Xabi Alonso on Liverpool’s ’embarrassing’ first-half in Istanbul vs AC Milan and Barcelona inflicting his ‘worst’ defeat

XABI ALONSO opened up on Liverpool’s ‘painful’ and ’embarrassing’ first-half in the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan in Istanbul. The Spaniard revealed he was ‘angry with himself’ at half-time before the Reds’ iconic comeback.

Liverpool were 3-0 down to the Italian giants and seemed doomed at the break.
But in one of the most historic comebacks in football, Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Alonso himself scored in six second-half minutes to nick a 3-3 draw.
The Merseysiders eventually won the penalty shootout but the 39-year-old admitted he couldn’t see it coming at half-time.
He told team-mate on the night Jamie Carragher’s Greatest Game podcast: “I was angry at myself, thinking ‘we can’t throw it away so easily, this is a beautiful chance’.
“I was kind of embarrassed with what we were doing.
“More than thinking about the others it was painful, that was first (how I felt). Later, Rafa (Benitez) changed. I thought ‘let’s see how this works’.
“To hear the boos from the fans was important because they didn’t want to kill us but we thought ‘let’s try and give them something to believe’, try to have some hope.”
Alonso eventually left Anfield after five years with the club and joined Real Madrid in 2009.

And during his Los Blancos career he faced Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team which is widely considered one of the greatest sides ever assembled.
And one particular Clasico stuck in his mind for all the wrong reasons after Barca thrashed Jose Mourinho’s Real 5-0 in 2010-11.
Having started the game alongside Sami Khedira, Alonso said: “We knew in that moment if we were too nice they were going to kill us.
“The league game in the Nou Camp we lost 5-0 and that was the worst night I’ve ever lived on a football pitch.
“After 20 minutes I wanted to leave, to go home, shower and to go home.
“It was so painful. It gave us a big determination. We couldn’t be too nice or we wouldn’t have beaten them (the next season).”

Mbappe given just 3/10 by L’Equipe and NOBODY gets above a 7 as they lay into PSG striker’s ‘ghost’ display vs Man City

KYLIAN MBAPPE became the latest victim of L’Equipe’s notoriously tough player ratings for his ‘ghostly’ performance on Wednesday night. In Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City, the Frenchman was unable to hit the back of the net.
Kylian Mbappe could not produce his trademark excellence against Man CityCredit: Reuters
In fact, he failed to fire off a single shot while tallying the fewest passes (19) and touches (26) of any outfield player who started the game.
Mbappe also earned just the one foul, compared to Neymar’s five, and won two of his five duels, which fared poorly up against Riyad Mahrez winning eight of his 13 and Bernardo Silva five of his seven.
The performance led to French daily L’Equipe dishing out a devastating 3/10 player rating to the 22-year-old.
Their evaluation described his outing as ‘ghostly’ and stated: “He did not take advantage of the space and did not punish City’s slowness. He made a bad choice in the 85th minute in a clear counter-attack.”
Only goalscoring defender Marquinhos earned a 7/10 for PSG while Neymar, dismissed midfielder Idrissa Gueye, Leandro Paredes and boss Mauricio Pochettino were all handed 4/10s.
PSG shot out the traps at Parc des Princes and led early on, before goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Mahrez turned the tide.

The French daily’s headline criticised the winning goal – ‘At the foot of the wall’
Mbappe’s brightest moment could have made it 2-0, when he dazzled the City defence and fired in a great cross that Marco Verratti perhaps should have met.
The striker will be relying on another man of the match performance to knock out the Premier League club.
He has already produced magnificent displays away to Barcelona and Bayern Munich earlier in the competition.

While many viewers felt Wednesday’s game was a classic to-and-fro Champions League affair, L’Equipe’s ratings told a different story.
Even City’s stars were marked down with Kyle Walker a 4/10 and 7/10s awarded to only De Bruyne and Mahrez.
Only a handful of players have ever been awarded a perfect 10/10 by the newspaper, including Robert Lewandowski, Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Arsene Wenger slams ‘stupid’ PSG for ‘mental collapse’ in 2-1 Man City loss after becoming ’emotionally aggressive’

ARSENE WENGER has lambasted Paris Saint-Germain for being ‘stupid’ and ’emotionally aggressive’ as they lost 2-1 to Manchester City.Les Parisiens finished the Champions League semi-final first leg tie with ten men as the Citizens came back from behind to score two vital away goals.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye was sent off during the 2-1 defeat against Manchester CityCredit: Alamy
Brazilian defender Marquinhos put the home side in front in the 15th minute, before Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored after the break.
The Algerian’s winner was easily avoidable as his free-kick somehow went straight through the wall which caught out goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
And things got worse for Mauricio Pochettino’s men after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for a nasty tackle on Ilkay Gundogan with PSG chasing the game.
Former Arsenal boss Wenger believes that the Ligue 1 giants lost the game due to their poor discipline as they ‘mentally collapsed’ in the second half.
Speaking on beIN SPORTS, the Frenchman, 71, said: “From the defenders turning their back, it’s between [Leandro] Paredes and [Presnel] Kimpembe.
“Why do you lie a guy on the ground if the guys in the wall open the wall?
“I personally believe that the second goal is not acceptable for that level. It’s not the first time we see players turning their back and City took advantage of that.
“But I must say in the second half PSG were protective and not progressive any more. Is it because they were not physically capable?

Just seven players have managed to score a hat-tricks of CL hat-tricks
“After the 1-1, they collapsed completely. They become emotional and aggressive in a stupid way.”
Wenger has also stated that PSG’s second half shocker could be due to them being second in the French top-flight, with the club losing eight league games this term.
He added: “What was very interesting tonight is that you could see that when it was 1-1, PSG mentally collapsed.
“This is as well the consequence of this team losing eight games in the league. This has an impact in this kind of situation.
“When it’s 1-1 the team knows they have lost many games, they carry that. It’s not like the season before when they were unbeatable in the league.
“You could see the confidence dropped considerably and the mental impact when Man City equalised, for the semi-final of a Champions League, was too big.”

Gary Lineker forced to pull out of BT Sport Champions League coverage on Wednesday after Covid scare with colleague

GARY LINEKER was forced to pull out of BT Sport’s Champions League coverage on Wednesday night amid a Covid scare. The 60-year-old had been due to analyse the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City from the BT Sport studios in Stratford, East London.

Massively disappointed not to be on @btsport tonight for such a great game. A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team. Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines, but it was decided to be ultra cautious & get tested before returning to work.— Gary Lineker 💙 (@GaryLineker) April 28, 2021

But he was forced to pull out at the last minute after a Covid scare.
Stand-in host Jake Humphrey revealed at the start of the broadcast: “There is no Gary Lineker tonight as unfortunately one of the team from last night has today had a positive Covid test result.
“As a precaution we have decided that no-one from yesterday’s team returns until they have been tested and declared completely safe to do so.”
Lineker also tweeted as the show began, writing: “Massively disappointed not to be on BT Sport tonight for such a great game.
“A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team.
“Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines, but it was decided to be ultra cautious & get tested before returning to work.”
He later put out another tweet with his feet up in front of a big screen, writing: “Well, this is different.”
The presenter was on air for Tuesday night’s coverage of the 1-1 draw between Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Current Covid rules mean anyone told by NHS Track and Trace they have come into contact with a person infected with Covid-19 should self-isolate for 10 days.
The England legend revealed he had the vaccine on Twitter, back in February, joking: “Had the vaccine and England Cricket lost Root & Stokes whilst I was getting jabbed. Nobody said anything about those side effects.”
The news comes after Lineker vowed to ‘never work on the European Super League’ as he blasted former club Barcelona for agreeing to the controversial plans.
The BBC and BT Sport pundit made it clear he would not be part of the ESL circus – which sent shockwaves throughout football last week.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “To be clear, if it actually happens, I will never work on this European Super League.”
The former England striker also took aim at old side Barcelona, where he scored 52 goals in 137 games.
Last week, all six English clubs quit the hated European Super League in a massive victory for fan power.
Chelsea were the first to break ranks after fans gathered outside their Stamford Bridge ground to voice their anger, with Manchester City following soon after.

Then Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all announced they were quitting the project hours later.
Gary Lineker also hit out at Jurgen Klopp for being ‘spectacularly tone deaf’ over the European Super League fallout.
The Liverpool boss was asked his thoughts following the fierce backlash and collapse of the money-making farce – and said he believed pundits ought to “calm down.”
Lineker was far from impressed with Klopp’s reasoning and believes the fans have every right to continue making their voices heard.
He fired back on Twitter: “A handful of owners try to tear our game apart and may well try to do so again, and we’re just told to ‘calm down and move on’.
“Huge admirer of Klopp but he’s spectacularly tone deaf here.
“Without the fans of our beautiful game it would be much uglier today.”

Watch Phil Foden leave SIX PSG stars in his wake in electric dribble as Lescott says he is MORE important than De Bruyne

PHIL FODEN left SIX Paris Saint-Germain players in his wake with an exceptional dribble in the Parc des Princes. And Joleon Lescott hailed the Manchester City sensational as ‘more important than Kevin De Bruyne’.

Phil Foden produced a phenomenal dribble to shake off six Paris Saint-Germain playersCredit: PA
With 87 minutes on the clock in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, Ruben Dias dispossessed Neymar ten yards inside the PSG half.
Livewire Foden, 20, picked the ball up and had one thing on his mind.
Using his pace, balance and sublime close control, he skipped away from the tumbling Neymar as well as Danilo Pereira who missed his tackle.
Ander Herrera, Alessandro Florenzi, Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe all tried their best to stop the England star.
But none of them could get close enough to stop him bearing down on goal.
Foden did manage to get a shot away from 18 yards but could not direct his effort either side of Keylor Navas for what would have been a superb solo goal.
He had also fired straight at the PSG goalkeeper late on in the first half as City chased an equaliser.
Foden managed to get all three of his shots on target and had a 95 per cent pass accuracy while goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez ensured a 2-1 away win for Pep Guardiola’s men.

But even before his performance, the academy graduate was earning plenty of plaudits from the BT Sport pundits – with Lescott reckoning he is more crucial than his £300,000-a-week team-mate De Bruyne.
The ex-City defender said: “I would argue that Phil is the most important player in the team.
“In the club, you would say Kevin De Bruyne, he has got the contract to suggest that, but on current form and impact in games, Phil Foden for me is the most important player.
“He contributes so much to the team going forward, his energy, he leads the line with work-rate off the ball and his quality in possession is second to none.”
Owen Hargreaves reckons De Bruyne is still No1 but was quick to highlight Foden’s impact.
The two-time Champions League winner added: “I think anybody can see he is fabulous, his end product is so good.
“His effect on the game is remarkable, and 14 goals and nine assists for a young man is scary.
“He can obviously play in so many different positions. That is what he is great at, always checking his shoulder, and he has that little bit of magic in him.

“I think to the point now where you talk about the most important player in Manchester City’s team, it is Kevin De Bruyne I think.
“But I think Phil has earned right now to the point where Raheem Sterling is on the bench, that Phil Foden is the one they are looking to for the big goals – like he scored against Dortmund.”
Joe Hart joined in the praise and believes the Three Lions talent is playing football with complete freedom right now.
He said: “He is clean, his rhythm is good at the moment.
“Football can seem a really, really tough game at times, but he is definitely in a moment now where, when he is putting his boots on he is not thinking about anything else other than how he is going to affect the game and people getting him the ball.”
Marquinhos gave PSG the perfect start with his early header but City fought back in an impressive second half.
De Bruyne’s cross went all the way in before the hosts’ wall parted for Mahrez’s free-kick and Idrissa Gueye saw red all within 13 minutes.
PSG must score at least twice at the Etihad next Tuesday to have any chance of stopping Foden and City reaching the final.

    THAT’s ALL FOR TONIGHT
That’s all from me and the coverage of this Champions League first leg semi-final tie between PSG and Man City.
What a game of football it was and Man City have one foot in Istanbul! Can they go all the way and win it? Who knows.
Plenty of footy still to come this week starting with some Europa League semi-final action.
Man Utd are in action against Serie A outfit Roma, and Arsenal take on former boss Unai Emery who now manages Villarreal.
And then onto the weekend, there’s some Premier League action.
    Goodnight!
    PEP’s ASSESSMENT
Pep Guardiola told BT Sport: “Of course, we start really well after we concede the goal after we felt the pressure.
“Sometimes every player has to do more touches, every player do just one touch to put the ball out, but that’s normal.
“For a lot of people it’s our first time in the semi-finals and they want to do it well.
“The last 10 minutes of the first half was good, the second half excellent in every department.
“We scored two goals away which is so important. A hard job to do in six days.”
    CITY SLICKERS
PEP GUARDIOLA, his wealthy employers and of course, City’s fans, have waited a long time for this.
But surely, they are on their way to the Champions League final.
Any tournament which ends in Istanbul needs a famous recovery and City did exactly that last night as they pulled PSG’s pants down with two goals in the space of seven minutes.
This was stunning stuff from City. It was their 18th successive away win and by some distance, the finest of them all.
So impressive in the first half and leading with a goal from Marquinhos, PSG simply lost the plot and also their cool.

    DE BRUYNE’s THOUGHTS
Goal-scorer and Man City captain De Bruyne told BT Sport: “It was a game of two halves.
“We started well in the first ten minutes and had some control but they are an unbelievable team with great quality upfront.
“It was a shame the way we conceded. After 25 minutes we changed our press and it became better, and the second half was much, much better.
“The way the first goal goes in was a bit lucky but we played football and yeah, we did well there.
“The first half we were too rushed, and that’s not the way we are set up as a team.
“In the second half, we tried to find the spaces more patiently. The progression we made as a team was good.
“There is still a game to go, and we have to concentrate on that.
“We know there are moments when we will suffer, we know how good they are, but we know we have the quality to play good in the second game.”
    SECOND HALF CITY STORM
De Bruyne equalised for Man City, catching Navas out at the far post who was expecting Stones to get a touch on the ball.
    Vital away goal.

And then Mahrez stepped up and sent a free-kick through a small hole in the wall and into the bottom corner.
Navas caught out for both goals, but can’t be blamed for either.

    FULL-TIME STATS
Man City dominated the second half to give themselves a massive advantage heading into the second leg.

    FT: PSG 1-2 MAN CITY
Man City started the second half on the front foot and pinned last year’s finalists, PSG, inside their own half.
And City found themselves level with a slice of luck.
A Man City corner was worked across the edge of PSG’s penalty area to De Bruyne
The Belgian shifted the ball onto his right foot and delivered what looked like a cross toward the far post, catching out Navas to draw City level.
PSG looked a different team to the team that played so well in the first half.
And Parades conceded a sloppy free-kick in the 71st minute.
De Bruyne shaped up to shoot, but left it to Mahrez who bent the free-kick through the wall and into the bottom-left corner.
PSG lost all composure, and minutes later, Gueye was sent off for a reckless challenge on Gundogan.
Still all to play for in the second leg next Tuesday, but Man City have a massive, massive, two away goal advantage.

When is the Champions League final, and where is it being held?

The Champions League final will take place on Saturday, May 29.
The Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey will host the showpiece this season.
The kick-off time has yet to be decided, though it is expected to begin at 8pm BST.

Are English fans allowed to attend the Champions League final?

With the UK’s ban on non-essential international travel set to expire on May 17, Chelsea and/or Man City fans should be allowed to travel to Turkey for the match.
However, the Turkish government will decide if any tickets will be allocated to travelling supporters of the participating clubs.
Uefa have not placed any restrictions on ticket sales meaning Turkey is allowed to hold the game with any number of fans it chooses.
Coronavirus cases in Turkey remain high, meaning the country is likely to be on the amber list when travel resumes.
This would see fans from the UK forced to quarantine for ten days on their return and take a pre-departure Covid test plus PCR tests on Day 2 and Day 8 after landing.
There has not yet been any suggestion from the UK or Turkey that fans could avoid quarantine through a bubble arrangement.

The Ataturk Stadium plays host this year
    Can I get tickets?
UEFA have revealed in their latest update that details are to follow soon on how you can get tickets to the big one.
