But this year’s showpiece event could be under threat because of Russia’s decision to send troops into the Ukraine.
Where is the 2022 Champions League final being held?
The 2022 Champions League final is set to be hosted in the Russian city of St Petersburg on May 28, 2022.
This year’s nominated venue, 64,000-capacity Gazprom Arena was opened in 2017 and was built to host matches at the 2018 World Cup.
Also known as the Kretovsky Stadium, after the island on which the ground resides, the structure cost just under £500million to get finished.
The Gazprom Arena was selected in September 2019 as the host city for the 2022.
But after Russia’s continued agitation, movement of troops into and subsequent invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Uefa decided to convene an emergency meting.
As SunSport reported, Uefa said the decision was “following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours” and that the meeting would “evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions”.
Where is the 2023 Champions League final being hosted?
The 2023 Champions League final will be held at Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
The venue was supposed to host the 2021 final, but it was moved because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Ataturk Olympic Stadium hosted the 2005 final, when Liverpool famously beat AC Milan on penalties having been 3-0 down at half time.
Which city is hosting the 2024 and 2025 Champions League finals?
The 2024 Champions League final is being held at Wembley Stadium in London in May of that year.
The final date for Wembley is yet to be confirmed, but it will likely be in late May or early June.

Supercomputer predicts Champions League winner after first leg of last-16 round but it’s agony for Man Utd and Chelsea

MANCHESTER UNITED, Chelsea and Liverpool will have to endure the pain of seeing Manchester City lift their first Champions League trophy at the end of the season, a supercomputer has predicted.Pep Guardiola’s troops were pipped to Europe’s top club trophy by Premier League rivals Chelsea last season, suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Blues.

But a supercomputer has backed City boss Guardiola to get his hands on the trophy this season

But City look firm favourites to make it to the final in May after their route of Sporting Lisbon – who they battered 5-0 last Tuesday.
And Bettingexpert’s supercomputer has predicted the reigning Premier League champions will finally land the trophy that’s eluded them during the Sheikh Mansour era.
According to their algorithm, City will lift the trophy after beating their domestic title rivals Liverpool in the final.
Defending champions Chelsea are expected to fall at the semi-final stage along with 2019/20 winners Bayern Munich.
It’s been predicted that interim United manager Ralf Rangnick won’t guide his hot-and-cold Red Devils past the quarter-final stage.
And Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain are expected to exit the competition at the same hurdle.

The supercomputer’s prediction doesn’t make good viewing for Spanish big boys Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
The La Liga outfits are expected to be dumped out of the tournament in the round-of-16 following their first-leg ties with PSG and United.
A Betting Expert spokesperson said: “Pep Guardiola’s long wait for another Champions League success is about to come to an end according to our supercomputer.
“Liverpool will hope to prove the prediction wrong and get the better of their Premier League title rivals, but City are deemed to be the best in Europe as things stand.”
Despite City being well on course to make the quarter-finals and possibly the final itself, Guardiola is refusing to get ahead of himself.
He said: “In the quarter-finals, if we go to the next round, it will be in a month and I don’t know what will happen.

“We almost made a perfect Champions League last season. We played 13 or 14 games, we won 11, and drew one – when we were already qualified against Porto.
“We lost the final and it was like ‘What a f failure this team is’ – and it was not true. We made a perfect Champions League but in the final, we didn’t perform as we normally do.
“That’s why, against a top side, a world champion – I congratulate them publicly for the first time to be Club World Cup champions – and the margin of the Champions League is in this detail.
“I am not going to hide behind the 0-5. We made in general very good things but we didn’t read the spaces to attack them in the way they move. The space was there and it didn’t really work.”
The Champions League will resume action on March 8, with the return fixtures from the first leg of the last-16 ties being played out over two days.

Do away goals count double in the Champions League and are extra time and penalties played? New Uefa rules revealed

GET ready for more drama with the Champions League and Europa League continuing into the knockout stages.Chelsea lifted last year’s CL trophy after seeing off Man City in an all-Premier League final – and the Blues begin their title defence against Zenit on September 14.

But this season there are BIG changes to how teams can go through in knockout stages of games.
Do away goals count in Champions League and Europa League matches?
Away goals have been a feature of European knockout games since 1965.
But this campaign things are going to be different.
After years of speculation, Uefa have finally decided to scrap the away goals rule this season in both Champions League and Europa League knockout games over two-legs.
As such, a tied aggregate score will now be the determining factor in sending a tie into extra-time.
Should the scores still be level after the extra 30 minutes, we go to penalties.
The law previously gave a significant advantage to sides who hit the back of the net on the road, but drew criticism from many fans.

Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin explained the decision: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years.
“Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.
“The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.

“There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.
“It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was.
“Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the Uefa Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home.”
It means Bayern Munich could be the last team ever knocked out of the Champions League on away goals when they drew 3-3 on aggregate with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
PSG won the first leg 3-2 and Bayern edged them 1-0 in the second but were knocked out due to the now defunct rule.
Are there extra time and penalties in the Champions League and Europa League if scores are tied?
Yes. If the aggregate scores are level after two 90-minute games, the match goes to extra time in the second leg.
If the scores are level at the end of extra time then we will have penalty kicks to decide the winner. More

    Ralf’s relief
When speaking to BT Sport, Ralf Rangnick said:
“I don’t know if I rescued it, but after the performance in the first half, it could only get better.
“What we played in the first half, I still can’t believe what we did. We played without conviction, without all the necessary aggression, that’s why we really struggled.
“Second half we did better, and with another ten minutes, we might have even won the game. But we have to play better.
“I was very disappointed with our performance in the first half. We were far too apprehensive, and didn’t take any risks, without any deep runs or verticality.
“Anthony Elanga is playing as if his dream has come true. I wish a few other players would take him a role model, not because he’s doing everything right, but he’s enjoying himself on the pitch, and that’s what it’s all about.”

“I think that was my first touch as well!”
“I’ve dreamt of moments like this, scoring in the Champions League. A big occasion like this, against a top European team like Atletico Madrid, is a dream come true.”
“But it’s only the first half, and we’ve got to be ready for Old Trafford in a couple of weeks.”
“I want to give it 150% every time I step on the pitch.”
“I appreciate the boss, every time he puts me on I want to repay the favour to him.”
“He said to me to just do what I always do, make the defenders scared and run in behind.”
“I wanted a good result for the fans because they have travelled a long way.”

Rashford shoots from distance but his attempt flies into the upper tier of the Wanda Metropolitano.
Man Utd are enjoying a positive spell at the moment, but they are just lacking the cutting edge in front of goal.
    55. Atletico Madrid 1-0 Man Utd
The ball is crossed to Fernandes in the box.
He attempts to bring it down but his touch runs away from him and Savic is there to make the tackle and clear the danger.
    48. Atletico Madrid 1-0 Man Utd
    Atletico Madrid have a corner.
Correa sends the ball into the penalty area and Maguire heads away.
But, Llorente is there to win it back on the edge of the box and volleys towards goal.
    His effort runs wide.
Man Utd are under pressure again.
Kick Off – Atletico Madrid 1-0 Man Utd
    We’re back underway!
This is a huge 45 minutes for Man Utd.
Half Time – Atletico Madrid 1-0 Man Utd
Atletico Madrid have played with high intensity from the off, forcing errors from their opposition and then capitalising on them.
The Man Utd defenders have looked nervous throughout the first half, and some might say that the Red Devils are lucky to be trailing by just one goal.
Correa, Felix and Kondogbia have all been excellent so far.

Man Utd verdict: Rangnick got tactics wrong but came up trumps with his subs as Elanga saves boss vs Atletico Madrid

RALF RANGNICK cannot keep relying on his Swedish teenage star to make an El of an impact off the bench. But at least the Manchester United boss was brave enough to fix his tactical mistakes to help his team get a result.

But his decision to start Victor Lindelof was the wrong oneCredit: AFP
The Red Devils were pegged back for nearly all of the first half by Atletico Madrid but escaped from the Spanish capital with a vital draw thanks to Anthony Elanga.
The 19-year-old came off the bench for the second-straight game to score and earn a vital Champions League last-16 first leg draw.
But despite battling back from Joao Felix’s early header, there are still plenty of questions for Rangnick.
The surprise choice of Victor Lindelof at right-back in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot raised a few eyebrows but it failed to provide a spark that Ralf Rangnick was looking for.
His two defensive rivals offer far more going forward and are a lot more comfortable on the ball, which resulted in United having no outlet on the right.
He made a great sliding challenge to deny Jose Luis Gimenez early on and got a couple of clearances in, but in truth the Swede was given the runaround all night by Renan Lodi and Joao Felix.

With half an hour on the clock, Lindelof to Raphael Varane was the highest pass combination in the match – and that told you everything you needed to know about they starved Marcus Rashford.
Alongside him it was Raphael Varane, who is still failing to show the composure he showed at Real Madrid, and Harry Maguire, whose slow reaction allowed Felix’s header to open the scoring, and Luke Shaw down the left.
And the four of them had plenty of work to do throughout the opening period as Atletico’s press had United on the ropes.
Not that the Red Devils made it hard for the LaLiga champions as everyone came short instead of running behind, a piece of cake for Diego Simeone’s men.
Up top the frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo hardly got a kick and had to wait until the 36th minute for his first opportunity against his old city rivals.
Rashford wasted one chance to tee-him up while Jadon Sancho also struggled to make an impact on his limited service.
And the stat that summed it all up was that United failed to have a single touch in the opposition box in the first half of a Champions League game for the first time since the 2005/06 season.
United legend Paul Scholes hit the nail on the head at half time when he told BT Sport that his old team had been ‘bullied’ and ‘that all the problems have come down the right side’ where Lindelof was.
    CH-CH-CHANGES
But fair play to Rangnick, shortly after the restart he quickly made amends with a triple sub.
The awful Paul Pogba was hooked for the second straight game and replaced with Nemanja Matic to add more steel in the midfield and stop the Atletico press.
Lindelof’s misery was over as Aaron Wan-Bissaka took over at full-back and Alex Telles was deployed at the back on the other flank.
Instantly United looked stronger and began to press – but still talisman Ronaldo could not get involved.
The Red Devils were enjoying most of the possession but were lacking bite with the Portuguese legend, Jadon Sancho and Rashford all ineffective.
But when you have an ace up your sleeve like the talented teen Elanga then you always have a chance.
Bruno Fernandes was one of the worst performers on the pitch, but he showed a glimpse of his magic with the perfectly-weighted pass for the sub to latch on to a finish – albeit not as sweetly as he would have liked.
It’s plain to see that there is still plenty of work for United to do – as you can see from our player ratings – but the boss holding up his hands when he has got it wrong is always a good start to making things better.

Benfica 2-2 Ajax LIVE RESULT: Yaremchuk earns hosts draw as Haller scores at both ends – Champions League reaction

TWO of Europe’s most historically successful clubs played out a stalemate in the Champions League.Ajax took the lead through Dusan Tadic before the hosts equalised with a Sebastian Haller own goal.
But Haller then netted at the right end to put the champions of Holland back in front.
However, Roman Yaremchuk headed in an equaliser for Benfica with 20 minutes left.
The Ukrainian star then revealed a shirt with his country’s coat of arms, and was booked for it.
    FT: Benfica 2-2 Ajax
With two free-scoring teams facing each other today we were always going to be guaranteed goals.
It was definitely a game of two-halves with Ajax looking capable of opening up Benfica at will in the first 45 minutes.
The Eagles came out with some passion after a team-talk from Nelson Verissimo and the Dutch were made to pay for not killing the game off when they had control.

    FT: Benfica 2-2 Ajax
The referee brings the game to an end.
Probably a fair result over the 90 minutes with Benfica really coming out in the second-half and taking control of the game.
Some of the refereeing decisions may have impacted the game but it is now over to Antony or Nunez to make a difference in the return leg and take advantage of being eligible to play.
Benfica 2-2 Ajax – Antony chance!
90+2. The corner comes in and is headed clear but only to the feet of Antony on the edge of the box.
He takes one touch and looks to find the top corner.
    The keeper saves at full-stretch.

    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    90. We will have four minutes of additional time.
    Ajax are on the attack.
Vertonghen heads it out for a corner.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    88. It would be ironic if Nunez happens to win Benfica the game when it comes to the second leg in Amsterdam.
I am sure there would be some very disgruntled Dutch fans.
The referee has now stopped the game for cramp.
New levels being reached today in officiating.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    86. VAR and the competency of officials is brought into question again here as Antony receives a yellow card for trying to headbutt Nunez.
Am all for keeping eleven players on the pitch but I cannot fathom how that was not a red.
    VAR remains silent.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    84. Taraabt is substituted for Bernardo.
Such a talent but often seems to fail to deliver.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    82. Seeing the replay for the Benfica equaliser, the Ajax keeper will not want to see that again.
A good shot yes, a good hand by the keeper but he committed the cardinal sin, palming the ball back into the danger area.
    An easy finish for Miranchuk.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    80. Big ten minutes for the home team here.
They have been second best to Ajax in the first half but have looked a different team in the second-half.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    77. Nunez is conducting the fans now and trying to get them to eb the twelfth man here.
Ajax are looking exposed now and frail defensively for the first time this evening.
Benfica are pushing on for a winning goal.

    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    75. Darwin Nunez is causing all sorts of problems for Ajax.
Again he gets to the byline and looks to square it to a Benfica player but Timber slides in and blocks it for a corner.
The cross comes in but is wasted and gifts possession back to Ajax.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    74. VAR was actually checking as to whether Ajax should have had a penalty in the build-up that led to the Benfica goal.
I think the referee would have needed security to leave the pitch had he disallowed the home team’s goal to award the opposition a penalty.
    Benfica 2-2 Ajax
    72. Ramos shoots from outside the box and Pasveer makes a one-handed save.
He palms it into the air and Miranchuk slots home the rebound.
    Estadio Da Luz erupts!
Goal – Miranchuk equalises for Benfica!
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    69. Otamendi is penalised for the foul.
Big chance there for Miranchuk but it was cleared from heading towards the goal as he went around the keeper.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    67. As the game goes on, the need for Benfica to find a goal grows.
This opens them up to the counter-attack from Ajax.
The Eagles are snatching at their chances in this second-half.
They need to work the goalkeeper at the very least.

    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    65. Benfica try to create something with patient build-up play out wide.
They manage to fashion a chance but the Ajax defender blocks it and the ball goes for a corner.
Ramos goes down as the cross comes in looking for a penalty.
He has gone down very easily there.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    62. Antony has shown some quick feet down the right-wing tonight.
The ball is played to the back post to Mazraoui whose shot is saved by the keeper well.
The linesman puts his flag up for offside.
The replay shows he wasn’t and VAR would have allowed the goal.
This linesman is having a shocker tonight.
Benfica 1-2 Ajax – Benfica chance!
    59. Silva does brilliantly down the right-hand side and fizzes a ball in across the Ajax penalty area.
No Benfica player can get a touch on it and you wonder whether he would have been better off going alone.
The home fans have their heads in their hands.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    57. Gravenberch gets the ball from a neat pass from Tadic.
He doesn’t get the ball under his spell and it goes out for a Benfica goal kick.
That was a decent chance wasted there.
Benfica 1-2 Ajax – Benfica go close!
    55. On the edge of the box Everton gets a shot away which deflects and wrong foots the Ajax keeper.
He can only look from the floor as the ball goes inches pass his post.

Benfica 1-2 Ajax – Chance for Tadic
    53. Great ball by Tadic down the left wing with a no-look pass.
Haller sets off, cuts inside and sets up a chance before the linesman belatedly blows his whistle for offside.
The replay shows he wasn’t offside at all.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    51. Quite often the home side are their worst enemies.
If you cannot retain possession, you make the game of football a very difficult one at times.
This time Nunez gets down the left and tries to get a cross in but the ball is blocked for a Benfica corner.
Daley Blind heads clear, not for the first time this evening.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    49. Discipline will be key in this half for The Eagles.
They have a lot of players on yellow cards who if they receive another will miss the return leg in Holland.
    Benfica 1-2 Ajax
    47. Benfica breaks out with Ramos who finds Everton down the right wing.
Not a brilliant ball to the player but he really cannot do anything with it.
Ramos receives a yellow card for a challenge on Timber.

Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo fuming with referee over his treatment by Atletico Madrid as he’s given brutal reception

However, Ronaldo is sure to wake up with a few bruises tomorrow after some rough treatment on the field.
That’s because he was on the receiving end of some meaty challenges at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The tone was set before kick-off when the ex-Real Madrid star received raucous boos from the Atletico crowd when his name was shown on the big screen.
Ronaldo was continually jeered throughout the heated clash, which saw NINE players booked.
However, the first half saw ref Ovidiu Hategan dish out just one booking to Marcos Llorente for a foul on Harry Maguire.
And as the whistle blew for the break, Ronaldo confronted the official to vent his anger at the other challenges which went unpunished.

In the end, a further three Atletico players ended up receiving yellows, with five United aces also booked.
But it will be the Red Devils feeling the happier of the two after fighting back for a draw.
That’s because Atleti dominated proceedings from the off.
And they made a flying start when Joao Felix headed home with just eight minutes on the clock.
However, a tactical masterstroke from United paid off when sub Anthony Elanga netted an 80th minute equaliser to save some face.

‘Send him back to Hull’ – Man Utd fans slam Harry Maguire over shocking defending for Felix’s opener for Atletico Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED fans ordered Ralf Rangnick to send Harry Maguire ‘back to Hull’ after his shocking defending saw Atletico Madrid score just EIGHT minutes into their 1-1 Champions League draw.Joao Felix fired the hosts ahead early on in the Champions League last 16, first leg tie at the Wanda Metropolitano, before super-sub Anthony Elaga rescued a draw for the visitors.

Man Utd fans slammed Harry Maguire after Joao Felix scored in the 8th minute for Atletico MadridCredit: Getty
Renan Lodi picked up the ball on the left wing before swinging a sublime cross into United’s box.
Felix then darted off Raphael Varane before leaping above Maguire to head the ball past David De Gea.
It was a brilliant goal from the £113million Portugal star, especially considering he is just 5ft9in while Maguire stands at over 6f3in.
And Red Devils fans were far from happy as they delivered a scathing assessment on their captain’s efforts.
