AC Milan 0 Newcastle 0: Toon mark first Champions League match in 20 years with hard-fought point after dogged defending

A BOW down to the Pope is in order as nouveau riche Newcastle just about kept the Italian aristocrats at bay on their Champions League return.Toon’s Saudi owners have made no secret of their ruthless desire to become the world’s number one club by any means necessary.

Yet the upstarts look lightyears away from mixing it with the best based on this showing against European royalty AC Milan following 20 years in the wilderness.
The Magpies arrived late on Monday evening due to weather concerns, sat twiddling their thumbs on the runway at Newcastle airport for around two hours.
And they threatened to never show up after a sobering first-half where they were battered from pillar to post and thankful to keeper Nick Pope for a string of vital saves.
Toon were all over the shop and thankful to lady luck alone for Milan not being out of sight.

But while they barely threw a punch in anger on their Champions League return, mustering just one shot on target to AC’s 25 attempts, you take the point and leg it back to Tyneside.
Their qualification hopes will rest on what they can do at St James’ Park, so this has to go down as a brilliant result.
Yet AC Milan are not a great side, special in name only these days, and Newcastle could not lay a glove on them.
Eddie Howe had never been to a Champions League game before and he would have gone through the wringer here.

His side are just not clicking right now with this a continuation of their worrying Premier League form.
The midfield and attack are serious causes for concern, raising question marks over there summer recruitment.
But what has not been lost, and what they had in bucket loads in the San Siro when under the pump, was rock-solid resilience.
And they could have even nicked it right at the death to seal one of their most famous wins when Sean Longstaff’s stinger from the edge of the box was tipped over.
Howe made three changes after beating Brentford last weekend with winger Jacob Murphy, handed his first start of the season, the biggest surprise.
Sandro Tonali was back to face his boyhood club just 10 weeks after his £55million move from Milan while Alexander Isak was preferred to Callum Wilson up top.
This was their first trip to the San Siro since a 2-2 draw in 2003 when Alan Shearer bagged a brace.
The atmosphere was electric in the grand, crumbling old stadium.
The famous Curva Sud, all decked out in black, were making a hell of a racket while the travelling 4,500 Geordies were spread across behind the opposite goal up in the gods having spent all day sinking lager in the sunshine.
On paper there was little to fear for Newcastle. And 10 minutes in AC looked there for the taking, especially down their right.
Eddie Howe’s side managed to secure a clean sheet after withstanding heavy pressureCredit: Getty
Yet six minutes later and it looked like being the longest night imaginable with Nick Pope called into action FIVE times to keep the rampant hosts at bay.
Theo Hernandez really should have scored with a free header from a corner as Milan battered Toon’s goal.
The passing was off, there were gaping holes in midfield, and any half-opening was snuffed out by themselves.
And just when it looked like they had weathered a storm, Newcastle were ripped to shreds again.
Rafael Leao danced through an invisible defence before trying to get too cute with a backheel finish and hilariously falling over himself before Jacob Murphy cleared Tommasso’s Pobega’s effort off the line.
Yet, miraculously, the Mags were still in it at the break – despite Milan having 15 shots to their two.
Howe was being found out and he had to earn his corn at the break if his side were going to have a chance of escaping with a result.
And it was a much brighter, more proactive start to the second half. Far from brilliant yet they showed intent, found a bit of snarl and limited Milan to nothing up to the hour mark.
And as AC’s passes went astra there were plenty of groans from the locals, who were still smarting following their humiliating 5-1 defeat to rivals Inter last weekend.
Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson were brought on for Murphy and Anthony Gordon.
And you have to question why Murphy was picked for this humdinger. For all his honest work, there is a reason he had not started this season – and he did little to change that perception here.
Nick Pope was back in action straight after, getting down to his left to deny sub Tijjani Reijnders weak effort from a great position having done all the hard work.
Tonali was subbed with 19 minutes remaining and the local lad was afforded a standing ovation from all four corners.

Yet that was replaced by sheer frustration when Leao, with Milan’s best chance of the second half, nodded Alessandro Florenzi’s wicked cross over from the penalty spot.
Longstaff then nearly won it in the dying seconds with Newcastle’s first shot on target but this was a priceless point following two decades in the shadows.

The Champions League is back, if not with a bang but with a showing of defensive determination.
Newcastle’s return has been a long-time coming, and this hard-earned goalless draw in Milan is the least that their travelling supporters deserved. They wouldn’t have it any other h’way.
Thanks for joining us, and goodnight.
    Howe insists Newcastle can improve
Eddie Howe is adamant that his side can take the experience of being under the cosh at the San Siro for long periods into future Champions League games.
Speaking afterwards, the Newcastle head coach praised his players for their defensive capabilities when it mattered, and maintained there was plenty of encouragement to take into the rest of the competition.
We did not aim to defend so deep. Our defending was a bit loose, but around the game we defended the 18 yard box perfectly. We know we can grow and improve. We can be very positive about the next game.Eddie Howe

Grateful eight: Toon thankful to Pope
There’s no doubting who was Newcastle’s man of the match at the San Siro.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope made a string of fine saves throughout to hit back at his recent critics.

Despite their 25 attempts at goal, it’s been another frustrating evening for the AC Milan faithful.
Having seen their side hit for five by city rivals Inter at the weekend, they have now had to endure another goalless 90 minutes of Champions League football.
The Rossoneri have failed to score in their last three games in Europe’s stellar competition, a run of 352 minutes without a goal.
And it’s four Champions League fixtures without a victory too, their longest winless streak in the competition since seven games between December 2013 and November 2021.

Off the mark in Group F
Group F has been dubbed the group of death in this season’s Champions League, and so any away point must be seen as a positive.
Whether the Toon can remain in the top two ahead of matchday two depends on what happens in the French capital, where Paris Saint-Germain are about to take on Borussia Dortmund.

Match stats from the San Siro
AC Milan’s 25 shots in this game is their highest in a single Champions League match without scoring since 27 against PSV Eindhoven in October 2005.

Full time – AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
Newcastle’s Champions League campaign begins with a hard-fought point away at AC Milan.
The Serie A giants were the better team throughout, but were unable to find either their composure in front of goal or a way past Nick Pope.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
90+5. Newcastle win the ball back in the final seconds and burst forward!
Almiron feeds Barnes, who lays back to Anderson. The substitute bides his time and then plays in Guimaraes, who strikes goalwards…
…with a shot that touches the fingertips of Sportiello and flies over!
What a smash and grab that would have been!
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
90+3. An absolutely brilliant tackle from Trippier stops Musah in his tracks along the touchline.
Somehow the Newcastle captain not only wins the ball back but keeps it in play too. Bravo!
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – Newcastle substitution
90+1. Eddie Howe makes his final change with Harvey Barnes on for Alexander Isak.
The Toon are on the verge of a well-earned draw.
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – Krunic yellow card
    90. Krunic reacts angrily to being fouled by Anderson, and becomes the latest AC Milan player to be yellow carded.
Meanwhile, the fourth official signals that there will be five minutes of additional time to be played.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    89. AC Milan continue to pass up opportunities.
Leao fluffs his shot (not for the first time tonight), Pulisic has an attempt blocked, and then Giroud thunders an effort straight at Pope.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    87. Isak gives up possession up twice in quick succession, and requires Burn to help him out with a thumping header clear.
The visitors have their own problems without their own players adding to them.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    85. Five minutes remain at the San Siro, and Newcastle have dropped back with ten men behind the ball.
AC Milan continue to work the ball, eventually playing Florenzi in on the right, but his cross is confidently claimed by Pope.
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – Giroud yellow card
    83. Now Olivier Giroud talks his way into Jose Maria Sanchez’s book.
The striker is unhappy at being penalised for a challenge on Longstaff and says a little too much to the referee.
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – Musah yellow card
    82. Bruno Guimaraes tempts Yunus Musah into a foul that not only earns the substitute a yellow card, but brings Newcastle a much-needed free-kick on halfway.
That was some good old English gamesmanship from the Brazilian playmaker.
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – AC Milan substitution
    80. The Rossoneri goalkeeper is unable to carry on so he will be replaced by Marco Sportiello.
How much of a blow will that be to Stefano Pioli’s charges?
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    78. All the action is inside the Newcastle penalty area at the moment, but in the other box Mike Maignan has gone down and appears in some discomfort.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    77. Florenzi has found some joy down the right since his introduction, and he floats in another dangerous cross towards the back post.
Between them, Botman and Trippier manage to snuff out Hernandez from adding the finishing touch.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    75. Milan are bombarding the Newcastle goal once again.
A vital interception from Almiron is required to take the ball away from Hernandez inside the penalty, and then the resulting corner causes chaos.
Amid the mayhem, Pulisic and Hernandez both have fierce shots blocked by Trippier and Longstaff respectively.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    74. Leao flashes a header over the crossbar!
Pulisic whips in the best chance off the half right on to the forehead of the Portuguese forward, who is unable to keep it down and underneath Nick Pope’s crossbar.
AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – Newcastle substitution
    72. And here’s another youngster, Newcastle’s Elliot Anderson.
The midfielder is on for Sandro Tonali, who departs the pitch to a standing ovation from all inside the San Siro.
From the AC Milan fans, it’s a thank you for all he has done. From the Newcastle supporters, it will be as an appreciation for what’s still to come.

AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle – AC Milan substitution
    71. Unsurprisingly, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is unable to continue.
On in his place is young Yunus Musah.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    69. Loftus-Cheek has pulled up holding his hamstring, and it interrupts an AC Milan counter attack.
Hernandez spots the former Chelsea player unmarked as he burst through the middle and goes to play him the ball until noticing his injury.
In the confusion, the defender loses possession.
    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle
    67. Reijnders has floated into good positions on two occasions since his arrival, but his performance on the ball both time has left plenty to be desired.
Having struck a weak shot at Pope moments ago, he now wastes a cross with options available.

Fans spot Newcastle have been forced to make major change to kit due to little known Uefa Champions League rule

NEWCASTLE were forced to change their kit for their Champions League opener against AC Milan due to a little-known Uefa rule.Eddie Howe led his side out in Europe’s elite competition for the first time in 20 years at the San Siro on Tuesday night as they earned a hard-fought goalless draw.

But the black and white stripes that usually stretch down the back of the shirt – through the players numbers – were removed to adhere with the competition’s guidelines.
Uefa’s rules state “the area on the back of a playing shirt [is] reserved exclusively for the shirt number” and that the number zone “must extend 2cm above the highest point and 3cm below the lowest point of the two digits, and horizontally 3cm from the left edge of the left-hand digit and 3cm from the right edge of the right-hand digit”.
The zone also has to be “free of any team, manufacturer or other identification or advertising”.
And those on social media could instantly see something about Newcastle’s kit had been changed.

And that’s because those around in 2002-03 – the last season that Newcastle played in the Champions League – will recall that nothing is settled on matchday one.
Back then, the Toon last their opening three fixtures in Group E yet still recovered to qualify for the second group stage (yes, that’s right, kids).
The epic comeback that saw them beat Juventus, Dynamo Kyiv and Feyenoord meant they became the first ever club to lose their opening three Champions League group matches yet still progress to the next round.
Only Atalanta in 2019-20 have repeated the feat since.
    Bookies unable to split sides
Newcastle are back in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, but the bookmakers are undecided as to whether they will begin their group campaign with a win, chalking them up at the exact same price as AC Milan. The draw is the outsider of the three outcomes.

    AC Milan win 17/10
    Draw 21/10
    Newcastle win 17/10

Odds from Paddy Power correct at time of post publication.
    Another Italian job for Toon
Newcastle United arrive in Milan this evening hoping to create more Italian memories for their fans.
The Toon won their last European away game against Serie A opposition, beating Palermo 1-0 in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup.
Alberto Luque scored the only goal, although that was as good as it got for the £9m striker during his time at St James’ Park.
But the Spaniard has his place in Newcastle history; until that point, the Magpies had failed to win any of their first four visits to Italy (D2 L2).

    What have the managers said?
“We always live in hope that if we produce our best performance, we can beat anybody,” Howe said over the weekend.
“I do believe that. Bringing that A-game, bringing that to the table at the very highest level, isn’t easy but I back the players and I know if we can reach that level, we can be a match for any team.”
Meanwhile, Pioli added: “We had a lot of faith and positivity for the derby but it didn’t go well, there’s no point hiding it.
“It was a big disappointment, but we have the Champions League and that is good as it’s the only way to switch.”

What is the early team news?
Newcastle will still have to do without influential midfielder Joe Willock on Tuesday night.
The 24-year-old has been struggling with an Achilles issue and isn’t expected back until next month at the earliest.
Howe is also set to be without Joelinton for his first Champions League match as a manager, while Emil Krafth is a long-term absentee.
Defender Pierre Kalulu missed Saturday’s collapse against Inter for AC Milan and is set to be out once again against the Toon.
His centre-back partner Fikayo Tomori will return, however, having been ruled out of the Inter clash by suspension.
Midfielder Ismael Bennacer is a long-term absentee having undergone knee surgery in May.
    Super Sandro
It will be a big night for Sandro Tonali, meanwhile, with the midfielder making a quick return to the club he left for Newcastle in the summer.
The midfielder has already grabbed his first goal for the Toon, while he has also created three chances and made four tackles.

    Ruthless Rafael
AC Milan will be hoping that Rafael Leao can be the star of the show when Newcastle come to town on Tuesday night.
The Portuguese livewire has already grabbed two goals and an assist in four games this term – while creating seven chances.

Welcome to AC Milan vs Newcastle

Magpies fans will have the hairs standing up on the backs of their necks as the Champions League’s iconic anthem is blasted out as the sun sets around Milan.
And they’ll have water on their stomachs too after fans were spotted sliding through the Milan streets.
While Newcastle are new to this level, Milan have been steadily improving in Europe under Stefano Pioli.
Last season they were able to escape a group featuring Chelsea, Red Bull Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb.
They subsequently managed to make it all the way to the semi-finals, toppling Tottenham in North London and Italian champions-elect Napoli on their way.
This is bound to be an extremely competitive group, with Paris Saint-Germain hosting Borussia Dortmund across Europe in its other match on Tuesday night.
So every game really matters, and Newcastle will be desperate to come away from Milan with something.
Stay tuned as coming up is all the latest news and team selection before the big kick-off at 5:45pm BST.

Terrifying world of AC Milan’s ‘Ultras Warriors’ who pledge to ‘cheer, scream & fight’ for club as Newcastle fan stabbed

THOUSANDS of Newcastle fans have descended on Milan ahead of the club’s Champions League Clash on Tuesday. But there is more concern surrounding the drama that could unfold off the pitch as supporters of the Magpies face off with AC Milan’s diehard admirers.

The uber-organised Ultras Warriors vow to “cheer, incite, scream and fight” for their club, apparently without fear of the consequences.
Despite their burning passion for football being at the forefront of their mission, flying fists, flares and anarchy often take centre stage.
A Newcastle fan has already been ambushed and stabbed by at least seven masked thugs ahead of the game in the Italian city.
The horror incident involving Brit dad Eddie McKay, 58, has incited fears that more blood could be shed in football-related incidents.

A new generation of fans, formed out of the infamous Fossa dei Leoni (Lion’s Den) association, are now carrying the torch for their beloved club.
But their penchant for violence, political disruption and fierce rivalries remains at the heart of the group.
The Fossa dei Leoni, originally formed in 1968, is credited with pioneering the modern ultra movement in Italy.
The group offered unwavering support to their club and belted out lyrics ridden with loyalty from Ramp 18 in the San Siro Stadium.

They later dominated the Curva Sud, becoming the heartbeat of the Diavolo support while joining up with members of the Brigate Rossonere and the Commandos Tigre.
But the infusion of supporters was notoriously strained due to differing political ideologies, sparking a series of explosive rifts.
Fossa eventually disbanded in 2005 following a bizarre row over a stolen banner during a match between Milan and Juventus.
The firm supposedly managed to steal a flag from an ultra group supporting their rivals, known as Viking, and unfurled it triumphantly in the Curva Sud.
But it later emerged that rather than swiping the flag, it had been acquired “without honour” – going against Fossa’s unwritten rules.
Juventus fans later sought revenge and nabbed one of the group’s banners, before tauntingly posting it on the Viking’s fanzine.
Both banners were eventually returned to their rightful owners, but rumours that police were involved in the truce began to circulate.
This would be regarded as another deadly sin – and the dissolution of Fossa did little to quell the speculation, or put an end to the infighting.
A bloody battle ensued, reportedly exacerbated by a merchandising and tickets row, resulting in one Milan fan being shot in the legs.
Brigate Rossonere and Commandos Tigre lived on, while former Fossa members rebranded as the Ultras Warriors.
Announcing their formation, the group said they were “born from the synergy of some militants of the former Fossa dei Leoni”.
A press release read: “The new Warriors who, in serenity and agreement with the rest of the groups of the curve; we will fill the void left both in the south and in our hearts.
“Like the majority of Italian fans, we are not characterized by any political ideology, neither red nor black, but only and exclusively red and black.
“We are an independent group and our only purpose is to cheer, incite, scream, fight… for one cause only… our Magical Milan.”
The apolitical group is reportedly headed by Luca Lucci, who is currently serving a seven-year stretch for drug trafficking charges.
The background of their alleged leader has raised fears the Ultras Warriors are now more of a mafia than a gang of football fans.
Italian media claim Lucci was heard discussing the killing of the legendary head of the Inter Milan Ultras, Vittorio Boiocchi.
The 69-year-old, who spent 26 years behind bars, was shot dead outside of his house on the outskirts of Milan in October last year.
According to Calcio Mercato, Lucci warned a crime boss: “Boiocchi? You have to kill him, Vittorio is crazy, he’ll kill you. You have to throw him down.”
With rigorous weekly meetings, the cult-like supporters of AC Milan remain a structured and scary presence.
Members of the Ultras Warriors are expected to line the stands of San Siro as they watch their club take on Newcastle.
The Toon’s return to the Champions League after 20 years is predicted to be explosive both on and off the pitch.
In crazy scenes, Brits have already been seen sliding topless in the slippery streets of Milan with dozens watching on.
Magpies fans had to scramble to bag one of the 4,300 seats dedicated to the visiting team and they’ve long been sold out.

But other loyal supporters have still rushed to the city without a ticket.
The last time the team played away from home in this competition was also in Milan back in 2003, where 12,000 visiting fans watched 2-2 draw with Inter.

The two stars returned to full training today after recovering from their respective injuries.
Mount has missed United’s last three games due to an unspecified muscular issue, while Varane has missed the last two.

Man Utd face the Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena.
The Red Devils will look to avoid slipping to a third successive defeat across all competitions.

However, they will have to do so with a severely depleted squad.
Just five defenders – including free signing Jonny Evans – will travel to Germany, along with four goalkeepers.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffered a hamstring injury during his five-minute cameo against Brighton on Saturday.
His absence leaves Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Sergio Reguilon, and Diogo Dalot as the club’s only other defensive options for Wednesday’s game.

United also have seven midfielders and five attackers available.
Maguire is unavailable due to an injury, which has not been specified.
The centre-back has not started a match for Man Utd this season.
His only appearance so far came during the club’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal before the international break.
Maguire then received heavy criticism from fans while on England duty earlier this month.
Erik ten Hag has since stepped in to defend him, saying: “I have said many times, it is disrespectful and he doesn’t deserve it.
“He is a great player and gives great performances. It’s crazy but it’s how it works and Harry has to block this by performances.
“It’s unjustified when you see his career. It’s a great career and it has a lot to come but he has to block it by good performances.”
Fans had also hoped that summer signing Sofyan Amrabat would make his debut against Bayern Munich, but the midfielder is yet to take part in full training.
The midfielder trained by himself earlier today in order to build up his fitness following a back injury.
Despite Man Utd’s lack of depth, Harry Kane has urged his Bayern team-mates not to underestimate Ten Hag’s side.
The former Tottenham striker told Sports Illustrated: “A difficult game. I know Manchester United are having a difficult moment at the moment, but sometimes teams like that are dangerous because they’re always looking to come back in a big way.

“So we have to be prepared for them and of course we want to get the crowd behind us as early as possible on Wednesday in front of our home crowd and approach the game with a lot of intensity.
“The Champions League is always special and my first game with Bayern Munich will stay with me – so I hope it goes well.” More
