Man Utd ratings: Garnacho gives Bayern defenders a scare but Antony performed like a no-trick pony once again

MANCHESTER UNITED limped out of the Champions League on a night of familiar problems for boss Erik ten Hag.Harry Kane brilliantly teed up Kingsley Coman’s Bayern Munich winner on 70 minutes as the Red Devils finished bottom of their group.

United needed to beat the German champions and hope Copenhagen drew with Galatasaray.
But the Red Devils never did enough to make their side of the bargain look realistic.
And once more Ten Hag’s men lacked creativity.
Again too they suffered injury problems, losing England defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw just before the break.

But Copenhagen went through with a 1-0 win in the other Group A match – while United’s days as a European superpower look further in the past than ever as their far-fetched dream petered out.
Here’s how United rated, player by player, in their tame old Trafford exit.

    Raphael Varane – 7
Hadn’t started since Copenhagen in October but if he’s got a problem with Erik ten Hag it didn’t show.
    Luke Shaw – 6
Excellent covering, determined tackling and passing – had a good thing going with Garnacho up ahead but forced off at the break.
    Scott McTominay – 5
Put in plenty of hard yards but only because he was given the runaround by more sophisticated opponents.

Sergio Ramos scores panenka penalty, gets booked for kicking keeper then shushes crowd as fans say ‘100% on brand’

SERGIO RAMOS produced a “100 per cent on brand” moment as Sevilla crashed out of Europe. The Spanish side were knocked out of the Champions League in their final group match against Lens on Tuesday night.

Their exit was not without incident, though, with Ramos at the centre of the action at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Ramos scored a panenka penalty before being booked for kicking Lens goalkeeper Brice Samba.
He then completed the moment of madness by shushing the crowd and cupping his ear as he jogged back to his own half.
Samba had initially denied Ramos from 12 yards, only for a retake to be ordered due to the keeper stepping off his line.

After Ramos chipped the ball into the roof off the net, the pair clashed as the veteran defender scrambled to grab the ball.
With Samba rolling around on the floor, referee Felix Zwayer was left with no choice but to show Ramos the 250th yellow card of his club career.
Reacting to the Spaniard’s antics on social media, one fan wrote: “That was 100% on brand.”
Another joked: “Violence is his trademark.”

A third supporter also added: “What a man.”
Meanwhile, one more simply commented a goat emoji underneath a clip of the incident.
Ramos’ goal, which pulled Sevilla level and broke a Champions League record for most goals by a defender with 17, was not enough to see them into the Europa League in third place.
His side had needed to win to secure a place in the play-off round and avoid an early European exit.
However, with Sevilla pushing forward in search of a winner, Lens scored in the 96th minute through Angelo Fulgini to condemn their opponents to last place.
The result means Sevilla will be not play in Europe after Christmas for the first time in 11 years. More

‘Cursed’ Man Utd hit with TWO more injuries as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw forced off before second-half vs Bayern

MANCHESTER UNITED have been hit with another injury blow after Harry Maguire limped off against Bayern Munich. The defender was forced off with an injury during the first half of the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Maguire received treatment on the pitch before attempting to continue.
However, his issue proved too much as Erik ten Hag was forced into an early change.
The England international received a standing ovation from the crowd as he was replaced by Jonny Evans.
Reacting on social media, one fan wrote: “Varane is back to the starting line up and Maguire is now injured? Who put a curse on us?!”

Meanwhile, another added: “Maguire injured now… The curse on this club is real.”
United already have seven players sidelined through injury, including defender Lisandro Martinez.
Luke Shaw was also withdrawn at half-time after the commentary team had picked up on a potential hamstring problem in the first half.
Shaw has already missed three months through injury this season, only returning to action in recent weeks.

The injury comes as a setback for Maguire after his recent resurgence for the Red Devils.
He has been a rare positive for United since returning to the side in October.
His performances were recognised last week as he was named Premier League player of the month for November following three clean sheets in a trio of victories.
The injury to Maguire was an unwanted blow to United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.
Ten Hag’s side needed to beat Bayern and hope the other match in the group between Copenhagen and Galatasaray ends in a draw to progress.
However, the 1-0 loss and Copenhagen’s victory by the same scoreline sent them out of Europe entirely. More

Brawl breaks out between Man Utd and Bayern Munich stars after Garnacho ‘slams Coman into advertising hoardings’

However, players from both teams squared up after a “naughty incident” on 24 minutes.
Alejandro Garnacho was attempting to get past Bayern’s Kingsley Coman when he ended up knocking him heavily into the pitchside hoardings.
The pair got in a tangle before the Man Utd player accidentally ending up throwing his Bayern counterpart into the boards.
The French star’s team-mates raced over to square up to Garnacho, who soon had his own colleagues backing him up.

Fortunately, Coman escaped the incident unscathed as the referee got in the middle of the melee and eventually continued with the game without punishment.
But not everybody was as convinced as the official that nothing sinister had occurred.
Ex-Chelsea and Blackburn striker Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think Garnacho is a bit naughty there.”
And it seems that some viewers tuning in also thought the same.

While another said: “Garnacho just chucking Coman into the advertising boards, you know that didn’t feel good.”

Arsenal ratings: Nketiah looks sharp as he nabs first Champions League goal but Cedric fails to make most of rare start

ARSENAL were held to a 1-1 draw by PSV Eindhoven in their final Champions League group stage game. With the Gunners already qualified for the knockout stages, Mikel Arteta made several changes ahead of the match.

Cedric Soares and Mohamed Elneny both made a rare start, as did Reiss Nelson and Jakub Kiwior.
After a slow start, Eddie Nketiah broke the deadlock with a composed strike to give Arsenal the lead.
However, PSV equalised in the second half through Yorbe Vertessen.
In a game with little consequence for the Gunners, SunSport’s Emillia Hawkins rates the performance.
    Aaron Ramsdale – 7
The goalkeeper has understandably been low in confidence in recent months, but he was on form this evening.
He made some excellent saves and couldn’t have done anything to stop PSV’s goal.
Aaron Ramsdale made some great savesCredit: Getty
    Cedric Soares – 5
He hasn’t started for the Gunners in a while, but Cedric didn’t look too out of place in the first half.
The defender lost the ball on the odd occasion, but he also attempted some great passes and important blocks.
    Most read in Champions League
However, he was arguably at fault for PSV’s equaliser after failing to track back in time to stop Yorbe Vertessen.
    William Saliba – 6
He managed to get back to make a heroic last-ditch tackle and keep the score at 0-0 early in the game with the help of Gabriel.
However, his mis-timed attempt at a block led to PSV’s opener.
    Gabriel Magalhaes – 6
He made a crucial block in the eighth minute to keep Ricardo Pepi’s close-range strike at bay.
But he had Arsenal fans on edge just 10 minutes later after mis-timing a block which almost led to an opening goal for PSV.
    Jakub Kiwior – 5
The defender had a quiet game out on the left and gave away a silly free kick on the edge of the box in the second half after a miscommunication with Jorginho.
He also struggled to handle Johan Bakayoko at times.
Kiwior almost scored a winner with his final kick of the game, but he fired his effort wide.
Jakub Kiwior struggled at timesCredit: AFP
    Jorginho – 6
The Arsenal captain of the evening put on a composed performance but made the odd error in midfield.
    Mohamed Elneny – 6
He appeared very shaky in the early stages, losing the ball on two occasions in the opening five minutes.
However, he grew into the game and put on a composed display in midfield, even hitting the post after making a positive run in the first half.
    Kai Havertz – 6
The midfielder has massively grown in confidence in recent weeks, but this wasn’t his best display.
He lacked ideas when breaking forward and sometimes slowed down the attack.
    Leandro Trossard – 5
Far from his best performance, Trossard struggled to create any real goalscoring opportunities.
He also gave the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions.
    Eddie Nketiah – 7
After a slow start, Nketiah popped up at the perfect moment to score his first Champions League goal just before half time.
It was a brilliant finish straight into the bottom-right corner, leaving goalkeeper Walter Benítez with no chance of making the save.

    Reiss Nelson – 6
An impressive performance from the winger. He worked his socks off throughout and was able to win the ball in dangerous areas to break up play.
Nelson also got the assist for Nketiah’s opening goal with a great pass.
    Substitutes
    Martin Odegard (for Elneny, 62) – 6
Added a bit more creativity to the Arsenal midfield when he came on.
    Declan Rice (for Cedric, 62) – 6

He certainly appears to be much more effective when playing in midfield.

    That’s all from Eindhoven
And so ends the group stage.
It may not have been a memorable conclusion to the first step of Arsenal’s return to the Champions League after six years away, but it’s certainly been an impressive continental campaign for the Gunners.
Winners with a game to spare, the Londoners were able to make wholesale changes for tonight, and still emerged from the Netherlands unscathd.
Focus will now turn back to the Premier League, and then – in the new year – Mikel Arteta’s men can show us just how far they can really go in Europe’s top competition.
Until then, thanks for reading and goodnight.

    Arteta pleased with Rice experiment
Eyebrows were raised when Mikel Arteta brought Declan Rice on as a second half, and they stayed raised when the former West Ham man slotted in at centre-back in replace of William Saliba.
Yet Rice was as composed as ever in the role, and afterwards the Arsenal boss explained his reason for the move.
We are very short at the back so I wanted to see if something happened how we are going to resolve that situation. I thought he was really good.Mikel Arteta

    Gunners stake their claim
Mikel Arteta insisted that tonight was an opportunity for some of his fringe players to show they deserve a run in the first team, but who impressed most?

How they finish in Group B
Confirmation of Arsenal and PSV’s respective first and second finishes in Group B, but it’s Lens who happily drop into the Europa League following their last-minute win against Sevilla in France.

Match stats from the Philips Stadion
I can’t believe the referee didn’t play another 15 seconds so Arsenal could clock up 500 successful passes. This is a bigger travesty than any VAR nonsense.

Full time – PSV 1-1 Arsenal
It ends all square in Eindhoven.
A dead rubber, yes, but two dead good goals.
Eddie Nketiah’s exquisite first half finish was cancelled out shortly after the restart by an excellent Yorbe Vertessen strike.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
90+7. Trossard to win it! Trossard must win it! Saved!
Kiwior follows up with the rebound and… over!
Two huge chances at the death spurned by the Gunners.
Thankfully, on this occasion, it really doesn’t matter.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
90+5. Ramsdale shows a safe pair of hands to keep out Junior’s fierce drive in the final minute.
A nice confidence boost for the goalkeeper to end on.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
90+2. Inside six minutes of additional time at the Philips Stadion, and there is none of the late urgency as seen at recent Arsenal away games such as Aston Villa, Luton and Brentford.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    90. A great chance for Til to win it!
The substitute takes advantage of a Gabriel slip up to move in on goal from the right.
He has options to his left, but the Dutchman goes it alone and drags wastefully wide of the far post.
PSV 1-1 Arsenal – Arsenal substitutions
    88. Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Jesus are coming on the final two minutes.
Is it too much to ask that neither of them get injured in the time remaining?
Reiss Nelson and Kai Havertz are the pair that make way.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    87. As Trossard turns and blazes a shot over the crossbar from a long way out, there’s activity in the Arsenal dugout once again.
PSV 1-1 Arsenal – PSV Substitution
    85. Peter Bosz makes another change, replacing Malik Tillman.
The former Rangers loanee departs for Guus Til.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    83. Kiwior has a taste for it now, and has another attempt at goal.
This time it’s blocked by Obispo.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    81. Odegaard delivers, Kiwior nods home, Arsenal celebrate…
…but the flag is up for offside.
It’s not the goalscorer that has been penalised though, instead it’s Gabriel who has been flagged.
There’s a VAR check to determine whether the defender had indeed interfered with the incident, but it doesn’t take long and the decision is upheld.
    It remains 1-1 in Eindhoven.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    79. Nketiah wins a free-kick on the left, and Odegaard will have the chance to test the home defence from a set-piece.
On the bench, Zinchenko has a face like thunder. The very essence of a man who has been asked to go Christmas shopping when there was something good on the television.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    77. Two things to note about Declan Rice playing at centre-half since his introduction.

He’s very good at it because, of course, he is.
How short of central defenders are Arsenal?!

    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    75. Into the final 15 minutes and the contest is still evenly poised.
If qualification was on the line, this would be on a knife edge and as exciting as it comes.
But it’s not so we’re instead plodding to a conclusion.
PSV 1-1 Arsenal – PSV substitutions
    73. Johan Bakayoko is going off so we may as well pack up and go home.
The Belgian (surely destined for the Premier League one day) is replaced by another exciting youngster in Isaac Babadi.
Also on is Barcelona loanee Sergino Dest for Ismael Saibari.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    71. Bakayoko has been quieter than the blistering brilliance of the first half, but comes alive again here to win a free-kick in a dangerous position.
The Belgian had far too much skill, pace and trickery for Jorginho – although sometimes I’d fancy myself as having similar.
Bakayoko takes the free-kick too, stepping up towards the back post where Rice heads clear.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    69. Twenty-one minutes to go…
…which I assume is the album version of the 2001 So Solid Crew single.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    67. Straight down the other end, and Saibari clatters the post.
The Moroccan does brilliantly to turn away from Rice inside the penalty area before unleashing a thumping drive past Ramsdale from an acute angle.
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    66. The Arsenal fans have been done again by the old ball-into-the-side-netting trick.
And the PSV supporters take great pleasure in mocking their English counterparts for twice celebrating what they mistakenly thought was a goal.
It’s Reiss Nelson that prompts it with a determined run and shot.
    Still, fool them once…
    PSV 1-1 Arsenal
    64. Now Nketiah has gone down injured after taking what looks to be a whack in the face.
With a busy Christmas period of games on the horizon, this is the last thing that Mikel Arteta wants to be dealing with.
PSV 1-1 Arsenal – Arsenal substitutions
    62. Mikel Arteta does make a first change. In fact, he makes three of them.
Mohamed Elneny departs injured, but also off is William Saliba and Cedric.
Mind you, this isn’t a bad trio to bring on: here comes Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice. More

Loris Karius set for first Champions League game in 2,028 days after final nightmare as Newcastle face injury emergency

LORIS KARIUS is on standby for Newcastle’s do-or-die Champions League clash with AC Milan – over five years after his blunders cost Liverpool in the final.Martin Dubravka is a doubt and with No 1 keeper Nick Pope crocked, the German could play his first Champions League game since the 2018 final when his howlers handed Real Madrid a 3-1 victory over the Reds.

The first of his two infamous errors, way back 2,028 days ago, came at 0-0 after Karius was clattered by the elbow of Sergio Ramos early in the second half.
He carelessly rolled the ball for Karim Benzema to put Real in front, then let a long-range strike slip in for Gareth Bale to complete a double.
Karius, now 30, did not play again for Liverpool and has featured just once for the Magpies – in last season’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United – since arriving as a free agent last September.
Dubravka was not seen at training yesterday.

Man City could be THROWN out of Champions League if they fail to win title, thanks to shock results in Spain

MANCHESTER CITY could be thrown out of next season’s Champions League if they fail to win the Premier League. The Treble winners could be denied entry if sister club Girona win LaLiga.

Both clubs are members of the City Football Group, who have complete ownership in City and are the largest single shareholders in Girona with a 47 per cent stake.
Uefa rules currently state that if clubs with the same owners qualify for the same competition, only the side with the highest league position will be allowed to enter.
The lower ranked side would instead be moved down to the next competition, which in this case would be the Europa League.
Girona are currently two points clear at the top of LaLiga after beating Barcelona on Sunday.

This season’s LaLiga surprise package have never qualified for Europe, with 10th place their highest finish from three previous top flight seasons.
Meanwhile, City sit fourth in the Premier League and four points off leaders Liverpool.
Based on the two clubs’ current standings, Girona would enter the Champions League over last season’s winners.
Fortunately for City and Girona, though, CFG’s stake in Girona is below majority ownership and therefore avoids breaching Uefa’s multi-club ownership rules.

However, John MacBeath is a director at both clubs according to their official websites and would have to step down from one of those rules if they both qualify for Europe.
Uefa could also ban CFG from transferring players between the two clubs, although the Telegraph report European football’s governing body are considering relaxing their multi-club ownership rules.
The issues facing City could also impact Manchester United once Sir Jim Ratcliffe purchases a 25 per cent stake in the club.

French side Nice are already owned by the British billionaire’s Ineos group and are second in Ligue 1, putting them on course for Champions League qualification.
If Nice maintain their current pace, the Red Devils would require a top two finish to enter the Champions League, a position they find themselves nine points below in sixth. More
