Inside Man Utd’s worst EVER Champions League campaign as they set horror unwanted records and crash out of Europe

MANCHESTER UNITED were dumped out of Europe last night after losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.Erik ten Hag’s side went into the night with a faint chance of progressing, but in truth it felt like they were finally put out of their misery by the German giants.

The Red Devils’ European campaign this year was nothing short of a disaster, and one that fans will hope to forget in a hurry.
From unwanted records to baffling collapses, United’s pitiful effort that saw them accrue just four points has set all the wrong kinds of records.
Their 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich on matchday one set the tone for things to come, with Andre Onana making his first, but not last, blunder of the campaign.
The Cameroonian, who arrived to much fanfare in the summer, somehow allowed Leroy Sane’s shot to squirm beneath him and in for Bayern to go 1-0 up.

Two late goals made the scoreline seem closer than the game ever really felt in truth – but some fans may wonder what might have been had Onana not gifted Bayern the lead.
Man Utd returned home for matchday two, hosting a Galatasaray side that had never won a match in England in 10 attempts.
Until they came up against Ten Hag’s Red Devils.
United had taken the lead on the night, only to quickly be pegged back by former Red Devil Wilfried Zaha, who profited on atrocious defending to get on the end of Davinson Sanchez’s long punt to score.

Rasmus Hojlund gave United another lead, but more woeful defending, this time starting from a Galatasaray throw-in, allowed the Turkish giants to level, much to the £72million summer signing’s frustration.
Onana then blundered again, passing the ball straight to Dries Mertens, who was subsequently fouled in the box by Casemiro.
The Brazilian was sent off for the challenge, handing United an uphill battle.
And while Mauro Icardi missed the resulting penalty, the former Paris Saint-Germain star made amends five minutes later to bag the winner – with even Wanda Nara laughing at United.
The Red Devils grabbed their one and only win on matchday three, edging past Copenhagen 1-0 at Old Trafford.
But even then they had to ride their luck – with Onana saving a last-gasp penalty, with the Danish side having hit the post earlier in the match.

In the return game in Denmark, United had been cruising at 2-0.
That is, until Marcus Rashford’s controversial 42nd minute red card.
Ten Hag watched on as his side collapsed, immediately being pegged back to 2-1 and conceding a penalty before half-time, from which Copenhagen levelled.
Bruno Fernandes gave the ten-men a 3-2 lead with just 20 minutes remaining, but Copenhagen managed to hit back again for 3-3, before 17-year-old Roony Bardghji scored an 87th minute winner to leave the Red Devils, red faced.
Matchday five saw United travel to Turkey to face Galatasaray again, and they were greeted by a torrential downpour.
The gloomy weather may have been a sign of things to come, not that Ten Hag would have guessed it when his side went 2-0 up.
Again they collapsed, however, and again Onana was at the heart of it.
Chelsea flop Hakim Ziyech got Galatasaray back in the game with a tame free-kick, which surprisingly beat Onana despite being fired in on his side.
Scott McTominay restored United’s two-goal lead, only for arguably Onana’s worst mistake of the lot, this time a flap at another Ziyech free-kick, to hand Galatasaray a lifeline.
And they took it with both hands, Kerem Akturkoglu equalising 20 minutes from time

While Man Utd toiled against Bayern Munich last night, amazingly it was Galatasaray and Copenhagen fighting it out to join the German giants in the knockouts.
The Red Devils had needed to beat Bayern and hope that the other game finished a draw in order to advance.
Kingsley Coman’s 71st minute winner for Bayern killed any hopes United had of an unlikely escape.
While Lukas Lerager’s 58th minute strike saw Copenhagen complete a miraculous group stage campaign with a 1-0 win that saw them advance.
Man Utd leaked 15 goals in total in just six games, the most ever conceded by an English team in the Champions League group stage.
They also became the first English side to ever come bottom of a Champions League group twice, having previously done so in the 2005-06 campaign.
As per Opta, United have now lost as many times in 24 games this season, 12, as they did in 62 matches across the entirety of last term.
They have also been dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage in three of their seven appearances since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
That’s as many times as it happened in 18 Champions League seasons under Ferguson’s watch.
This was also the first time that United have lost two of their three Champions League group stage home games since 1997.
Despite the damning statistics, Ten Hag does not reflect ruefully on the campaign.
He told TNT Sports after last night’s match: “I don’t look with regret.
“We want to be in the Champions League, the target was always to qualify for the knock-outs, but we have to learn from it, and accept we played some good football.
“Rasmus Hojlund scored five times, we had some very good performances, and we have to take that into the Premier League.
“We want to be back in the Champions League again and so we have to qualify again.”

Rio Ferdinand names Wayne Rooney as his ‘worst Man Utd team-mate’ in BBC podcast

RIO FERDINAND has explained how Wayne Rooney was his worst team-mate to play with due to the number of arguments they had on the field.Ferdinand and Rooney played in one of the most successful Manchester United teams of all time under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning several Premier Leagues and a Champions League together.
Rio Ferdinand said he and Wayne Rooney would argue because he wanted to get the best out of the strikerCredit: Getty – Contributor
During their ten years together at United, Rooney established himself as the club’s all time record goalscorer and Ferdinand became a Premier League hall of fame defender.
But Ferdinand has revealed that he and Rooney would have their differences on the pitch which led to multiple arguments during games.
The former England centre-back was appearing on rugby league legend Rob Burrow’s podcast.
Burrow suffers from motor neurone disease and asks questions using an eye-gaze machine.

He asks each guest seven questions as he looks to understand how top players operate.
Ferdinand explained his desire to get the best out of Rooney on the field led to arguments.
He said: “The worst team-mate I probably had the most arguments with Wayne Rooney to be honest with you. Never came to blows, it was on the pitch.
“We never argued in training really, it was just match day, we probably argued once every two or three games, effing and blinding, screaming at each other because I wanted more from him.

“The biggest thing for me with Wayne is he wanted to play 30 or 40 yard passes like Paul Scholes, and he could do it, he was that good. I wanted him to score 30 or 40 goals a season, because he could.
“We played one season and he scored 30-something goals and he wasn’t happy because he wasn’t getting involved in the game and dictating it, he was having to play high. And I couldn’t get my head around it. That’s the top striker, I want you to be that because I know you can be that.
“But he loved football that much he wanted to play football like he was playing in the park, and we used to argue, I’d tell him to shoot and he’d scream back at me. But they were good arguments.
The internal arguments proved to be fruitful as Rooney went on to score 253 goals and become United’s all time top goalscorer.
He would re-join his boyhood club Everton in 2017, where he did operate deeper in the team – either as an attacking or defensive midfielder.
Rooney is the current manager of Birmingham in the Championship – but has endured a tough period since taking over in October. More

Man Utd fans spot bizarre tactics from Ten Hag against Bayern that contradict his reasons for dropping Varane

ERIK TEN HAG made a tactical decision last night that appeared to contradict his reason for previously dropping Raphael Varane. The French defender was handed his first start in seven weeks as Manchester United took on Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Jonny Evans was the right-sided centre-half despite Erik ten Hag’s previous reasoningCredit: TNT SPORTS
Ten Hag, 53, has leaned heavily on Harry Maguire during this period, with the England ace winning Premier League Player of the Month for November.
Maguire has often been partnered by former Leicester team-mate Jonny Evans at times, with Varane left on the bench.
The Man Utd boss reasoned that Evans’ ability to play as the left-sided centre-back put him ahead of Varane in the pecking order.
Last night Varane returned to the starting XI alongside Maguire.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
But when Maguire was forced off with injury on 40 minutes, he was replaced by Evans.
Despite having supposedly previously picked Evans over Varane for his ability to play on the left side, it was the latter that took up that position last night – with the former playing on the right.
This left fans confused, with one writing: “Baffles me.”
A second claimed: “No one knows anymore.”

And a third tweeted: “It’s almost like that was rubbish and he’d had a falling out with Varane.”
Ahead of the game, Ten Hag explained his decision.
The Dutchman said of Varane: “He’s very experienced.
“Especially against Bayern we need to defend very strongly and, as we know he’s a very good defender.”
Varane, 30, has made 13 appearances in all competitions this season.
He hasn’t started a Premier League game since September.
While his last start in any competition had come in the 4-3 defeat at Copenhagen last month.
Man Utd lost 1-0 to Bayern last night via Kingsley Coman’s 71st minute strike.
The result saw the Red Devils crash out of Europe entirely, finishing bottom of the group behind Bayern, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
Reflecting on his side’s European campaign, Ten Hag said: “I don’t look with regret.

The return of hooliganism is turning European football into a lethal battleground & why English fans are targets

THEY once called it the English disease, but football violence is now damaging the image of the beautiful game across Europe – and spreading to other sports. This week Turkey has stopped all footie matches indefinitely after a referee was punched to the ground on the pitch by a club president.

And Greece banned fans from top-flight football games for two months after violence erupted between rival volleyball supporters in Athens, severely injuring a police officer.
Meanwhile, France is considering barring away supporters after a fan was stabbed to death ten days ago.
In January an Italian motorway was closed when rival supporters piled into each other, and a year ago crowds of Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb fans delivered Nazi salutes in unison on the streets of Milan.
Across the continent, authorities are struggling to control hooliganism — often aimed at travelling English fans, who receive massive police protection as continental supporters try to test their reputation for street brawling.
    Read More on Football
Two months ago in Milan a Newcastle United fan was stabbed in the stomach by a machete-wielding yob in a balaclava.
This season was Brighton and Hove Albion’s first taste of competitive European football.
But last month in Athens, tear gas aimed by police at riotous fans of the defeated home team AEK ended up choking Brighton supporters.
In May, West Ham players tried to intervene when hooded fans of Dutch side AZ Alkmaar piled into the section of the stadium where the English team’s families were sitting.
    Most read in Football
Football’s ruling bodies fear the return of the hooliganism from decades ago, which in 1985 saw English teams banned from Europe for five years after the deaths of 39 mostly Italian fans in the riot at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.
In August Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said of the violence: “This is the cancer of football and those are not football fans.
“We have to say enough, we have to stop this.”
Then came Monday’s graphic display of football’s ugly side.
Faruk Koca, president of Turkish side MKE Ankaragucu, ran on to the pitch and struck referee Halil Umut Meler in the face, landing him in hospital.
The Turkish Football Federation then indefinitely postponed all games.
Turkey’s “ultra fans” are notorious for carrying weapons, supposedly to kill opponents.
Fenerbahce has a fan group called Kill For You, and in 2000 Galatasaray hooligans stabbed two Leeds United fans to death.
    Empty stadiums
There are also stringent new fan restrictions in neighbouring Greece, where on Monday the government announced that teams would have to play in empty stadiums.
It followed two deaths in bloody clashes between supporters this year alone.
In February a 19-year-old student was bludgeoned to death in Thessaloniki just for saying he supported a rival team, then in August a 29-year-old AEK Athens supporter was stabbed to death by a Dinamo Zagreb thug.
And not having matches to attend might not even stop the violence, as fan rivalry spreads between sports.
The ban on football fans came after police were attacked with flares, stones and petrol bombs outside an Athens volleyball stadium last week after a match between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, who are also bitter football foes.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said: “For years, criminals in the guise of fans have been committing serious crimes by critically injuring and killing people.”
Brighton fans experienced those crazed elements at the end of last month in the Greek capital.
The police tried to subdue rioting AEK Athens yobs with tear gas at the end of the game, but it drifted over to the away fans as well, and some Brighton fans had to be treated by paramedics.

Legia Warsaw mob throw flares at police and horses last month at Aston VillaCredit: Reuters
Life-long Seagulls fan Mike Purser, 54, told The Sun: “They tear-gassed their fans who were waiting for us to come out.
“It blew back into the stadium. They locked us in and wouldn’t let us go down, but as soon as it happened, they took us down and gave us water.”
The previous month in Marseille, the risk of things turning ugly meant Brighton fans had to be closely guarded.
The French side’s ultras have attacked their own training ground and have a reputation for being the country’s most rabid fans.
Property developer Mike continued: “Marseille was like a military performance to get to the ground. We had to be there three or four hours before kick-off.
“Coming out was a palaver because they wouldn’t let us go down into the concourse. People were struggling because it was so hot and I saw some people passing out.”
In September three men were arrested outside a Glasgow hostel after fans of Rangers and Spanish side Real Betis clashed following their Europa League match in the city.
The fighting saw windows smashed and security locking the hostel with Betis fans inside in a bid to bring the violence to an end.
Tartan Army fans have a reputation for being boisterous but well-behaved, with recent flashpoints on foreign trips emerging when police target supporters.
Footage of a Spanish cop beating a Scotland fan emerged ahead of the side’s Euro 2024 qualifier in Seville in October.
In February French police came in for criticism when Uefa said that Liverpool and Real Madrid fans could have died because the 2022 Champions League final in Paris was handled so badly by heavy-handed cops.
The authorities already ban away fans from historically troublesome games, but may go further after a Nantes fan died during a fight with Nice supporters earlier this month.

Trouble after a hooded AZ Alkmaar gang charged Hammers fansCredit: Getty
Trouble often breaks out away from stadiums.
Newcastle fan Eddie McKay, 58, was slashed three times as he walked to his Milan hotel before his side played AC Milan.
It is not uncommon for thugs to find out which bars the English fans are drinking in and to arrive spoiling for a fight.
West Ham supporter Alfie Barker, 33, believes English fans are targeted.
He said: “Two Belgian fans came up to me and my brother in a Brussels bar and asked, ‘Do you want a fight?’ We said no, but they didn’t go away.
“It was just because we were speaking English. We weren’t wearing West Ham kits — I never have the team’s colours on in Europe.”
West Ham supporters have seen a lot of trouble on the European mainland in the past couple of years.
Eintracht Frankfurt fans were filmed charging towards Hammers supporters in a Seville bar in March 2022, Belgian side Anderlecht apologised for their fans throwing seats at West Ham supporters in October that year and at the AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar, Holland in May, the club’s fans were assaulted in their seats.
West Ham boss David Moyes said after the Alkmaar game: “Was I worried? Yeah, my family were there and I had friends in that section.”
Eintracht’s yobs are developing an unsavoury reputation.
This year 50 German police officers were injured by them in Frankfurt and cars were set alight when they clashed with cops in Naples, even though they had been banned from Napoli’s stadium.
But West Ham supporters also got into trouble for throwing objects on to the pitch in Genk, Belgium, and setting off flares in Prague.
Hammers fan Alfie Barker said: ‘I didn’t see trouble at matches until we went into Europe’Credit: The West Ham Way Channel/Youtube
And there are certainly signs that the “English disease” is making a comeback in Britain.
Last season the police made the highest number of arrests at football matches in England and Wales for nearly a decade. In 2022-23 there were 2,264 football-related arrests, up 66 on the previous figure, and the worst since 2013-14.
There have been several pitch invasions, including one in January in which Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale was kicked in the back.
There was also great shame at the Euro 2020 final two years ago when England fans tried to storm into Wembley Stadium.
But the most violent disturbance at a game in recent years in England was arguably the one at Villa Park in Birmingham at the end of November.
Fans from Polish side Legia Warsaw threw flares at police and attacked their horses.
Unless clubs across the Continent can stamp out the rising tide of often organised unrest, families will be afraid to attend matches, while some fans won’t go to Europe for fear of ending up bloodied or bruised.

Man Utd will need to focus on the Premier League now.
If they want to be in Europe next season, they will have to turn their season around from this point.
Bruno Fernandes will be suspended for the weekend, it remains to be seen if Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are fit for the short trip.

Early European exit for Red Devils
It is not the script that the club or fans would have written but Man Utd exit the Champions League at the group stage.
They are further disappointed to finish bottom of the group and failing to even make the Europa League from a third-placed finish.
It is the first time a Man Utd side have lost four games in the group stage, conceding 15 goals in the process.
