Arsenal and Man Utd’s seasons have been thrilling tales of the unexpected thanks to Liverpool collapse and Man City slip

IT’S the end of the world as we know it — and it’s extraordinarily good fun.At the halfway stage of the Premier League season, the state of the nation is a state of unprecedented flux.

Three of England’s four Champions League places look very likely to change hands.
Three fully-established top-flight clubs occupy the relegation places — West Ham, Southampton and Everton, an ever-present since 1954.
Fulham, Brighton and Brentford all sit proudly in the top eight, above Liverpool and Chelsea.
Arsenal and Manchester United could face off on Sunday as the top two in the league, with Newcastle tucked in behind them as if it’s 1997 all over again.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
This wasn’t supposed to happen. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were meant to be continuing their duopoly — two truly great teams dominating the English game as they’d done for the previous five years.
And while the resurgence of Arsenal under Mikel Arteta and United under Erik ten Hag have been thrilling tales of the unexpected, neither would be sitting so loftily without the collapse of one empire and the alarming cracks beginning to show in another.
Suddenly, both Liverpool and City have lost a lot of what made them so great.
Liverpool are no longer dynamic, manic pressing, never-knowingly-beaten “mentality monsters”.

And City aren’t quite the pass-you-to-death, liquid-football, Barcelona-built model we are used to.
For Klopp, it feels terminal. For Guardiola, it is too early to say.
But both managers have lost their sense of permanence, both teams their aura of near-invincibility.
Liverpool have clocked up 92 points or more in three of the past four seasons — the only exception being the freakish behind-closed doors 2020-21 campaign when all of their senior central defenders suffered long-term injuries. This season they are on target for less than 60.
Klopp’s side have been humped at Brentford and Brighton in their last two league games, with the German finally running out of daft excuses and admitting Saturday’s visit to the Amex was the worst performance he had ever presided over.
Before the World Cup, Klopp spoke reasonably — but tellingly — about the impossibility of competing financially with clubs funded by nation states, City and Newcastle.
It sounded like the time when Bayern Munich nabbed one too many of his Borussia Dortmund players and he finally realised that, after two Bundesliga titles, he was fighting a losing battle in German football and quit his former club.
Cracks are starting to appear for Pep Guardiola at Manchester CityCredit: Getty
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have collapsed this season, most recently at BrightonCredit: AP
Yet it is not just City and Newcastle that Klopp’s men are failing to compete with — the Reds are 19 points adrift of an Arsenal side with a significantly lower wage bill.
Liverpool, built on athleticism, stamina and mental fortitude, have suddenly grown old and tired, as has Klopp himself.
And now you genuinely would not be surprised if he left Anfield this summer, an eventuality which seemed unthinkable when his side came close to completing the Quadruple eight months ago.
City, second in the table and the highest scorers in the top flight, are in nowhere near as bad a state — but the signing of Erling Haaland has weirdly destabilised them.
On the surface it seems ludicrous that a team which won back-to-back titles without a regular, authentic centre-forward should decline after signing the most prolific striker of the Premier League era.
But City’s best recent performance, and certainly their most typically Pep-ish display, was the 4-0 FA Cup hammering of Chelsea, which Haaland sat out.
Guardiola may have been sulky and sarcastic in the wake of Saturday’s Manchester derby defeat at Old Trafford when he claimed “I don’t care” whether City win the title because they had “won it a lot”.
When the mighty fall, as Liverpool and City have done, the chaos can be glorious.Dave Kidd
City’s focus, even more so than usual, is on winning the Champions League —  especially with England’s other three representatives, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham, all in disarray.
But Guardiola’s team are often struggling to play to Haaland’s strengths and, after last week’s deserved League Cup defeat at rock-bottom Southampton, Ilkay Gundogan made the stark admission that City’s players were lacking “hunger and desire”.
All in all, the problems of City and Liverpool add to the gaiety of the nation.
For too long, the Premier League — while offering thrilling one-off matches — had too predictable a table.
Now, with English football’s financial might allowing smaller Premier League clubs to compete financially with major European powers in the transfer market, there is far greater potential for unpredictability.
No fixture can be taken for granted. Brentford have beaten both Manchester clubs and Liverpool, while Brighton have defeated United, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Run your club as well as the Bees or the Seagulls, and you can thrive.
Spend your riches badly, like Everton or Chelsea, and you will struggle.
When Leicester won the title in 2016, it may have been the unlikeliest story in football history but it was only possible because most of the Big Six were in transition or turmoil.
For when the mighty fall, as Liverpool and City have done, the chaos can be glorious.
This is a season to cherish because we haven’t got the slightest clue what will happen next.
Everton fans’ banners weren’t going to trouble the Poet LaureateCredit: PA
    C-RHYME WATCH
THE violent intimidation tactics of Everton supporters forced board members to stay away from Saturday’s loss to Southampton.
But even worse were the appalling nursery-level rhymes on the protestors’ banners at Goodison Park.
As Rik Mayall’s Lord Flashheart, surely a closet Evertonian, said in Blackadder Goes Forth: “I’m sick of this damned war — the mud, the noise, the endless poetry…”
    BIG GUNNS AGAIN
THERE’S fury among Arsenal fans after their side was charged with “failing to control players” twice in the space of a week — after confronting referees mob-handed in matches against Newcastle and Oxford.
But we know they love it really — because you can only hold a proper persecution complex if you know you’re big enough and relevant enough to be persecuted.
And Arsenal are big and relevant again.

    LUKE AND LEARN
EARLIER in the season, we all speculated on whether a centre-half in the entire Premier League could keep Erling Haaland quiet.
Erik ten Hag decided the answer was to play Luke Shaw in central defence, in front of three experienced international specialists in that position.
Unlike the other bald bloke in a roll-neck sweater managing in Manchester, when Ten Hag “over-thinks” things, it actually seems to work.
    CAR-TOON VILLAINS
THERE was some surprise Eddie Howe selected Joelinton to play for Newcastle against Fulham days after being arrested and charged with drink-driving.
As if a manager happy to take Saudi blood money could worry too much over morality.
A huge banner of Howe unfurled at St James’ Park on Sunday read, “We’re not here to be popular, we’re here to compete”.
After years as a comedy club, the Geordies are fully embracing villainy.
    BLUE MURDER
WE are fast approaching the moment when the average length of a contract handed to a new Chelsea signing will overtake the average amount of time served in prison for committing murder.

TODD BOEHLY was called “the funniest owner in Premier League history” after he listened in to a Chelsea fans’ Twitter space chat. The American billionaire – who took over from Roman Abramovich in May – was all ears after the Blues 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Chelsea fans discussed the performance and players they would like to see join and leave the club.
The discussion continued while Boehly was listed as a “listener” which left fans online stunned.
One said: “Todd Boehly listening to a Chelsea twitter space!! We have the best owner in the world!”
Another said: “Can’t believe Todd Boehly was in a twitter space and our fanbase just start listing off the players they want over the next two transfer windows.

Boehly made the unpopular decision in September to sack Thomas Tuchel, a Champions League winner at Chelsea, to hire Graham Potter.
And Potter has so far struggled at Stamford Bridge, despite victory over Palace, with still leaves the Blues tenth.
But Boehly is ready to back Potter’s project and has put his money where his mouth is to prove it.

Fulham flop and ex-Champions League star Konstantinos Mitroglou now playing in non-league of German football

FULHAM flop Konstantinos Mitroglou is now playing in non-league German football. The striker, who scored a hat-trick in the Champions League less than 10 years ago, has now settled down at amateur club Rheurdt-Schaephuysen.
Mitroglou will face a whole new challenge after the forward dipped down into the amateur divisions of German footballCredit: Getty
The 34-year-old will now be competing at the German grassroots club, who are several promotions away from competing with the likes of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Bild report that Mitroglou lives locally and is friends with the coach, Robert Kruppa.
Rheurdt sit bottom of their division ahead of the league’s return and Kruppa will be hoping Mitroglou can fire his side to some much-needed goals.
It’s quite the career move for the forward, who has won several trophies during his career and picked up 65 international caps for Greece.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
In January 2014 Mitroglou became Fulham’s record signing for £12.4m as the club desperately looked for mid-season reinforcements during their relegation battle.
But the London side would finish 19th and the Greek attacker would only play three times for the club due to injury and fitness issues.
It was a disastrous season for Fulham fans who saw their 13-year stay in the top-flight ended and three managers – Martin Jol, Rene Meulensteen and Felix Magath – all occupy the dugout.
Mitroglou enjoyed a far better time of it before his move to west London playing for Olympiacos.

He became the first Greek player and only the second Olympiacos player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League during a 3-0 win over Anderlecht in 2013.
The season before Mitroglou would also score past Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal in the the same competition before eventually losing 3-1 at the Emirates.
Since leaving Fulham, the Greek international enjoyed a solid stint at Benfica before a four-year stay in France with Marseille.
His last season of competitive action was with Greek club Aris between 2021 and 2022. More

Where Tottenham’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ are who were signed with Gareth Bale money in 2013, from Soldado to Paulinho?

IN 2013, Spurs were forced to blow up their squad following the world-record sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. The Welshman had scored 26 goals in the previous campaign, sweeping the Premier League’s various individual awards ahead of the likes of Luis Suarez and Eden Hazard.

But there was a problem – Tottenham missed out on Champions League qualification by a point.
Daniel Levy was bullish that he could keep his star asset, but Real Madrid turned on their charm offensive and it soon became just a matter of when, not if.
So Spurs got busy, signing seven new players for more than £100million – as the line went, they’d ‘sold Elvis, and signed The Beatles’.
But while Bale was off winning Champions League titles with Madrid, Spurs’ new signings were producing contrasting performances.

So let’s take a look at what became of the ‘Magnificent Seven’.
    ROBERTO SOLDADO – £26m

Soldado, 37, joined Levante from LaLiga rivals GranadaCredit: AFP OR LICENSORS
Spaniard Soldado was probably the most exciting of the acquisitions, when he arrived from Valencia for £26m, fresh from wowing at the Confederations Cup and banging in 24 goals in LaLiga.
Despite no lack of trying, his time at White Hart Lane was a disaster, however, as he only managed seven goals in 52 Premier League appearances – with five of them coming from the penalty spot.
Levy did manage to squeeze £10m out of Villarreal for his services in 2015, and he has since played for Fenerbahce and Granada.

    PAULINHO – £17m

Another that arrived off the back of a stellar Confederations Cup, Spurs fans thought they were getting ‘the Brazilian Frank Lampard’ when Paulinho arrived in N17.
Initial performances were steady, with a late back-heeled winner at Cardiff prompting pandemonium among the travelling supporters.
Things went downhill very quickly, however, with Paulinho being red carded in Andre Villas-Boas’ final game in charge, before becoming a nervous wreck barely capable of completing a five-yard pass by the end.
He was offered a career lifeline by Chinese Super League giants Guangzhou Evergrande, where he became a big star – via a very strange, if not totally unsuccessful year at Barcelona.
Paulinho, 34, linked up with Saudi side Al-Ahli but signed a deal with Corinthians in 2022.

Fans were excited at Chiriches’ arrival, as they thought they’d unearthed a hidden gem from Steaua Bucharest, with a penchant for playing the ball out from the back.
And while he was very laid back, it often proved to be to the team’s detriment, as his casual style tended to gift opponents easy goals, while leaving fans’ hearts in their mouths.
Like Soldado and Paulinho, Chiriches lasted two seasons at the Lane, before being shipped off to Napoli.
The Romanian managed just 48 appearances across four seasons at San Paulo, before joining Sassuolo on loan two years ago – before making it permanent for just shy of £10m.
Last summer, he was snapped up by Cremonese – and at 33 still plays in Serie A.
    NACER CHADLI – £7m
Chadli became a useful player in his three years at SpursCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
One of the more successful acquisitions of that summer, Chadli became a popular figure at Spurs despite an underwhelming start.
The Belgian joined from FC Twente, having scored against Tottenham home and away in the 2010-11 Champions League campaign.
But it was not until his second season that he really began to shine, scoring 13 goals as Mauricio Pochettino began to transform the club’s fortunes.
He left for West Brom in 2017, eventually joining Istanbul Basaksehir in 2020, via stints at Monaco and Anderlecht.
This season, the Turkish team have loaned the now 33-year-old to Belgium side KVC Westerlo.
    ETIENNE CAPOUE – £9m

Capoue helped Villarreal beat Manchester United in the Europa League finalCredit: Getty – Pool
Neither wildly awful nor outstandingly memorable, Capoue is possibly the most forgettable player of the seven.
With Sandro having regressed due to knee injuries, Capoue initially seemed to be the perfect foil for Mousa Dembele in his place.
But the Frenchman fell out of favour despite steady performances, although was hung out to dry following a few awful displays as a makeshift centre-back.
He lasted one season beyond Pochettino’s arrival in 2014, before joining Watford.
Capoue made 11 outings in the Championship in the first half of the 2020-21 season, before signing for Villarreal in the January transfer window.
And his impact was immediate as he helped the Spanish side beat Manchester United in the Europa League final – the club’s first major trophy in their history.
While he was also crucial in their Champions League run last season to the semi-final.
    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – £11m

Eriksen is now starring for Man UtdCredit: Getty
Without doubt the most successful acquisition of that summer, Christian Eriksen was an outstanding, indispensable member of the squad for six years, before eventually departing for Inter Milan in January 2020.
A bargain at £11m, the Dane papered over cracks during Tim Sherwood’s tenure, pulling out a brilliant goal or moment of genius time and time again to dig the team out of trouble.
He then became vital to Pochettino’s side, so much so that they struggled to adapt whenever he was absent.
Eriksen admitted his desire to ‘try something new’ after losing the 2019 Champions League final and joined Inter six months later.
The playmaker helped Inter win the Serie A title last season, but his playing career hung in the balance after he suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.
However, he returned to the Premier League last season on a short term deal with Brentford.
His excellent performances earned Eriksen a move to Man Utd, where he has enjoyed a stellar season.
    ERIK LAMELA – £30m
Lamela joined Spurs just two days before Bale’s move to Madrid was confirmedCredit: Action Images – Reuters
Erik Lamela became the last of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ to depart North London for Spain.
Argentine Lamela, 30, actually had a bizarre start at Spurs, starting just three league matches in his first season before disappearing back to his homeland following a back injury early on in Tim Sherwood’s tenure.
He returned following his compatriot Pochettino’s arrival, wrestling for a starting berth before sustaining a troublesome hip injury in October 2016 that would keep him out for 13 months.

Lamela again recovered and returned to action – chipping in with 255 appearances before joining Sevilla in a swap deal with Bryan Gil heading in the opposite direction.
His most memorable moment will be his ‘rabona’ strike in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, with his strike winning the Premier League Goal of the Season award. More

The 37-year-old veteran has been replaced with younger stars as Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez is surprisingly nominated for the first time.
