Watch Neymar’s game-changing highlights from 20-minute Real Madrid cameo as PSG ace helps inspire crucial first-leg win

NEYMAR returned to the PSG squad on Tuesday to inspire victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.Whilst the 30-year-old was not on the pitch for long, he certainly impressed with his performance.

PSG were completely dominant throughout the game but did not seem to have the cutting edge to put away the chances that they were creating.
That was, until the 94th minute.
Neymar picked up the ball in the middle of the half before sending a back-heel to Kylian Mbappe on the left.
The Frenchman then drove into the box and skipped through Eder Militao and Lucaz Vazquez before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
The Parisians went on to win the game 1-0.
Mauricio Pochettino introduced Neymar in the 72nd minute as the replacement for Angel Di Maria and it was undoubtedly the best decision he could have made.

The Brazilian injected his team with a new level of intensity and added more pace to the game.
His style of play put Real Madrid on edge, which forced them to make some defensive errors.
Within one minute of coming off the bench he forced David Alaba to make a foul on the edge of the penalty area, winning a free-kick in the process.
It’s hard to believe that the Brazilian was just making his return after being sidelined with a ligament injury.
He looked like he was at his best and could prove to be a key asset going into the second leg of the fixture.
The second leg of the Champions League round-of-16 will take place on March 9.
Whilst PSG have a slim advantage, they will still have a tough task on their hands as they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid again. More

‘Close to perfection as it gets’ – Hargreaves hails Man City after thumping 5-0 Champions League win at Sporting Lisbon

OWEN HARGREAVES has heaped praise on Pep Guardiola and his team after they defeated Sporting Lisbon in an impressive 5-0 victory on Tuesday.Man City have all but guaranteed their place in the Champions League quarter finals after they thumped Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the round-of-16 clash.

Goals from Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling have put the Sky Blues in the driving seat for the second-leg, which takes place on March 9.
One person who was particularly impressed with the performance is former City midfielder Hargreaves.
When speaking on BT Sport after the game, he said: “There is no such thing as perfection, but they’re as close to a perfect team if there is one right now.
“When they’re that clinical and efficient as they were in the first half, I don’t think anyone can get near them.
“In the second half, if anything, they took their foot off the gas because they only had one shot on target.
“I don’t know how you beat them, I’ll be honest.

Rio Ferdinand also praised Guardiola for his management, saying: “He has set a standard at that club.

Watch Schmeichel send Carragher, Henry and Richards into hysterics with bold claim Man Utd can win Champions League

PETER SCHMEICHEL sent Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards into hysterics by boldly claiming Manchester United can win this season’s Champions League. The footballers-turned-pundits were all on duty for American network CBS Sports on Tuesday night as Europe’s elite competition returned to action.

The quartet were treated to a fine display of football from Manchester City, who thrashed Sporting Lisbon 5-0.
And they also witnessed two of this term’s favourites battle it out as Paris Saint-Germain secured a late win over Real Madrid.
However, talk quickly turned to United’s chances amid their dismal season under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
The German oversaw a fortunate 2-0 win against Brighton in the Premier League on Tuesday, ending a run of three games without victory.
And ex-Red Devil Schmeichel was soon put on the spot by his co-stars over whether Rangnick could emulate Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel by leading his underperforming side to the continent’s greatest prize.
When asked by Richards to give an ‘honest’ answer over whether United can win the Champions League this season, Schmeichel cried: “Yes!

“Of course I do! What kind of question is that?!”
It prompted Carragher, Henry and Richards to break down in fits of laughter, with the trio unable to comprehend Schmeichel’s response.
Carragher then cheekily chimed in, with the Liverpool icon quipping: “What kind of answer is that?!”
Should United stand any chance of winning the Champions League for the first time since 2008, they will have to get past Atletico Madrid next week.
Diego Simeone’s no-nonsense Spaniards are sure to prove stern opposition in the last 16, first leg tie at the Wanda Metropolitano.
But should United come through that unscathed, they could indeed start dreaming of a miracle charge towards European football’s holy grail.

    Mbappe Masterclass
If anybody was going to score in this clash it was always going to be Kylian Mbappe.
He had eyes for goal throughout the game and proved to be a real handful for Carvajal and the Whites’ defence.

It will take nothing short of a miracle for Sporting to find a way back in this tie when they travel to The Etihad for the return leg.
We have seen some dramatic comebacks in UEFA Champions League history, anything but City progressing to the next round is surely unthinkable.
A good night at the office for Pep Guardiola and his Man City players.
    Pep Talk
Today we were so clinical. We defend well and we punished them on the counter-attacks.Pep GuardiolaBT Sport
FT: Sporting 0 Man City 5
Bernardo Silva deservedly wins the Man of the Match award.
The Portuguese midfielder was sublime today much as he has been all season and was unlucky not to be taking the match ball home with him.
Some of those Sporting defenders will be waking up in a cold sweat thinking about Bernardo Silva tonight.
FT: Sporting 0 Man City 5
This will answer a lot of City’s critics when it comes to Europe.
People will always question Pep’s reign without the one trophy that has always eluded them.
The performance today shows that the rest of Europe may have something to worry about this season.

FT: Sporting 0 Man City 5
The referee puts the home side out of their misery.
That was a severe case of men against boys at times.
This will give City confidence in their ability to bring some of their league form into Europe.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
90+3. The Portuguese fans will be bitterly disappointed the way their night has turned out after so much hope and wonder.
They have seen an impressive performance by a quality Man City outfit.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
90+1. City have a corner and look to take it short but play breaks down.
As the home fans sing at the top of their voices showing how they are still with their team.
    Great support.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    89. This will be City’s first clean sheet of the season if they can keep their Portuguese hots out for the final few minutes.
City continue to drive forward, not giving up on their attacking intent.
Sporting clear the ball seeming more than punch-drunk now.

    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    87. Great pass from Fernandinho from the centre out to the left wing.
Zinchenko gets on the end of it and looks to whip a cross in.
He manages to get the ball in but cannot find a City shirt.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    85. City pass the ball around on the edge of the Sporting penalty area.
Constantly changing play from one side to the other, patiently waiting for an opening to make that killer pass.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    83. City continue to try and probe their opponents, putting balls in behind the defence, trying to get in behind.
Bernardo Silva is booed and whistled as he comes off for Liam Delap.
    Nathan Ake replaces Laporte.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    80. The Sporting coach seems to look as though he wishes he had taken up coaching boxing instead right now.
He looks left and right and still cannot find a white towel to throw onto the pitch to make this stop.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    77. Yellow card for Esgaio for a late challenge on the touchline on Mahrez.
Guardiola won’t be wanting to see challenges flying in on his players now in the late stages of this game.

    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    75. Ex-Leicester City striker Islam Slimani comes on for Sporting.
His entrance offers something for the home fans to cheer.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    74. Gundogen receives a yellow card as he catches the Sporting player spinning passed him.
The replay shows there was little or no contact.
    Nothing comes of the free-kick.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    72. This is the second time Sporting have conceded five goals at home in the Champions League this season.
In their opening group game, Ajax scored five goals in Lisbon.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    69. The roar of the home crowd is definitely more muted now thanks to the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s team here tonight.
Sporting needed a lot to go their way today to stand any chance of a major upset.
City weren’t having any of it.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    67. Still a long time left in this game.
Sporting do not seem to know whether to keep trying to attack in this game or to just try and prevent any more goals going in.

Sporting 0 Man City 5 – Laporte chance
    64. The ball is played deep to the back post and headed back towards the centre of the goal.
Laporte sneaks in and has a shot at goal but he flashes it over the bar.
Seemed to kick the player’s boot as he got that effort away.
    Ouch.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    63. Zinchenko receives the ball a long way out and looks to have a shot.
The ball deflects off the Sporting player for a corner.
Sporting 0 Man City 5 – City sub
    61. Zinchenko and Gundogen join the game with Foden and Stones leaving the pitch.
Perfect chance for Pep to give some players a rest.
    Sporting 0 Man City 5
    59. That really was a great strike from Sterling.
He almost passed it into the top corner there.
    Fantastic.
Goal – Man City 5-0 up!
Raheem Sterling with a sublime finish from outside the box.
    Sporting 0 Man City 4
    54. De Bruyne weights a cross in from the right-hand side.
Rodri heads it back across the box but the referee blows his whistle and awards Sporting the free-kick.
The replay shows a defender bundled over by Laporte.

    Sporting 0 Man City 4
    52. City attack down the left with Sterling.
As he looks to beat his man he is disposed to muted cheers from the home fans.
No sooner do they get a challenge in but they lose the ball again and give possession back to City.

How Real Madrid and PSG lined up last time two faced off in 2019 Champions League ahead of knockout showdown

REAL MADRID take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their mouth-watering Champions League last-16 tie this evening. It is the first time the two giants of European football have faced off in the competition since 2019.

In 2019-20, they were pitted against one another in the group stages.
PSG crushed Real 3-0 in the first match between them thanks to two goals from Angel Di Maria and a late strike by Thomas Meunier.
But back at the Bernabeu on November 26, Zinedine Zidane’s men looked to have exacted revenge leading 2-0 thanks to Karim Benzema’s double with ten minutes to go.
However, a dramatic late comeback saw Kylian Mbappe and former Madrid man Pablo Sarabia score twice in three minutes for PSG to earn the French side a 2-2 draw.
They went on to secure top spot in Group A and reach the final while Real were dumped out by Manchester City in the round of 16.
And despite the match taking place the season before last, there are still a number of changes compared with the current squads.

The centre-back pairing of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane have both moved on, with Ramos on course to face his old side.
Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal and Marcelo completed the back five in 2019 and could all feature again this time around.
And the midfield three of Casemiro, Fede Valverde and Toni Kroos could be identical once more with Karim Benzema leading the line.
However, although wide men Eden Hazard and Isco are still at the club, they are unlikely to be named in the starting XI with Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Marco Asensio and even Gareth Bale in contention.
For the away side, ex-Real stopper Keylor Navas was between the sticks behind a back four of Meunier, Thiago Silva, Presnel Kimpembe and Juan Bernat.
Idrissa Gueye, Marquinhos and Marco Verratti completed the trio in midfield with Di Maria and Mbappe either side of Mauro Icardi up front.
Neymar came off the bench for Thomas Tuchel’s side, as did goalscorer Sarabia and Julian Draxler.
Bale, Rodrygo and Luka Modric were substituted on by Zidane.
    RIVALRY RESUMES
Both sides have ambitions of going all the way and winning the Champions League this season.
For tonight’s hosts at the Parc des Princes, it would mark a first European title but the Spaniards are going for a record-extending 14th crown.
PSG now have the likes of Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Gini Wijnaldum and Lionel Messi in their ranks and Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout.
Real boss Carlo Ancelotti can now call on Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba.

Prem powerhouses have dominated Europe’s top club competition in recent years, with two out of the last three finals being all-English affairs.
Reigning champions Chelsea beat City last year, and three years ago Tottenham lost to Liverpool.
And former Liverpool, Spurs and England striker Crouch, 41, has told the Daily Mail that during this ‘exciting time for English football’ he can see the famous continental cup heading back to Blighty again.
He said: “I cannot see much past the Premier League clubs.
“Liverpool and City are my favourites and I’m struggling to split them in Europe.
“Chelsea, crowned world champions over the weekend, have a real opportunity to defend the trophy too.
