Liverpool 2 Ajax 1: Matip scores last-minute winner and first Champions League goal for Reds to rescue Klopp’s men

JURGEN KLOPP needed a reaction after the worst night of his Liverpool career. It was not spectacular or particularly convincing but the beleaguered Liverpool manager saw his team dig deep and deliver a huge victory.

Six days after a night of humiliation and a 4-1 battering at Napoli, a largely frustrating evening was sealed with a winner from Joel Matip.
It seemed as though Klopp’s team could have played all night without getting a second goal but in the 89th minute, Matip appeared to nod in a header.
Ajax thought they’d cleared that off the line but goal-line technology confirmed it was well over.
And so maybe, this is lift-off for Liverpool but there is still a hell of a lot of improving to do.

Liverpool were frustrated in the final third with Ajax defending really well.
But Klopp, understandably, looked relieved at the end.
Equally, at least Mo Salah scored although even his early goal was not enough for him to look back to his best.
Salah has struggled since a crushing loss against Senegal in a World Cup play-off at the end of March.

He had struck just six times in the subsequent 22 games, with seven of those matches – and two goals – coming this term.
Even so, the player who signed a big, fat contract in the summer is still some way short of what he has achieved.
Aside from the result, the other hope – as requested by Klopp 24 hours earlier – was that the fans would observe the minute’s silence.
It was only a minority of fans who spoiled it but they were noisy enough for Portuguese official Artur Dias to blow his whistle after just 25 seconds.
Yet a powerful start was then followed by an opening goal and you would have bet on a comfortable home win.
Playing intricate football is all well and good but sometimes, just hammering the ball up the pitch is just as effective.
That is exactly what keeper Alisson did as his long punt was met by Luis Diaz who did exceptionally well in leaping above Jurrien Timber.
Diogo Jota, preferred to both Bobby Firmino and Darwin Nunez, steered the ball into the direction of a scampering Salah.
He used his right foot to take the ball into the area and then used his left to smash an unstoppable shot past Ajax keeper Remko Pasveer.
For Salah, it was his first goal in eight Champions League matches, going all the way back to a 2-0 win at Inter Milan in February.
Diaz, one of the few Liverpool players enjoying a good season, should have made it 2-0 but pulled a shot wide.
Salah was then denied by some decent defending from former Manchester United left-back Daley Blind.
Yet despite being in complete control of the game, Liverpool were then left to wonder how on earth they let Ajax back into the game.
It was a good goal following a terrific, patient build-up.
Not for the first time, fingers were pointing at Trent Alexander-Arnold.
He was guilty of ball watching and failed to pick the run of Steven Berghuis behind him.
The winger, who failed to make a single League start for Watford in a brief spell from 2015, attempted to pick out Steven Bergwijn but found Ghanaian Kudus and he hammered an absolute belter of a shot via the underside of the bar.
It was as powerful a shot as you will ever see.
Alisson might arguably be the best in the world but he was not keeping this thunderbolt out of the net.
Even so, Liverpool did not seem rattled.
Van Dijk found himself unmarked at a couple of corners but on each occasion, his effort was blocked by Ajax keeper Pasveer, who also delivered a double save to deny Alexander-Arnold.
With 25 minutes left, and very little happening in the second half, Klopp made his changes with Nunez and Firmino introduced to spark some life into the attack.
Ajax came close when an unmarked Blind wasted a simple header.
Once again, Alexander-Arnold was all over the place.
And with a few minutes left, Nunez wasted Liverpool’s big chance by failing to score.
Keeper Pasveer then got a touch to a cross from Nunez which was enough to divert the ball beyond Diaz who would have definitely scored.
Salah’s shot was deflected wide via the post for a corner and from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner Matip rose to score.
With the trip to Chelsea on Sunday now postponed, Liverpool’s next match is against Brighton on October 1, one you would expect and the next match is at home to Rangers three days later.

And fellow German Jaissle said: “After the draw I was thinking that we would meet Thomas Tuchel.
“And on Wednesday we would play against him. It’s a bit of a pity — I know him personally.”
But Jaissle insists Salzburg will still be prepared to go up against Potter as they have done their homework on him.
He added: “We had to be professionals.

And Jaissle said: “It will be a bit different in terms of the build-up.
“But as soon as we have kick-off, the full focus will be on the match.”
It won’t only be Potter’s first game in charge of Chelsea, but also the first time he would have attended a Champions League match.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Potter said: “Off the top of my head, I don’t think I have (been to a Champions League game).
“I think it’s a good time to go in the dugout, why not!? Wherever we start it’s a heck of an introduction.

Before the game, a large-scale police operation successfully contained the risk of fan violence in the city of Marseille.
It followed after a stadium brawl in Nice last week left dozens injured, causing authorities to be on high alert ahead of Frankfurt’s trip.
Tensions escalated when police marched a group of around 500 Frankfurt ultras up a long road – with ticketed fans taken to the game in coaches under police escort.
But those without tickets stayed on site at a fan zone with police nearby.

Earlier in the day, Frankfurt fans had congregated in one of the city’s main squares with police blocking every entry point.
Hundreds of riot police then escorted the crowd away at around 4:30 p.m, only for a brief skirmish with locals to break out.
Following last Thursday’s mass brawl between fans from Nice and Cologne, before a Europa Conference League game, security measures have been ramped up.
Police said five arrests were made Monday night when large groups from Frankfurt and Marseille were narrowly prevented from confronting each other.

Dozens of police vans were stationed around the city’s Old Port area with some armed police present.
Midfielder Jesper Lindstrom gave Frankfurt the lead just before half time for the visitors.
And the first-half goal proved enough for the German side to travel back with three points.

BT Sports commentator says what all fans are thinking about Ajax’s keeper as camera zooms in on him against Liverpool

FOOTBALL fans were left stunned after seeing Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer in action against Liverpool this evening. The Dutchman has started every game for the Amsterdam outfit this season.

Fans were left questioning just how old he wasCredit: Getty
But supporters were still taken aback when Pasveer pulled off an excellent save to deny a Virgil van Dijk bullet header in the first-half.
The cameras zoomed in on Pasveer after the stop, showing his entirely grey head of hair tied back in a bun up close.
Fans were all immediately left wondering just how old the Ajax stopper was.
And luckily BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher cleared things up straight away.

Fletcher immediately pointed out that Pasveer is 38-years-old – double the age of Liverpool teenager Harvey Elliott.
Social media was quick to react after seeing Pasveer and his luscious grey locks.
One joked: “Ajax’s keeper looks about 50 years old.”
While another said: “Yeah this Ajax keeper looks like he should be riding a dragon on Game of Thrones.”

And a third wrote: “This ajax keeper is pushing 40 and he’s making these kind of saves.”
Although those thinking Pasveer was no spring chicken were shown the error of their ways after the stunning save.
The goalie was called into action again just before the break – and again he responded with an expert double save to deny Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Mohamed Salah did manage to get one past Pasveer in the 17th minute to open the scoring.
Ajax then hit back just before the half-hour mark through a stunning strike from young Ghanian talent Mohammed Kudus.
But Joel Matip popped up with an 89th minute header to claim a valuable three points for Liverpool. More

But they had to leave it late at the Jose Alvalade Stadium with both of their goals coming late on.
Substitute striker Paulinho headed Sporting into the lead in the 90th minute as he got on the end of Pedro Goncalves’ corner.
Arthur then replaced former Spurs starlet Marcus Edwards in the 92nd minute, with the Brazilian off celebrating moments later from a stunning solo effort.
The 24-year-old picked up the ball down the left channel after being found by Paulinho, where he skipped past Cristian Romero before nutmegging Emerson Royal.

And he then coolly slotted his strike under the legs of Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to send the hosts into delirium.
He was mobbed by his jubilant team-mates with the player showing boss Ruben Amorim why he signed him from Estoril at the start of the month.
Fans were left in awe by Arthur’s audacious double nutmeg, as one Twitter user said: “F***ing hell that Arthur lad for Sporting has just scored an unreal double nutmeg.

Watch Marcus Edwards’ ‘Maradona-like’ dribble against Tottenham as he justifies Pochettino’s Messi comparison

FORMER Tottenham starlet Marcus Edwards proved why Mauricio Pochettino likened him to Lionel Messi as he starred for Sporting Lisbon against Antonio Conte’s men.The 23-year-old, who came through the academy ranks at Spurs, showed his old side what they were missing in Sporting’s 2-0 Champions League victory on Tuesday.

Former Spurs starlet Edwards was likened to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino in 2016
Edwards featured just once for Spurs’ senior side – a cameo appearance against Gillingham in September 2016.
His old mentor Pochettino heaped praise on him prior to the League Cup fixture, where he claimed he reminds him of Argentine ace Messi.
Poch said: “His qualities… it’s only looks – his body and the way that he plays – remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.”
But he failed to feature again for Tottenham, with the attacking midfielder released in 2019, resulting in the player joining Portuguese club Vitoria.

And after rebuilding his career in the Primeira Liga, he signed for Sporting earlier this year, where he has become a key member of their squad.
His quality was there for all to see in his first match against his old side as he almost broke the deadlock just before the break at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.
Edwards picked up the ball near the halfway line, where he skipped past Eric Dier, before shrugging the England international away where he then glided past Ivan Perisic.
He then played a neat one-two with Francisco Trincao where he skipped past Cristian Romero in the box, before seeing his close range shot brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris.

BT Sport commentator Ian Darke was blown away by his mazy run, as he stated, “That was Messi like”, before claiming it was reminiscent of Diego Maradona’s goal against England at the 1986 World Cup.
Football fans were also left in awe by his dribbling abilities, as one Twitter user said: “Messi approves this, he was just Messi-esque for a minute until the finish.”
This Spurs supporter commented: “We have a buy-back clause for this guy right? Right??”
A third added: “What a baller!! Football manager legend too! Unreal dribbling.”
Another fan posted: “You have to score that man! would of been one of the greatest goals ever.”
Lauding Edwards, one remarked: “He’s ready for the Prem, bring him back to these shores.”
Meanwhile one gushed: “Looks like the new Maradona.”

Sporting Lisbon 2 Tottenham 0: Spurs concede two in horror injury time collapse to lose first match since April

IT WAS a brutal way to end Tottenham’s unbeaten run this season but not wholly unexpected.Spurs may have begun the campaign with five wins and two draws from their opening seven games, but performances have largely been workmanlike rather than spectacular.
Tottenham were stunned in the closing minutes at SportingCredit: AFP
The Portuguese side smashed in two goals in injury time to secure a 2-0 winCredit: Reuters
For that reason, a result like this always felt like it could be on the cards and so it proved, albeit in dramatic circumstances.
Fellow subs Paulinho and Arthur Gomes did the damage in stoppage time with the former heading in a corner and the latter producing a fine solo goal to send the Estadio Jose Alvalade potty.
Antonio Conte could do little more than shove his hands in his pockets after seeing a stalemate snatched away at the death.
But arguably Sporting deserved it with Tottenham old-boy Marcus Edwards at times looking electric in a game otherwise lacking a spark – until the very end.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
Edwards was once compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino when the pair were still at Tottenham and the 23-year-old almost produced a goal worthy of the Argentine genius in first-half stoppage time.
While the mystery surrounding Son Heung-min’s barren start to the campaign continued as the South Korean made it eight games without a goal now.
Last season’s joint-winner of the Premier League Golden Boot claimed last week that he was not worrying about his drought because he was still getting chances.
But last night he did not have a single shot before trudging off in the 72nd minute to be replaced by Dejan Kulusevski.
    Most read in Football
Conte is desperate for one half of his dynamic duo up top – along with Harry Kane – to break his campaign duck soon.
Yet with displays like this, it would not be unfair on the 30-year-old to see him start Saturday’s home game against Leicester on the bench.
Spurs players wore black armbands to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, while there was a reasonably well-observed minute’s silence before kick-off in Her Majesty’s honour as well.
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim talked up Edwards before the game, even tipping him to play for England one day.
And it came via the talented 23-year-old, who left Tottenham on a free in 2019, that the first opportunity of the game arose.
Edwards burst away down the middle and prodded it wide to highly-rated Pedro Goncalves – previously of Wolves – whose effort was heading to the far corner before Hugo Lloris pushed it wide.
On 25 minutes Richarlison wasted a decent chance, by his standards, as he nodded Ivan Perisic’s cross down into the ground, allowing the keeper to claim it easily.
Given it was the Brazilian who had won last week’s Champions League opener at home to Marseille with two bullet headers, he probably should have done better.

At the end of the first half came Edwards’ thrilling moment.
Edwards said Pochettino was just being “nice” when discussing his Messi comparison in an interview this week – but his mazy run in stoppage time had all the hallmarks of a classic Messi dribble.
The forward picked up the ball midway through Spurs’ half, brushed off not one but two challenges from Sporting academy product Eric Dier and then another from Perisic.
Playing a one-two with Francisco Trincao as he burst into the box, Edwards held off another failed tackle from Cristian Romero but was denied a stunning goal when Lloris pushed wide his close-range poke.
Spurs came out for the second half looking to up the ante, and they came close to a breakthrough with a flurry of early chances.
Emerson Royal had two of them, heading Kane’s excellent cross into the ground a la Richarlison, then failing to beat Sporting keeper Antonio Adan when played through by Kane’s clever, quick free-kick.
Richarlison then fired another effort wide but after that Spurs’ final ball seemed to desert them, winding up Conte on the touchline.
Paulinho celebrated after scoring in the 90th minuteCredit: Getty
Arthur Gomes’s superb solo effort wrapped up the winCredit: Reuters
Though that could not be said for Perisic’s wicked delivery with 20 minutes to go which was almost too good as it fizzed across the six-yard box, catching Kane by surprise as he failed to get on the end of it.
Lloris was probably Spurs’ best player on the night and he looked to have saved them when tipping wide a goalbound shot from former Manchester City wing-back Pedro Porro late on.
Yet from the resulting corner, sub Paulinho got in front of both Royal and Kane to flick into the far corner.
Amazingly, there was still time for another goal and from Gomes, who was only introduced after the breakthrough.
He picked it up on the left, breezed past the flailing Spurs’ backline and found the corner.
It was an infuriating way to lose it.

But perhaps it can serve as a reminder to anyone getting carried away with Spurs’ early-season results that they are by no means the finished article.
