Who can Man Utd face in the Champions League Last 16, and when is the draw?

MANCHESTER UNITED are looking ahead to the Last 16 of the Champions League.Ralf Rangnick’s side are already through as group winners, meaning that they will crucially be going into the draw SEEDED.
Lionel Messi’s PSG could be up next for Man Utd
This also means they will avoid the other group winners – such as German giants Bayern Munich.
United will instead face a team who has finished second in their group, though this could still be a big gun such as Lionel Messi’s PSG.
And remember, teams from the same country cannot meet in the next stage, so defending champions Chelsea will NOT be able to face United.
Who can Manchester United face in the Last 16?
    Paris Saint-Germain
    Atletico Madrid
    Sporting Lisbon
    Inter Milan
    Benfica
    RB Salzburg

There could well be some preamble and chats with former Champions League stars who tend to draw the balls out of the pot.
Antoine Greizmann and Atletico Madrid could be United’s next opponents
Is the Champions League last 16 draw on TV and can I live stream it?
The balls will be drawn live on BT Sport, who are the Champions League broadcasters in the UK.
Fans can also watch the draw on Uefa.com and YouTube for FREE.

Man Utd 1 Young Boys 1: Mason Greenwood nets brilliant goal as Ralf Rangnick’s fringe stars end group stage with draw

MASON GREENWOOD staked his claim for a starting spot in the Premier League this weekend with a spectacular goal at Old Trafford.Manager Ralf Rangnick said this game was a chance for everyone outside of last Sunday’s first team to show him what they can do.

His predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knew what Greenwood could do which is why he labelled him the best finisher in the club.
New boss Rangnick got a close up look too as the 20-year-old put Manchester United ahead in this Group F Champions League encounter.
Luke Shaw was the supplier having nipped the ball back from the byline but there was still much to do.
The thing with Greenwood is he makes everything look so simple no matter what the problem.
So with the ball flying behind him rather than rolling to his feet he just made a quick adjustment and executed a scissor kick volley.
He could not have met the ball with his left foot better despite the angle his body was at.

Goalkeeper Guillaume Faivre had no chance. When things like this happen the 20-year-old is the least surprised of everyone about the end result.
Left foot, right foot, close in, edge of area, he is a danger all round the box and scores all kinds of goals.
It was his fifth of the season in his first start since the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester city on November 6.
Greenwood is devoting himself to firmly establishing himself in the first team again, at the expense of his international aspirations.

He has told Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate he does not want to be considered for now.
But this player will be a star for club AND country going forward.
In Rangnick’s 4-2-2-2 formation he could play in one of the two number ten roles as well as up front, such is his ability to run from deep, pull this way and that, cut in, the lot.
Donny van de Beek was another hoping to catch Rangnick’s eye.

It was thought that if anyone was going to benefit from Solskjaer’s departure it was him.
Idolised by the fans, for what reason nobody seems to explain he is apparently the answer to United’s midfield creative problems.
Except he is not, in fact he is just not very good, as he proved again last night by assisting Young Boys in their 42nd minute equaliser.
Receiving a ball from Nemanja Matic at the back he tried a smarter pass than was needed to Aaron Wan Bissaka.

He wasn’t ready, the pass was reckless and Fabian Rieder was on to it, curling a shot into the far top corner from just outside the area.
Both Amad and Anthony Elanga had chances to add to United’s tally in either half.
The former getting caught between two stools and the latter denied by a fine save.
Both times they were set up by Jesse Lingard. He is most likely on his way to West Ham next month but what a player for Rangnick to have in his squad.
While Young Boys were still looking for a win to possibly claim third and a Europa League spot, this game did not mean anything to United having already topped Group F.

The whole team and bench was changed and even goalkeeper Tom Heaton got his first start for the club ten years after leaving.
Pundit Robbie Savage’s son Charlie, another academy graduate, got a late run out too.
Greenwood is a great example to all of those coming through as to what can be achieved. More

And Rangnick rang the changes for Wednesday’s Champions League group stage draw against the Swiss giants.
Having already booked their spot as group winners, Rangnick handed starts to numerous fringe players including Juan Mata, Amad Diallo and Jesse Lingard.
Greenwood was also given a rare chance as United’s central striker.
And he repaid Rangnick’s faith with just nine minutes on the clock.
A break from United down the left saw Luke Shaw receive the ball outside the Young Boys’ penalty area.
He swept a great ball across the box to find Greenwood unmarked in the centre.

Despite several opponents standing nearby, Greenwood turned side-on as he made contact with ball, resulting in a glorious acrobatic volley.
And it ended up being the perfect shot as it flew into the back of the net, giving United a deserved lead.
However, the likes of Donny van de Beek and Anthony Elanga struggled as Young Boys turned up the heat.
And the Swiss visitors managed to pull one back just before the break through Fabian Rieder.

However, as the minutes ran down, neither side was able to find an ultimate breakthrough.

And with the Red Devils already through to the knockout stage, the Old Trafford crowd were happy enough to play out the stalemate. More

Ralf Rangnick stays behind in Man Utd training to put academy kids through their paces ahead of Young Boys clash

RALF RANGNICK stayed behind after Manchester United training to put the club’s own Young Boys through their paces ahead of tonight’s game. And four of the academy’s rising stars could be handed first-team debuts this evening against the brilliantly-named Swiss side.

The Red Devils know the pressure is off at Old Trafford because they have already topped Group F with a game to spare in the Champions League.
That could see wholesale changes from Rangnick, especially with the hectic Christmas schedule around the corner.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Rangnick stayed on at Carrington while 13 first-team stars were taken to The Hyatt hotel this afternoon to make the final preparations for tonight’s game.
The German remained at the training ground working with the likes of Bjorn Hardley, Charlie Wellens, Charlie Savage, Sam Mather, Zidane Iqbal and Shola Shoretire, who were named in the squad list for the Young Boys clash.
Mather, 17, is not expected to be involved after being named in the starting XI for the Under-19s Youth League game.
However, the rest look on course to be in the matchday team – with four set for debuts.

Mjelde unlikely to feature in Chelsea clash with Juventus as Hayes eyes tactical duel with Montemurro

MAREN MJELDE looks set to miss Chelsea’s Champions League duel with Juventus this evening. And Emma Hayes revealed fans are unlikely to see the right-back in action before Christmas with the club wanting the player to boost her strength.
Emma Hayes says Maren Mjelde could return to play for Chelsea after Christmas
Mjelde, 32, made her long-awaited return in November in Chelsea’s 7-0 thumping of Servette after suffering a painful knee injury during their Conti Cup trophy win in March.
Blues chief Hayes, 44, whose side host Juve at home, said: “Maren has still got a little bit of work to do on developing her strength.
“We’re taking that time to do that so I don’t think Maren will play this side of Christmas.”
Hayes hinted fans may also have to wait until after Christmas to see Lauren James return to first-team action.
The England starlet, 20, made a cameo appearance in the 85th minute of Chelsea’s 1-0 home win against Servette coming close to nabbing a debut goal.
The Kingsmeadow boss added: “Lauren is building back progressively, and we saw with the minutes we gave her last time that she has good quality.”

Fikayo Tomori opened the scoring for the Serie A side, but the Merseyside outfit came back from behind to win thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.
The victory saw Liverpool pick up maximum points from their six group stage games, and fans were quick to praise Phillips, who partnered Ibrahima Konate in the heart of defence.
The ex-Stuttgart loanee dazzled supporters with an outrageous piece of skill inside his own box in the 69th minute.
Phillips reacted quickly after Konate intercepted a pass, before calmly performing a Cruyff turn which sent Ibrahimovic and Franck Kessie the wrong way.
Commenting on the incident, one user tweeted: “Just Nat Phillips sending Zlatan Ibrahimovic into the next dimension with a Cruyff turn.”
Another remarked: “Nat Phillips doing Cruyff turns in the San Siro is the content we are here for!”

    THAT’S ALL FROM MILAN
Liverpool defeated AC Milan 2-1 at the San Siro and became the first ever English team to win all of their six games in the Champions League group stage.
Milan were looking at qualification to the Last 16 on 29 minutes when Junior Messias delivered a corner kick from the right and Zlatan Ibrahimovic flicked it towards goal at the near post.
Takumi Minamino failed to block it and Alisson palmed the ball away after being caught by surprise.
Fikayo Tomori got the rebound and scored his first ever Champions League goal.
But Liverpool responded just seven minutes later when Mike Maignan failed to hold on to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot and Mohamed Salah scored his 20th goal across all competitions from close range.
The Reds completed their comeback after 55 minutes when Tomori gave the ball away and Sadio Mane picked up possession before delivering a shot that was blocked by Maignan.
But the danger wasn’t over yet as Divock Origi got the header and put the Merseysiders ahead.
With Atletico Madrid beating Porto 3-1 away, Liverpool are joined by the Spanish champions in the next round whereas the Portuguese giants move on to the Europa League and Milan are out altogether.

    TONALI REACTS
AC Milan ace Sandro Tonali insists this was a difficult game even though a number of key Liverpool players didn’t start.
Tonali told Sky Italia: “We knew it was a difficult game, as even without some of their first-choice players, Liverpool have so much strength in depth.
“We learned from the experience against these top teams and that is what we will take with us going forward.
“We could’ve done more, that is always true, but we didn’t hold back today and cannot turn back time.
“All we can do now is continue along our path and focus on the next objective”

Milan, on the other hand, are out of Europe altogether.
    More below:

    STATS
Liverpool dominated 51.4 per cent of possession despite playing with a highly rotated squad.
The Reds registered a total of 22 shots, seven of which were on target at the San Siro.
AC Milan, on the other hand, produced eight shots but only three of them were on target.
This was a crucial match for Milan and we expected some tension but weirdly enough there wasn’t a single booking throughout the entire match
    FT: AC MILAN 1-2 LIVERPOOL
With Atletico Madrid beating Porto 3-1 away, Liverpool are joined by the Spanish champions in the next round whereas the Portuguese giants move on to the Europa League and Milan are out altogether

Atletico took the lead in the 56th minute through Antoine Griezmann.
But it was another ten minutes before the match really came to life.
The first flashpoint came when Yannick Carrasco refused Porto the opportunity to take a free-kick quickly.
He picked up the ball, only to be chased by fuming Porto star Otavio.
The attacking midfielder made a grab for the ball, before Carrasco took a swipe – knocking him to the ground.
Carrasco was then sent to the floor himself, as pushing and shoving ensued.

The Belgian was red carded – while Otavio and Angel Correa were also booked in the melee.
Pepe was subsequently booked for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’, before Wendell became the latest man to be sent off.
The full-back grabbed the ball after it went out for a throw in, as Mathias Cunha raced in to take it from him.
Wendell stood his ground, with Cunha running into his elbow before flopping to the floor.
The referee bought the theatrics and Wendell was given his marching orders.
Agustin Marchesin was then sent off despite being on the bench.
Incredibly, the back-up keeper has now received more red cards than minutes played in the Champions League this season.
Correa went on to double Atletico’s lead in the 90th minute, before Rodrigo De Paul added gloss in stoppage time.
Sergio Oliveira bagged a 96th minute penalty for Porto, but it wasn’t enough to prevent his nine-man side from dropping into the Europa League – while Atletico qualified for the Champions League knockouts.
