Midtjylland 1 Liverpool 1: Mo Salah breaks Steven Gerrard’s Euro scoring record but young Reds held in dead rubber

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD proved he is now a Liverpool senior statesman – at the grand old age of 22.
The England right-back skippered Liverpool for the first time in his career as the youngest Champions League team in the club’s history failed in their bid to end the group stages with a 100 per cent record.

Alexander Scholz bagged a second-half equaliser for the hostsCredit: Reuters

Incredibly, when you consider his age, Alexander-Arnold found himself paying tribute to the latest teenagers to arrive in Jurgen Klopp’s team following the draw in Denmark.
French defender Billy Koumetio became the youngest Liverpool player to feature in the Champions League or European Cup while 19-year-old midfielder Leighton Clarkson, who made a solid Euro debut, revealed that he considers Alexander-Arnold as one of the team’s old heads.
Mo Salah’s opening minute goal was cancelled out by a second half penalty from Alex Scholz in a game which spanned over 100 minutes due to the length of time being taken by VAR.
Fit-again Alexander-Arnold said: “To captain the team was an extremely proud moment for me. I have obviously got to say thanks to the manager and the staff who chose me to captain the team. I will look back on this fondly.

“It was good to see some more of the young players. We have so many coming through and it is encouraging to see. What they need to do is focus on themselves and keep learning from the players they are looking up to.
“The way they performed here was good. Leighton especially. We are in the Champions League knockout stages and now the fun starts.”
Blackborn-born Clarkson, 19, was the pick of the young players and expect to see him more over the coming months.
He said: “It is the stuff you dream of as a child, making your Champions League debut. I thought I did alright. It is good when you have help from the likes of Jordan Henderson and Trent advising you and telling you what to do.”

It was a tougher night for Koumetio who, at 18 years and 25 days, broke Liverpool’s Champions League record held by Antonio Barragan, who was 18 years and 59 days old when he turned out for the first-team in 2005.
Throw in Irish rookie keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and Rhys Williams and here was another remarkably inexperienced Reds team
Liverpool took just 55 seconds to take the lead when Salah seized onto a shocking backpass from Scholz, used his pace to carry the ball into the area and then toe-poked the ball through the legs of home keeper Jesper Hansen.
The goal was Salah’s 22nd for the Reds in Europe’s top club competition, overtaking Steven Gerrard, who scored 21 Champions League goals in his Liverpool career.
Fabinho cleared off the line to stop Sory Kaba from levelling and the emergency centre-back was then replaced at the break by Koumetio.

It was certainly a baptism of fire for the youngster and it was not ideal that he was playing alongside fellow rookie Willians.
Midtylland had several chances before equalising with a penalty thanks to some help off Liverpool’s old enemy, VAR.
Kelleher was penalised for a foul on Anders Dreyer even though it seemed as though the home player was offside with the linesman having flagged.
Scholz struck a decent penalty to level and then thought he had created a second but after more waiting due to VAR, Kaba was ruled offside.

Takumi Minamino thought he had struck a 90th minute winner but Liverpool were once again cursing VAR as, after a long wait, the goal was scrubbed out after the ball hit Sadio Mane’s arm.
Klopp said: “I liked the first half but in the second half we did not play football anymore. You can imagine.
“Having Trent as captain was a logical situation. Normally, we have Hendo (Henderson), Milly (Milner), Virgil (van Dijk) or Gini (Wijnaldum) as captains so it is then the player who has been longest at the club who gets the armband.
“Billy came on for us. Leighton played 90 minutes, Rhys played a good game, These things are all good, They help us but the driving forces need to be the other, more experienced guys.”

Benfica 0 Chelsea 5: Fran Kirby hits double to become Blues’ all-time top scorer in Champions League romp

RAMPANT Chelsea demolished Benfica in a FIVE goal romp – with Fran Kirby hitting twice to become the club’s all-time record scorer.
The Blues strike sensation has now found the net 70 times for the West Londoners, despite being dogged with injuries and illness for the past year.

It was a perfect day in the office for the Blues after they made it a 5-0 rout against Benfica the first-leg of the round of 32Credit: Getty Images – Getty

She stormed past Chelsea legend Eni Aluko’s tally of 68, even after being told she may never play football again due to a rare heart condition.
Millie Bright, Pernille Harder and Beth England also made the score-sheet with Guro Reiten adding three assists in a perfect first leg of the round of 32.
Boss Emma Hayes roared: “Everyday I think is a precious day and taking things one day at a time I think is helping Fran.
“She’ll do whatever’s needed to get a result,

“And I think that’s one of the reasons why so much goes in for her, because of the contributions she’s making to the whole, it’s not a surprise to me.
“Fran knows what I think about her. That’s what I will say.
“And she knows that with the performances she keeps putting in that the rewards will come for her whatever they are.
“I think we have a tendency to build players up so much and then put them under excruciating pressure, and then kick them when they’re on the way down.

“The important thing to say about Fran is that we’re at a nice level place and that’s where we’re going to remain.”

The visitors burst out the traps with Harder breaking free on the left flank to find space amid Benfica’s leaky backline and tee up England.
England flicked back to Kirby who kept a cool head to tap in just 80 SECONDS in.
Hayes’ side continued to open fire in front of Carolina Vilao’s goal, with England stinging the Portuguese stopper’s feet with a rasping effort.
And it was only a matter of time before they doubled their lead.
The second breakthrough arrived when Guro Reiten stood up the most inviting of deliveries on the half-hour mark.
She sent her free-kick dipping and curling with Millie Bright and England tussling to get on the end of it – but it was Bright who came out on top to make the crucial touch.
Just three minutes later Kirby added to the first-half demolition thanks to assist queen Reiten.
The Norwegian star sent a peach of a pass onto the Chelsea striker’s path for her to rifle home.
Harder completed the West Londoners’ demolition after rising highest from Reiten’s inch-perfect corner to head home on the stroke of half-time.
England tucked into the goal fest after the break after slotting home from Ji So-Yun’s cute through ball.
The host’s misery was complete when Christy Ucheibe was sent packing after picking up a second yellow for clattering into Erin Cuthbert.
Harder could have made it six before her shot was snaffled up by Vilao.
Ann-Katrin Berger made a genuinely world class stop to deny Cloe Lacasse a late consolation in the dying moments.
But it is worth remembering that Benfica are debutants on the European stage having only formed a women’s side for two-years.

PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir FREE: Live stream, TV channel, kick-off time TONIGHT for rescheduled Champions League match

ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR reconvene their Champions League match against PSG tonight.
The fixture in Manchester United’s group H was abandoned last night in the 14th minute of the game.

Istanbul star Demba Ba challenged the fourth official before the players left the pitch
What time will PSG vs Istanbul kick off tonight?

PSG vs Istanbul will kick off at 5.55pm GMT tonight.
The match will resume from the 14th minute, which was the time it was abandoned last night.
The Parc des Princes plays host.
Why was it abandoned last night?
Players from both teams walked off the field in solidarity after the fourth official, Romanian Sebastian Coltescu, allegedly sparked a race row.

Approaching the 15th minute of the contest, Istanbul’s assistant manager Pierre Webo was the victim of alleged racist behaviour.
Cameroonian Webo was initially shown a red card by referee Ovidiu Hategan after he was singled out by Coltescu for saying something out of turn from the bench.
It was then that an incensed Demba Ba, a substitute on the night, confronted the official, with Istanbul later alleging in a tweet that a ‘racist word’ was said to Webo.

Istanbul assistant manager Pierre Webo starts to question Sebastian Coltescu, circled far left, for his alleged language
The former Chelsea striker could be heard saying: “You never say ‘this white guy’, you say ‘this guy’, so why when you’re mentioning him… listen to me… why when you mention a black guy, why do you say ‘this black guy’.”

The match was originally suspended, before it was later abandoned as Istanbul objected to fourth official Coltescu instead working as the VAR assistant for the remainder of the game.
A new officiating team will take charge of the match tonight.
What TV channel and live stream is it on?
BT Sports have the Champions League rights in the UK.
They will be showing it on their BT Sport ESPN channel.
    Coverage starts at 5.45pm tonight.
How can I watch it for free?
EE customers can get a free three-month trial of BT Sport by texting SPORT to 150.
At the end of the three months you will automatically roll onto the £15 per month subscription.
Or you can cancel the trial at any time during the three months by texting STOP SPORT to 150.
Is there any way Man Utd can still progress?
Sadly for Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side, there is not.
Champions League group sorting is done on head-to-heads, not goal difference.
So even if PSG lose by a large margin it will not affect the standings.
PSG beat Man Utd 3-1 at Old Trafford, and lost 2-1 in Paris, giving them a better head-to-head record. More

Watch Paulo Dybala taunt Koeman after he tells Juventus bench to ‘SHUT UP’ as they demand Barcelona’s Lenglet sent off

PAULO DYBALA was seen taunting Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman after the Dutchman told the Juventus bench to ‘shut up’.
Dybala and the rest of Juve’s subs were trying to get Clement Lenglet sent-off after he gave away a penalty during Barca’s 3-0 Champions League defeat at the Nou Camp on Tuesday.

Paulo Dybala and his team-mates were seen taunting the Dutchman

And Koeman did not react kindly.
Footage shows the angry ex-Everton boss approaching the subs and gesticulating before his path is blocked by a Juve coach.
And rather than stop or sit down, Dybala and his team-mate proceed to laugh and taunt the 57-year-old.
Furious Koeman is eventually shepherded away by a fellow Barca member of staff as the Juve players watch on.

Lenglet was only shown a yellow for the handball incident but Cristiano Ronaldo slammed home the penalty to make it 3-0.
It was the first time the Portuguese megastar had ever scored against Lionel Messi in the Champions League.
And after the game, the 35-year-old – who scored two penalties in the game – revealed he never saw the Argentine as his rival.
Ronaldo said: “I have always had a very cordial relationship with him [Messi].

Always great to return to Spain and to Catalunya, always hard to play in Camp Nou against one of the best teams I ever faced. Today we were a team of Champions! A true, strong and united family! “I shared 12, 13 or 14 years of award ceremonies with him. I never saw him as a rival.
“He always tries to do what is best for his team and me too. I always got along very well with him.
“But we know that in football, for the press, for the show, a rivalry is sought, but I have always gotten along well with him.”

Watch Peter Schmeichel’s frustrated reaction to Man Utd’s loss at RB Leipzig that leaves Jamie Carragher over the moon

LEGENDARY Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel looked totally exasperated as his old team crashed out the Champions League last night.
The Red Devils lost 3-2 at RB Leipzig when all they needed was a draw to qualify for the knockout stage – and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was delighted.

Schmeichel, 52, was in Paris watching the other game in United’s group – Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir.
In footage that surfaced after the game, the Dane is seen watching United’s match pitchside on a laptop.
And at one of many disappointing stages of the game for his old team, Schmeichel shakes his head and slumps back in his seat.
Carragher was back in the CBS studio alongside former Manchester City ace Micah Richards.

And when speaking to Schmeichel after the game, he gloated: “Peter, obviously you’re disappointed.
“You can imagine we were quite pleased in here but we were almost as entertained by watching the game as we were by watching you.
“We did have a camera and we could actually see you.
“You’re watching there on the laptop and you’ve had enough.”

Earlier today, SunSport revealed United may miss out on a £50million transfer kitty as a result of Tuesday’s Champions League departure.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s odds to be the next Premier League manager sacked were also slashed.
And Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino were installed as favourites to take over is the Norwegian does go.

Man Utd miss out on potential £50m transfer kitty funds with financial repercussions of Champions League exit revealed

MANCHESTER UNITED are staring at a potential £50million financial black hole after their Champions League debacle.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side suffered humiliation as they lost to RB Leipzig to slip into the Europa League.

And that could see them miss out on top targets like Jadon SanchoCredit: EPA

But with United’s finances already suffering as a result of the Covid crisis, the price of failure is even starker.
United have been heavily linked with several expensive stars including Jadon Sancho and Eduardo Camavinga which could all be affected by Tuesday night’s departure.
Playing in front of an empty Old Trafford since March has cost United around £6m in revenue from each home game without fans, adding up to £78m so far.
But the United bean counters had anticipated a run into the knock-out stage at least.

And they will now be weighing up the huge repercussions on next summer’s potential transfer budget.
By failing to make the last 16, United have missed out on a potential £46m in extra Champions League earnings, in addition to the further £18m from three more possible home games in the competition.
In stark contrast, even if they go all the way to win the Europa League Final in Gdansk in May, United would only bank £12.55m in prize money, although they would have the possibility of an extra home match.
Winning just three of their group games, and losing the other three, gives United Champions League bonuses of £21.2m – the three defeats cost them a further £7.2m.

The Old Trafford side banked an initial £25.96m as their ‘historical coefficient’ plus £5.78m as England’s third-placed team from last season, for a total of £52.94m.
But United anticipated making the last eight, with £8.05m – the qualification bonus minus the £450,000 prize fund for the last 32 of the Europa League – out of the window as an immediate repercussion to the loss in Germany.
But the exit means United will now also take a smaller share of the £28.9m second half of the English ‘market pool’ TV payments, with each round progressed by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City making Solskjaer’s team’s slice of the pie smaller.
It all adds up to a major financial blow in addition to the savage one to the club’s footballing stock.

Raging Jordi Alba ‘branded referee a b******’ in explosive rant during Barcelona’s Champions League loss to Juventus

The left-back was furious in the first half after former Arsenal man Aaron Ramsey brought down Frenkie de Jong.

“You have good friends in Italy?”
The game – which finished 3-0 to Juventus – was an ill tempered affair.
