Chelsea verdict: Giroud is the Blues’ only world class striker… they must offer him a new deal after Atletico heroics

CHELSEA went eight games unbeaten since Thomas Tuchel took over as head coach after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League.
They got the vital ‘away’ goal to take back to Stamford Bridge on March 17th, and Tuchel will be very pleased with the result in the relocated Bucharest clash.

It doesn’t tell the whole story though, as once again the German boss cut a frustrated figure at times in the first half with Chelsea misplacing pass after pass, and looking clueless in the final third once again.
This has been a bit of a theme from the last few games for this Chelsea side, and they have really lacked any kind of creativity and finesse.
The build-up play was good tonight, and they totally bossed possession against a good team. But it looked like being the same story as time went on and they did not look like scoring.
That is of course until Olivier Giroud popped up with a world-class overhead scissor kick to win it, reiterating exactly what he brings to this team and exactly what he can do.

Chelsea needed it, and they needed a touch of proven quality to end all their hard work in possession. Atletico were there for the taking, and Giroud made sure they took it.
His contract is up at the end of the summer, and this is another stark reminder and message to the decision makers at the club that must to try and persuade him to stay.
Every team needs a Giroud in their squad.
When things are getting frustrating and you cannot see where a goal is going to come from, up steps the French World Cup winner to show you what he does best.

Chelsea do not have another type of striker like Giroud, one who is physically built, holds the ball up, and can be a world class finisher of a chance.

You would think that the Chelsea board will be doing all they can to try and keep him at the club for another year.
Because despite what new strikers might arrive or be pursued by Chelsea, you always feel that Giroud is a needed experienced figure in the squad.
Whether he will want to stay and play a bit-part role as he has been doing is another question, but I am sure the thoughts are there on both sides now.

Chelsea ratings: Giroud proves his class once again with stunning winner but Mendy has some nervy moments vs Atletico

OLIVIER GIROUD scored the decisive goal as Chelsea beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
The Frenchman proved his class with a gorgeous bicycle kick in the 68th that needed a lengthy VAR review first.

Here are tonight’s player ratings from Simon Phillips…
    Edouard Mendy – 5
The Blues stopper almost gave away a goal to Atletico early on with a very heavy touch, and some of his passing out was poor and risky.
    Cesar Azpilicueta – 5

A few poor passes and dodgy moments on the ball from the captain who didn’t exactly look full of confidence tonight.
One of his poorer games in a Chelsea shirt.
    Andreas Christensen – 7
Tidy on the ball largely in build-up play but he looked unsteady at times when under pressure on the ball.

    The vital match stats

    Antonio Rudiger – 7
Dodgy in a couple of moments defensively but contributed well in Chelsea’s build up play and kept his nerve under pressure.
    Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7
Lively and making good runs in behind but frustratingly his team mates often over hit the pass to him.
He was always a nuisance to Thomas Lemar down that right hand side.
    Mateo Kovacic – 7
Good energy, but he was often wasteful with his passes in the final third which has been a reoccurring issue for Chelsea.

Jorginho was less than impressive in midfieldCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    Jorginho – 5
His passing was really poor and he was guilty of misplacing far too many simple balls.
Not his best game in a Chelsea shirt and he was sluggish defensively.
    Marcos Alonso – 6
Some good contributions going forward but dodgy at the back.
A few good crosses but he stayed rather quiet.
    Mason Mount – 8
He would have once again liked to have done better in the final third, but also once again he was one of Chelsea’s more standout players and threats in attack.

Mason Mount was sharp in an advanced roleCredit: EPA
    Timo Werner – 6
Looked very sharp and had some neat touches in dangerous areas.
Got one good shot off in the first half and creating the chance for himself.
Second half he dropped off a little.
    Olivier Giroud – 9
Help the ball up well when asked and made some decent runs, but he really came alive in the second half to score a beautiful overhead scissor kick volley to put Chelsea 1-0 up.

Atletico Madrid 0 Chelsea 1: Watch Olivier Giroud score incredible bicycle kick as Blues earn crucial first leg win

HE is not just a pretty face, Olivier Giroud – his finishing can be gorgeous too.
Thomas Tuchel, who has done a spot of male modelling himself, willhave fully appreciated the chiselled striker’s acrobatic strike, whichpropelled Chelsea to within touching distance of a first ChampionsLeague quarter-final in seven years.

Oh my, Olivier Giroud! 😍He just loves scoring worldies, doesn’t he!?VAR initially ruled the goal out but it stands as Mario Hermoso was deemed to have deflected the ball onto the Frenchman 🙌 pic.twitter.com/CAweQ8SzAR

Giroud had to agonise for three long minutes before his bicycle kickwas awarded by VAR, having originally been chalked off for offside.
But it was well worth the wait as Tuchel extended his unbeaten run toeight matches with a first-leg defeat of the La Liga leaders inBucharest.
This was his best result to date – and it was fully deserved as theBlues, often naive under previous boss Frank Lampard, were more than amatch for the most streetwise team on the European block.
World Cup-winner Giroud has six Champions League goals this season andthe 34-year-old Frenchman’s experience earned a precious away goal -which still count double in the event of a draw, even without homeadvantage.

The second leg is scheduled for Stamford Bridge March 17 – but that isstill subject to a Covid-related change of venue.
Chelsea have not reached a quarter-final in this competition since2014 – when they were eventually defeated by Atletico in the lastfour.
But Tuchel led Paris St Germain to last summer’s final in abreakthrough European campaign for the filthy-rich French club – andhe clearly has the tactical sharpness to make Chelsea seriouscontenders in Europe’s elite club competition once more.
Diego Simeone’s men had suffered only their second La Liga defeat ofthe season with a shock reverse against Levante and were still withouttheir England full-back Kieran Trippier, due to a ludicrous bettingban.

Luis Suarez and Antonio Rudiger inevitably clashed in RomaniaCredit: AP:Associated Press
Tuchel’s Chelsea has been defensively stout but aside from a narrowwin at an off-colour Tottenham, there had been no serious tests beforethis.
With Atletico, then Manchester United and Liverpool up next, it isgetting serious for the German now – and victory in neutral Bucharestwas an outstanding way to kick off such a series of red-letterfixtures.
Tuchel started Callum Hudson-Odoi at wing-back after his bizarresubstitution at Southampton, half an hour after he’d come off thebench.
And Hudson-Odoi responded with verve and vigour – linking up well withfellow English youngster Mason Mount on several occasions.
It has been a shaky old start for Chelsea – Mount suffered a bookingthat rules him out of the second leg and Edouard Mendy got away witha horrible slip inside the opening two minutes.
Soon Antonio Rudiger was out-muscled and dispossessed by Luis Suarezwho centred across the face of the goal, with Thomas Lemar unable tofinish.
Yet Chelsea were soon passing, moving and probing for an opening.
Mount whistled one across Atletico’s goal, with Werner narrowlyfailing to connect.

Timo Werner played a one-two with Giroud and tumbled in the box butneither his fellow German, ref Felix Brych, or the VAR were impressed.
It was one of those typical Atletico performances – solid, stacked indefence but hardly thrilling. They sat back, soaked it up andthundered forward on the occasional counter-attack.
But their defence was finally pierced by a cute Mount pass whichreleased Werner, whose shot was pushed away at the near post by JanOblak.
Marcos Alonso picked out Mount with a gorgeous curling cross but theEngland man was unsure whether to shoot or cross and ended up doingneither.
Still, this was promising stuff from the Blues – Hudson-Odoi and Mountfrequently linking up down the right and causing headaches for theSpanish side.
Mount was in lively form, slipping past a couple of defenders andsending Werner clear but the German getting funnelled wide.

Joao Felix sent an acrobatic volley over the bar when Atletico broke swiftly.
Suarez was indulging in his usual histrionic villainy, diving andbellyaching to his heart’s content.
But Jorginho was booked – and, like Mount, he will be suspended for the return.
Giroud’s moment arrived on 68 minutes – Mount appeared to have playedhim through, so when the Frenchman unleashed his stunner, the linesmanflagged.
But after a tortuous wait, the remote official decided the last toughhad come off Atletico defender Hermoso – and Chelsea’s celebrationslacked nothing in delirium for the delay.

Giroud has been a European specialist for Chelsea over the last coupleof seasons.
Every time it has appeared as though his days with the Blues might benumbered, he seems to pop up and produce something special on thecontinent.
With so many of Europe’s superpowers at a low ebb right now, thisfeels like a year when one of England’s contenders could have aserious tilt at lifting Old Big Ears in Istanbul in May.
And with Tuchel at the helm, Chelsea have as good a chance as any of them.

Jamal Musiala, 17, shows why England are so desperate to get him with brilliant Champions League strike for Bayern

JAMAL MUSIALA showed why England boss Gareth Southgate is desperate to nab him from Germany’s grasp after scoring a brilliant strike in Bayern Munich’s win over Lazio.
The exciting midfielder, 17, netted in the 24th minute to make it 2-0 to the Germans in their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie win.

And in doing so he became the youngest ever English scorer in a Champions League game at 17 years and 363 days old.
Only former Barcelona and Stoke star Bojan Krkic has netted in the knockout stage at a younger stage.
Alphonso Davies started the move with a fine run before passing into midfield.
Musiala received the ball on the edge of the penalty area before driving low past Lazio goalie Pepe Reina.

He later wrote on Twitter: “A night to remember.”
His strike added to Robert Lewandowski’s 9th minute opener in Rome.
The goal took the Polish hitman, 32, past Real Madrid legend Raul and into third place on the all-time Champions League goal chart with 72.
Only Lionel Messi with 119 goals and Cristiano Ronaldo with 134 have scored more.

Leroy Sane then put Bayern in total control with a 42nd minute effort for 3-0.
It got worse for Lazio as Francesco Acerbi scored a calamitous own-goal in the 47th minute to make it 4-0.
It was Bayern’s 65th goal on an 18-game unbeaten run in the competition.
But Joaquin Correa did manage to pull one back for the hosts moments later as the game ended 4-1.
It marked another fine performance from teenager Musiala, who left Chelsea’s academy for Bayern in 2019.
But there is now an international battle for his future, with England and Germany both desperate for the ace to represent them.
Musiala was born in Germany but spent most of his childhood in England.
He made his Three Lions U21s debut in November, scoring against Albania on his second appearance.
And England gaffer Southgate is said to be a huge fan.
However, reports claim Musiala has decided he is going to play for Germany instead.
The wonderkid is expected to accept a senior call-up from Joachim Low next month ahead of his debut.
Germany’s next three games are World Cup qualifiers against Iceland, Romania and North Macedonia, meaning Musiala would be unable to ever play for England should he make his bow.
Musiala is also reportedly close to signing a new Bayern deal, ending any rumours of him joining Manchester United.

Chelsea set to face Atletico Madrid with exact same back three that were mauled 3-0 by Barcelona in 2018

CHELSEA are set to face Atletico Madrid tonight with the same three-man defence that lost 3-0 to Barcelona in 2018.
Thomas Tuchel’s men face a tough task against the LaLiga leaders in Bucharest this evening.

Chelsea had a night to forget at the Nou Camp in 2018

And the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie has been made even harder after Chelsea’s star defender Thiago Silva was ruled out yet again with a hamstring injury, having looked set to return against Atletico.
It means Tuchel must decide between Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma for the central spot in his back three to stop Luis Suarez and Co.
And should Christensen get the nod, as is expected, it would see Chelsea field the same trio who shipped three goals against Suarez’s Barcelona at the Nou Camp during Antonio Conte’s second and final season.
Chelsea drew the first leg of the last-16 tie in 2018, with Willian and Lionel Messi netting in a 1-1 draw.

The match saw a negative Blues side record just 26 per cent possession, with Eden Hazard controversially fielded as Conte’s lone striker.
But things got even worse for the then-Premier League champions when they returned to the Nou Camp.
They had 44 per cent possession but Chelsea shipped three goals, including a third minute strike to Messi.

Watch Chelsea fans tease Marcos Alonso with bizarre ‘don’t be slow’ chant as team arrive in Bucharest for Atletico clash

MARCOS ALONSO was treated to a curious new chant when arriving in Bucharest for Chelsea’s clash with Atletico Madrid.
The Champions League last-16 tie could see the left-back come up against the team his dad, Marcos Alonso Pena, starred for in the 1980s.

Marcos Alonso was bizarrely taunted in Romania on Monday nightCredit: Getty Images – Getty

And the Blues’ arrival at their Romanian hotel on Monday night saw the Spaniard greeted by fans.
Footage of the Chelsea squad getting off the team bus was accompanied by the chant: “Alonso be fast, don’t be slow.”
The exact origins of the chant, or the reasoning behind it, remain unclear.
Alonso, not recognised for burning pace or a major lack of speed, has become a more regular part of the team under Thomas Tuchel.

Having been exiled by Frank Lampard, the 30-year-old has featured in the last six games in all competitions.
Many expect him to start in the 8pm kick-off at Bucharest’s National Arena, ahead of Emerson Palmieri and Ben Chilwell.

Chelsea are facing Atletico in Romania due to coronavirus travel restrictions between England and Spain.
Ahead of facing the LaLiga leaders, Tuchel highlighted the physical test his players must contend with.

The German told reporters: “It’s a big test physically and mentally.
“They are a very experienced group, a very experienced club at this level, and an experienced and tough coach to play against.

Benfica XI of former stars would fight for Champions League after selling £450m worth of talent last decade

BENFICA’S business model of buy low, sell high has delivered domestic success but the £450million worth of talent leaving the club could have deprived them of greater glory.
A stunning array of star players have passed through the Lisbon club’s doors over the past decade, showcasing their eye for a gem.

An impressive XI can be constructed from former Benfica men – with plenty left spare.
The 2019 summer deal for Joao Felix, with Atletico Madrid paying £113m, represents by far their biggest sale but a mega 15 players left for between £20m and £35m in the past 10 years.
Manchester City’s new defensive stalwart Ruben Dias is the next most expensive exit after arriving in a £64m deal last summer to shatter David Luiz’s £22m effort.

His teammate goalkeeper Ederson follows with a defence of Nelson Semedo, Victor Lindelof and Fabio Coentrao banking Benfica £87m combined.
A pairing of Axel Witsel and Renato Sanches represents two central midfielders sold early on in their careers for huge profits.
And with Angel Di Maria and Goncalo Guedes joining them in a £121m midfield, there isn’t even space for Nemanja Matic.
The Serb bruiser left for Chelsea in 2014 for a ‘measly’ £21m, meaning he misses the cut for this line-up along with £13m playmaker Bernardo Silva.

The exit fees for Lazar Markovic, Nico Gaitan and Enzo Perez also exceeded £20m – and yet aren’t enough for our XI.

Ezequiel Garay and Nemanja Matic left for big fees yet are nowhere near the top of the rankingsCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd

Up front, Felix partners Wolves’ record buy Raul Jimenez to oust £27m Valencia signing Rodrigo.
Had all these players stayed, it isn’t hard to imagine Benfica reaching the latter stages of the Champions League and even threatening to win the competition.
Add in the likes of Jan Oblak, Joao Cancelo and Luka Jovic and suddenly the team looks nigh-on imperious.
Sure enough, the Portuguese giants do have two European Cups to their name but a decade that saw them reach just two Champions League quarter-finals and lose a pair of Europa League finals could have been very different.

Man Utd and Man City want Benfica’s Ruben Dias – here is why More
