow countryman in the City goal.
Yet Ederson did not have a prayer to keep out a terrific glancing header from Marquinhos.
While it was a terrific run from Marquinhos, who charged past Ilkay Gundogan, it was all about the absolutely perfect corner from Angel di Maria.

The centre-back’s header put PSG in full control in the opening stagesCredit: PA
It was only the fourth goal City had conceded in the competition this season and they did well to avoid conceding another before half-time.
PSG keeper Keylor Navas, one of the club’s best players this season, delivered an unorthodox save to keep out a hooked effort from Bernardo Silva.
City’s players complained about the high boot Leandro Paredes used to clear a far post header from Foden
And Foden then should have done better before half-time when he hammered a shot straight at Navas when he should have stuck the shot into either corner.
But it was PSG who dazzled and delighted with their clever passing, brilliant movement and in fairness to defender John Stones and Ruben Dias, City’s central defenders actually did pretty well against such class.
City started the second half well and we even saw a smile on the face of Guardiola as he watched from the dug-out.
De Bruyne pulled one back with a shock long-range effortCredit: AP
Keylor Navas failed to deal with the effort in time as City found a way back inCredit: Getty
De Bruyne went close with an outrageous effort yet, while his bicycle effort was unsuccessful, his harmless-looking ball towards the far post gave City their big breakthrough.
PSG keeper Navas was expecting someone to get a touch – probably John Stones – but instead the ball drifted into the corner
And while City’s players celebrated and Guardiola jumped out of the dugout, one player who deserved real credit was Kyle Walker who delivered a stunning 60-yard run to force Marquinhos into conceding a corner.
Better was to follow. Foden won a free-kick and although De Bruyne looked certain to be the taker, City tricked PSG and it was Mahrez.
Presnel Kimpembe and Paredes delivered a comical effort at delivering a solid wall and Mahrez’s free-kick squeezed through the pair past a furious Navas.
Worse was to follow when Gueye went through the back of Gundogan and could have few complaints at being given a straight red.
Mahrez then put City ahead with an incredible free-kickCredit: Getty
City have two away goals going into next week’s second leg at the EtihadCredit: Reuters
And for the rest of the game, City just tormented PSG and made them look like an average Premier League side.
As referee Felix Brych blew the final whistle, Pochettino and his wounded troops will have been pleased to get off the pitch with only a 2-1 loss.
And then tells you everything you need to know about one of the best results in City’s history.
Uefa and their tournaments have never been a popular subject for the club’s fans. But maybe that is about to change.
Equally, this 90-minute of pure, brilliant, outstanding European football was a reminder that the Champions League can be bloody good competition.
And it proved beyond doubt the stupidity of City’s owners for wanting a breakaway European Super League.

Sergio Ramos ‘targeting return for Real Madrid’s second clash vs Chelsea in Champions League semi-final’

SERGIO RAMOS is reportedly targeting a return for Real Madrid’s trip to Chelsea next week. The Mail claims Los Blancos captain Ramos, 35, hopes to be back in the starting XI for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final clash.

Real and Chelsea drew 1-1 in last night’s first game, with Christian Pulisic’s opener pegged back by Karim Benzema’s equaliser.
Real need to score at Stamford Bridge or face crashing out on away goals.
But they look set to be handed a huge boost in the return of Ramos.
He has played just three times in 2021 after suffering knee and calf injuries.
Ramos, who has also had coronavirus this month, looked to be back in training this week.
And with a place in the Champions League final stake, he could now be in line for a return to Real’s starting XI in London.
Ramos has been at the Bernabeu since 2005, scoring 101 goals in 670 games.
He has won an incredible amount of trophies, including five LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues.

Ramos has also won an amazing 180 caps for Spain, and was a key figure in the Euro wins of 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2010 World Cup triumph.
However, Ramos’ time in the capital could be coming to an end this summer.
He is out of contract and it appears unlikely fresh terms will be agreed.
That’s led to a host of clubs entering the race for his signature, including Manchester United.

Real Madrid’s goal against Chelsea should NOT have counted, says referee expert after Casemiro ‘foul’ on Azpilicueta

REAL MADRID were fortunate to snatch an equaliser against Chelsea, according to one ex-referee who spotted a possible foul in the build-up.Karim Benzema expertly slammed the ball home during Tuesday night’s Champions League semi-final first leg.

But some onlookers felt the short corner routine that brought about the leveller featured a foul.
Marcelo’s cross was headed back across goal by Casemiro, who had beaten Cesar Azpilicueta in the air.
Eder Militao then flicked it on for Benzema to swivel and smash past Edouard Mendy.
It was Casemiro’s clash with Azpilicueta that was debated, most notably by Spanish former referee Andujar Oliver.
The 72-year-old, who officiated for 23 years and made his LaLiga debut in 1980, felt the Brazilian had illegally jumped against the Chelsea defender.
He told Marca: “Casemiro commits a foul on Azpilicueta before Militao heads to Benzema, who scores.”

THUNDEROUS FINISH! ⚡️Benzema smashes the ball home on the turn and volley. Such a clinical strike! Against the run of play Real Madrid are level… pic.twitter.com/byfE5d9wt6— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) April 27, 2021

Neither referee Danny Makkelie or VAR called the 29-year-old midfielder up, perhaps taking the opinion that he had simply out-jumped Azpilicueta.
The goal also came against the run of play after a confident start from Chelsea at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.
Following a bad Timo Werner miss, Christian Pulisic danced his way through the Madrid defence to score the opener.
And while the away-goal draw puts the Blues in a good position for next week’s return leg, coach Thomas Tuchel was left wanting more.

He said: “I think we started the game very, very well and very aggressive with a lot of courage and a lot of quality.
“We deserved to win the first-half, for me. We had a lot of chances, we had a lot of half chances where we missed precision in the last ball to have more opportunities to score.
“Unfortunately, they scored from a set-piece. There was nothing else normally to defend for us, we did not allow any chances so it was a bit of a disappointing result at half-time.”
Tuchel also confirmed his reason for substituting Azpilicueta, 31, shortly after the hour-mark was the full-back appearing ‘very tired’.
