Stats show Man Utd outran Basaksehir despite Van Persie’s claims Red Devils violated Fergie’s golden rule in loss

ROBIN VAN PERSIE claimed Manchester United broke Sir Alex Ferguson’s golden rule of running further than your opponents in their loss to Istanbul Basaksehir.
The former Dutch striker, 37, reckoned the Turkish side outran United – something that would’ve boiled Fergie’s blood – but the stats appeared to show otherwise.

Van Persie told BT Sport: “They missed the urgency to commit.
“In my time at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson said ‘I don’t mind losing as long as my team is not running less than the opponent and I want to see commitment going forward and as well defensively.’
“I’m pretty sure Basaksehir ran more than Manchester United. That should never be the case in any game.

“That has nothing to do with quality or abilities. That’s extra. You need to commit, to be there with 100 per cent focus.”
According to Uefa’s official data, United covered 108.6km in total compared to their Turkish opponents who ran 106.479km in the 90 minutes.
United also came out on top in both halves, despite going in at the break 2-1 down as former Chelsea ace Demba Ba found acres of space in the United backline.
The Red Devils ran 55.148km in the first period, edging out their hosts who covered 54.239km.

After the interval, the figures were again close but United topped the stats by just over 1km after running 53.452km to Istanbul’s 52.24km.

Here’s who Manchester United have signed since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down

The 2-1 defeat in Turkey heaped the pressure on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Bruno Fernandes gave the ball away an incredible 34 times as United put in a sloppy showing.
Former midfielder Paul Scholes slammed United’s ‘Under-10s’ defending for Ba’s goal.
Van Persie added: “I’ve never seen a goal conceded like that first goal – usually you leave two defenders at the back.”
The Red Devils are 15th in the Premier League and frustrated club chiefs have already reportedly contacted ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Solskjaer is the favourite to be the next Prem boss sacked, with Argentine Poch ODDS-ON to replace him.

Furious Rennes president brands referee of Chelsea clash ‘Man of the Match’ after controversially sending off Dalbert

FURIOUS Rennes president Nicolas Holveck has slammed the referee in charge of the club’s defeat to Chelsea.
His controversial decision-making swung the Champions League clash in favour of the Premier League side.

German ref Felix Zwayer has faced a backlash after a harsh yellow-card for handball against Dalbert – which saw the Brazilian concede a second penalty and get sent off.
Tammy Abraham’s close-range shot had deflected onto Dalbert’s raised arm, with the defender stood just inside the box.
After consulting VAR and the pitchside monitor, the referee pointed to the spot and then gave the hapless left-back his marching orders.
Pundits were left baffled and Rennes furious, with the president of the French club launching an attack on the ‘Man of the Match’ ref and asking why a handball appeal against Kurt Zouma at the other end was ignored.

Holveck told Telefoot via L’Equipe: “I am very proud of the coach (Julien Stephan). We should not be ashamed despite the score.”
“But there is more than disappointment, there is frustration. The man of the match was the referee.
“I would like them to explain to me the handball rules inside the box. If there is a handball from Dalbert while the ball has already touched his foot, what about the handball from Zouma? VAR wakes up for our [handball] but not theirs.
“And on top of that he gives a second yellow with that. We can be frustrated, more than frustrated. The result, it was the referee who made it.

“The match is killed at 2-0 while Alfred [Gomis, Rennes’ goalkeeper] has not had a save to make. We were certainly refereed like the newbie, and that is difficult to accept.

“You have less weight over the referee when you are Rennes than when you are Chelsea. When the referee has a good match, in general, you do not speak about him.
“But I think we are going to speak a lot about him this evening. Even the English media are unanimous in saying that it is a little scandal. Sleep will be hard to find.”
Pundits on BT Sport were left equally bemused by the sending off, which capped an awful night for Dalbert after he also gave away the first penalty when he clipped Timo Werner.
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand said: “This is an absolute disgrace. The kid doesn’t intentionally block the ball with his hands. The referee goes over to the screen, deliberates and still gives it. It baffles me.
“It’s a joke. It’s that close that he’s only going to block the ball with his feet.
“He ruined the game for me. I was absolutely flabbergasted. Then the red card topped it all off.”
The former defender added the incident had once again called into question the harshness of the handball law, which has come under scrutiny in recent weeks after causing chaos in the Premier League.
Ferdinand said: “We’re fortunate to go to a few games and we get to speak to some of the players after the game and a lot of the time I’m asking these players, ‘how are you dealing with these penalty decisions and the new rules that have come in?’

Werner was the beneficiary of the Dalbert’s penalty giveaways as he slotted home two goalsCredit: AP:Associated Press
“There hasn’t been one player who has said: ‘I’m totally fine with it.’ They’re all confused.”
“There are too many grey areas. A decision is made, the referee blows up, everyone’s in panic stations, heart rate’s going through the roof, because there’s so much uncertainty. I don’t think it’s great for the game.”
Ex-Chelsea favourite Joe Cole was left equally unsure about the decision-making.
He said: “How are you going to coach young defenders where to put your arms where you’re trying to defend because if you’re doing your job properly, you need to be athletic and stop the ball.
“Where are your arms supposed to go?
“It’s almost like Fifa and Uefa are trying to self-destruct. You’ve got this product that’s amazing, sells globally.
“All these rules that have come in, they’re trying to make it better, but sometimes you can’t improve on something that’s as good as football.”
The two penalties made it a comfortable night for Chelsea, with Werner – not Jorginho – converting both spot-kicks after being named the club’s new penalty taker.

Abraham wrapped up the scoring in the second-half when he tapped home a perfectly-delivered Reece James cross.

It means Chelsea have seven points out of a potential nine so far in their Champions League adventure, and are yet to concede in Europe.
In fact, last night they claimed their fifth clean sheet on the trot in all competitions and new goalkeeper Edouard Mendy – who missed the Blues’ 3-3 draw with Southampton – has now not conceded in six.
It’s a dramatic transformation for Frank Lampard’s side whose defence earlier in the season was causing huge concern for supporters.

Moment Chelsea star Jorginho hands Werner ball to take penalty as Lampard confirms German is new spot-kick taker

THIS is the moment that signalled a changing of the guard at Stamford Bridge.
Regular penalty-taker and vice-captain Jorginho, 28, handed the ball to star summer signing Timo Werner on boss Frank Lampard’s orders.

Chelsea’s Jorginho hands the ball to Timo Werner after the Blues were awarded a penalty
It could not have been a smoother passing of the baton as German ace Werner, 24, bagged TWO pens in the 3-0 Champions League win over Rennes.
Both spot-kicks came in the first-half as the Blues continued their unbeaten run in Europe and kept their fifth consecutive clean sheet with Edouard Mendy in goal against his old side.
Ex-RB Leipzig forward Werner smashed his first into the bottom left corner before sending his second the same way but high into the top corner of the net.

Former Napoli midfielder Jorginho has long been the No1 man from 12 yards and netted his first eight pens for the Blues.
But the Italian international has missed two in less than a month – against Liverpool and Krasnodar.
And after Chelsea won another pen out in Russia, Werner stepped up and buried his strike against Krasnodar.
Lampard had previously revealed he was toying with the idea of changing his penalty-taker.

And following Wednesday night’s win over Champions League debutants Rennes, he confirmed he had wielded the axe.

Lampard said: “I spoke with Jorginho first because he’s been brilliant taking penalties in his career and for us.
“And it has more been missing a couple recently that I felt it was time to have a change.
“And Jorgi’s answer was as professional as I would expect in terms of he only wants us to score.”
Chelsea’s second penalty was controversially awarded after Dalbert Henrique was shown a second yellow card for handball.
Despite profiting, Lampard admitted he wasn’t too happy about the application of the laws in Europe.

He added: “It probably goes along with the rules in the Champions League that the decision gets given today.
“I’m not sure… they are not the rules now that we are going by in the Premier League and I’m not completely happy with them.
“And if I was the manager of Rennes today then I wouldn’t have been happy with them either.
“It was one that worked in our favour today but I’m not mad on the rule itself.”

Frank Lampard says he will have a nice little talk with Jorginho but he still has confidence in him More

Bruno Fernandes gave ball away 34 times as Man Utd were humbled in Istanbul – FOUR TIMES more than Van de Beek

BRUNO FERNANDES struggled yet again for Manchester United on Wednesday as he gave the ball away a staggering 34 TIMES against Istanbul Basaksehir.
The 26-year-old played the whole game in Turkey as his side lost 2-1, while team-mate Donny van de Beek was hauled off after 61 minutes despite impressing.

Fernandes how now flattered to deceive against Chelsea, Arsenal and Istanbul, with the player arguably going through his worst spell at United.

So it came as a surprise to many Red Devils fans that it was Van de Beek who went off despite being more influential in Turkey.
The Dutch midfielder – who is yet to start in the Premier League – had an impressive pass accuracy of 93 per cent.

His team-mate Fernandes completed just 73.8 per cent of his passes, and he also had a lower pass completion in the final third of the pitch.
Just 63.5 per cent of his passes were successful, with Van de Beek’s rate considerable higher at 84.2 per cent.
Fernandes also lost possession a whopping 34 times – more than four times the amount that Van de Beek gave the ball away.
The ex-Ajax midfielder lost possession just eight times, while he created one chance during the disappointing defeat.

That is one more than what Fernandes achieved, as he failed to create anything despite being on the pitch for half an hour longer.

In addition to that, the former Sporting Lisbon maestro registered just one shot on target out of four attempts – a free-kick that was easily parries away.
None of his six crosses found a team-mate, while just seven out of his 14 long passes were successful.
Pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he knows he must beat Everton on Saturday to ease speculation over his future.
When asked about his position after United’s defeat to Istanbul, he said: “I decline to comment.
“It is early and opinions are out there all the time. I have got to stay strong.
“I am employed by the club to do a job and will do it to the best of my ability.”

Champions League 2021 winner predicted after just three games.. and Man Utd’s chances aren’t good after shock loss

MANCHESTER UNITED’S chances of winning the 2021 Champions League aren’t looking too clever after a shock 2-1 defeat away to Istanbul Basaksehir.
But who are the runners and riders three games into this season’s European competition?

Data crunched by FiveThirtyEight has reigning champs Bayern Munich as the hot favourites to be crowned kings of Europe again.
Hansi Flick’s side have a 26 per cent chance of winning the final at this stage.
After Wednesday night’s blip, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils can only lay claim to a three per cent chance of going all the way for the first time since 2008.

United had made a very assured start to their Champions League campaign, winning 2-1 away at Paris Saint-Germain.
Before super sub Marcus Rashford rattled in a hat-trick off the bench to help his side to a 5-0 thumping of RB Leipzig at Old Trafford last time out.
But former Chelsea man Demba Ba haunted United out in Turkey as he raced through all alone to score and get the upset underway after just 12 minutes.
Edin Visca doubled things after 40 minutes and the Turkish side held on despite Anthony Martial reducing the deficit just before half-time.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are second favourites to bag their first ever Champions League title.

The Citizens saw off Olympiacos 3-0 on Tuesday to continue their flawless record at the top of Group C.
Raheem Sterling and Co are in with a 17 per cent chance of finally going all the way to European glory.
Lionel Messi’s Barcelona have a ten per cent shot at glory with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, 2019 winners and 2018 runners-up, a seven per cent chance.
Diogo Jota’s hat-trick helped the Reds punish an out of sorts Atalanta 5-0 win which maintained their 100 per cent start in Group D.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are unbeaten in Group E but sit level on points with Sevilla and after Wednesday’s 3-0 win over Edouard Mendy’s old side Rennes, the Blues are considered four per cent outsiders.

Watch Dortmund star Haaland get asked if he’s taking a girlfriend home in ‘weirdest interview’ that baffles Carragher

BORUSSIA DORTMUND star Erling Haaland was seemingly quizzed about his sex life in an awkward post-match interview last night.
The striker scored two as his team defeated Club Brugge 3-0 in the Champions League.

Erling Haaland was involved in another bizarre interview last night

Jamie Carragher and his fellow pundits were left stunned after the awkward post-match interview

However, after failing to score a third and claim the matchball, the Norwegian was asked some unusual questions by a CBS reporter.
The journalist asked: “Are you going to sleep lonely tonight?”
    Haaland replied: “Erm… yeah.”
The interviewer then followed up by asking: “You’re not taking a girlfriend home right now, you didn’t score a hat-trick.”

The hotshot responded: “Didn’t score, no.”
And that led to the reporter finishing up by saying: “That was it, thank you.”

As the camera panned back to the studio, Jamie Carragher and his fellow pundits could not contain their amusement.
The ex-Liverpool defender said: “Jesus Christ, I thought we were all getting sacked!”

Former Manchester City star Micah Richards added: “I had no idea where that was going!”
However, maybe the interviewer’s questioning was not as weird as first thought.
Haaland said in November 2019 that he sleeps alongside his hat-trick match balls and described them as his ‘girlfriends’.
He said: “I sleep with the five balls for each hat-trick I have scored. I lie in bed and I feel good with them.
“I look at them every day. They are my girlfriends.”
His latest Champions League brace took his tally in the competition to 14 goals in 11 matches.

Sergio Ramos screamed ‘Get up you son of a b****’ at ex-Real Madrid team-mate Achraf Hakimi during win over Inter Milan

SERGIO RAMOS is alleged to have launched a foul-mouthed tirade at a former Real Madrid team-mate this week.
The incident involving the 34-year-old defender occurred during his side’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.

The Real legend allegedly called him a ‘Son of a b****’ after he tried to win a penalty

Real defeated the Serie A side 3-2 but Ramos was furious when opposition defender Achraf Hakimi, who came through the ranks at the Bernabeu, went down claiming a penalty.
The Madrid captain lost it with the Moroccan and he did not hold back in voicing his displeasure.
Spanish media claim he shouted: “’Get up you son of a b***h, get up! Stop screaming like a rat.”
Ramos then attempted to haul Hakimi, 22, back to his feet.

The pair were team-mates during the 2017-18 season, when Hakimi made 17 appearances for Real Madrid alongside Ramos.
However, the defender was packed off on loan and then eventually sold to Inter Milan.
    100 CLUB
Spain international Ramos had earlier scored his 100th goal for Los Blancos with a header to put his team two up.
After reaching a century, he said: “It’s not bad.

“Individual records are secondary, but you like hitting them and as long as they keep on helping the side win, hopefully I can get a few more.”
Ramos joined the Galacticos back in 2005 and has won 22 trophies during his time there.

He is out of contract at the end of the season but boss Zinedine Zidane believes he will remain in Madrid and add further honours to his CV.
ZZ said: “As always, he is our captain, our leader.
    “We want him here forever.
“I have no doubt that he will stay and continue to make history.”

Chelsea star Kai Havertz misses Champions League win over Rennes after testing positive for coronavirus

KAI HAVERTZ missed Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Rennes after the £70million star tested positive for coronavirus.

But Havertz missed the match after being diagnosed with Covid-19.
Before kick-off at Stamford Bridge, a club statement confirmed: “Frank Lampard has confirmed Kai Havertz has tested positive for Covid-19.
“As a consequence the player is now undergoing a period of self-isolation and is not involved in tonight’s Champions League game versus Rennes.”

Chelsea have not confirmed Havertz’s condition or if he is suffering any symptoms of the illness.
But he will also miss Saturday’s game with Sheffield United and the subsequent Nations League fixtures for Germany unless he can satisfy authorities that he is no longer infectious.

The attacking midfielder, 21, had only missed one game for his new team since signing for an initial £62million in September.
Blues boss Lampard had started Havertz in every game of the club’s campaign, bar the Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham.

Although he had managed just one goal in league and Europe, netting in last month’s draw with Southampton.
