Chelsea’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid set to be moved to Bucharest due to Spain’s Covid travel ban

CHELSEA are set to play their Champions League last 16 first leg tie with Atletico Madrid in ROMANIA.
LaLiga leaders Atletico are desperate to play the February 23 game on home soil in the Wanda Metropolitano.

But Spanish government restrictions on travel from the UK have still to be lifted.
They are expected to be extended beyond the current deadline of February 16, meaning the Spanish side will have to find an alternative location.
And the preferred option is understood to be Bucharest’s Arena Nationala, the venue where Diego Simeone’s side beat Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao to win the Europa League in 2012.
It means that all three English sides are now likely to play their Champions League last 16 away ties on neutral soil while retaining home advantage for the second leg.

Uefa have already confirmed that Liverpool’s first leg against Leipzig will be played in Budapest next week.
And Manchester City are unlikely to be allowed to travel to Germany to face Borussia Monchengladbach eight days later.
The Covid restrictions will also impact on the Prem clubs in the Europa League, with the same Spanish border controls meaning Real Sociedad will have to find a new venue for their game with Manchester United.

Arsenal and Benfica are almost certain to have to play both legs of their last 32 tie in third countries.

But Spurs are able to travel to Austria for their tie with Wolfsberger, while Leicester can fly to Prague for the clash with Slavia in the Czech capital.
Rangers, meanwhile, will face Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Liverpool to face RB Leipzig in Budapest for Champions League first leg after coronavirus rules force tie out of Germany

LIVERPOOL’S Champions League last 16 away tie against RB Leipzig will be played in BUDAPEST, Uefa confirmed.
It follows after the German government banned travel to the country from areas that have mutant strains of the coronavirus, until February 17.

An application by Leipzig for special permission for Liverpool to enter the country was refused by federal police.
And now Uefa have announced the venue change with the 8pm UK kick-off time remaining the same.
They said: “UEFA would like to thank RB Leipzig and Liverpool FC for their close cooperation and assistance in finding a solution to the issue at hand, as well as the Hungarian Football Federation for their support and agreeing to host the match in question.”
The Puskas Arena in the Hungarian capital will now stage the game on February 16.

Bundesliga outfit Leipzig also considered moving the game to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but opted to stay in mainland Europe.
Manchester City are likely to play the first leg of their tie against Borussia Monchengladbach eight days later on neutral territory.
Their home matches in the second legs will go ahead as planned unless UK border regulations change.
Arsenal and Benfica, though, are now almost certain to have to play both legs of their Europa League last 32 tie on neutral grounds.

Uefa is expected to confirm the venues in the next 48 hours.

They recently insisted the delayed Euro 2020 will go ahead as scheduled this summer.
But Euro bosses have left themselves a get-out clause if the virus runs out of control and forces last-minute changes.
The viability of a tournament held in 12 nations has been under increasing question as the pandemic continues to hold sway across Europe.
But after a virtual meeting with all 12 planned host nations on Wednesday, Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed there were no current plans to rip up the current schedule.

Champions League proposed format changes that could see ALL Big Six clubs qualify sparks blazing row among Prem sides

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs were embroiled in a furious row over proposed changes to the Champions League.
The latest meeting of the 20 ‘shareholder’ clubs was dominated by a terse and tense debate over the plans, explained for the first time by League chief executive Richard Masters.

At the height of the bust-up, which saw a scheduled two-hour virtual meeting lasting more than three hours, one club chief even threatened to SUE Uefa.
Masters outlined the latest proposals, which have emerged after a series of meetings between Uefa bigwigs and representatives of a small number of members of the European Club Association, including Manchester United.
Uefa, seeking to ward off the genuine threat of a breakaway European Super League, is proposing extending its blue riband competition to 36 clubs, four more than the current 32.
All clubs would play 10 games in the initial phase, using the so-called “Swiss system” to compile a table of all 36 sides.

But three of those places would be available to clubs based on previous European performances.
As SunSport revealed in December, that opens the prospect of all of the Prem Big Six qualifying for the Champions League, even if they finish out of the top four.
The unveiling, ahead of a meeting of the major European leagues on Friday was the first time Prem clubs had officially discussed the projected changes.
And while Masters was merely explaining what is likely to be on the table, there was significant club anger over the possibility of Big Six clubs leapfrogging other Prem rivals into the Champions League cash cow, despite finishing BELOW them in the table.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish was among the loudest voices dismissing the plans as  both wrong and unfair.
Other clubs backed Parish as they argued the ECA was seeking to operate as little more than a self-interested cartel by introducing the effective backstop for failure before the legal threat was made.
That view was made stronger as it emerged the preferred method for determining the three extra places is Uefa’s “10-year historical” calculation, which gives extra weight for past European trophy success.
But SunSport can also reveal that among the proposals being mooted by the ECA for European football from the 2024-25 season is a mandated reduction in the size of top flight domestic leagues.
The preferred number is 16, four fewer than the Prem currently has, but there is a growing push for an “absolute maximum” of 18 teams.
That would be a red light for the majority of Prem but is the long-term aim of the Big Six and will be part of their demands when the promised “Strategic Review” of the League is discussed later this month.
Equally critically, the current 125 Champions League games would be almost doubled by ba 180-match opening phase.
That has brought serious worries about the knock-on effects of the value of the Prem broadcasting and sponsorship deals in a depressed post-Covid market.

Liverpool face Champions League trip to London or Budapest for Leipzig tie after Covid crackdown ruled out Germany trip

LIVERPOOL’S Champions League clash against RB Leipzig could take place in Budapest or London as they will not be allowed into Germany.
All flights from the UK are banned until February 17 and the Anfield side’s application for a special permit to travel was yesterday thrown out.

Now Liverpool’s last-16 opponents face a race against time to find an alternative venue for the first leg, which is due to be played on February 16.
A German government statement read: “The Federal Police informed RB Leipzig that the case does not fall under the category of exceptional circumstances.”
London and Budapest have been mentioned as possibilities but switching the tie to play the first leg at Anfield is not an option.
It has now emerged that Borussia Monchengladbach are also making contingency plans ahead of their clash with Manchester City.

Danish club FC Midtjylland have been approached to see whether they could stage that game on February 24 if the border ban is extended.
Liverpool are being kept informed, with Uefa seeking venues confirmed by Monday.
The governing body remain in talks with Leipzig and hope a suitable plan can be drawn up in that time frame.
As for City, sources at the Etihad say they are still expecting that their Champions League fixture will take place at the Borussia Park Stadium.

Gladbach have explored several other options for their meeting with boss Pep Guardiola and his Premier League leaders.
FC Midtjylland were sounded out as their MCH Arena has already been a venue in the competition.
City played there in a Uefa Cup qualifying tie in August 2008, when Mark Hughes’ men squeezed through on penalties.
Uefa have also given Prem chiefs permission to schedule Manchester City’s postponed game at Everton directly against BT’s Champions League coverage.
A Covid outbreak at City saw the trip to the Toffees on December 28 called off just hours before kick-off.
It is one of three Prem games rescheduled for later this month on Champions League nights.
Uefa previously threatened action against top-flight leagues who overlapped with their official dates.
Burnley v Fulham and Leeds v Southampton, on February 17 and 23 respectively, will kick off at 6pm to avoid a direct clash.
City’s game will be an 8.15pm start on Amazon Prime on Wednesday February 17 after the green light from European chiefs.

Premier League’s fourth-placed team could miss out on Champions League spot

THE Premier League’s fourth-placed team could miss out on a Champions League spot next season.
But such an £80million-plus hit for a Prem giant would need a chain of events as unusual as, say, Liverpool losing home league games to Burnley and Brighton in the same week…

Jurgen Klopp would be fuming if his Liverpool side missed out on a Champions League spot for next seasonCredit: Tom Jenkins/ The Guardian

Only five teams from any country can compete in the Champions League in the same campaign.
So Prem representation for the following season would first be threatened if English clubs won the Champions League AND the Europa League in one term.
That’s because the winners of those two tournaments automatically qualify for the Champions League.
But it would still need a far more unlikely outcome for the Prem to be reduced to only three entrants in Europe’s top club competition.

The Champions League and Europa League victors would both have to finish outside the Prem top three.
As it stands, Manchester City lead the Prem ahead of their Champions League last-16 clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
And Liverpool are fourth, in the same month they face RB Leipzig.
England’s other Champions League survivors are sixth-placed Chelsea, whose new manager Thomas Tuchel has inherited a tough Euro challenge against LaLiga pacesetters Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are nine points adrift of fourth spot as they prepare for a Europa League last-32 clash with Benfica.
It all means the possibility of the Prem losing a Champions League place for 2021-22 can’t quite be ignored – not yet, anyway.
And it’s is another reason why this season’s title chase seems more exciting than most, especially as Leicester in third spot are breaking up the so-called big boys.

Liverpool include Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in Champions League squad raising hopes crocked duo can return

LIVERPOOL have included Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in their latest Champions League squad.
And Jurgen Klopp’s decision has raised hope the crocked duo will return before the end of the season.

Joe Gomez is also included despite the pair having long-term injuriesCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Superstar Van Dijk has not featured since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton in October.
Meanwhile, Gomez has not been seen since hurting his knee in England training three months ago.
But the centre-backs have both been named in Klopp’s 25-man Champions League squad ahead of this month’s last-16 tie against RB Leipzig.
Selecting the pair raises hopes for fans that they may yet feature again this season.

But while he’s remained tight-lipped over Gomez, Klopp said that Van Dijk is unlikely to play again this term.
The tactician explained: “No doctor told me there’s a chance for Virgil to play again this season.
“I don’t want to say it’s impossible but it’s not likely. I think we have space for Virgil on the Champions League list.
“If we have space, then Virgil will also be on the Premier League list. If there is no space we have to make a decision. If he is there it is only because we hope for a miracle.”

Liverpool have been hit hard by defensive injuries, with Joel Matip and makeshift centre-half Fabinho also succumbing to setbacks.
It forced Klopp to bring in TWO new defenders on deadline day.
Ben Davies was a surprise signing from Championship outfit Preston, with Liverpool hijacking his move to Celtic at the 11th hour.
Klopp also sanctioned a loan for Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, which can be made permanent in the summer if he impresses.

Liverpool and Man City join Arsenal in facing playing European games at neutral venue over Germany’s Covid travel ban

LIVERPOOL, Manchester City and Arsenal all face playing European games on neutral territory this month.
Uefa have confirmed that matches that cannot be played in their scheduled locations because of Covid-related protocols must be moved to neutral venues.

That means that Arsenal and Benfica must agree on a third country to host both legs of their Europa League last 16 clash – unless the Government lifts its “red list” of countries by next Monday.
But the newly-approved regulations covering the knock-out phases of their two competitions, which begin later this month also impact on City and Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield outfit are due to travel to Leipzig for their last 16 first leg clash on February 16, with City due to play at Borussia Monchengladbach eight days later.

But while German clubs can travel to the UK as long as they remain in elite Covid-secure bubbles, there is no reciprocal arrangement.

German concern at the mutant strains of the virus in the UK means travel from England is effectively banned except for specific cases and the Government said: “Currently there is no special arrangement for professional athletes.”
That adds another layer of uncertainty to the remainder of the European programme, with one short-term option being Uefa intervening to switch the home venues of the first leg matches involving Liverpool and City to England.
But it seems certain that Arsenal will play both legs against Benfica on neutral ground – with the preferred option of staging the games in Germany now OFF the agenda.
While travel corridors do exist within Europe, the new border restrictions for the 33 “red list” nations – which include Portugal – have no exemptions for elite sports.

It means Benfica’s travelling party would have to begin their 10-day hotel quarantine in the UK by Sunday.
That is infeasible, while Arsenal would also have to go into Government-approved accommodation for 10 days from February 25 after the away leg of the tie.
But while Uefa state that “as a rule, matches are played at the UEFA approved venue of the home club” there is dispensation for change where “restrictions imposed by the national/local authorities could result in the match not taking place as scheduled”.
The deadline for confirming whether Arsenal can host the tie, or  is 11pm next Monday.

FRIDAY NIGHT POKER: Play against us to win a share of $5,500
Uefa ruled that Arsenal are under obligation to “propose a suitable alternative venue which may be in a neutral country” within Uefa where the match can “take place without any restrictions for both clubs”.
If Arsenal cannot do that – the Gunners are responsible for covering all the costs of the rescheduled game – they would “be held responsible” and forfeit the game 3-0.
But with similar border restrictions facing the Gunners after the away leg, Uefa also make the same demands on Benfica for the second part of the tie.
Uefa would prefer the chosen venue to be a “Uefa-approved” stadium being used in this season’s competition.
Euro chiefs can overrule the clubs’ choice of stadium and could, if necessary, order the tie to be played as a one-off game in a neutral venue of their choosing.
    3-0 FORFEITS
Uefa chiefs have also reiterated Covid protocols for clubs in the two competitions that are struck by an outbreak of the virus.
If clubs have 13 or more players available, the match must be played as scheduled – unless all goalkeepers on the club’s books are ruled out.
If a club has fewer than 13 available, or no keepers, Uefa will allow a postponement if the match can then be rescheduled before specific cut-off dates for each round, with March 5 the first Europa League deadline and April 2 the final date for the last 16 ties of both competitions.
But with the March international break lasting the final 10 days of the month, there is little wriggle room to fit in games that cannot be played, leaving the clubs deemed responsible facing 3-0 forfeits.

Bayern Munich hold secret meeting with Dayot Upamecano in bid to beat Man Utd and Chelsea to £38m transfer

BAYERN MUNICH have held a secret meeting with Dayot Upamecano’s representatives, according to reports in Germany.
The highly-rated RB Leipzig defender is said to be a target for several big clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

According to German newspaper Bild, Upamecano’s agents were seen entering the underground car park of Bayern’s offices on Thursday.
The club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has publicly expressed an interest in the defender.
He told Sky Sport in Germany: “Upamecano to Bayern? Of course we are thinking about him. We had a good meeting with his agents yesterday. Let’s see what happens.”
The 22-year-old has impressed since joining Leipzig from fellow Red Bull-owned club Salzburg in 2017.

He was named in the Champions League Squad of the Season in 2019-20 and made his France debut against Sweden in September.
Due to a release clause in his contract, Upamecano is available for just £38m this summer.

Liverpool are rumoured to be interested in the defender and his Leipzig colleague Ibrahima Konate.

Jurgen Klopp is also said to be keen on taking New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long on loan to fix his defensive problems.
The Liverpool manager has been without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip for large parts of the season due to injury.

But Manchester United could still make a £55m move for Upamecano this transfer window and scupper Klopp’s plans.
New Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is also said to be a huge fan of the France international and may battle United, Liverpool and Bayern for his signature.
If Upamecano does not move this transfer window, he and Leipzig will face Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.
