CHELSEA progressed to the Champions League quarter-final with a 2-1 win in Lille.Inspired by captain Cesar Azpilicueta, the Blues came from behind to win on the night and secure a 4-1 aggregate victory.

But it was not a night without worry as Lille pressured from the off and hit the post with the score at 1-1.
Chelsea proved why they have been so successful in this competition under Thomas Tuchel, who continues to pick up results amid Chelsea’s off-pitch issues.
It was an accomplished team performance with the only negative being Andreas Christensen’s first-half injury.

Dived the right way for the penalty but could not save it. Had a few other shots to deal with that he managed well, some of his distribution was questionable though at times.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 9
His determination and work rate was insane again. Made some good tackles and blocks and contributed in attacks as much as he could.
His run to get on the end of Mason Mount’s cross to score was amazing and he took the finish well.

Sometimes a little too calm and slow to make the pass, but even still, there is nobody better at playing out from the back than Silva and he was needed as Lille were pressing intensely.

Silly handball to give away a penalty in the first half but he redeemed himself for that error with a lovely assist for Pulisic to score the equaliser.
Not his best game though really and struggled to adjust in the midfield three Tuchel deployed.

Not one of his greatest games really in terms of what he usually brings to the table.
He wasn’t quite keeping the ball well enough in the first half but improved a lot in the second half when he was playing a little deeper.
Matteo Kovacic – 8
Running the show really and never giving it away. Keeping his lovely close control and dribbling ability was amazing again. Did well to help Chelsea keep the ball under pressure.
He was taken off at half-time which was shocking, must be injured, you’d assume.
Christian Pulisic – 8
Took his equalising goal very well and stayed composed when through on goal.
I prefer to see him out wide so there was moments he looked uncomfortable, but had a very good game really overall and was actually moved out wide.
Kai Havertz – 8
Some nice clever touches from him and he was also looking strong on the ball holding it up when needed.
Looked dangerous and direct when he dropped in and got on the ball.

Had to come on as an early sub for Christensen.
Got booked almost instantly for a silly challenge and looked a little uncomfortable after that bar some good drives forward with the ball.

Really good impact when he came on and provided a lovely assist for Azpilicueta to score. Full of energy and really direct.

But this season there are BIG changes to how teams can go through in knockout stages of games.
Do away goals count in Champions League and Europa League matches?
Away goals have been a feature of European knockout games since 1965.
But this campaign things are going to be different.
After years of speculation, Uefa have finally decided to scrap the away goals rule this season in both Champions League and Europa League knockout games over two-legs.
As such, a tied aggregate score will now be the determining factor in sending a tie into extra-time.
Should the scores still be level after the extra 30 minutes, we go to penalties.
The law previously gave a significant advantage to sides who hit the back of the net on the road, but drew criticism from many fans.

Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin explained the decision: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years.
“Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.
“The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.
“There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.
“It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was.
“Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the Uefa Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home.”
It means Bayern Munich could be the last team ever knocked out of the Champions League on away goals when they drew 3-3 on aggregate with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
PSG won the first leg 3-2 and Bayern edged them 1-0 in the second but were knocked out due to the now defunct rule.
Are there extra time and penalties in the Champions League and Europa League if scores are tied?
Yes. If the aggregate scores are level after two 90-minute games, the match goes to extra time in the second leg.

But crippling sanctions imposed on the club in recent days mean they could be without fans for a crunch quarter-final home match, should they progress to that stage.
Chelsea are not allowed to sell any match tickets while still under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, with the billionaire Russian oligarch having his assets frozen.
Uefa are not willing to sell tickets to fans directly, which could result in the game played behind closed doors.
The club have been placed under a special licence allowing them to operate but not generate any revenue.

MANCHESTER UNITED were dumped out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, losing 2-1 on aggregate in their last-16 tie.It marks another disappointing European campaign for the Red Devils – who have struggled for success in the continent’s premier competition since reaching the Champions League final in 2011.

This was something first highlighted by Jose Mourinho in 2018 after Man Utd were knocked out by Sevilla in the first knockout round while he was manager.
He listed the club’s European exits since 2011 and said: “So in seven years, with four different managers, once not qualified for Europe, twice out in the group phase [of the Champions League], and the best was a quarter-final.
“This is football heritage.”
Since Mourinho’s departure, United’s European record has not really improved.
