Lionel Messi could MISS PSG’s huge Champions League clash with Bayern Munich with hamstring injury

LIONEL MESSI could miss PSG’s huge Champions League tie with Bayern Munich due to a hamstring injury, according to reports in France. Messi went off injured as PSG lost 2-1 to Marseille at the Stade Velodrome in the Coupe de France on Wednesday night.

French outlet L’Equipe have reported that the seven time Ballon d’Or winner will miss Saturday’s trip to Monaco in Ligue 1.
The report goes on to say that the hamstring injury could even rule him out of the blockbuster Champions League tie with Bayern.
The Parisian’s remain confident that Messi will be fit for the first leg at the Parc de Princes on Tuesday night.
The French giants will be desperate for Messi to feature as they are already without Kylian Mbappe for the first leg.
To potentially be without their two star strikers would make life very difficult for Christophe Galtier’s men against the Bundesliga leaders.
The Argentine has been in great form for PSG this season registering 10 goals and 10 assists in Ligue 1.
In the Champions League he has four goals in five matches.
PSG face Monaco in Ligue 1 this weekend whilst Bayern take on VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga.

Hated European Super League is BACK as it sets out new plans to replace Champions League with 80-team format

THE European Super League has set out new plans to replace the Champions League with a 60 to 80-team competition. The latest idea would see each club involved play a minimum of 14 games per season, with no permanent members.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been one of the leading voices behind the idea for a European Super LeagueCredit: EPA
The announcement was made by European sports development company A22 – a Madrid-based sister company of the European Super League.
It comes amid an ongoing legal dispute between Uefa and the three remaining teams in the ESL – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – an idea which was quashed within three days by fan protests in April 2021.
A22 claim the idea for the formation of the new competition comes after discussions with clubs around Europe about their economic difficulties.
However, it is not yet known how Real, Barca or Juventus would make way for new teams within the structure, or even who would run the league.

A22 have slammed Uefa and outlined the basis for their “10 principles for a European football league”.
They said: “A European football league should be an open, multi-divisional competition with 60 to 80 teams, allowing for sustainable distribution of revenues across the pyramid.
“Participation should be based on annual sporting merit and there should be no permanent members.
“Open qualification based on domestic performance would grant rising clubs access to the competition while maintaining competitive dynamics at domestic level.”

It is a huge U-turn from the original principles which would have seen the “Founding Partners” sharing a £3bn windfall for being in at the start of the breakaway and guaranteed £130m minimum each season.
The original Super League members were Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.

A22 went on to add: “Clubs also need greater stability and predictability in annual revenues so they can make sensible, long-term commitments to player and infrastructure expenditures.
“Substantial improvements in the format and attractiveness of the current European competitions would generate additional resources.
“Stability and predictability in revenues would be dramatically improved by offering clubs a minimum of 14 guaranteed European matches each season.”
Reichart went on to claim a new format would also support domestic leagues, women’s football, the fans, financial sustainability, and the health of the players.
And Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed previously that there would be greater solidarity payments for clubs not competing in Europe.
The publication of the “principles” brought scoffing and dismissal from Spain’s La Liga.
La Liga chief executive Javier Tebas published a cartoon picturing Super League as the Big Bad Wolf and European football as Little Red Riding Hood.
Tebas said: “Super League is the wolf, who disguises himself as a granny to try to fool European football.
“But his nose and his teeth are very big.
“Four divisions in Europe? Of course the first is just for them, as in the 2019 plan.
“Government by the clubs? Yes, of course – but only by the big ones.”
It is understood the ESL is keen to address the dominance of the Premier League given its power when it comes to television rights and activity in the transfer market.
Last year, Uefa revealed plans for a new Champions League structure which will consist of 36 teams in a single division playing ten group-stage matches – a format that will come into force at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
But the European organisation’s dispute with the Super League is continuing to rumble on.
In December, Uefa were handed a boost by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg when advocate-general Athanasios Rantos’ advice sided with the European body.
Rantos found that EU competition law was in line with the restrictions Uefa and Fifa possess over football.
    Read More on The Sun
He went on to state the governing body’s power was “proportionate” for achieving Uefa’s “legitimate objectives” in accordance with EU policy.
Rantos’ advice is not binding to ECJ judges but is often followed. More

Qatar group confident Man Utd WILL be able to play in Champions League with takeover bid separate from PSG owners QSI

And an important difference is that the huge injection of money into United would come from an individual fund – not from a sovereign wealth.
The Red Devils’ would-be buyers plan on giving manager Erik ten Hag the resources to quickly return to the world elite.
A bid could be made in the next week, with United valued at £6billion-plus by current owners the Glazers.
Offers are tipped to come from the Far East, Middle East and the USA.

What happens if Qatar group own Man Utd and PSG at the same time and can both play in Champions League?

MANCHESTER UNITED could be joining Paris Saint-Germain under the umbrella of a Qatari investment group – but that could result in some unintended consequences. The Glazers announced in November that they are willing to listen to suitable offers for a stake in the Premier League giants.
Qatar, ruled by Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani (above), has owned PSG since 2011Credit: AP
But since then, reports suggest that the United owners are now more interested in a FULL takeover bid.
And it seems as if the most recent interest is coming from a Qatari group who could lodge a tantalising offer within the next few days.
However, the same group owning two clubs in European competition may cause a slight problem.
What happens if Qatar own Man Utd and PSG at the same time?
There are no restrictions on an owner acquiring multiple clubs at the same time in different countries.
    Read more on Man Utd
That means the reported Qatari group who are readying a bid for Manchester United, would have no problems doing so even if they are indistinguishable from the one in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.
However, other rules apply to certain leagues where potential buyers of clubs do have restrictions.
An example of this is the Premier Leaguem, which has restricted shareholding in a second club in the division to 10%.

Can both teams play in Champions League?
UEFA implemented a ‘Integrity of the UEFA Club competitions: Independence of clubs’ rule in 1998 which states that no two clubs participating in a UEFA competition may be directly or indirectly controlled by the same ownership group.
    This is defined by:

    The majority of the shareholders’ voting rights in another club in the same UEFA club competition;
    Or, another right to appoint or remove a majority of the directors in another club in the same UEFA club competition;
As well as, majority of the shareholders’ voting rights (through a shareholders’ agreement) in another club in the same UEFA club competition.

Therefore, if a Qatari group owned United while they and PSG qualify for the Champions League, the ownership group would more than likely have to choose who plays in it.
These rules have been put in to place to protect the integrity of the competition. More

Inside Man City’s panicky week after alleged financial rule breaches with top lawyer hired and stars fearing for futures

PANIC is the word that best sums up Manchester City’s week so far. While City have turned to Lord Pannick KC to get them off the hook from the Premier League charges, many of their star players are in a flap about their futures.

Certainly, there was much to ponder as most of the squad enjoyed a day off yesterday — with their club’s whole future up in the air all of a sudden.
Boss Pep Guardiola faces a tough task to get their minds back on a huge few weeks in their season when they reassemble later this week.
On Monday, they heard the news from the Premier League as they prepared to head to the Etihad Campus.
There had been no mention of it when chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and other execs visited the away dressing room at Tottenham some 15 hours earlier.

Yet club sources insist they had been given no heads-up about what was coming down the line.
So the squad turned up for a warm-down session in the afternoon to recover from the disappointing 1-0 defeat to Spurs.
But before they hit the training pitches, chief executive Ferran Soriano addressed the squad in the first-team building at the City Football Academy.
Just as he did when Uefa banned the club from the Champions League almost three years ago, he insisted they have done nothing wrong — and will clear their name.

The former Barcelona executive was right that time — the punishment was lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport five months later.
City players, staff and fans around the world will be keeping everything crossed for a similar outcome this time.
Yet after training — when the players headed for home — the enormity of the situation started to hit them and it is going to feel uneasy for some time.
For the next few months at least, and possibly longer, there will be a huge cloud over the Etihad… and not just the traditional grey ones.
The prospect of the club being kicked out of the Premier League is real and the extraordinary ride City have been on over the last 15 years could be about to come to a crashing halt.
If they are found guilty and hit with the harshest sanction, where will that leave the first-team players?
City’s future is uncertain with the club facing over 100 charges
Most of them joined City for the chance to play in the Champions League — not the Championship.
Not many will have ‘relegation clauses’ in their contracts, as few agents would have deemed it to be necessary.
That hardly matters as without the TV riches, the club could not afford their wages and would need a firesale to balance the books.
Yet, somehow, they must put it all to the backs of their minds when returning to training.
As unlikely as it may be given their current form, they are still in the hunt for three trophies this season.
Nobody can be certain at this stage whether the response will be a girding of collective loins and an increased determination to make a point on the field.

Or, if the threat creates a sense of resignation and doom that means players will not run the extra yard that can make the difference.
So far, we have not heard from Guardiola or any of his players about the charges relating to 115 alleged breaches of Premier League rules over more than a decade.
Guardiola, as he was three years ago, will be the one whose head is first above the parapet when he holds his press conference on Friday.
But City fans will look back on the leadership and focus that the Spaniard demonstrated back in February 2020 — and hope they see a repeat now.
Back then, Guardiola deployed the sort of tactics of which Sir Alex Ferguson would have approved.
Fergie was the master of fostering a siege mentality, making any perceived slight against his club and players as a cause he expected the entire dressing room to buy into.
Dark clouds loom over the Etihad after this week’s developmentsCredit: Getty
That was very much the pose adopted by Guardiola — at least for the consumption of his squad and the wider City supporter base.
When he gathered his players together in the immediate aftermath of the ban being announced, Guardiola looked them in the eye and told them all: “Whatever league we’re in, I will still be here.
“Even if they put us in League Two, I will still be here. This is a time for sticking together.”
And a few days later, he told the world’s media: “I’m completely sure of the commitment of our players.
“It’s about what they’ve shown for many years. Nothing changes.
“At the end of the season, nobody knows what is going to happen. With calm, we’ll decide what we want.
“But for the next three months, the commitment will be incredible.”
It got the response he wanted. Nobody will forget their brilliant and thoroughly deserved 2-1 win in the Bernabeu against mighty Real Madrid less than two weeks later.

By a twist of fate, the last game City had played before the ban was announced was an unexpected Prem defeat at… Tottenham.
Three years later, it is history repeating. And it will be a similar response that Guardiola needs now. More

Why Aubameyang was not in Chelsea’s squad to face Fulham after devastating Champions League axe

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG is back at work with Chelsea amid rumours of a shock return to Barcelona this summer. The striker, 33, was dramatically axed from the club’s Champions League squad on Friday and wasn’t even on the bench for the 0-0 draw at home to Fulham that evening.

On the pitch, the former Arsenal captain has only three goals this season, while his last start was back on November 6.
The brutal chop last week only strengthened claims from Spain that Aubameyang could go back to the Nou Camp.
He is six months into a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the club holding the option of a third year.
The Gabon international, who had his contract terminated at the Gunners by mutual consent after a string of misdemeanours and poor time-keeping, was given a weekend off by Chelsea boss Graham Potter as consolation.

And Aubameyang promptly jetted out to Milan – just days after he was linked with a move to AC Milan.
The striker has also attracted interest from LAFC, with the MLS transfer window open until April 24.
Aubameyang was bang on time on Monday morning when the Blues squad resumed training ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime trip to West Ham.
He is in contention for a place in the squad but faces a gloomy long-term future in West London, even though the club are struggling up front.

Potter brought on rookie David Datro Fofana, 20, in Friday’s stalemate in a boost to his striking options.
That was despite the fact the little-known £10.5million Ivorian, only signed in January from Norwegians Molde, was set to go on loan at one point during last month’s transfer window.
Keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga praised the influence of new signings £107m British record buy Enzo Fernandez and £35m defender Benoit Badiashile against Fulham.
He said: “Everyone saw Enzo’s quality and how well he played.
“He is a big player for us and, hopefully, he can help us a lot.

“Benoit is a really good guy, very calm and has big quality with the ball.

The Real Madrid No1 underwent medical tests on Monday morning.
And, while Madrid were relieved to discover the Belgian’s injury is not serious, he remains a doubt for Los Blancos’ latest Champions League showdown with Liverpool.
Courtois, 30, will miss Madrid’s Club World Cup Campaign which gets underway on Wednesday against Egyptian side Al Ahly.
But he has 15 days to recover for the last-16 first-leg clash against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds at Anfield on February 21.
