MANCHESTER CITY battled through a brutal night in Madrid that saw Atletico’s Stefan Savic try to throw Phil Foden off the pitch, headbutt Raheem Sterling and pull Jack Grealish’s hair.The defender somehow escaped with just a yellow card then tried to get at unused sub Grealish in the tunnel before Spanish police stepped in.

The flashpoint came in the 90th minute of an ill-tempered draw at the Wanda Metropolitano as Pep Guardiola’s side battled to a 1-0 aggregate win and a spot in the Champions League semi-finals.
Foden was viciously scythed down by Atletico centre-back Felipe as City tried to wind down the clock.
As the England playmaker – who had been targeted all game – rolled in agony on the turn, Savic inexplicably ran at Foden.
And Savic – who played 21 times for City between 2011 and 2012 – sparked utter chaos as he confronted Foden and heavy-handedly attempted to drag him off the pitch.

The England ace was protected by his team-mate Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was warming up.
But Savic’s needless reaction caused a mass brawl including players, substitutes and coaches in the corner.
Replays even showed the Montenegrin defender shove his head into Sterling’s forehead behind the referee’s back while he dealt with Felipe’s mindless protests.
It did not go unnoticed by sub Grealish who then riled Savic even further with an apparent four-letter jibe.

Savic responded by pulling the £100million man’s hair – a week on from their spat at the Etihad – as the brawl escalated around them.
Despite all of this, and the aid of VAR, Savic somehow escaped with just a yellow card.
De Bruyne and Kyle Walker had already both hobbled off in the second half after fouls from Atleti players as the home side tried to intimidate City.
But the English champs held firm and saw off their ten-man rivals in nine minutes of added time to earn a semi-final showdown with city rivals Real.
That was not the end of the drama, though.

Reserve City goalkeeper Scott Carson jokingly appeared to offer to take things outside as he revelled in reaching the Champions League semi-finals, where they will return to Madrid to take on Real.

City’s defensive wall – which has now conceded seven clean sheets in eight away matches in all comps – stood firm with John Stones and Aymeric Laporte magnificent.
And in the end Kevin de Bruyne’s first leg goal proved to be enough.
