Man Utd legends Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sir Alex Ferguson reunite at Ibrox after PSV’s draw against Rangers

MANCHESTER UNITED icon Ruud van Nistelrooy reunited with Sir Alex Ferguson at Ibrox on Tuesday after PSV’s Champions League qualifier against Rangers. The Dutchman, who was appointed PSV boss in March, travelled to Glasgow with his squad earlier this week to take on Rangers in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying play-offs.

The Dutchman met up with Ferguson and posted this picture on social mediaCredit: Twitter / @RvN1779
Eredivisie giants PSV got off to a positive start as Ibrahim Sangare broke the deadlock during the first half.
But, it took just three minutes for Rangers to draw level courtesy of a fantastic finish from Antonio Colak.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side then took the advantage with 20 minutes to go, but PSV managed to equalise shortly after.
The game finished 2-2, meaning the winner of next week’s clash at the Philips Stadion will earn a place in this season’s Champions League.

Despite the result, Van Nistelrooy was still in good spirits after the game and even took the time to chat with former Man Utd boss Ferguson, who was watching from the stands.
He then posted a picture with the United legend on Instagram and Twitter with a caption that read: “With the gaffer at Ibrox after the game.”
Van Nistelrooy spent five years with The Red Devils from 2001 to 2006 before moving to Real Madrid.
He won the Premier League title once at Old Trafford under the management of Ferguson.

But, after retiring from his playing career in 2012, he decided to follow in the Scot’s footsteps and transition into coaching.
Van Nistelrooy was satisfied with his team’s performance against Rangers on Tuesday, but also admitted that they struggled at times.
He told BT Sport: “I have to say in the first half I thought Rangers were the better team.
“We had a good start. We had a chance with Luuk de Jong in the first five minutes but Rangers really took a hand of the game and had some good possession play, and created some chances so we struggled.
“Unfortunately the free kick for Rangers was an unfortunate moment for our goalkeeper but I think the better of the chances were for us and, in the end, I think 2-2 was a fair result.” More

Rangers 2 PSV 2: Colak and Lawrence put Gers on brink of huge win but Dutch leave tie all to play for

PSV’s goalkeeper chucked one in.But this was night when it felt like it was Rangers who let a precious first-leg victory slip from their grasp.
Antonio Colak celebrates scoring the equaliser
Walter Benitez made a £40million mistake at Ibrox as he spilled a speculative Tom Lawrence free-kick into his net.
But after battling back from a goal down to take the lead Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s side let the Dutch side off the hook.
Ruud van Nistlerooy’s men went ahead through Ibrahim Sangaré before Antonio Colak made it 1-1 with his fourth goal in four games.
That Lawrence strike and monumental goalkeeping error turned the tie on its head.
But unfortunately Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s side conceded a late second goal on the night to Armando Obispo.
It’s still there for Rangers ahead of next week’s return leg in Eindhoven – but the frustration is that this result could have been even better.
Dutch teams rarely lack confidence and PSV were no different.
Van Nistelrooy’s stylish side had a real swagger about them in this first-leg both individually and collectively.
    Most read in Football
In winger Cody Gakpo they have a £40million player Manchester United see as the answer to their problems.
Sir Alex Ferguson watched from the director’s box and is sure to have been impressed with the way the 23 year-old swanned around the pitch.
For the first half hour the signs were worrying for Van Bronckhorst’s side with meaningful possession hard to come by.
PSV could have gone ahead inside the first handful of minutes but thankfully Luuk de Jong failed to his the target with a wayward volley.
    It was a proper let-off.
With the rain falling the pitch was fast and slick and it definitely suited the Dutch outfit.
Big Sangaré controlled the game from the middle of the park with his ability on the ball frightening.
Rangers slowly but surely played their way into it, though, and started to test keeper Walter Benitez.
Malik Tillman had a difficult first-half by his standards with his touch letting him down more often than not.
But he had Rangers’ first real attempt at goal with a shot from the edge of the box after 22 minutes.
Soon after that he got into a good position inside the penalty area but just couldn’t sort his feet out to get a dig away.

The home fans took a huge lift from those opportunities and did everything to give their team a jolt of adrenaline.
They screamed for a penalty on the half-hour mark when a corner appeared to handled in the air by Jordan Teze.
But the Italian referee signalled he’d seen the incident clearly and there was no VAR intervention going Rangers’ way.
It was all so fast and furious with Rangers doing everything to take the lead.
But soon it was the 600 PSV supporters who were celebrating as their side took the lead after 36 minutes.
It was such a scrappy, ugly goal to concede from a Rangers point of view with their defending at a corner letting them down.
Connor Goldson didn’t get any purchase on his attempted headed clearance with the ball hitting his skipper Tavernier.
André Ramalho stuck out a leg to divert the ball back to Sangare who lashed it past Jon McLaughlin and into the net.
With 37 minutes on the clock it was tough on Rangers who’d just started to impose themselves.

Yet is PSV thought they were going to get it easy after taking the lead they had another think coming.
Within just three minutes to be exact.
Rangers made it 1-1 with a brilliantly worked goal down the right with Steven Davis playing a sensational little ball for Tavernier.
He darted onto it, lifted his head and picked out Colak with a perfect cut-back.
There was still plenty for the Croatian striker to do to find the net but his finish couldn’t have been better as it found the bottom corner.
PSV started to show signs of rocking as Rangers went for them in the closing minutes of the half. But they managed to into the away changing room level.
The tie was on a knife-edge going into the second half with anything possible.
Colak came close to grabbing his second of the night but Benitez pulled off a save before PSV raised their game again.
Rangers got lucky three times in quick succession
Ismael Saibari nipped between Goldson and Borna Barisic before stabbing his shot half a yard wide of the target.
He then blasted over before drilling another effort straight at keeper McLaughlin who got everything behind it.
With 25 minutes left to play the Dutch side fancied their chances of getting another goal with Rangers looking weary.
Davis and John Lundstram were terrific in the first-half but their energy levels dropped and they fell out of the game the longer it wore on.
It was beginning to feel like a 1-1 draw would be a good result for Rangers.

But then out of nothing Rangers were given a gift in 70 minutes.
Tillman was fouled 30 yards from goal with Lawrence grabbing the ball and sizing it up.
It looked like he was too far out to trouble the keeper.
But the midfielder’s dipping effort deceived Benitez who let the ball squirm through his grasp and into the net.
Ibrox erupted but soon heads were in hands as PSV levelled with 12 minutes of normal time left.
Once again Rangers failed to deal with a corner with Obispo out-jumping Goldson to power his header into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Chelsea’s new owners ready to show commitment to Thomas Tuchel by DOUBLING length of German’s contract

CHELSEA have opened talks with Thomas Tuchel about doubling the length of his contract as boss. The coach who won them a second Champions League title has two years left on his existing deal.

But negotiations are already underway into adding another two seasons as a reward for his success and commitment.
The outspoken German stood by Chelsea even when the club’s existence was in doubt earlier this year.
Tuchel was adamant he would not leave when former owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, triggering an emergency takeover.
New owners have since come in led by American tycoon Todd Boehly and the pair are forging a strong working relationship.

Tuchel has spent more than £100million on new signings Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella and he does not want to stop there.
Barcelona pair Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Leicester’s Wesley Fofana and Everton star Anthony Gordon are being targeted as Tuchel bids to build a new era of glory at Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel signed a 17-month deal initially with Chelsea when he took over from sacked Frank Lampard in late January 2021.
A three year extension kicked in after he led them to a second European crown that summer with victory over Manchester City in Paris for which he was named UEFA coach of the year.
    Most read in Football
Victory in the European Super Cup was followed by winning the Club World Cup in February – the only major trophy that had eluded Chelsea until then.
Just over a year down the line, the new consortium in charge has been hugely impressed with Tuchel’s qualities and leadership and want to tie his future down even more to the club.
Ambitious Chelsea are planning for the long term in their bid to upset Manchester City and Liverpool’s domination of the Premier League.
Tuchel lost both domestic cup finals to Liverpool last season but is still seen as the man to lead Chelsea into a new era of consistent success at home and abroad.
Talks over a new deal are at an early stage.
But the board are hopeful they can convince Tuchel to sign a contract that will keep him as head coach until 2026 at a club where only two managers have lasted more than two years since Jose Mourinho’s first spell in charge in 2004. More

In 37 appearances for the Parisians he’s scored 14 goals and assisted 16, but many fans have been unimpressed with his performances.

Xavi is already known to be interested in signing Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, who has not denied rumours of a proposed £80million move to Spain, but now Messi has emerged as a top target.
Balague tweeted: “Clearly the midfield of Barcelona, with the exception of Pedri, has not got the subtle touch/thinking necessary to play as Xavi wants, to find the right tempo, to feed forwards (and Busquets has played his best football).
“Hence Xavi wanting Bernardo Silva (and asking for Messi).”
The Argentina legend’s father and agent Jorge Messi was claimed to be on the phone to Barca chiefs repeatedly at the start of the year in a bid to negotiate a return for his son.
Messi’s PSG contract expires next summer, so it will likely cost his former club to bring him back.
