Fans set to return for Champions League final with talks over 37,500 attending Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium

ANYWHERE up to 37,500 fans could attend this season’s Champions League Final.
Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium is set to host the bumper spectacle on May 29.

Mail Online claims ‘talks are at an advanced stage’ for between ‘30 to 50 per cent’ of the 76,092-capacity arena to be full of supporters.
Today’s report also states the prospect of switching venues has also been raised amid concerns Uefa will be able to ‘generate sufficient revenue to make it worthwhile’ for the host.
Discussions between the governing body and Turkish government are still ongoing.
It is believed that between 22,500 and 37,500 fans could be permitted entry to the showpiece.

However, the chances of ticket allocations being sent to the two clubs that reach the final remains slim – although it has not been ruled out completely.
Premier League sides Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea remain in the competition.
If tickets are only sold to Istanbul locals, then the chances are more likely that the Ataturk will have 50 per cent of its capacity in use rather than the 30.
The stadium was due to host the 2020 Champions League final until the outbreak of Covid-19.

That led to a major change, with the remaining knockout stages and final instead being shifted to Lisbon.

BETS OF THE DAY: GET MAN CITY AT 6/1 TO WIN TONIGHT – PLUS RONALDO TO SCORE 2+ GOALS BOOSTED

The news comes after fans in England were boosted when SunSport revealed yesterday they could be allowed in to watch the two domestic cup finals – in a trial to help ensure supporters for Euro 2020.
The FA is determined to open up some of the Wembley turnstiles for the seven games due to be played in the stadium during the international tournament in June and July.
And that could see up to 10,000 supporters in for the April 29 Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Spurs and the FA Cup final the following month.
Both events would be staging posts towards the summer, with the FA hoping to be able to fill 30 per cent of Wembley’s 90,000 capacity by the Euros.
FA chiefs are part of the Government’s Sports Technology Innovation Group, headed by Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross.
Discussions over the past year have included concepts such as digital Covid passports for spectators, with football bosses signalling their willingness to act as “guinea pigs” for the safe re-opening of the country.
And even getting reduced numbers in to Wembley in the spring would be a huge staging post in the right direction.
Expectations of a lifting of Covid restrictions in the coming weeks will make the possibility of reopening turnstiles more realistic, although there is no expectation of fans being back in Prem grounds before next season.

PSG slap £175m price tag on Kylian Mbappe amid Real Madrid interest with French star ‘leaning towards’ transfer exit

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN will demand £175million for Kylian Mbappe this summer, according to reports.
Real Madrid want the Frenchman but he will not come cheap even though the superstar is reportedly ‘leaning towards an exit’.

Mbappe’s contract expires in the summer of 2022.
But if he decides not to extend the deal, PSG may look to cash in at the end of this season.
Even though the 22-year-old will only have a year left at that stage, the French champions still want £175m, according to Le Parisien.
Mbappe enjoys playing for PSG but is said to be coming around to the idea of leaving.

And after he left fans around the world in awe with his Champions League hat-trick against Barcelona on Tuesday, Mbappe said he’d be stupid to make a transfer decision after just one game.
The World Cup winner scored three as PSG thrashed the Spanish giants 4-1 during the first-leg of the last-16 tie.
Liverpool and Manchester City are among the list of other clubs keen to snap him up.
But speaking after the win over Barca, Mbappe said: “The PSG shirt is one that I cherish and carry in my heart.

“It’s something to reflect on for the long term.
“I’ve always said that I’m happy here and games like that make you very happy.”
Mbappe’s sensational performance at the Nou Camp left Marcus Rashford, Neymar and Jadon Sancho in awe.
Ex-Chelsea star Joe Cole also said he is the best player in the world.
Rio Ferdinand backed him up and insisted Mbappe is on track to ‘take over the throne’.
Mbappe was also given a rare nine out of ten for his masterclass by L’Equipe.
And Arsene Wenger urged PSG to focus on keeping Mbappe and Neymar rather than sign Lionel Messi.

Watch fuming Cristiano Ronaldo rage at referee after being denied last-ditch penalty in Juventus’ loss to Porto

CRISTIANO RONALDO almost lost it after he was denied a last ditch-penalty on what was a miserable return to Portugal.
He and his Juventus team-mates suffered a 2-1 defeat in the first-leg of their last-16 Champions League clash with Porto.

Ronaldo is fuming here! 😡Late drama as Juventus are convinced they should have been awarded a last-minute penalty…No foul is given and Porto win the first leg 2-1! 🔵⚪️ pic.twitter.com/ehaWWw1nBR

The Serie A giants were trailing 2-0 but secured a precious lifeline when Federico Chiesa grabbed an important away goal late on.
And it could have gotten even better for Juve seconds before the final whistle when Ronaldo brought down the ball and flicked it backwards inside the area before colliding with defender Zaidu Sanusi.
The 36-year-old instantly fell to the floor and demanded a penalty only for the ref to wave his pleas away.
Zaidu sarcastically applauded Ronaldo after the challenge, indicating what he thought to be play-acting from the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

VAR was called into action but ruled that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid icon was already going to ground before coming into contact with Sanusi.
That decision infuriated the veteran as he angrily let rip at the full-time whistle.
Ronaldo was spotted shouting at the officials while continuing to angrily jab and point his finger towards them.

The whole night started badly for Juventus as Rodrigo Bentancur’s back pass was pounced on by Porto’s Mehdi Taremi to break the deadlock after just 63 seconds.
That was the quickest goal conceded by the away side in Champions League history.
The visitors started the second period just as badly as they fell two behind just seconds into the half courtesy of Moussa Marega.
But Chiesa’s late strike was a huge boost on an otherwise forgettable night for the Italian champions.

Erling Haaland admits he was inspired by Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick as pair eclipse Messi and Ronaldo in Champions League

ERLING HAALAND paid tribute to Kylian Mbappe for motivating his own fantastic performance in the Champions League.
After the Paris Saint-Germain star hit a hat-trick past Barcelona on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland struck a brace against Sevilla a night later.

The Norwegian teed up Mahmoud Dahoud’s powerful equaliser in the last-16 first leg before completing the first-half comeback.
A devastating counter-attack saw Jadon Sancho play a delightful flick into Haaland for his first before adding another calm finish before half-time.
With Dortmund 3-2 up and in control of the tie, he stated afterwards that Mbappe’s Camp Nou heroics drove him onto a performance of his own.
Haaland told Norwegian broadcaster Viaplay: “It was good to score goals.

“I love the Champions League and when I saw Mbappe score the hat-trick yesterday I got free motivation, so thanks to him.
“He scored some nice goals and I got a good boost from him.”

PSG knocked Borussia out of last year’s Champions League and Mbappe even joined in poking fun at the young striker by mimicking his celebration.
A rematch is certainly on the cards after their first legs this week, with Les Parisiens 4-1 up over Barcelona.

The pair’s five goals in the past two days have amplified claims that they have overtaken Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the world’s top players.
The veteran Juventus star failed to score as his Juventus side lost 2-1 to Porto on Wednesday.
Together, Mbappe and Haaland have 28 goals to their name since the start of last season’s Champions League – trouncing Messi and Ronaldo’s combined total of 15 in the competition.
Former England star Rio Ferdinand spoke of how the French forward’s talents strike fear into defenders following his hat-trick.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: “He brings everything to the party that you don’t want to be combating as a centre-half.
“The pace, the power, the nerve under pressure, the guile, the occasion.
“He wants that, he breathes so easy in those situations. That’s what he thrives on.

Watch Cristiano Ronaldo get tackled by TEAM-MATE Alex Sandro on frustrating night for Juventus superstar vs Porto

IT was not Cristiano Ronaldo’s night as Juventus fell to a 2-1 defeat to Porto.
A disappointing performance in the 36-year-old’s pursuit of his sixth Champions League title was summed up by one hilariously clumsy moment.

If you’re chasing a game, don’t get in a teammate’s way…Especially if that teammate is Ronaldo! 😤Alex Sandro sums up a disappointing evening for Juve 😔 pic.twitter.com/COou2DoQsY
    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) February 17, 2021

As Ronaldo attempted to start an attack down the left, he was tackled by his own team-mate – and skipper after Giorgio Chiellini went off injured – Alex Sandro.
The winger had plenty of space to run into but got his wires crossed with the Brazilian, who bounced off Ronaldo as he remained rooted to the spot.
Juve fans were left cursing a rather inept performance from the reigning Serie A champions on Wednesday night.
It took just 63 seconds for Porto to lead, courtesy of an assist by Juve’s own Rodrigo Bentancur after his underhit backpass was snaffled up by Mehdi Taremi.

The Portuguese side made it two just 19 seconds after the break when Moussa Marega broke into the box to score.
Federico Chiesa struck a vital away goal eight minutes from time before Ronaldo was left incensed by a penalty shout not going his way.
In the last attack of the match, he controlled the ball around Zaidu Sanusi and hit the deck – but had his pleas waved away by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande.
Statistically speaking, it was a very quiet evening for the veteran superstar as he fired off just one shot on goal.

Ronaldo also won only nine of his 20 duels and played fewer passes than Chiellini, who was subbed off injured after 35 minutes.
When he did get going, he found his team-mates coming up short and the Sandro incident was added to by Ronaldo pinging a delightful cross to the far-post, only for no Juventus strikers to be anywhere near finishing it off.
His frustration at the failure to pick up on his pass was visible by the winger’s reaction.
Former Italy forward Antonio Cassano slated Ronaldo’s performances under Bianconeri boss Andrea Pirlo after the defeat.

Sevilla 2-3 Dortmund LIVE RESULT: Haaland double hands Borussia advantage but De Jong late strike gives Spaniards hope

SEVILLA and Borussia Dortmund played out a thriller in Spain.
Suso struck early on to give the hosts the lead but Mahmoud Dahoud and an Erling Haaland double turned the game on its head.

However, Luuk de Jong’s late goal has given the Spaniards some hope of progressing.

    THAT’S ALL FOR TONIGHT!
Borussia Dortmund beat Sevilla 3-2 in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland and a wonder strike Mahmoud Dahoud.
Suso had given the home side an early lead before three goals from Dortmund put them firmly in control.
A late strike from Luuk de Jong has kept this tie on a knife edge, although the ball is in Dortmund’s court.
The 2nd leg will be played on Tuesday 9th March.

    Goodnight!

    REACTION FROM MARCO REUS
“One game isn’t enough to make everything from recent weeks right. We took an important step tonight and need to aim to do exactly the same if not more in the derby [against Schalke] this weekend.
“In the second half it wasn’t as good because we became too passive. As a result we didn’t have enough phases of possession and the passes beyond the back line didn’t come off. It got harder as the night wore on so we’re delighted to have won.
“It feels very good. The first half, outside of the early goal, went exactly as we had envisioned it. We sat a little deeper than normal but were very compact. We won the ball well, got it forward onto dangerous positions and took the lead. The first half was very good.”

    REACTION FROM HAALAND
“We have to recover quickly now. We’ve got a big game ahead this weekend. We have to take this positive mindset into that game because we have to win that one as well, but it was really nice to win tonight in Spain.”
“We had a good plan. Edin [Terzić] has been good and I’ve been talking a lot with him. He said today would be my game and that I would get my chances and I did, so it was an important win.
“I felt like, I don’t know if you can say it’s down to motivation or passion or whatever, but we were more online today. It was good. It was not good to let in two goals, but it is good to score three away goals and take them with us.”

    REACTION FROM LOPETEGUI
“The result is not good. Losing at home to Dortmund is never positive, but there is one game left and we are going to hold on to that possibility. We will go with ambition and enthusiasm, we have not deserved to lose.
“But they have one of the best players in the world, who has made a difference, and it has been an excessive punishment. In the second half the team has rebuilt, we have pressed them and we had opportunities to draw, but we have to get up quickly and recover well
“We deserved the draw, a few more goals. In the first half they punished us every time they arrived and the referee also set a very high level of aggressiveness and we have to adapt to that bar very quickly. Then we have done it and the team has been better.
“Now it’s time to recover well, clear the mind since a defeat is not good, but there are positive things such as the reaction, not allowing them to counterattack … There are positive things apart from the result, which is not good, but as I said we will go with ambition and illusion of beating them.”

    THAT’S ALL FROM PORTO
Porto picked up a historic 2-1 win over Juventus at the Dragao Stadium, but the visitors still fly back to Italy with a smile on their faces after scoring an away goal.
The Dragons stunned Juve just after two minutes when they picked up the lead thanks to a shocking blunder by Wojciech Szczesny and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Szczesny passed the ball to Bentancur, who was already tightly marked, and the midfielder tried to switch it back with his goalkeeper but Porto star Mehdi Taremi got there first and opened the scoring for the hosts.
Things quickly got worse for Juventus as they lost captain Giorgio Chiellini to a calf injury shortly before half-time.
Porto did it again in the second half as they doubled their lead right after the referee’s whistle as Wilson Manafa ran the ball down the right wing and found Moussa Marega unmarked inside the box where he beat Szczesny, who got a touch on the ball.
Juventus seriously struggled throughout the encounter but still got the away goal just eight minutes before full-time when Adrien Rabiot moved the ball down the left flank and found Federico Chiesa on the other side where he fired a shot that beat Agustin Marchesin.
Thus, the reigning Italian champions got the away goal and became the first Champions League side to score against Porto at the Dragao all season.
Juvetnus had a penalty appeal on the last minute of stoppage time but Cristiano Ronaldo, who was largely anonymous throughout the encounter, appeared to have tripped and Zaidu Sanusi had nothing to do with his fall.
That’s all from us, have a great evening!

    PIRLO REACTS
Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo revealed the impact Porto’s early openers had on his players and explained his choices throughout the match.
Pirlo said: “When you concede a goal after one minute, a strange one at that, it’s natural the players will lose confidence, especially against a side that knows how to clam up in defence.
“Porto got the game immediately on the track they wanted. With such a packed fixture list, it’s normal you can’t always maintain absolute focus and the right tempo, but it shouldn’t have happened in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.
“[Matthijs] De Ligt fortunately just had a cramp. [Giorgio] Chiellini has a calf problem and [Alvaro] Morata wasn’t in good shape before, then was sore at the end too, so we’ll see. Morata hasn’t been at his best since returning from a bout of flu. He was only playing tonight because we needed him.
“He felt ill in the locker room afterwards, he felt faint, so he is not doing well.”

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    CHIESA REACTS
Juventus star Federico Chiesa is confident ahead of the return fixture after his away goal.
Chiesa told Sky Sport Italia: “We scored an away goal, that gives us strength for the second leg, which will definitely be a very different game.
“This was my first Champions League knockout fixture, so I don’t know what these are usually like. We just felt tense from the start and made life difficult for ourselves from the very beginning.
“It will certainly be a different Juve in the second leg, because if we want to qualify for the next round, we need to show something very different”

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    RON AGAIN
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Porto hoodoo has been extended!
Ronaldo now counts only one win in a total of seven matches against the Portuguese giants across all competitions throughout the years.
The star forward faced the Dragons twice in the Portuguese Cup in 2003 with Sporting Lisbon and lost both of the encounters.
The Real Madrid legend then met Jose Mourinho’s historic side in the Champions League’s last 16 in 2004 and lost at the Dragao before their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils and Porto squared up again in the quarter-finals five years later and drew 2-2 in Manchester but Ronaldo’s winner in the return fixture – which marked his one and only goal to date against tonight’ opponents – led Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to the semi-finals

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    MAKING HISTORY
Porto picked up their first ever victory over Juventus!
Ever since their first ever encounter in the European Cup Winners Cup competition in 1984, the Dragons had failed to beat Juve five times; losing four games in the process.
However, the reigning Portuguese champions wouldn’t be denied tonight following an incredible performance.
But can they replicate their success in the return fixture and combine it with a major qualification to the quarter-finals…?

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    HANDING OVER THE CHIES
Federico Chiesa may have put Juventus on course of a major comeback ahead of the return fixture.
Cristiano Ronaldo was anonymous throughout the encounter and that was a major blow for Juve.
That is because the reigning Italian champions have been heavily reliant on Ronaldo in the Champions League knock-out stage in recent years.
But thankfully Chiesa was on target…

1 – Federico Chiesa is the first Juventus player other than Cristiano Ronaldo to score a goal for the Bianconeri in the #UCL knockout stage since Blaise Matuidi in April 2018 (in the quarterfinals against Real Madrid). Handover.#PortoJuventus
    — OptaPaolo (@OptaPaolo) February 17, 2021

    STATS
Juventus controlled 65.3 per cent of possession but still failed to produce anything significant – Federico Chiesa’s goal came out of nothing really…
Juve had 12 shots, five of which were on target, compared to Porto’s eight, five of which were also on target.
The reigning Italian champions completed 86.2 per cent of their passes but most of them happened in midfield and defence as the Dragons, who only got 69.5 per cent right, kept them at bay.
Juventus had four players booked with a yellow card whereas Porto made it out unscathed ahead of the return fixture in Turin

    FT: PORTO 2-1 JUVENTUS
Juventus and Porto have unfinished business ahead of the second-leg in Turin.
The hosts were superior throughout the encounter and picked up a quick opener after just two minutes thanks to a blunder by Wojciech Szczesny and Rodrigo Bentancur.
Szczesny passed the ball to Bentancur, even though he was already tightly marked, and the midfielder switched it back to his keeper but Mehdi Taremi got there first and opened the scoring.
Things got worse for Juve close to half-time as they lost captain Giorgio Chiellini to what seemed to be a calf knock.
Porto got another early goal right after the referee’s whistle in the second half when Wilson Manafa ran the ball down the right wing and found Moussa Marega completely unmarked.
Marega fired a shot, which Szczesny failed to save even though he got a touch to it.
Juventus struggled throughout the encounter but still got an away goal after 82 minutes when Adrien Rabiot found Federico Chiesa with a cross from the left wing and the Fiorentina loanee fired a marvellous shot from the other side to beat Agustin Marchesin.
The Bianconeri had a penalty appeal in the last minute of stoppage time but it appears like Cristiano Rinaldo tripped inside the box and Zaidu Sanusi had nothing to do with it.
Porto picked up a historic win as that was the first time they ever beat Juventus but are still in for a dramatic return fixture!

Porto 2 Juventus 1: Italians concede seconds into BOTH halves as Cristiano Ronaldo and Co fall to shock first leg loss

PORTO stunned Juventus by punishing a huge error to score after just 63 SECONDS of Wednesday’s Champions League tie.
The Serie A giants had never conceded a goal on their previous visits to Estadio Dragao but fell apart in the 2-1 first leg defeat.

In the first minute, Rodrigo Bentancur received the ball from Wojciech Szczesny in his own 18-yard box and attempted a no-look pass back to the goalkeeper.
But the Juventus midfielder was far too casual and Szczesny had to dive in to compete for the ball with Porto’s Mehdi Taremi.
Taremi won the 50/50 and stabbed his effort home to secure an amazing early lead.
It was the fastest goal scored in a Champions League knockout game since David Alaba struck 24 seconds into Bayern Munich’s 2013 quarter-final tie… against Juventus.

Uruguay international Bentancur was handed a starting role in the absence of injured playmaker Arthur Melo and the Italians’ fitness issues only grew in the first-half.
Giorgio Chiellini was replaced by Mehdi Derimal after the half-hour mark – with the substitute chosen over Leonardo Bonucci, who was named on the bench despite struggling with a muscle injury.

The Old Lady were out of sorts throughout the first period but would have hoped for a reaction after the break.
Alas, Porto struck again – this time within 19 seconds of the whistle – to go 2-0 up.

Wilson Manafa’s surge run down the right ended with a smart cutback to Moussa Marega.
The Mali forward controlled the ball and drilled past Szczesny to put the Portuguese side firmly on top in the tie.

Andrea Pirlo threw on Alvaro Morata and Aaron Ramsey but Porto were able to surpass nine hours of Champions League football without conceding a goal.
The hosts came close to the third goal of the night when Liverpool loanee Marko Grujic headed wide after meeting a fine corner.
Yet Federico Chiesa put Juve on the board with a potentially huge away goal on 82 minutes.
The winger’s accurate finish from Adrien Rabiot’s cross could spark the Italians, denied a penalty after Ronaldo hit the deck in the last minute, into action in next month’s Turin return leg.
