      Do away goals count double in the Champions League?

      GET ready for more drama with the Champions League fast approaching.Here is all the latest on how the away goals rule will be used during the competition.

      Do away goals count in Champions League and Europa League matches?
      Away goals had been a feature of European knockout games since 1965.
      But in 2021, this all changed.
      After years of speculation, Uefa  decided to scrap the away goals rule in Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League qualifiers and knockout games over two-legs.
      As such, any tied aggregate score will now send a tie into extra-time.
      Should the scores still be level after the extra 30 minutes, we go to penalties.
      The law previously gave a significant advantage to sides who hit the back of the net on the road, but drew criticism from many fans.

      Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin explained the decision: “The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of Uefa competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various Uefa meetings over the last few years.
      “Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.
      “The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams – especially in first legs – from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.
      “There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.
      “It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was.
      “Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the Uefa Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home.”
      It means Bayern Munich could be the last team ever knocked out of the Champions League on away goals when they drew 3-3 on aggregate with Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
      PSG won the first leg 3-2 in Munich before Bayern edged them 1-0 in the second leg in Paris but were knocked out due to the now defunct rule.Are there extra time and penalties in the Champions League and Europa League if scores are tied?
      Yes. If the aggregate scores are level after two 90-minute games, the match goes to extra time in the second leg.

      Tottenham face horror Champions League draw on return to Europe’s elite competition after two years

      TOTTENHAM face a brutal return to the Champions League when the group-stage draw is made on Thursday. After a year in the Europa League and one in the Conference League, Antonio Conte’s side finished fourth last season and secured a place in Pot 2 alongside fellow English sides Chelsea and Liverpool as well as Barcelona and Juventus.

      Conte nor Spurs have ever won Europe’s top competition – although the North Londoners did reach the final in 2019 and made the quarters in their first appearance in 2010-11 but were thumped 5-0 by Real Madrid.
      And they could be pitted against the holders in another Group of Death – just as they were in 2017-18.
      As champions of Europe and Spain, Real Madrid are in Pot 1.
      The addition of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco makes them an even stronger side as they look to land a record-extending 15th crown.

      Joining Real in Pot 1 are Europa League champs Eintracht Frankfurt as well as Uefa’s top-ranked team Bayern Munich and fellow league winners Manchester City, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto and Ajax – with no Russian teams allowed. 
      Tottenham cannot face Pep Guardiola’s men as they are from the same country but trips to the San Siro, Allianz Arena or Parc des Princes would also be stern tests.
      Speaking of the San Siro, arguably the strongest team in Pot 3 are Inter Milan after being pipped by their stadium rivals to the league title last season. 
      Conte’s former side, whom he led to Serie A glory a year ago, have signed Romelu Lukaku, Andre Onana, Robin Gosens, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Joaquin Correa this summer.

      The teams in Pot 3 are virtually all done – with Benfica knowing they will slip in if they win their play-off against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday. 
      Borussia Dortmund, Red Bull Salzburg, Napoli and Sporting Lisbon are among the big hitters in Pot 3. 
      And to complete the Group of Death, Tottenham could have to play Marseille. 
      They are guaranteed their spot in the Champions League group stages after finishing second in Ligue 1 last term. 
      The additions of Alexis Sanchez and Nuno Tavares as well as permanent deals for Pau Torres, Matteo Guendouzi and Cengiz Under make Les Phoceens a real threat. 
      Pot 4 will definitely include Celtic and Club Brugge.

      The remaining spots will be filled this week through the final play-off round with Rangers, PSV Eindhoven, Copenhagen and Red Star Belgrade hoping to qualify – rather than dropping into the Europa League.

      CHELSEA face a potential Champions League Group of Death in Thursday’s draw.With Manchester City taking the Pot 1 spot for winning the Premier League, Thomas Tuchel’s side must settle for a place in Pot 2 alongside fellow English sides Tottenham and Liverpool as well as Barcelona and Juventus.

      The Blues won Europe’s top competition in 2021 but fell in heartbreaking fashion to eventual champions Real Madrid last season.
      And they could be pitted against the holders in a repeat of their dramatic quarter-final.
      As champions of Europe and Spain, Real Madrid are in Pot 1.
      The addition of Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco makes them an even stronger side as they look to land a record-extending 15th crown.

      MARSEILLE have rejected the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, according to reports.Ronaldo, 37, has been trying to force an escape from Old Trafford since returning from a prolonged summer break last month.

      His disappointment following the club’s disastrous 2021-22 campaign, which saw them finish sixth in the Premier League table and without any silverware, is understood to be the main factor contributing to his desire to leave.
      New United boss Erik ten Hag was initially reluctant to let him go, but he has since had a change of heart and is now willing to consider a sale.
      Various clubs have been linked with a potential swoop for the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner including Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.
      But, a move has failed to materialise mainly due to the player’s age and wage demands.

      Marseille were the most recent side to express an interest in signing Ronaldo, however, they are no longer considering a deal.
      According to RMC Sport, the Ligue 1 side now have no intention of recruiting him.
      This acts as another huge blow to the Portugal skipper, who is eager to make a return to Champions League football.
      Ronaldo has struggled to reintegrate back into the Man Utd squad since returning from the summer break.

      Mbappe was criticised by pundits and fans alike after a video clip appeared to show him stropping when he was not given the ball on a counter-attack during PSG’s 5-2 win over Montpellier.
      To top it all off, Mbappe missed a penalty before Neymar stepped up and converted another later in the game, despite Mbappe’s pleas to take the second spot kick as well.
      After the game, Neymar appeared to like a pair of tweets criticising Mbappe’s apparent role in the team as the main penalty taker.
      The pair were scheduled to be hauled in by PSG to clear the air, but if new reports are accurate then this appears to have not provided the solution Mbappe was looking for.

      AS report that as a part of his new mega-contract Mbappe would be given the opportunity to take all of the team’s penalties and have power over club decision-making in transfers and appointments.
      However, the report adds Mbappe’s new-found power has caused a rift between him and some of his team-mates, leaving him feeling “isolated.”
      The World Cup winner has also been left “disappointed” with the club failing to sell Neymar, a move Mbappe did not object to.
      What will not be helping is Mbappe’s relatively slow start to the season.

      But he has struggled to find a suitor who would take him – with Chelsea and Bayern Munich both ruling out a bid.
      However, one option which seems to still be on the table is a loan or permanent return to his former club Sporting Lisbon.
      Ronaldo came through the club’s youth set-up before leaving for United in 2003.
      According to Foot Mercato, Hugo Viana, a former team-mate of Ronaldo’s and now the sporting director at Lisbon, is working hard to convince the Real Madrid legend to return to the club.

      Sporting can offer Ronaldo Champions League football – something United are unable to provide.
      And Erik ten Hag’s men have made the worst possible start in their attempts to return to Europe’s premier competition.

      They lost their opening game of the season 2-1 to Brighton, before being humiliated 4-0 by Brentford – a pair of results which leave them bottom of the Premier League.
      Ronaldo, who started against Brentford, will be concerned about the state of United.

      And as pointed out by broadcaster Kieran Maguire, with United finishing sixth last term, should they fail to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in a row – they will see a 30 per cent reduction in sponsorship revenue.
      That would mean United would receive £22.5m LESS from sponsors Adidas.
      Considering United’s start to the season, they may have to start preparing for that loss in sponsorship.
      Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Old Trafford was optimistically well received.

      A strong pre-season, which saw United destroy rivals Liverpool 4-0, also gave fans hope.
      However, uncertainty over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club and two straight losses in the Premier League has raised concerns.

      United were beaten at Old Trafford 2-1 by Brighton and followed it up with am embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford.
      The two losses have condemned United to the bottom of the Premier League table and they face Liverpool next.

      So there is a real possibility United will be without a point in after their opening three games – Arsenal had a similar start last term.

      United may now turn to Real Madrid’s Casemiro, who could cost £50million.
      United do, however, have an insurance policy – and it involves winning a competition they’ve conquered before.
      Ten Hag’s side will contest the Europa League this season alongside Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
      Other teams from across Europe’s top five leagues include Lazio, Roma, Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Union Berlin, Freiburg and Rennes.
      Teams who finish third place in the Champions League group stages will also drop down into Europe’s second tier competition to contest the group stages.

      But as fans read the extract in SunSport today, they could not help but snigger that the one Arsenal star who will hear that iconic music and dine at Europe’s elite table this season is Tavares.
