But Roberto Firmino’s and Darwin Nunez completely swung the game in Liverpool’s favour before super sub Mo Salah put the tie to bed with a sensation six-minute hattrick.
And then the Reds romp was capped off with a stunning finish by Harvey Elliot.

    That’s all from Ibrox
And all for Rangers’ Champions League campaign.
The Scottish Premiership side still have two games to play in Group A, but are unable to progress from this stage after losing their fourth straight game.
It all started so well for the Glasgow side too with Scott Arfield firing them ahead inside 17 minutes – their first goal in Europe’s premier competition for 12 years.
However, seven minutes later and Liverpool were level – and then the gulf in class began to show.
After the break, the Reds rattled in six further strikes, three of them from substitute Mohamed Salah in an astonishing six-minute spell that broke Champions League records.
The eventual 7-1 scoreline puts the Premier League outfit on the verge of the Last 16, and in fine fettle for Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City.
Thanks for joining us, and goodnight.
    Inexplicable late showing from Gers
Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst says his team’s performance in the second half is going to take some processing after they were blown away by Liverpool.
The Scottish Premiership side conceded six in the second period with Liverpool substitute Mo Salah grabbing a six-minute hat-trick.
To make matters worse, the Gers lost Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack to injuries as they crumbled after the elation of taking an early lead.
The two injuries didn’t help, but after that it went really quick and we conceded too many easy goals. We were not in the game with our heads in the last 25 minutes. I cannot explain at the moment, I have to process this.Giovanni van BronckhorstBT Sport
    Ecstatic Klopp praises Liverpool character
Happy days are here again for Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool boss has been a prickly character this week, but had a huge smile on his face when discussing his side’s performance in Glasgow.
The German coach saw the Reds concede another opening goal – this time to Scott Arfield’s 17th minute opener – but was left impressed at how his players responded in the raucous environment of Ibrox.
A really good performance in difficult circumstances. Everyone could hear the difference in the atmosphere after the opening goal and before we started scoring. This could have been a massive, nearly impossible challenge – but we kept playing football especially in the second half.Jurgen KloppBein Sport
    Mo-jestic cameo from super sub
Eyebrows were raised when Mo Salah was dropped to the bench for this evening’s Champions League clash, but 22 minutes was all he needed to make history.
The Liverpool ace struck a brilliant hat-trick in just six minutes and 12 seconds – the fastest treble in the history of the competition.
Rumours of his demise may have been premature.

    Rock bottom Rangers crash out
They finally scored a goal, but Rangers are out of the Champions League with two games still to play.
The Scottish Premiership side have lost all four matches in Group A, and have now conceded a total of 16.
But Liverpool are now on the verge of joining Napoli in the knockout stages.

    Reds set themselves for City
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes his side have built themselves a great platform to kickstart their season.
The Reds face Manchester City at the weekend, and the Dutch ace reckons have timed their return to winning ways just right.
Winning 7-1 here isn’t a bad thing. Everyone expected us to win but we take it each game by each game, that is how we approach every game including the big one on Sunday. We will prepare well, recover and get ready for Manchester City.Virgil van DijkBT Sport
    Match stats from Ibrox
On a crazy night in Glasgow, Liverpool score seven times from just nine shots on target.

Full time – Rangers 1-7 Liverpool
What a second half showing by Liverpool!
Rangers 1-7 Liverpool – Gomez yellow card
    90. A first card of the night! It’s yellow for now, but could it get worse?
Joe Gomez is caught in possession by Alfredo Morelos, and then hauls down the Rangers striker as he turns goalwards.
There’s a long way for the Colombian to travel, but a VAR check takes place to decide whether the defender denied a goalscoring opportunity.
Gomez gets lucky, and the decision stays as a caution.
    Rangers 1-7 Liverpool
    87. Harvey Elliott has his first Champions League goal – eventually!
There’s a long VAR check but the word comes through that the teenager’s strike is onside and good to stand.
Mo Salah turns provider as he darts into the box on the left, and squares a pass to Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese forward should score but shoots straight at Allan McGregor before Elliott follows up to convert.
    It’s a thumping at Ibrox!

    Rangers 1-6 Liverpool
    84. It has become a very difficult evening for Rangers now in what has become a half-empty Ibrox.
    Rangers 1-6 Liverpool
    81. Mo Salah has three and Liverpool have six! It’s astonishing.
It’s a classic Salah strike too, cutting in from the right flank and curling left-footed into the far corner.
Allan McGregor was absolutely rooted to his spot as the ball span past him for the sixth time this evening. As he picks it out of the back of his net, Salah celebrates in front of the ecstatic Liverpool fans.
The Egyptian’s hat-trick is officially timed as six minutes and 12 seconds, and is a new Champions League record.

    Rangers 1-5 Liverpool
    80. Mo Salah has two and Liverpool have five!
Slick play from the Premier League side down the right involving Fabinho, Thiago and Diogo Jota ends with the Egyptian substitution coming in off the right.
He has defenders ahead of him, but rather than risking a first time shot through a crowd, Salah simply traps the ball to buy himself a split second of time and a yard of space.
What follows is a crisp left-footed shot that catches Allan McGregor out to find the back of the net.

Rangers 1-4 Liverpool – Liverpool substitution
    79. A final change for the Reds sees James Milner on.
It spells the end of Ibrahima Konate’s evening.
Rangers 1-4 Liverpool – Rangers substitutions
    76. With the game up, Giovani van Bronckhorst makes a trio of changes.
The Dutch coach throws on Alfredo Morelos, Scott Wright and Rabbi Matondo.
They replace Antonio Colak, Ryan Kent and Fashion Sakala.
    Rangers 1-4 Liverpool
    75. Another Liverpool goal of exquisite skill and strength that is made to look simple.
Mo Salah has only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, but he already finds himself on the scoresheet.
The Egyptian brilliantly holds off Borna Barisic to control a dropping ball inside the area, and then toe pokes past Allan McGregor from a ridiculously tight angle.
Liverpool are flying, Rangers are falling apart.

Rangers 1-3 Liverpool – Liverpool substitution
    73. Another change for the visitors.
Diogo Jota comes on for the two-goal hero Roberto Firmino. There will be no hat-trick tonight for the Brazilian, but he can expect a start against Manchester City at the weekend.
    Rangers 1-3 Liverpool
    71. Straight up the other end, and a sliding Konate nudges Sakala’s cross back to Alisson.
The Rangers fans don’t know whether to appeal for a backpass or for a handball, and, as a result, their claim lacks confidence.
    Rangers 1-3 Liverpool
    70. At one end, Mo Salah has a great chance to make it four within seconds of his arrival.
He latches on to a lofted pass, and tries to fire under McGregor, who somehow keeps the ball out by saving with both legs.
Rangers 1-3 Liverpool – Liverpool substitutions
    68. Jurgen Klopp takes this moment to make a triple substitution, and they are changes that undoubtedly make Liverpool stronger.
On come Scotland captain Andy Robertson, Mo Salah and Thiago for Kostas Tsimikas, Darwin Nunez and Jordan Henderson.

Tottenham 3 Eintracht Frankfurt 2: Son double and Kane penalty seal nervy win after ten-man rivals score late goal

TOTTENHAM fans have not seen enough of Son Heung-min’s trademark camera-pose celebration this season for their liking. But on Wednesday night, the South Korean was picture perfect.

A shock early goal shipped to Daichi Kamada proved to be merely a jolt to the Spurs system as Son led a blistering, first-half fightback.
He levelled on 20 minutes with a fine finish – celebrating by taking his black armband off and pointing it to the sky in tribute to Tottenham’s beloved fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone who passed away last week – before Harry Kane put the hosts ahead with a penalty.
Confidence was clearly coursing through Son’s veins at that point as he thumped home an awesome volley to make it 3-1 with nine minutes to go to the break.
He ran to the corner shaking his hand as if to say his shot had been too hot for goalkeeper Kevin Trapp to handle – which it most certainly was – before striking his snapper routine in front of the cameras.

Antonio Conte, meanwhile, went even more nuts on the touchline than normal as he raucously celebrated the goal with his backroom staff.
The Italian surely knew then that his Spurs were on their way to a huge three points which would put them top of Group D.
Tuta’s rapid-fire red card after the break looked to ensure it, though a late Faride Alidou header ensured a nervy finish, which should have been extinguished by a second spot-kick for Kane which, amazingly, he blazed over.
It was breathless stuff but in the aftermath Conte’s main takeaway was that his favourite Son was looking back to his best.

It has been a curious start to the season for Tottenham’s No7, who shared last term’s Premier League golden boot with Mo Salah after hitting 23 goals.
He began it back in his home country during Spurs’ preseason tour of South Korea, where Conte gave the local press what they wanted by mimicking Son’s camera pose alongside the forward at a packed-out press conference in Seoul.
But when the stuff that really mattered began, Son looked strangely sluggish, failing to net in his opening eight games and struggling to make an impact.
It led to him being benched against Leicester before the international break, to which he responded in remarkable style by hitting a 14-minute, second-half hat-trick as a sub.
Yet that was followed up by blanks against Arsenal, Frankfurt last week and in the win at Brighton on Saturday, meaning that maybe his early-season malaise was not quite over.
But on Wednesday, he was electric in everything he did.
That rapid pace which has been synonymous with his game but lacking at times this term was back and caused Spurs’ German guests all sorts of problems.
Frankfurt may be inconsistent, as proven by a win over Bundesliga table-toppers Union Berlin and a loss to the division’s bottom side Bochum either side of last week’s stalemate at home to Spurs.
But in Europe, and particularly on the road, they are no mugs.
They did not lose at all away from home during their triumphant Europa League campaign last term, winning at Real Betis, Barcelona and, memorably, West Ham.
Oliver Glasner’s side had also already won at Marseille this season too.
Kane blazed a penalty over in stoppage timeCredit: AFP
So when Eric Dier’s gaffe paved the way to the visitors taking an early lead, one wondered if another famous win on the continent was on the cards.
England man Dier failed to control a routine pass from Cristian Romero, allowing Jesper Lindstrom to seize the ball.
Hugo Lloris managed to push away the Dane’s cutback, but only into the path of Sebastian Rode, who squared it for Kamada to find the net.
It was a blow but Spurs have been impeccable at home so far this season, winning all five of their games, and they did not panic.
Within six minutes, they were level thanks to the old Kane-Son combo.
Emerson Royal, often maligned by Spurs fans, should take credit too for feeding Kane, who played the ball through to the fleet-footed Son.
The 30-year-old’s excellent first touch got it out of his feet and his rolled finish past Trapp belied a man who has struggled to find the target this term.
It was the 50th goal combination between Kane and Son in all competitions, further solidifying their position as the deadliest duo in Premier League history.
Son possibly should have had a penalty moments later when blocked by Kamada, but referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande waved away his protestations.
The Spanish whistler then bafflingly denied Kane a spot-kick soon after when the England captain had clearly been felled by Kristijan Jakic.
It was a successful night for Spurs boss ConteCredit: Getty
Luckily, VAR intervened and instructed the man in the middle to look at the pitchside monitor. He did and eventually came to the correct call.
Kane has had his joint-best start to a Premier League season with eight goals in his opening nine matches, but had failed to score in all three of Spurs’ Champions League games.
If there was any resulting pressure on his shoulders as he waited to take his penalty, there was no sign of it.
Trapp went the right way, diving low to his left, but still got nowhere near it.
Son then added some serious sauce to the comeback with his exocet volley from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s lofted cross.
Spurs’ star from the Far East was simply too good for Frankfurt’s backline, summed up by Tuta receiving two yellow cards in three minutes after the break for fouls on the ex-Hamburg man.
    Read More on The Sun
Alidou’s late header sparked some drama at the death, made all the more mad by Kane firing over from 12 yards after Bryan Gil had been felled.
The craziness was eventually brought to a close with Spurs holding on to the win thanks to Son’s timely return to the limelight.

Rangers 1 Liverpool 7: Super sub Mo Salah scores fastest-ever Champions League hat-trick with stunning SIX-MINUTE blitz

NO MATTER how dodgy things look on the domestic front, the Champions League remains a wonderful getaway for Liverpool. After Roberto Firmino underlined his enduring value to Jurgen Klopp with two goals and Mo Salah eviscerated poor Rangers by arriving off the bench to grab a six-minute hat-trick, the Reds are almost certain of qualification for the knock-out stages.

Salah proved his class with a set of wonderful effortsCredit: Getty
Following an opening-night mauling by Napoli, that is a decent achievement from a side which has been stuttering badly in the Premier League.
A club who have reached ten European Cup finals, winning six of them, and which rightly regards itself as royalty in this competition, will always believe that lifting Old Big Ears is a realistic proposition.
Klopp told his team’s supporters to book their hotels for this season’s final in Istanbul as soon as they had lost to Real Madrid in Paris in May, on a night marred by chaotic policing.
And they are on call after prevailing in this Battle of Britain, in which one side employed heavy artillery and the other lot came armed with pop guns.
    READ MORE ON LIVERPOOL
Remarkably when you consider the final scoreline, Rangers led through their former Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield and were highly competitive for 45 minutes.
But the second half was an embarrassment for the Scottish club and an absolute breeze for Klopp’s men.
The fact they have won just twice in eight Premier League games yet netted six unanswered goals in the second period shows the vast gap between the leagues north and south of the border.
But without Firmino it might have been a less comfortable night for Klopp.
    Most read in Football
Most assumed that the 31-year-old Brazilian would be off this summer after the arrival of a more authentic centre-forward in Darwin Nunez.
But Firmino has scored eight goals in 12 matches so far – easily his best scoring rate of any season in his Anfield career – and after bagging the first two last night, he teed up Nunez for the third.
Then Salah, who had been rested until 20 minutes from time, scored a classy hat-trick and teenager Harvey Elliott netted the seventh as a once-raucous Ibrox quickly emptied.
For all Liverpool’s early-season struggles, their first encounter with Rangers at Anfield last week was far more comfortable than the 2-0 scoreline suggested – only Allan McGregor’s masterclass preventing a rout.
Perhaps that was why Klopp felt able to leave out Salah, ahead of Manchester City’s visit on Sunday.
But the German’s decision to substitute his Footballer of the Year and Golden Boot winner in Sunday’s defeat at Arsenal was an odd one.
HOW TO GET FREE BETS ON FOOTBALL
Since then, Klopp has been irritated by former Liverpool Champions League winner Didi Hamann questioning his future – the German is not used to any sort of dissent on Merseyside
The fear in resting a couple of senior players, on the back of three injuries suffered at Arsenal, was that the bearpit atmosphere at Ibrox might prove a leveller.
Even after three successive humpings in this group, Rangers showed far more purpose and conviction than they had done on Merseyside.
The home support assaulted the eardrums and Giovani van Bronckhorst’s players delivered on their pre-match promise of cramping Liverpool’s style and getting into their famous faces.
And, as is now usual, Klopp’s team went 1-0 down.
Former Red Ryan Kent had already bent a shot wide of the far post with Liverpool’s defence standoffish.
Then after Fabio Carvalho was robbed by Fashion Sakala, Ryan Jack slipped in a pass for Arfield to nip between Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to rifle past Alisson into the bottom corner.
With this stately old stadium rocking, Gomez almost gifted a quick-fire second with a stray back-pass.

But Rangers’ lead would last for only seven minutes and it was a seriously soft one to concede.
Kostas Tsimikas delivered an inswinging corner from the right and Firmino rose virtually unchallenged to head home at the near post, embarrassing McGregor and his defence.
It felt as if that moment might change the momentum of the night but Liverpool were unable to seize on their gift.
Klopp’s men look rattled when Rangers pressed them high and were unable to exert any real control in midfield.
Late in the first half, Arfield was only denied a second goal by a sharp diving block from Ibrahima Konate after Sakala had tormented Tsimikas.
Rangers centre-half Connor Goldson limped off just before half-time but after Klopp had charged down the tunnel at half-time, there was a far greater hunger about Liverpool in the second half.
And ten minutes into it, they were in front, Gomez galloping down the right and raking a low cross to Firmino, who timed his run with accuracy and nutmegged McGregor with his first-time finish.
That really was the moment when the ambition and belief of the home side dissolved and soon it was three.

Fabinho won possession in midfield, Carvalho sent a cute angled pass forward and Firmino’s subtle touch allowed Nunez to finish coolly inside the far post – it was comfortably Liverpool’s best move of the night.
Then Salah added three classy finishes in a Champions League-record six minutes and 12 seconds, the second particularly gorgeous, and Elliott – with the aid of VAR – bagged one which would have meant a lot to the kid, but little to the overall storyline.

Fans are all saying the same thing as Eric Dier gives away goal in nightmare start to Tottenham vs Eintracht Frankfurt

FOOTBALL fans were left unimpressed after Eric Dier’s calamitous start to Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt. The Spurs centre-back, 28, has enjoyed a return to form this season and was recalled to the England squad as a result.

But he was anything but competent for the first quarter of an hour in North London.
And his sluggish opening to the game culminated in a costly error in the 14th minute.
A dreadful touch saw Frankfurt steal possession away from Dier in his own penalty area.
And when the ball eventually found its way across to Daichi Kamada, he had the simple task of tapping home to give the visitors the lead.

The blunder led football supporters to slam Dier as Spurs fell behind in dreadful circumstances.

A Kane penalty then put Spurs in front, before Son volleyed in a stunning third nine minutes before half-time. More

    Man of the match.
It seems like there can only be one man who takes the SunSport man of the match award tonight, and that man is Heung Min Son.
Two goals, and impossible for the Frankfurt defence to deal with, we think he is well deserving of the award.
    Would you agree?

    What a strike!
Heung Min Son was having one of those games tonight.
The Korean winger has long been one of the most magnificent players to watch in the Premier League, and tonight proved why he is so globally adored.
His first goal was a brilliant right footed finish into the bottom corner, after a good through pass from Harry Kane, but really, it was all about his second.
Hojbjerg got down the right hand side, and delivered a perfect cross into Son, who absolutely rifled a volley past Kevin Trapp in net.
The prodigal Son returned once more tonight.
    Polar opposites.
Before the game tonight, the two team were only separated on goal difference.
Now, Frankfurt are bottom of the group, and Spurs are at the top.
This is how the group looks after matchday four…
Group D after matchday four, with Spurs at the top.
    Spurs see it out… Just…
Well, they never make it easy, do Tottenham Hotspur.
They went 1-0 down early on, due to an Eric Dier mistake, that allowed Daichi Kamada to roll the ball past Hugo Lloris.
With credit to them, they were then 3-1 up at home within the first half, after a brilliant Son brace, and a Harry Kane penalty.
However, 3-1 up against 10-man Frankfurt and seemingly cruising to victory in the 86th minute, they somehow almost found the score level at full-time.
On the 87th minute, Alidou headed in from a corner for the visitors, and all of a sudden you had a feeling the game could turn.
Spurs looked to have it sealed when Bryan Gil won a penalty in the 90th minute, only for Harry Kane to shoot over the target from the spot, getting those out of the way before the World Cup.
Frankfurt then had one last chance in the 95th minute, but they were denied an equaliser by Hugo Lloris in between the sticks.

    FT. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
A last gasp chance for Frankfurt is saved by Lloris!
But the referee calls the game to a close.
    90+2. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
We are into five minutes of added time…
    90. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
Kane puts it over the bar!
That is a horrendous shot from the England captain, who fires it over the bar.
    90. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
    Penalty for Spurs!
An awful backfeel sets Gil on his way who moves like Messi into the box, a foot is left out by Smolcic, and it is a pen for Spurs.
    Kane to take…
    89. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
Huge credit to the Eintracht Frankfurt fans, who are absolutely bouncing, and trying to get their team a point here.
    87. Spurs 3-2 Frankfurt.
Goal for Frankfurt from the corner! Alidou heads in!
    86. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Borre has a go from distance against Lloris, and wins a corner for his efforts.
    86. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
There is a double change for Spurs too.
Lucas Moura and Bryan Gil are on for Heung Min Son and Richarlison.
    85. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Sessegnon picks up a yellow card for a late challenge.
Davinson Sanchez gives away a free kick just in front of the halfway line.
    83. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Spurs are just seeing this one out now it seems.
Frankfurt do seem to spring into life every now and again, but they can’t make it happen up front.
    80. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Sow has a go from distance for Frankfurt, which goes just wide of the left post.
    Lloris had it covered regardless.
    77. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Davinson Sanchez replaces Eric Dier for Spurs.
It wasn’t the Englishman’s finest night, but he was good besides his shaky start.
    75. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Great save from Lloris as Frankfurk have a rare venture forward with Lindstrom.
His shot is fired towards the top corner, but matched by the French stopper.
    73. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Spurs look to be happy with their 3-1 lead, that has taken them to the top of the group, unless there is a remarkable comeback in this game or the Sporting game.
    70. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
    Triple change for Frankfurt.
Hasebe is off for Dina Ebimbe.
    Rode is replaced by Smolcic.
    Alidou is on for Lenz.
    68. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Frankfurt could be in more trouble here.
Hasebe brings down Son again, when he has already been booked, but appears to be injured in the process.
It doesn’t look like he is going to get a second booking.
Oliver Skipp is on for Richarlison, and Yves Bissouma is on for Rodrigo Bentancur.
    64. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
In the other game in this group it has gone from bad to worse for Sporting, who are now playing with just NINE men on the pitch.
That is three red cards in two games against Marseille.
    Fiesty.
    62. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Son fires the shot with power from distance, but it is watched all the way by Kevin Trapp.
    60. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Frankfurt cannot deal with Heung Min Son, and they are down to 10 men.
Tuta is sent of for a second yellow card in four minutes for another foul on Son.
This time he grab the Korean round the waist to attempt to bring him down and he still keeps the ball.
Hasebe also gets booked for the visitors.
    58. Spurs 3-1 Frankfurt.
Son fires the free kick goal wards, but it is punched away well by Kevin Trapp.

    What does this mean?
Barcelona’s 3-3 draw with Inter Milan has practically ended their hopes of making it through to the Champions League Last 16.
Barca are set to face high-flying Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp whereas Inter take on Viktoria Plzen, who are pointless, at the San Siro on October 26.
If the Nerazurri beat Plzen, and logic suggests they will, then they are officially through to the knockouts.
The same goes if the Blaugrana lose to Bayern in Catalonia, which will see Xavi’s men crashing out of Europe’s premiere competition for the second year in a row and dropping to the Europa League
