Henry and Richards in shock after finding out Carragher’s ranking at 2005 Ballon d’Or awards

THIERRY HENRY and Micah Richards were left in shock by Jamie Carragher’s ranking in the 2005 Ballon d’Or.The popular trio reunited for Champions League punditry duty for CBS on Wednesday.

And they got up to their usual hilarious antics ahead of the action.
That included a discussion about the Ballon d’Or as they had the famous trophy in the studio.
Erling Haaland is at risk of missing out on the prestigious gong despite his sensational antics in Manchester City’s Treble-winning season.
But should the Norwegian striker get pipped, likely by Argentina’s World Cup hero Lionel Messi, then he would certainly have some sympathy from Carragher.

That is because the former England defender was snubbed for the 2005 Ballon d’Or – despite helping Liverpool win the Champions League in dramatic fashion in Istanbul.
    Carragher finished joint-20th – alongside a fresh-faced 20-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.
CBS presenter Kate Abdo said: “Do you know who we should also give some credit to for how close they came in 2005 as the man who came joint-20th with Cristiano Ronaldo? Who was it?”
Richards jumped in: “Do not say Carra.”

The studio then erupted into delirium as the standings were revealed – with Carragher of Liverpool and England then Ronaldo both 20th behind Zinedine Zidane in 18th and Gianluigi Buffon in 19th.
Carragher banged the table with his hands and shouted: “I’m above Ronaldo! Hahaha! And this fella said I can’t touch it [the trophy].”
Henry replied: “Oh my gosh. Zizou 18th and you 20th. That’s it, we’re dead.”
Richards – who ripped his trousers live on air – asked: “I can’t believe that. Who did you pay for that? I can’t.”
Carragher then demanded the CBS social media team post the clip online immediately to spread the result far and wide.
And fans watching on at home were in hysterics at the brilliant piece of TV.

Celtic 2 Atletico Madrid 2: Kyogo & Palma strike as Hoops pick up Champions League point but denied famous win by Morata

THIS time the only shame was that the game had to end.Celtic and Atletico now have a European tie they can both be proud of.

Half a century on from an infamous clash memorable for sheer brutality, this was a night when the football on show left its mark.
It was just unfortunate for Brendan Rodgers’ side that their performance didn’t make the dent they hoped for on Group E.
The Spanish side did have a man sent off and it ended in a draw like it did in 1974.
But some 50 years on and there was no outrage or fisticuffs in the tunnel. Just respect.

Celtic couldn’t have dreamed of a better start with Kyogo firing them ahead inside four minutes.
But Atletico hit back through Antoine Griezmann.
Luis Palma then put Rodgers team ahead again before Alvaro Morata levelled early in the second half.
It was just a thrilling end to end European clash you couldn’t take your eyes off for a split second.
    Most read in Football
The backdrop to all of this was a defiant show of support to Palestine by thousands of Celtic supporters.
The club urged their fans not to politicise this European match for fear of UEFA sanctions.
But their appeal fell on deaf ears.
There was simply no stopping them.
Once the game got going it was the same for Rodgers’ side as they stormed into an early lead.
Kyogo scored the opening goal against Lazio when he combined brilliantly with the Matt O’Riley.
Here the pair linked up again to stun the Spanish.
O’Riley is enjoying such a rich vein of form right now that he’s clearly oozing confidence.
His one-touch pass into Kyogo’s feet was sensational with the little striker cleverly dinking his finish beyond goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
It was such a dream start for Scotland’s champions.
From that joy, thought, soon came tears.

Reo Hatate was distraught just moments later when a pulled hamstring meant his night was cruelly over.
It’s an injury he’s had before and his pain and frustration was written all over his face.
Paulo Bernardo came on as Hatate’s replacement with the on-loan Benfica midfielder given an unexpected opportunity to show he belongs at this level.
It was asking a lot with the start of the game so fast and frantic.
And it just didn’t let up.
Atletico made it 1-1 after being awarded a penalty with 23 minutes on the clock.
Greg Taylor felt harshly treated when the German ref ruled Nahuel Molina had been clipped inside the box. But in truth the Scotland defender really could have little complaint.
Joe Hart was the one who was really unfortunate.
He threw himself low to his left to make a magnificent save to keep out Griezmann’s spot-kick.
But the ball came right back to the fabulous Frenchman who made no mistake with his second attempt.
Celtic could have let their heads drop there and then.
Atletico had a spell where they really looked the part.
But there was a resilience to Rodgers’ side which saw them handle that set-back and shrug it off.
Palma’s goal to make it 2-1 came just three minutes after the visitors drew level.
And what a strike it was.

Daizen Maeda had switched wings to the left and he did tremendously well to fire a ball into the box.
Belgian star Axel Witsel tripped over his own feet and fell over.
But while Palma still had so much to do to beat the goalkeeper he drilled a shot which beat Oblak all hands up.
The home support went wild again with the noise deafening.
It was turning into an incredible game of football with two top teams giving it everything they had.
The ref was standing for no nonsense either, booking three Atletico players Rodrigo De Paul, Javier Galan and Molina before the interval.
Before then there were other chances at both ends.
In 35 minutes O’Riley came close to volleying a third for Celtic but the keeper made a save this time.
Celtic themselves breathed a huge sigh of relief when the flag went up to disallow an Atletico goal for off-side.
The big question was whether Rodgers’ side could maintain their level of performance for the second half having put so much into the first period.
By 53 minutes it was beginning to look like they wouldn’t.
Atletico made it 2-2 when half-time sub Marcos Llorente crossed from the right to set up Morata to score.
The Spain star – who scored against Scotland in Seville – stooped at the back post to guide an improvised header past Hart.
With so much time left to play it seemed highly unlikely the scoring was going to end there.
The longer the second half wore on the more weary Celtic looked.
On the hour mark Rodgers decided to try something new in a bid to turn things Celtic’s way.
Winger Palma was subbed with centre-half Nat Phillips thrown on as the home side switched to a back three.
But the tiredness in the men in green and white was there for all to see.
Atletico almost won it in 75 minutes, sub Angel Correa turning on a sixpence inside the box and smashing a shot Hart blocked with his legs.
With eight minutes left to play, though, and a red card gave Celtic fresh hope.
De Paul – booked in the first-half – swiped down O’Riley with a lazy challenge in the middle of the park to be sent off.
Suddenly Rodgers’ side had an extra man for the closing stages as the home support urged them to push for a winner.

Newcastle 0 Dortmund 1: Champions League group of death turned on its head as Toon struggle at home and hit by injuries

ON A filthy old Tyneside night, Newcastle’s Champions League ambitions were doused by the cold shower of reality.  While the filthy-rich Geordies may have all the money in Saudi Arabia to chuck at Europe’s elite club competition, here was proof of their status as novices at the top table.

Eddie Howe’s side were undone by one who got away from them in the transfer market – midfielder Felix Nmecha, heavily linked with a move to St James Park in the summer, but who opted to leave Wolfsburg for Borussia Dortmund instead.
Nmecha’s strike, just before half-time, capped a thrusting move started by Nico Schlotterbeck, and left this group intriguingly poised with these two sides level on points ahead of a return match at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday week.
Boss Howe was given the royal seal of approval from ‘King’ Kevin Keegan when the duo met at the theatre on Monday night – now he has to achieve what Keegan failed to do and win a trophy at this club.
Keegan, still a hopeless dreamer in his dotage, had raised the prospect of Newcastle winning the Champions League this season.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
But it rarely works like that and Howe, a more grounded individual than his famous forebear, realises as much.
Manchester City had to wait a generation to get their hands on the famous big-eared trophy and Paris Saint-Germain – sploshed 4-1 here three weeks ago – are still waiting despite all of their Middle Eastern oil wonga.
That oil-firm derby had been played in a carnival atmosphere when St James’ Park welcomed back Champions League football after a 20-year absence.
Here the locals were again in fine voice but their side lacked the nous to unlock the seasoned European veterans of Dortmund.

Nick Pope had made a stunning double-save early on but sub Callum Wilson twice went close to a second-half equaliser after Alexander Isak had been forced off through injury.
Howe named the same starting eleven who had trounced PSG for the visit of Dortmund, who arrived unbeaten in the Bundesliga but bottom of this group.
Group F consists of a PSG side shorn of Lionel Messi and Neymar, a Dortmund team with a Jude Bellingham-sized hole in it, and an AC Milan side which is far from vintage.
But it is still living up to its ‘Group of Death’ billing and the Geordies will now need a result or two in Dortmund and Paris before they return here to face AC Milan in December.
Sandro Tonali – facing a lengthy ban for breaking betting rules but lauded here by the club’s dizzy supporters after Saturday’s hammering of Crystal Palace – was left on the bench for the opening hour.
Inside the first two minutes, both keepers were tested – Pope saving with his feet to deny Donyell Malen and Gregor Kobel pushing away a curling shot from Anthony Gordon.
And soon, Pope was pulling off an extraordinary double save, hurling himself one way, then the other to thwart Malen and Niclas Fullkrug.

Alexander Isak had to go off injured in the first halfCredit: Getty

It is remarkable that Pope is currently being frozen out of the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
Still, from the resulting corner, Newcastle broke swiftly, Isak feeding Gordon, whose shot was blocked by Kobel at his near post.
It came at a cost though, Isak was injured by a tackle from behind as he made the pass.
Dortmund were a far more organised and threatening team than PSG had been, they frequently had the Toon back-pedalling and forced a string of corners.
But Bruno Guimaraes, who looks born to this Champions League manner, pinged a lofted pass to Miguel Almiron, who tripped over his own feet as he attempted a shot.
Almiron had gone down moments earlier, and the Geordies appealed long and hard for a penalty against Schlotterbeck but Portuguese ref Artur Dias was having none of it.
Gordon was becoming a real menace and the locals – happy as otters in the torrential rain – were celebrating with delirium every time their team won a corner.

Dortmund’s former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can had just hobbled off not long before the Germans seized the lead on 45 minutes.
Schlotterbeck won a crunching tackle in his own half and the Germany centre-back hurtled forward to play a perfectly-weighted pass to Nmecha, who fizzed home his shot.
Here was confirmation of what we’d suspected a few weeks ago – that PSG had been as bad as Newcastle had been good – and that Howe’s team would face sterner tests.
After the break, there was a full-throated response from the Toon Army, which seemed to inspire their boys.
Fabian Schar won a resounding tackle which turned into a pass for Wilson, who exchanged passes with Gordon, but had his shot saved by Kobel, sticking out a foot from point-blank territory.
Jacob Murphy was forced off by injury almost as soon as he’d arrived as a sub.

But as Newcastle staged a late rally, Matt Targett whipped in a free-kick from the left and Wilson connected with his shoulder and saw his effort crash against the crossbar.
And in the dying moments Gordon’s shot cannoned off the turf and on to the bar, as the hosts finished with a flourish which ultimately came to nothing.
