Fiorentina 0 Man City 5 (agg 0-8): Ellen White and Sam Mewis score two each as visitors cruise into quarter-finals

GARETH TAYLOR praised Manchester City for clinically dispatching Fiorentina to cruise into the Champions League last eight.
Their opponents looked helpless as they were beaten 5-0 on the night, with Ellen White and Sam Mewis netting braces and Caroline Weir adding a penalty.

The Serie A side put up a fight, but they could not cope with the Manchester giants’ ruthlessness and lost 8-0 on aggregate over the two legs.
On his players’ performance, Taylor said: “The words I used afterwards with the girls was very professional.
“We played with humility, played with maximum respect to Fiorentina who played with high energy and maximum pressure.
“I think the way we challenged the balls, the way we were professional. The way we managed the game from the first to last minute was excellent.”

Despite going into the game with a four-goal cushion, City started ferociously and went ahead through Ellen White who linked up well with Lauren Hemp in the first 10 minutes.
The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute when Esme Morgan’s headed cross was handled in the box
And Caroline Weir made it 2-0 with her cool finish from the spot.
White doubled her tally after being set-up again by Hemp to make it 3-0.

Not to be outdone, Sam Mewis went on a dazzling solo run before smashing the ball past Katja Schroffenegger to extend City’s lead just before the hour mark.
But she wasn’t done yet and latched onto a Chloe Kelly pass 12 minutes before full-time to complete Fiorentina’s humiliation.
The way City disposed of the Italian side has made them serious contenders for the coveted European trophy this season.
And Taylor’s side will find out who their next opponents in Europe will be in the Champions League quarters draw on March 12.

And Weir, who gave the Serie A Women’s outfit a headache, for believes her team can go all the way.
The Scotland playmaker said: “The last two seasons I’ve played in the Champions League we’ve been knocked out fairly early by Atletico Madrid.
“So yeah I’m desperate to go far in this competition and I think we’ve got the squad to go and do it.”

Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes defends Cristiano Ronaldo over Champions League exit and says Juventus team to blame

BRUNO FERNANDES has come to Cristiano Ronaldo’s defence following Juventus’ shock Champions League exit last night.
The Italians were stunned by 10-men Porto in Turin as the visitors progressed to the quarters on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Fernandes insists Ronaldo is not solely to blame for the last-16 defeat to PortoCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The defining moment came in extra time when Sergio Oliveira’s free-kick flew under Ronaldo’s outstretched leg and past Wojciech Szczesny’s outstretched hands.
Ronaldo has since come under fierce criticism for failing to stand his ground in an attempt to block the long-range strike – instead jumping and turning his back.
And with Juventus also in danger of losing their nine-season Serie A title streak to Inter Milan, there are even question marks over Ronaldo’s future at the club this summer.
However, Manchester United star Fernandes insists his Portugal team-mate remains one of world football’s best players.

And Juve’s defeat cannot be blamed on Ronaldo when there were ten other players on the field wearing the famous black-and-white strip.
Fernandes told Gazzetta: “Ronaldo? Cristiano is one of the greats in the history of football.
“His mentality inspires those who practice this sport. He has won a lot, but no one can win alone.
“I understand that his presence in Juve had created enormous expectations for the Champions League.

CHELTENHAM SPECIAL OFFER – GET THE FIRST RACE FAVOURITE AT HUGE 50/1 PRICE

“But when a team loses, they lose as an entire squad, not a single player.
“I’m not surprised (by the result). Porto has a winning mentality, plays aggressive football and I expected them to create problems for Juventus.”
Meanwhile, Juve boss Andrea Pirlo bemoaned the Porto free-kick that condemned his side to another early elimination.
He said: “We choose the players to go in the wall. It had never happened before that they’d turn around. Maybe they felt it was so far out that they didn’t sense the danger.

“It was a mistake, it usually doesn’t happen, the players didn’t feel it was a dangerous situation and conceded a goal.
“When you make four big errors over two legs in the Champions League Round of 16, you can get eliminated.
“We didn’t get it wrong when Porto were down to 10, as all we could do was try to spread them out by moving the ball side to side and packing the penalty area with bodies. That is how the goals arrived.
“It will take a few days to cancel this game from our minds, but then we must face every game with the right attitude, realise we’re still only in March and have time to climb the Serie A table.”

Is Diogo Dalot eligible to play for AC Milan vs Man Utd?
Diogo Dalot has been on loan at the Milan club this season after falling out of favour at United.
The full-back was brought to the Theatre of Dreams in 2018 from Porto but has since failed to nail down a starting berth.
Much is expected of the right-back, who is still only 21 and could yet have a bright future with the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was happy for him to leave on a temporary basis earlier this campaign, joining Milan last October on a season-long loan.
Dalot has appeared 20 times for AC so far in 2020/21, netting twice and also chipping in with two assists.

The full back has gained valuable experience on loanCredit: AP:Associated Press
And there is NO clause in his loan deal stopping him playing against his former club.
As such, Dalot could line-up against United in either of the two legs of their Europa League showdown.

Speaking ahead of the tie, boss Ole said: “[Milan] are on the up and have done really well this season.
“I’ve been so impressed by [Zlatan], and Diogo we know. He went there to get some experience at a big club and he’s learned a lot.
“He’s played a lot more games this season, kept fit and, hopefully, we can give him some bother!”

When is AC Milan vs Man Utd and how can I watch on TV?
Man Utd face AC Milan on Thursday, March 11.

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi head-to-head Champions League record after pair’s worst season in Europe since 2005

CRISTIANO RONALDO and Lionel Messi will BOTH be forced to watch the Champions League quarter-finals on the telly for the first time since 2005.
Ronaldo’s Juventus crashed out on away goals to Porto before Messi failed to inspire Barcelona to another memorable comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

As Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe continue to send shockwaves around Europe with their goalscoring performances, there is certainly a feeling that the guard is starting to change.
But how do Messi and Ronaldo compare in the Champions League?
Between them, they have lifted the trophy nine times in 15 years – Messi four, Ronaldo five.
In each of the other years, the eventual champions have knocked out one of them on their way to glory, with Bayern Munich the most-recent example in emphatic fashion last season.

Ronaldo made his Sporting Lisbon debut earlier than his long-term rival but his side did not qualify for the tournament in 2002-03, meaning he made his bow in 2003-04 with Manchester United.
But Sir Alex Ferguson’s side lost to a Porto team managed by a certain Jose Mourinho who went on to the win it.
The 2004-05 season was Messi’s first in the Barcelona senior side and, before this week, was the last time neither player reached the last eight.
It was a time when YouTube and Google Maps launched, Charles and Camilla married, Shayne Ward won The X Factor and Brangelina became a thing.

Barca were knocked out by Chelsea while AC Milan got the better of United before losing to Liverpool in the final.
Messi got his hands on the famous cup in 2006, although he didn’t play in the final against Arsenal, before Ronaldo did so two years later after United beat Barca in the semis thanks to Paul Scholes’ wondergoal.
They met in the 2009 final when Barca beat the Red Devils in Rome and then two years later as Messi inspired a semi-final win over Ronaldo’s Real Madrid before seeing off United again.
That was the last time they played each other in the competition until the group stages this season – Ronaldo missed the tie in Turin due to coronavirus but inspired Juventus to the top of Group G with two goals at the Nou Camp in their 36th head-to-head clash.
Since then, though, Barcelona have won the Champions League just once – in 2015 – while Ronaldo and Los Blancos have picked up four in that time, including a hat-trick between 2016 and 2018.
Messi’s Catalan giants suffered dramatic exits to Roma, Liverpool and Bayern before this season’s defeat to PSG.
For Ronaldo, he left Real in 2018 for a new challenge at Juventus with the Old Lady desperately hoping he can inspire them to European glory for the first time since 1996.
But so far, they are yet to get beyond the quarter-finals with shock defeats to Ajax, Lyon and now Porto.

Inside Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘hot’ half-time team talk that prevented PSG from collapsing to Barcelona defeat again

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN star Marquinhos has revealed how Mauricio Pochettino’s ‘hot’ half time team talk helped the French side keep their nerve against Barcelona.
PSG booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions’ League with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

However, Lionel Messi proved he might just be human after all by fluffing his lines on the stroke of half-time when he missed a crucial penalty.
A goal then would have put Barcelona 2-1 up at the break and really tested the bottle of Poch’s Parisians, four years after the most famous comeback in the competition’s history.
On that famous night Barca smashed PSG 6-1 at the Nou Camp to overturn a 4-0 first-leg deficit, digging out three goals in a never-to-be-forgotten final seven minutes.
Last night’s task was even more ridiculous as they attempted to overcome a 4-1 first-leg loss – on enemy territory this time.

However, Pochettino’s inspired rallying cry to his troops at the interval helped to ease any fears, according to Brazilian defender Marquinhos.
The 26-year-old told RMC Sport: “We’re not going to give away all the secrets.
“It was hot, it reflected the difficult moments we had, we lacked a lot in the defensive phase, they took advantage with their full-backs.
“He asked for more engagement, with little videos. This is what made the difference.”

CHELTENHAM SPECIAL OFFER – GET THE FIRST RACE FAVOURITE AT HUGE 50/1 PRICE

Pochettino, who led Tottenham to the Champions League final two years ago, admitted afterwards he was pleased with how his side responded to his words.
The Argentine, 49, said: “We suffered a lot in the first half, we struggled with the first pass.
“Psychologically it was a test because we talked a lot about the past. In the second half we showed a different face.
“What is clear is that we thought too much in the first half. We were thinking too much about qualifying, that’s what I told the players.
“I asked them to play. Of course I was not happy, I told the players that, but sometimes it happens and we were more combative in the second half.
“The important thing is that we are through. We must put negative thoughts away from us.”
Poch and his side are now eagerly awaiting the draw for both the quarters and the semi-finals on March 19.
The last eight ties are scheduled to be held on April 6/7 (first legs) and April 13/14 (second legs).
PSG return to action in Ligue 1 on Sunday when they host Nantes as they aim to look to close the two-point gap on leaders Lille.

How world looked last time Messi and Ronaldo missed out on Champions League quarter-finals with YouTube just launching

FOR the first time in 16 years, there will be no Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Ronaldo’s Juventus were dumped out on away goals by Porto on Tuesday night.

And his long-term rival Messi followed just 24 hours later as Barcelona could not mastermind another spectacular comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.
It could have been very different had his missed penalty been retaken on the stroke of half-time with replays showing Marco Verratti WAS encroaching.
But as Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe light up European football, Messi and Ronaldo are left to lick their wounds.
One or both players have been involved in the last eight of the competition in each of the previous 15 seasons – going on to win it nine times between them in that period.

But their premature exits could be good news for Liverpool fans – it was in that 2004-05 campaign they famously lifted old Big Ears in Istanbul in unforgettable fashion.
At the time, Ronaldo was making a name for himself at Manchester United and a 17-year-old Messi scored his first senior Barca goal in the May of the campaign.
United crashed out to eventual finalists AC Milan while Barca squandered a first-leg lead to get stunned by Chelsea.
So, what was going in the world in 2005?

Lionel Messi’s missed penalty vs PSG SHOULD have been retaken as replays show Verratti ‘nearly on Barcelona star’s back’

LIONEL MESSI’S missed penalty should have been retaken as replays show Marco Verratti WAS encroaching.
Pundit Joe Cole went as far as to suggest the PSG player was ‘nearly on Messi’s back’.

    — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) March 10, 2021

The Barcelona superstar, 33, had a glorious chance to put his side 2-1 up at Paris Saint-Germain on the stroke of half-time.
A goal at that point could have transformed the tie.
The Spanish giants would have needed just two more goals in the second half in Paris to level the tie at 8-8 and take it to extra-time.
But the Argentine saw his spot-kick brilliantly saved by Keylor Navas, who managed to deflect the ball on to the crossbar.

It then looped back into the middle of the penalty area where Verratti got up unchallenged to head it out for a corner.
Referee Anthony Taylor was told to wait for the corner to be taken while English officials Stuart Attwell and Paul Tierney reviewed the footage on VAR duty.
Somehow they concluded there was no problem – despite replays clearly proving the Italian midfielder was well inside the D at the moment Messi took the strike.

He’s nearly on Messi’s back! He’s so far inside.
    Joe ColeBT Sport pundit

BT Sport pundits Joe Cole and Owen Hargreaves picked up on the blunder.

Ex-Chelsea man Cole said: “We got back to VAR, I’m at pains to do it, but how have they not picked up that he’s [Verratti] encroaching there?
“He’s nearly on Messi’s back! He’s so far inside.
“If you run the tape on, you see, he actually affects the game when he clears it with the header.
“We want to get so pedantic about rules and laws and technology but the people looking at it can’t see that – I don’t understand where we are.

Kylian Mbappe put PSG in front on the night from the penalty spot after Taylor watched replays of Clement Lenglet’s accidental trip on Mauro Icardi.
He became the youngest player to score 25 Champions League goals and put his side 5-1 ahead on aggregate.
Messi equalised with a thunderbolt into the top corner but Barca struggled to break through Navas – in part down to Ousmane Dembele’s poor finishing – as it ended 1-1 on the night.
The result sent Barcelona crashing out and ensured neither Messi nor Ronaldo – whose Juventus side crashed out to Porto – would be in the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 2005.

    BONNE NUIT DE PARIS
And a good night for Paris.
PSG are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after standing up to a Barcelona onslaught at the Parc des Princes.
In truth, the home defence – marshalled superbly by Marquinhos – never looked troubled after Lionel Messi had a penalty saved in first half injury time by the equally-excellent Keylor Navas.
The spotkick stop meant that Messi was unable to add to his astonishing equaliser – a swerving blaster from 30 yards – and means the Argentine bows out before the Last Eight for the first time since 2007.
With his future at the Camp Nou still in doubt, has the Champions League seen the last of Messi in a Barcelona shirt?
PSG, on the other hand, go marching on, led by Kylian Mbappe, whose four goals over the two legs ensured their progress, and made the 22-year-old the youngest to ever reach 25 goals in the competition.
Can they go one step further than last season to win the tournament? Write them off at your peril.
That’s all from the French capital, but tune in on Friday week to discover who Mauricio Pochettino’s men will face in the next round.
    Goodbye.

FT: PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
A fine match – and a brilliant tie – ends with PSG advancing into the Champions League quarter-finals. The Catalans performed extremely well at the Parc des Princes but couldn’t add to Lionel Messi’s sensational first half equaliser, especially after the Argentine had a penalty saved by Keylor Navas. PSG defended admirably, and have their reward for a superb first leg display at the Camp Nou.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE GOES!

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
90+2. Into the second of three added minutes, and finally Barcelona’s collective shoulders have dropped.
It’s not going to be Barca’s night. It’s not going to be Messi’s night.

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    90. After soaking up so much pressure, PSG nearly cap the tie in what would have been fitting style.
Mbappe brings the ball the forward on the left, considers Icardi to his right but chooses to go it alone. He then skips past Lenglet with ease and weighs up Ter Stegen, only to crash a shot high and wide of the near post.

The striker may have had more yellow cards in the second half than he has had touches.

    85. Barcelona register another attempt at goal, but Griezmann’s blast over from just outside the area is only going to eat up a few more seconds of time.
PSG are almost there. The demons of 2017 are close to be exorcised.

    84. Marco Verratti goes off and is replaced by Rafinha.
Who wants to sign my petition demanding the return to two substitutes, numbered 12 and 14?

    PSG 1-1 BARCELONA (5-2 AGG)
    82. The game is now being played almost entirely around the edge of the PSG penalty area.
Alba, Griezmann, Messi, Trincao and Moriba all have the opportunity to either shoot or cross, but instead go looking for the extra space in the hope of creating better.
