Who is Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim, what is his net worth and will he bid for Man Utd?

THE EMIR of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, is said to be interested in buying Manchester United. The Emir is a keen football fan, having bought Paris Saint-Germain in 2011 through Qatar Sports Investment.

The Glazers revealed in November that they were willing to listen to offers for either a stake in the Premier League giants or an outright purchase.
A number of parties have expressed an interest in buying United, which could be purchased for a world-record price for a sports franchise at £4.5billion, or more.
Interest comes from the Far East, Middle East and United States with Raines Group, the merchant bank, tasked with the sale.
However, Friday’s deadline for bids is rapidly approaching, and the Qataris are set to make the first move.

Who is Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim?
Born on June 3, 1980, the Emir is the fourth son of the previous monarch, Hamad bin Khalifa.
He took over as the head of state in 2013, when his father abdicated the throne.
Sheikh Tamim studied at Sherborne School in Dorset and at Harrow School.
He then attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he graduated in 1998.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry of the UK Royal Family attended the same training facility.
Sheikh Tamim is the current owner of PSG through Qatar Sports Investment and has imposed dominance in France.
However, the efforts to establish themselves as Europe’s best haven’t been as fruitful with the Parc des Princes club yet to win the Champions League.
Sheikh Tamim has been married three times and has thirteen children in total.
In total, the Emir has seven sons and six daughters.

What is Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim’s net worth?
Sheikh Tamim is estimated to be worth around £1.6billion alone.
But the ruling royal family’s collective net worth is estimated at around £276bn.
The Thani family hold investments in a number of properties around the world, including London’s Shard skyscraper, Olympic Village, Harrods department store, Canary Wharf, the Chelsea Barracks and New York’s Empire State Building.
The royals also hold investments in Barclays Bank, British Airways and Volkswagen.

Will Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bid for Man Utd?
    According to Bloomberg, yes.
There have reportedly been talks between the Glazers and the Qatari investors.
The report states the Qatar-based financers are “set to make an offer for Manchester United in the coming days” in a “move that would cement the country’s desire to become a major player in global sports”.
It is said the initial bid is being thrashed out with help from officials at the sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority.
The deeply unpopular Glazers want a world-record £6bn for the Old Trafford giants, who have not won a trophy since 2017 – although that figure may be lowered.
A bid for Man Utd is expected in the next few daysCredit: EPA
Can Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim own Man Utd and PSG?
There are no restrictions on an owner acquiring multiple clubs at the same time in different countries.
The owners of rivals Man City own another 10 football teams around the world.
So yes, Sheikh Tamim could own Man Utd and PSG.
Sheikh Tamim owns PSG as part of Qatar Sports InvestmentCredit: AFP
Can both teams play in Champions League?
    Per Uefa rules, no.
Uefa implemented an ‘Integrity of the Uefa Club competitions: Independence of clubs’ rule in 1998 which states that no two clubs participating in a Uefa competition may be directly or indirectly controlled by the same ownership group.
    This is defined by:

    The majority of the shareholders’ voting rights in another club in the same Uefa club competition;
    Or, another right to appoint or remove a majority of the directors in another club in the same Uefa club competition;
As well as, majority of the shareholders’ voting rights (through a shareholders’ agreement) in another club in the same Uefa club competition.

Therefore, if a Qatari group owned United while they and PSG qualify for the Champions League, the ownership group would more than likely have to choose who plays in it.
These rules have been put in to place to protect the integrity of the competition.
    Read More on The Sun
However, Sheikh Tamim and Co are looking for ways around that with the bid coming from individual Qatari investors – not being a part Qatar Sports Investment.
That would need to be proved with any ownership test certain to look into potential ties between them.

Champions League returns this week – here are the key stars looking to fire their side to club football’s ultimate prize

THE Champions League starts for “real” on Tuesday with the initial first last 16 first leg games in Milan and Paris. All four English sides negotiated their way through the group stage with Liverpool the only ones not to finish top of their section and earn the advantage of playing at home in the second leg.

But much has changed since November 2 when Joao Mario’s injury-time goal completed Benfica’s 6-1 win at Maccabi Haifa to steal top spot from PSG, with the winter window allowing teams to beef up their squads and a number of managerial switches.
SunSport looks at the eight ties and the feast of football about to kick off.
AC Milan v Tottenham (First leg Tuesday, second leg March 8)
Key men: Rafael Leao, Harry Kane
Antonio Conte could get no better boost for his recovery from that gallbladder operation than a triumph in his homeland against a club for whom he has little love.

Milan’s wretched run saw crushing defeats by Lazio and Sassuolo but they beat Torino on Friday.
Injuries and suspension mean Spurs’ midfield options are distinctly limited.
Tottenham fans will remember the 1-0 aggregate win – courtesy of a San Siro goal by Peter Crouch – at the same stage in 2011 and even older ones may recall Steve Perryman’s 1972 Uefa Cup double at White Hart Lane.

PSG v Bayern Munich (First leg Tuesday, second leg March 8)

The French champions and their Qatari owners have not even attempted to hide how much they crave the Champions League crown but PSG have been the masters at turning victory into defeat, including against Real Madrid last season.
Munich’s inconsistent form has even turned the Bundesliga campaign into a genuine contest and put unexpected pressure on coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Bayern, without Sadio Mane, have a score to settle after losing on the now-scrapped away goals rule in 2021.

Borussia Dortmund v Chelsea (First leg Wednesday, second leg March 7)
Key men: Jude Bellingham, Enzo Fernandez
Bellingham could not have a better stage to lay out his credentials for this summer’s mooted blockbuster move in what is, surprisingly, the first competitive meeting between the clubs.
Graham Potter will know that winning the Champions League might prove the easiest route back into the competition next season with Chelsea off the Prem pace but he is still working on integrating his January signings, with the spotlight on Fernandez and Joao Felix.
Dortmund have been on fire since the Bundesliga restart with five straight wins.

Club Brugge v Benfica (First leg Wednesday, second leg March 7)
Key men: Ferran Jutgla, Joao Mario
Belgian champions are the biggest outsiders left in the competition but Scott Parker has helped steady a sinking ship after being parachuted in on New Year’s Eve to replace axed Carl Hoefkens.
Benfica cashed in on Chelsea’s determination to land Enzo Fernandez but look weaker as a result.
Portuguese giants are flying at the top of the league after losing just once all season including an unbeaten group stage which saw them oust PSG for top spot.
They will be strong favourites to progress.

Eintracht Frankfurt v Napoli (First leg Feb 21, second leg March 15)
Key men: Randal Kolo Muani, Victor Osimhen
Frankfurt would have finished top of the group without Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s last-gasp winner for Spurs in Marseilles but their qualification celebrations will have been lessened by drawing the runaway Serie A leaders.
Winning a first domestic crown since the days of Diego Maradona is Naples’ main target but they have a claim to be the best team in Europe this season with Osimhen in stunning form and a thrilling and goal-laden approach.
Watch out for Georgian star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Liverpool v Real Madrid (First leg Feb 21, second leg March 15)
Key men: Mo Salah, Karim Benzema
The real glamour tie of the last 16, between two teams with 20 previous wins between them.
Liverpool are up against it with injuries and a major plunge in form meaning they probably have to go back to Istanbul and triumph again to retain their place in Europe’s elite next term, starting with this Final revenge mission.
Madrid rode their luck all the way through last season’s knock-out stage but they always seem to be able to find a way to win, with Benzema and Vinicius Junior a constant threat and midfield strings pulled by Luka Modric.

Inter Milan v Porto (First leg Feb 22, second leg March 14)
Key man: Lautaro Martinez, Mehdi Taremi
Reaching the knock-out stage for the second season running was key for the Nerazzurri and with Napoli out of sight in Serie A and Juventus deducted 15 points the San Siro outfit can target going deeper in Europe.
Inter last made the quarter-finals in 2011.
Porto showed mental strength by topping their group despite losing their opening two games and they will call on the fire and fury of the Dragao for the second leg next month.
Iranian Taremi’s goals may prove decisive.

Leipzig v Manchester City (First leg Feb 22, second leg March 14)
Key men: Christopher Nkunku, Erling Haaland
City will aim to ignore the fall-out of the Prem charges against them by finally landing the one trophy that has eluded them in the Pep Guardiola era, with Norwegian goal machine Haaland bought as the final piece in the Champions League jigsaw.
Leipzig scored three in defeat at the Etihad last term and won the reverse group stage fixture.
They now have Timo Werner back after his Prem struggles although a 12-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga was ended by surprise title contenders Union Berlin on Saturday.

FOOTBALL fans joked Valentine’s Day is cancelled thanks to a bumper week of fixtures. Couples across the country will be celebrating their love on Tuesday.

But partners of footy fanatics who have high hopes of a romantic dinner out may be left disappointed.
That is because Tuesday also marks the return of the Champions League.
After the Merseyside derby on Monday night, the European action comes back with a bang on Tuesday.
It is AC Milan vs Tottenham and a repeat of the 2020 final with Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich in a blockbuster double-header.

And the drama continues for the rest of the week with Borussia Dortmund hosting Chelsea and Scott Parker’s Club Brugges taking on Benfica on Wednesday.
Also on the same night is the eagerly-anticipated Premier League showdown between title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City at the Emirates.
Thursday sees the Europa League and Europa Conference League with Barcelona vs Manchester United the standout tie in the former.
There is also a full midweek EFL fixture list and England Women take on South Korea in the Arnold Clark Cup.

One said: “I think I’ve found the right love, I’m flattered.”
Another wrote: “Tbh 14th is football day not Valentine’s Day.”
A third joked: “Forget about flowers.”

Why Arsenal clash with Man City is on at same time as Champions League despite Premier League rules banning it

THE Premier League fixture between Arsenal and Manchester City will be played at the same time as Champions League ties despite rules banning it. The top of the table clash is all set for Wednesday 15, at the same time Club Brugge face Benfica and Borussia Dortmund welcome Chelsea.
Man City will play Arsenal at the same time Chelsea play in the Champions LeagueCredit: AP
Rules prohibit top division domestic matches occurring at the same time as European matches to not give fans across the world a headache with what to watch.
However, the biggest game of the season has been allowed to happen this Wednesday due to Uefa doing a huge favour in return after the Premier League helped them.
City’s trip to Arsenal was originally scheduled for the weekend after Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8 and it was therefore postponed.
The Gunners’ fixture in the Europa League with PSV Eindhoven was also cancelled as a result.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
The City match was hastily put in the calendar for October 19 but this handed Uefa a major scheduling nightmare.
It gave the governing body no time to finish the Europa League group stages before the World Cup pause as there was no other available midweek remaining.
The Prem gave way and further delayed the highly anticipated match until after the tournament in Qatar to accommodate PSV’s trip to the Emirates Stadium, which ended in a 1-0 win to the Gunners.
This favour has clearly been appreciated by those in charge of the Champions League as there has been zero pushback from them regarding the setting of the game for this Wednesday.

Uefa normally frown upon league’s trying to get matches played while their elite competition takes place.
Arsenal against City kicks-off at 7:30pm and the European clashes begin half an hour later.
Despite much interest in the Round of 16 matches, many eyes will be on Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta’s sides.
A win for the current champions would take them above their closest challengers on goal difference, with just three points separating them. More

Five English managers will have taken charge of Champions League knockouts after this week as ex-Fulham boss joins elite

SCOTT PARKER is stunned by the trivia question I pose: “Can you name the only three Englishmen to have managed  in the Champions League knock-out stages?”The 42-year-old former Fulham chief is genuinely surprised that, when his Club Brugge side take on Benfica on Wednesday night, he will be joining such an exclusive group.

Graham Potter will also get his first taste of the last 16, taking the list of bosses to fiveCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Harry Redknapp with Tottenham, Frank Lampard at Chelsea, and Craig Shakespeare when he took over from Claudio Ranieri at Leicester, are the only English bosses to have competed at the sharp end of the world’s elite club competition.
On Wednesday, that number will swell to five, with Chelsea’s Graham Potter also making his debut in the last-16 away in Dortmund.
Parker was last seen in an English dugout when his Bournemouth side suffered a humiliating 9-0 defeat at Liverpool in August.
But in late December he took over the Belgian champions, who sacked his predecessor Carl Hoefkens  despite impressive Champions League wins over Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Porto.

Bournemouth’s then-owner Maxim Demin had dismissed Parker with a curt statement, following that Anfield drubbing, after the manager claimed his squad was ‘under-equipped’.
The former England captain and Footballer of the Year admits his sacking caused deep pain.
And he wants to challenge the widespread belief managers often have a ‘c’est la vie’ attitude to losing their jobs.
Parker said: “It was the first time that I had been given  the sack and it’s a tough position. The fear of failure is what drives me — the fear of not being successful, the fear of losing.

“When you are in a job and lose, I’m rational enough to understand why we may have lost and I have an opportunity on Monday morning to do something about it.
“When you get the sack, that opportunity is done and the  reality is you failed in someone’s eyes. The fact is you are no longer in a job that you devoted so much time to. For that to disappear is tough.
“I’m not one to accept how everyone sees football management. ‘Yeah, managers just get the sack’. I think that’s extremely harsh.
“Everyone seems to accept that if you don’t win two games you’re three games away from losing your job. That’s pretty normal now. I don’t think it should be like that.”
In his only two seasons in the Championship, Parker won promotion with both Fulham and Bournemouth — but on both occasions a lack of investment stymied him.
He said: “When you come out of the Championship and up into the Premier League the gap is absolutely humongous. You need to change a lot of things.
“So as quick as I’ve had success — two promotions in the two times I’ve been in the Championship, I’d say that’s pretty successful — the problem I’ve faced then is that leap from the Premier League maybe without huge investment.”
Frank Lampard soaked up the occasion while Chelsea bossCredit: PA
Craig Shakespeare managed in the knockouts with LeicesterCredit: PA:Press Association
When I suggest Parker wouldn’t have been sacked, four games after leading the Cherries to promotion, unless he had publicly criticised the club, his response is: “I don’t know . . .  we had Aston Villa, we won. We then had Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
“I don’t regret it (speaking out). I’m just someone that wants success. I’m highly committed. That’s why I get out of bed every morning, practically live here until the night, make the sacrifice of moving away, I want my football club to be successful.”
Parker’s intense nature means management provides only limited pleasure.
He admits: “The more experienced you get, the failures and losses last even longer.
“Early on in my career a win lasted a week, you’re on the crest of a wave but the scars, as you get cut along the way, start to dampen it.”
After 25 years as a player, coach and manager, Parker said he appreciated the ‘oxygen’ of spending more time with wife Carly and his four sons during his brief, enforced, break.
He turned down offers, believed to be from Championship clubs, but when Brugge came calling he knew it was the right job.
We meet at the club’s elite-level training base, after a frustrating run of draws have hampered his first six weeks in Belgium’s Jupiler League.
    Read More on The Sun
And Parker, whose side were held 1-1 at home by Union Saint-Gilloise on Friday, insists: “Managing in the Champions League is the pinnacle of the world we’re in but it wasn’t the main driver in coming here, although that will mean a lot, there’s a much bigger picture.
“I wanted to challenge myself in a different culture. I wanted the experience of coming abroad to a top club like this.” More
