How Chelsea could line up against Real Madrid as Tuchel gives injury update ahead of huge Champions League showdown

CHELSEA could welcome back captain Cesar Azpilicueta against Real Madrid after the defender tested negative for Covid-19.Thomas Tuchel confirmed the news in his press conference on Monday ahead of the trip to the Bernabeu.

But the German coach may not make too many changes to his team after Chelsea beat Southampton 6-0 on Saturday.
Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was blown away by the performance of Tuchel’s side and that may mean only one or two changes on Tuesday.
Romelu Lukaku will be missing once again due to an Achilles problem so Timo Werner will likely continue in attack.
He could start alongside Kai Havertz in a central role after scoring twice from that position on Saturday, with Mason Mount operating just behind the front two.

Alternatively, Tuchel may decide to play 3-4-3 and start Mount on the right with either Werner or Christian Pulisic on the left flank.
Tuchel’s other dilemma is whether to play Jorginho or Matteo Kovacic alongside N’Golo Kante in midfield.
What is almost certain is Chelsea will play with five at the back – Reece James likely replacing Ruben Loftus-Cheek at right wing-back despite the latter playing well there at St. Mary’s.

But this season there are BIG changes to how teams can go through in knockout stages of games.
Do away goals count in Champions League and Europa League matches?
Away goals have been a feature of European knockout games since 1965.
But this campaign things are going to be different.
After years of speculation, Uefa have finally decided to scrap the away goals rule this season in both Champions League and Europa League knockout games over two-legs.
As such, a tied aggregate score will now be the determining factor in sending a tie into extra-time.
Should the scores still be level after the extra 30 minutes, we go to penalties.
The law previously gave a significant advantage to sides who hit the back of the net on the road, but drew criticism from many fans.

Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin explained the decision: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years.
“Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.
“The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.
“There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.
“It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was.
“Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the Uefa Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home.”
It means Bayern Munich could be the last team ever knocked out of the Champions League on away goals when they drew 3-3 on aggregate with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
PSG won the first leg 3-2 and Bayern edged them 1-0 in the second but were knocked out due to the now defunct rule.
Are there extra time and penalties in the Champions League and Europa League if scores are tied?
Yes. If the aggregate scores are level after two 90-minute games, the match goes to extra time in the second leg.

THIBAUT COURTOIS has not forgotten his messy Chelsea exit, and the keeper knew Chelsea fans wouldn’t have either. So much so the Real Madrid man reportedly asked skipper Karim Benzema to switch ends for the start of the Champions League clash between the two sides last week.

The 29-year-old was desperate to play in front of the most hostile Chelsea fans in the Matthew Harding Stand for the first 45 minutes, according to The Athletic.
That meant he could put his feet up and relax after the break in front of the away fans at the other end of the pitch.
Chelsea fans have not forgiven Courtois for the way he forced a move from the club in 2018, and the keeper wanted to get the boos out of the way early doors.
As a former Chelsea player, he also knew the Blues prefer to attack The Matthew Harding Stand in the second half.

Courtois got his wish and unsurprisingly was loudly booed as he made his way to the goal in front of the angry Chelsea supporters.

For it seems that nothing gives Simeone more pleasure than upsetting the purists with his soccer cynicism.
Doubtless there will be some people who found Tuesday’s clash of cultures to be a fascinating tactical battle between two coaching grandmasters.
So, yes, there is more than one way to skin a cat. And who is to say that Pep Guardiola’s philosophy is any more effective than Simeone’s?
His approach clearly works, as proved by the fact that they won LaLiga last year and have knocked AC Milan, Porto and Manchester United out of this season’s Champions League.

Now they are looking to extend their run by overturning a 1-0 deficit against City at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

IT has been suggested that Wimbledon plan to ban Daniil Medvedev unless he denounces Vladimir Putin and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
I have no problem with barring all Russians from competing in international sport because we need to drive the message home to Moscow that they are the pariahs of the world.
But it is wrong to put pressure on individual athletes to make political statements which could jeopardise their family and friends back home.
Medvedev might well be appalled by the behaviour of his country’s government, just as many Brits are disgusted with ours.
The difference is that no one is going to be drinking polonium tea if they have a pop at Boris.

KARIM BENZEMA did not swap shirts with any of his Chelsea victims – and instead gave his special top to a Manchester United legend.The Real Madrid striker was at his absolute peak once again at Stamford Bridge last night.

That took his tally to a whopping six goals within less than 90 minutes of Champions League football – and put one Los Blancos foot into the semi-finals.
But after being subbed off for Gareth Bale late on, he did not exchange jerseys with any Blues stars after the full-time whistle.
Benzema did his media duties on the pitch and then spotted close pal and former France team-mate Patrice Evra.

Evra was there on TV punditry duties and was delighted to see the hat-trick hero.
And as Benzema collected the match ball and the man-of-the-match award, he did not return to Madrid with his shirt.
That is because he handed it over to Evra to keep.

Incredibly, Benzema had been fasting all day for Ramadan – although may have broken the fast at sunset at 7.47pm, 13 minutes before kick-off.
And the striker had a brief moment of panic as he tried to enter the stadium.
Benzema had misplaced his pass to get into the ground and boss Carlo Ancelotti joked he would be dropped if he could not find it.
Thankfully for everyone at Real Madrid – and Evra – the vintage veteran made his way in and caused havoc on the pitch.
