Chelsea ratings: Mount at his peak as he torments pal Tomori but Sterling struggles to make meaningful impact vs Milan

CHELSEA made it four wins in a row under Graham Potter with a comfortable evening at the San Siro. The Blues were helped by ex-defender Fikayo Tomori got himself sent off for tugging Mason Mount down as last man.

Jorginho made no mistake from the spot and then Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added another on 34 minutes as the Blues jumped from bottom to top of Group E within a week.
    Here’s how SunSport’s Joshua Jones rated Potter’s men…
    Kepa Arrizabalaga – 6
A routine evening for the Spanish goalkeeper, who made it three clean sheets in a row and now appears to be Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.
    Trevoh Chalobah – 6
After a near-faultless display, a slip threatened to let AC Milan in but recovered well to win the ball back.

    Thiago Silva – 6
His 100th Champions League appearance – and certainly one of his easier ones on his return to this iconic stadium.
    Kalidou Koulibaly – 6
Almost got caught out at the back post when Sergino Dest had space – but the Senegal star may have just done enough to put the American off as he blazed off target.
    Reece James – 7
Seemed to be looking at his brilliant best as he got up and down the right wing.
But his evening was cut short after a collision with Theo Hernandez and hobbled off as a major injury concern with the World Cup six weeks away.

    Mateo Kovacic – 6
A return to the midfield duo that served Thomas Tuchel so well – and it did the business once again as they dictated the game.
    Jorginho – 6
Added to his penalty at Everton on the opening day with another one here, in trademark fashion – despite the best efforts of an AC Milan fan and their laser.
    Ben Chilwell – 4
Genuinely didn’t notice he was playing, honestly. Very ineffective.

Mason Mount was the pick of the players and starred for 45 minutesCredit: AFP
    Mason Mount – 8
Mount is proving himself under yet another manager and was at the peak of his powers in 45 stunning San Siro minutes.
He lured Chelsea academy pal Tomori into dragging him down for the penalty then played an inch-perfect left-foot first-time pass for the second.
    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7
Back-to-back Champions League goals for the first time since 2017 with Borussia Dortmund, and took his finish perfectly.
Looks full of confidence as he leads the line – evidenced by his front-flip celebration.
    Raheem Sterling – 4
Offered very little in his hour on the field and was rightly taken off – plus was booked.
Could feel hard done by as Mount’s pass was probably meant for him… before Auba ran through and scored.

Raheem Sterling didn’t manage to make much of an impactCredit: Getty
    SUBS
Conor Gallagher – 6 (for Mount, HT)
Looked busy and put himself about, trying to replicate Mount’s creativity. Picked up a late yellow.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 5 (for James, 62 mins)
Slotted in comfortably to replace the crocked James.
    Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 6 (for Sterling, 62 mins)
Almost slipped Aubameyang in for a third before Dest tackled.
Kai Havertz – 5 (for Aubameyang, 79 mins)
Touch let him down when ball came over the top and he was in. Accidentally blocked a team-mates shot for the last kick of the game.
Marc Cucurella – N/A (for Chilwell, 90 mins)
Came on for the last few minutes to see out the win. More

AC Milan 0 Chelsea 2: Old boy Tomori’s red card helps Blues to comfortable win as Potter extends unbeaten run

NEW CHELSEA kicked off with the old boys and left Italy battered and bruised but with a memorable win.Any hope of friendship and goodwill between former team-mates went out of the window with Fikayo Tomori’s sending off after 18 minutes.

The one-time Chelsea academy graduate received a straight red for pulling down Mason Mount as he lost a sprint finish into the penalty box against one of his best pals in the game.
Milan were furious with the decision and after taking out their anger on German ref Daniel Siebert, turned on Chelsea.
Ex-Blues striker Olivier Giroud squared up to Mount, who got back up in the formidable shape of Reece James, a young man it’s best to stay on the right side of, even if you are a 6ft 4in battle-hardened Frenchman.
James and Giroud were booked but the tone was set for a game which turned boys into men.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
Ultimately a fourth win on the trot for new Chelsea boss Graham Potter and the club’s first at this magnificent stadium in northern Italy in the face of a ferocious atmosphere and a sell-out crowd.
The performance should not be underestimated even though Milan were down to ten men for 72 minutes against a team which is suddenly mean, lean and now a decent fighting machine.
Stand-in skipper Jorginho refused to be blinded by the laser pens being shone into his face and calmly pumped home the spot kick with a customary little skip in the run up to set his team on the way.
Tomori and Mount spent more than 15 years representing Chelsea together in one shape or another. Their friendship should survive but may be tested for a time as a result of a game-changing incident.

Milan will argue that after Tomori withdrew his arm from Mount’s shoulder as they challenged for the ball, the Chelsea player took another two strides before hitting the deck.
But there is no doubt Mount was clean through on goal and winning their two-horse race in the box. Dangerous territory for a defender to start clawing at a fast receding opponent.
Maybe frustration got the better of Tomori. Having been sold by Chelsea last year he has been determined to prove a point to his old club and to England boss Gareth Southgate, having been overlooked in the recent round of internationals.
Last week’s 3-0 Champions League hiding at Stamford Bridge was not his best night either. The quietly-spoken Canada-born centre-half admitted being ‘very angry’ at the performance.
But where it all got too much for Tomori, Chelsea stayed mostly cool and slowly turned the screw with numerical advantage for more than 70 minutes on a big pitch in a vast stadium.
Tomori was better off out of it as his new team fell apart under the weight of pressure and as tempers frayed.
Raheem Sterling was booked for a follow through with his knee on Rade Krunic. James was lucky to get off scot free with a clumsy lunge at Hernandez from the side.
Mount would play a key role in this hard-fought win as he first won a free kick as compensation for a slap in the face in the centre circle.
From the dead ball, Chelsea worked their magic and a move of more than a dozen passes climaxed with him prodding the ball into the box with both Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bursting through the defence.
Striker Aubameyang, back in the team after being rested at the weekend through sheer workload, overtook his shorter-legged team-mate and blasted the ball home at the near post with a ruthless finish. He was not letting his friend have that one.
Aubameyang now has three goals in his last four games and Chelsea have conceded only one goal in that spell to emphasise the growing confidence under Potter.
Even with six changes to the team that thumped Wolves 3-0 on Saturday, it was impossible to see the join.
Potter rested key men like Aubameyang, Mateo Kovacic, James and Sterling. All reinstated tonight. He was never afforded the luxury of such riches at former club Brighton.
What made it even more frustrating for Chelsea’s old boys in the Milan line up is that they had their chances to threaten.
Giroud in particular rightly put his head in his hands when he missed a glaring chance to equalise on 27 minutes.

He was unmarked seven yards out but headed wide the kind of opportunity he used to gobble up in Europe during his three and a half years at Stamford Bridge.
In the past week, Chelsea have stuck five goals past the Serie A champions without reply. Potter has a reputation for attacking football, the Italians for resolute defending. There were several lessons learned in Milan. More

England World Cup fear as Reece James subbed off injured after jarring knee for Chelsea at AC Milan

REECE JAMES went off injured during Chelsea’s clash with AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The Blues defender was forced to make way just after the hour mark when he jarred his knee at the San Siro.

England right-back James was then replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta.
James went off with Chelsea’s medical staff holding his knee and he will be assessed further today with the squad now back in London.
There has not yet been any confirmation of the severity of the Chelsea man’s injury.
Manager Graham Potter said: “Reece, we are hoping will be ok but it is too early to say, we need 24-48 hours to give us anything more than that.”
After the game, James wrote a message on Twitter saying he is staying positive.
He wrote: “Fingers crossed it’s not a bad one. Love for all the messages, I appreciate you all.”

The 22-year-old’s problem will be of major concern to national team boss Gareth Southgate with one month to go until the World Cup.
England suffered a major blow last week when it was revealed that Kyle Walker is a doubt for the tournament after undergoing groin surgery.
Now there are fears James has his own fitness concerns following the knee issue he picked up in Italy.
Southgate does still have alternative options at right-back – a position England are blessed in.

Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both vying for a place in the squad that will go to Qatar.
However, Alexander-Arnold has been out of favour under Southgate, with James, Walker and Trippier all preferred to him.
And the Liverpool man’s form has left a lot to be desired so far this season.
England’s first game of the tournament comes against Iran on November 21.
They then face USA four days later, before their final group stage match against Wales on November 29. More

I made my name at Stoke under Tony Pulis, but now my team are taking Champions League by storm with possession game

MOST British fans are unlikely to  recognise Brugge’s manager during Wednesday night’s Champions League clash at Atletico Madrid. But 6ft 1in Carl Hoefkens will be a familiar figure to supporters of Stoke and West Brom.
Ex-defender Carl Hoefkens was a fans’ favourite for Stoke City in the Championship from 2005-2007Credit: Getty Images – Getty
Hoefkens became Brugge boss in May and his side are shining in the Champions League despite a mixed start domesticallyCredit: AFP
The former right-back, 44, became a Potters cult hero in his two-season spell — thanks in no small part to his flowing black hair and trademark headband.
He was voted fans’ player of the year for 2005-06 in his first campaign with the club before being part of the Baggies  promotion winning squad in 2007-08.
But 13 years — and at least one harsh haircut — later Hoefkens is masterminding Club Brugge’s perfect start to Champions League Group B, which they top with three wins from three.
The Belgian champions lost boss Philippe Clement to Monaco in January and installed Alfred Schreuder. But the Dutchman left for Ajax just four months later.

Hoefkens worked as youth coach and first-team assistant under both men and was promoted  after Schreuder’s departure.
Many Brugge supporters doubted his credentials and there are concerns domestically.
Three defeats and a draw in his first 11 league games leaves them trailing leaders Antwerp by eight points.
But Brugge — who lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the 1978 European Cup final — are in dreamland in Uefa’s elite club competition.

They have never reached the knockout stage since it became the Champions League in 1992.
A win tonight guarantees they reach the last 16, and just four more points ensures their progress as group winners.
And the club’s jubilant fans have Hoefkens — who spent four years with Brugge as a player after his Baggies spell — to thank.
He  favours possession-based football, despite playing under Tony Pulis, and has made his side impenetrable at the back.
Incredibly, they are yet to concede in Europe this season  — the only team other than Group C leaders Bayern Munich to boast such a record.
Hoefkens’ side kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 home win against Bayer Leverkusen. A historic 4-0 triumph at Portuguese giants Porto in match two last month equalled the club’s record away win in the competition.
And former Leicester winger Kamal Sowah and Arsenal target Ferran Jutgla scored either side of half-time to down Diego Simeone’s Atletico 2-0 last week.
Hoefkens was part of Pulis’ blood-and-thunder Stoke side as a right-backCredit: Reuters
Hoefkens went viral for his emotionless reaction to each of his side’s four goals in Porto.
And after the Atletico win left Brugge on the verge of club  history, the 22-cap former Belgium international admitted his cold demeanour is deliberate.
He said: “I never enjoy games. It wouldn’t feel OK, I need to remain objective.
“It’s important not to get caught up in taking emotional  decisions during the match.”
Hoefkens played 678 matches in his 20-year career but last week revealed he prefers dictating from the touchline.
He said: “Would I have wanted to be on that pitch?
“I would have liked to have won against Atletico as a player at some point, yes.
“But I’d much rather coach than play. And I don’t reckon I’d have made it into this team!” More

Chelsea fans all say the same thing as Fikayo Tomori picks up red card against Blues and gives away penalty for AC Milan

CHELSEA fans celebrated Fikayo Tomori’s blunder – and all made the same joke. The former Blues defender, now at AC Milan, endured a nightmare against his old team-mates at the San Siro.

He got on the wrong side of Mason Mount who burst into the penalty area.
And after clumsily hauling his fellow academy graduate down to the ground, the referee pointed to the spot and brandished the red card on 18 minutes – the first of the 24-year-old England defender’s career.
Chelsea supporters immediately jumped on to Twitter – and thanked Tomori for his services following his £30million 2021 transfer.
One said: “Agent Tomori, we love you.”

Another wrote: “Haha agent Tomori – always a Blue.”
A third quipped: “Glad to see that Tomori are still Chelsea through and through.”
And another user commented: “I see Tomori is still playing for Chelsea… nice.”
One writer joked: “Fikayo Tomori has played Chelsea 3 times in his career for Derby and AC Milan.
“He’s conceded 7, scored an own goal and been sent off.  Once a blue, always a blue.”
Tomori followed in the footsteps of Tal Ben Haim by becoming the second former Chelsea player to be sent off against the West Londoners in the Champions League.

Israeli defender Ben Haim was shown a red for Maccabi Tel Aviv in November 2015.
But debate raged on social media as to whether or not Tomori should have been sent off at the San Siro.
Some believed it was just contact tussling and therefore not a penalty.
However, once the referee gave the foul, he had no choice but to give a red card because Tomori made no attempt to play the ball and denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
To make matters worse, Tomori – who initially refused to leave the pitch – then had to watch as Jorginho slotted in from the penalty spot.
Just 13 minutes later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored to make it 2-0 and put the Blues in total control against ten-man Milan.

Thank you for joining our coverage of AC Milan vs Chelsea.
Potter’s Blues claimed a fourth victory on the spin and a third clean sheet in a row.
They go top of the group in the Champions League just seven days after being bottom.
Another good performance from the team was overshadowed by the injury to James, with the repercussions of that likely to be felt tomorrow or the day after.
Gareth Southgate will be among the most anxious as he waits to hear the fate of one of the country’s best right-backs.
From everyone at SunSport, take care and good night.

Expected Goals: AC Milan (0.48) 0-2 (2.30) Chelsea
    James on Twitter

    Mount on Potter
    “It’s been brilliant.
“You can see the way we play, you know we’re a big threat going forward and been solid at the back and built from the back and able to create chances for each other – we’re going in the right direction and hopefully that continues.
“No, not too much (training changes).
“It was just trying to get in the box and also connect the midfield to the strikers and be free to get assists and get goals.
“It’s been happening for me in the last couple of games but I want more and hopefully that can happen in the next few games coming up.”
    Mason Mount quotes
Speaking to BT Mount added: “Yeah (back to his best) I feel good.
“I’m enjoying it, playing well and we’re scoring goals so that’s the most important thing.
“Hopefully, next I can get a goal because it’s been coming but I just haven’t been able to finish it off yet, but I’ll take the assists for my team-mates.”
    On Mason Mount
“Yeah really important (Mount to the way the team plays) obviously he was on a yellow card and he plays a lot more football so we just felt at half-time it would be sensible to give him a breather.
“I thought he was fantastic, got in some good spaces, attacked the goal well, won the penalty for us and was a constant threat for us.
“So really pleased with him from the start and he’s a really important player.”
    More from Potter
“Yeah that’s the trick (to keep the team’s cool) you want to try and control the game but not be too passive because you see the atmosphere here and one action can result in a goal and then all of a sudden the stadium erupts and they feel like they’ve got the extra man again.
“So balance between having good structure, being mature and keeping the ball while at the same time trying to threaten the goal and score again.”
    Potter on the sending off
“Yeah it’s hard from where I’m sitting. I’ve not watched it back but it looks like he’s got his hand on him and Mason’s through on goal from where I’m sitting but i need to take a look back at it again clearly.
“Nice on the penalty, nice for Jorgi to score and it was a nice move to get in there in the first place but it is what it is, sometimes they go for you.”
    Graham Potter quotes
Speaking to BT after the game Potter said: “Yeah, to come here and win is not easy that’s for sure so credit to the players, they were really good I thought.
“We obviously had a bit of luck with them going down to 10 men but i thought overall the performance was good, nice to keep a clean sheet again and it’s fantastic for us.”

    FULL-TIME: AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
What a bizarre seven days for Chelsea.
Last Tuesday they were bottom of Group E, but now they are top of the group with their two wins against Milan.
The other result in the group tonight currently sees Salzburg and Dinamo with a goal apiece.
Nevertheless, Chelsea make it back-to-back wins in the Champions League and four on the bounce in all competitions.
A mature performance from Potter’s side, with plenty of good signs and good foundations being laid to build upon the former Brighton manager’s philosophy.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
90+1. Now into injury time with Milan still pushing for at least one goal.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    90. Well they may be losing on the scoreline but Milan have definitely left the Chelsea team battered and bruised.
Yet another yellow from the ref goes the way of the Serie A champs, this time with Ballo Toure on the receiving end.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    89. Chelsea set to make their final change with Marc Cucurella about to come on for Ben Chilwell.
And another yellow has been given out to Tonali.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    85. It’s deja vu, with yet another booking being dished out.
This time it’s gone the way of Gallagher.
That now means there has been eight cards – seven yellows one red – given out tonight.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    79. Kai Havertz comes on for Aubameyang for Potter’s fourth sub of the night.
Meanwhile, Milan make a double change with Leao and Hernandez making way for Ballo Toure and Origi.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    75. Close for Aubameyang.
Chelsea transition quickly after winning the ball back and feed the ball into Loftus-Cheek.
He then strides towards the Milan penalty area before picking a pass to Aubameyang.
He then controls the ball but it gets slightly caught under his feet and Dest is able to get back to make a goal-saving block.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    73. The fans also remain in full voice despite the circumstances.
They were impressive at the Bridge last week as well.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    72. Milan still have spirit left.
They’re not threatening nearly as much as they likely would with 10 men, but Milan are not giving up without a fight.
The extra man is counting for a lot here though ultimately.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    67. Another yellow for Milan, this time with Pobega going into the book.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    65. Chelsea dictating proceedings now.
They’re having a lot of glory picking out the pockets of space between the lines.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    60. Meanwhile, Giroud and Bennacer have also gone off with Pobega and Rebic replacing them.
    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    59. Huge chance for Dest to halve the deficit.
Leao produces some lovely skill down and whips the ball into the area, with it coming all the way through to Dest.
In acres, he then lashed a shot at goal but it went high wide past Kepa’s goal.
However, bad news for England and Chelsea with James going down to seek treatment again.
Veteran Azpilicueta replaces James while Ruben Loftus-Cheek also comes on for Sterling.

    AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea
    55. James down injured here following a challenge against Hernandez.
However, after a few minutes down on the turf and with the medics, James is able to continue.

Leipzig move up to second with six points, four behind leaders Real Madrid who drew 1-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk, while Celtic remain bottom with one point and two games remaining.
In a frantic first half, Leipzig dominated possession while Celtic had the better chances as they hit the woodwork twice and registered the only shot on target through Kyogo Furuhashi, but neither team were able to find the clinical edge.
The noise level at Celtic Park cranked up after Matt O’Riley’s low shot struck the post and Greg Taylor’s rebound rattled the bar before Furuhashi headed over a cross from Sead Haksabanovic.
Celtic made a sluggish start after the break and Leipzig looked the more dangerous as Willi Orban drew a swift save from Hart while Dominik Szoboszlai granted the hosts a reprieve after losing his footing with a clear sight of goal.
Celtic’s Daizen Maeda met substitute Aaron Mooy’s cross but steered his first-time effort wide before Werner and Forsberg punished Celtic on a night of missed opportunities for Ange Postecoglou’s side
