Appearing on CBS Sports’ coverage of the Champions League this week, Carragher was asked if Messi had ever messaged him.
“Yes,” he replied. “Is it Spanish that they speak, Argentintians? I’m just going to say the word he called me, I don’t understand, a ‘burro’. What does that mean?”
Host Kate Abdo then pointed out the awkward translation as she revealed: “It means a ‘donkey’.”
“Donkey, thank you,” responded Carragher, who later explained his exchange in greater detail on Wednesday night.

“Well I think it came from this show actually,” he recalled. “I think we were critical of Paris Saint-Germain. Probably me.
“I said Paris Saint-Germain could not win the Champions League with Messi, Mbappe and Neymar playing together. I was proven right, again.
“A couple of weeks later, I was coming home from a game at Chelsea, I got a message and I was like ‘that can’t be him, must be one of these fake accounts’.
“Then I had a look and yeah, so it came from that and he told me his opinion.

“I had to then Google and do the translate thing because I didn’t have a clue what he’d sent to me.
“I just said ‘thanks for your opinion’, but the only trouble was the next night he was actually crowned the Ballon d’Or winner, so I replied to him saying ‘Congratulations’ and he saw the message and he didn’t reply.”
Carragher had previously revealed last year how Messi had called him a donkey on Instagram in response to his criticism of the forward’s PSG move.
Messi was unable to win the Champions League during his two years in Paris before joining Inter Miami in the MLS this summer.
Since arriving in the USA, the 36-year-old has scored 11 goals and added five assists in 11 appearances for his new club.

Asked by Abdo to elaborate, Carragher pressed on: “It’s probably hard to leave Madrid if I’m being totally honest.
“But at some stage you think if he’s the best player in England and one of England’s greatest ever players, which I think he will become, I think he’s going to sample the Premier League.

“And where better than Liverpool? The six-times Champions League winners.”

Rashford, 25, has started every match, managing one goal and a single assist.
It was his lack of effort defensively that upset Pearce last night.
Providing analysis for talkSPORT, the 61-year-old said that Rashford was running back “like he had a fridge on his back”.
He then took aim at Casemiro too, elaborating: “United are under the cosh because too many of their players have jacked it in.

The German giants scored a quickfire double either side of the half hour mark via Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry, with the first down to an Onana howler.
Rasmus Hojlund bagged his first United goal to haul them back into the game, only for Harry Kane and Mathys Tel efforts to kill off their challenge, either side of a late Casemiro double.
After the match, TNT Sports pundit Paul Scholes ripped into his old side’s “soft underbelly”.
He fumed: “There is a weakness to them. There is a soft underbelly and they do seem to collapse a bit when things are going wrong.
“They scored three goals and that is good, but I felt Bayern could then turn it on and score another.
“‘I thought there was a big distance between the teams, in that second half especially.
“First half I thought they did well but still conceded two goals through a lack of concentration.
“There is experience in the team but I don’t think it is being used. Concentration in Europe is so important, once you concede one goal, it can turn into two and three.

Gaffer needs to get squad firing
It must seem a tough period for Erik ten Hag in his Man Utd tenure.
Getting his side to bounce back and start showing their potential may be the toughest task of his time at Old Trafford so far.
Things are not going their way at the moment and it will need the manager to work with his squad to turn things around.
That starts with Burnley on the weekend.

Keeper fronts up media over mistake
Andre Onana gave an interview with the media after the game, despite his howler for the first goal.
It shows some mental strength from Onana to give an interview despite how dejected he was from his error.
The ex-Inter Milan stopper admitted that he was at fault in them getting nothing out of this game and that he will try to bounce back, feeling he still has a lot to prove.
Fans may be gutted right now but he has shown he is made of the right stuff to take that one on the chin and face up to his mistake.
    United have that losing feeling
Winning can become a habit, but so can losing.
Man Utd lost their fourth game of the season this evening and need to do something to address their poor form.
Ten Hag will have some work to do but it all starts again when they travel to Burnley on the weekend in the Premier League.
Kane gets first European goal for Bayern
It was always going to happen, Harry Kane on the scoresheet against the side who wanted to sign him.
Albeit from the penalty spot, it was a clinical spot-kick from the English striker.
He seemed to enjoy scoring against Man Utd.

The man, the myth, the legend
Joshua Kimmich was his usual brilliant self this evening.
The amount of ground he covers for his side is mind-bending.
He uses the ball so well, bringing attackers into play.

FT: Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd
It is a seven-goal thriller in the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich could have scored more however.
The German champions also struck the woodwork twice.

FT: Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd
What a bizarre game this has been tonight.
Just at the death, Fernandes whips in a free kick and Casemiro is there with a deft header to score.
Not enough time for them to think about getting that equaliser.
Bayern will be happy with the three points.

    89. The hosts are terrible in defence.
As Man Utd come forward, Casemiro steps on the ball and falls over.

They have looked vulnerable defensively but have more than made up for it going forward.

    73. Erik ten Hag needs to do something about their defending.
This is now three games in succession that they have conceded three goals.
Even when they have their full compliment of players available, they always look like you can get at them.

    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd

    71. Bayern are happy to keep the ball now and bide their time.
They have a lead to defend now, they know United have to chase the game not them.
Tuchel’s side will just look to pick them off on the break.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    69. Christian Eriksen is replaced by Scott McTominay.
It shows the lack of attacking options on the bench.
Must have been a tough choice not to bring on one of the three keepers, needing to get some goals.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    67. Man Utd have to commit more players forward.
As this is a group game, there is no second leg.
Erik ten Hag’s side need to try and get something out of this.
