ALFIE JONES buried the decisive penalty in a dramatic spot-kick shoot-out to send Leeds crashing out of the Carabao Cup and Hull into Round Three.
Tigers’ centre-back Jones struck after Ezgjan Alioski had taken this contest to penalties with a stoppage-time leveller for Marcelo Bielsa’s Premier League new boys.

And the Tigers fully deserved to emerge victorious from a clash they dominated from start to finish.
Like most Championship sides last term, Leeds enjoyed a jolly good time of it against Hull.
But while the Whites racked-up a league double over City on their way to winning the second tier title, the Tigers tumbled from being fringe play-off contenders to rock bottom in the table and ultimate relegation.
The season turned sour on the Humberside outfit after they committed soccer suicide by flogging off prized assets Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki to West Ham and West Brom respectively in the January transfer window.

NO FLUKE
They are now in the process of repairing broken confidence, and want to give something back to their long-suffering fans by getting some momentum going as they plot a path back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Boss Grant McCann’s boys made a bright start of it by winning their opening two games of the campaign, at Sunderland in this competition, and at Gillingham in League One.
Leeds, on the other hand, ended their 16 years in the Football League wilderness by giving a highly creditable performance in a 4-3 defeat against the Premier League champions at Anfield.

Their thrilling display carried the promise of a successful return to the top flight for the Yorkshire giants, and Bielsa has bolstered his gifted squad with some astute signings this summer.

City showed six changes from the side that triumphed at the Priestfield Stadium, and they rocked their lofty White Rose rivals by firing in a fifth minute opener.
Wilks, a summer signing from Barnsley, couldn’t believe his luck when the Leeds defence allowed him all the time and space he needed to rifle home a rising drive from the edge of the box which took a wicked deflection on its way into the roof of the net.

And the Tigers showed it was no fluke as they went on to dominate a first-half which could easily have seen them plunder another three goals.
On 17 minutes, Keane Lewis-Potter let fly with a blistering 20-yard effort which keeper Kiko Casilla was grateful to grab at the second time of asking.
Then, eight minutes later, towering centre-back Sean McLoughlin flicked a bullet of a header inches wide from Callum Elder’s inch-perfect free-kick.

Finally, three minutes before the break, Lewis-Potter had Casilla grabbing thin air with a delightful curler from the edge of the box which shaved the outside of the flailing keeper’s left-hand post.
The disappointing home side’s best effort on a bad night for Bielsa saw Alioski’s 26th minute drive cannon away to safety off the legs of a Hull defender.
And the impressive Tigers rearguard was always in command against a home side that for so long didn’t have a clue how to break them down

WAYNE ROONEY didn’t put on his shooting boots as Derby crashed out of the Carabao Cup after losing 2-1 to Preston North End.
England’s record goalscorer lined up as a striker but the 36-year-old’s influence was minimal as Derby only managed one shot on target.

Daniel Johnson’s 92nd-minute penalty capped off a comeback by Preston after Jason Knight put The Rams ahead in the 51st-minute.
Preston should have been infront in the first half after former Manchester United youngster Josh Harrop forced Kelle Roos into a good save.
Derby were then down to ten men after Mike Te Wierik was sent off which allowed Preston sub Tom Barkhuizen to smash an equaliser in off the bar before Johnson slotted home from the spot.
West Ham secured their spot in the next round after easing past Charlton to win 3-0 at the London Stadium.

A double from Sebastien Haller and a late goal from Felipe Anderson proved to be the difference.
Elsewhere, Asmir Begovic ended a marathon shoot-out to deny Luka Milivojevic and seal Bournemouth a Carabao Cup third round trip to Manchester City.
The veteran keeper had fluffed his own penalty, only to come up trumps to keep out the Crystal Palace captain and decide the tie after 24 spot-kicks had been taken in all.

Jack Grealish celebrated signing a new long-term contract with Aston Villa by capping a five star display with a late decider against Burton Albion.

Grealish had already teed up record signing Ollie Watkins’ first competitive goal for the club and then ended fears of Villa being dragged into a penalty shoot-out.
He smashed a 20-yarder past Burton keeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe with just two minutes remaining, with Keinan Davis adding a third in injury-time.
Barnsley delivered a Carabao Cup KO blow to fizzless Middlesbrough to set-up a third round clash at Chelsea.
Luke Thomas was the star of the show as his two assists for Patrick Schmidt and Jordan Williams helped secure a 2-0 win and trip to Stamford Bridge to take on his old Derby boss Frank Lampard next week.
Meanwhile, Newcastle edged past Blackburn at St James’ Park thanks to Ryan Fraser’s debut goal.
The Magpies will now travel to Morecambe next week, after they beat Harry Kewell’s Oldham Town courtesy of Aaron Wildig’s 22nd minute strike.
Millwall will face Premier League opposition Burnley or Sheffield United in the third round after a 3-1 win against Cheltenham Town.

Alfie May had an equaliser chalked off for offside for the League Two side before Connor Mahoney tapped in Shane Ferguson’s cross to double Millwall’s lead.
Matt Smith then got in on the act for the Lions with a fine volley before Finn Azaz scored a consolation for the Robins.
Gary Monk’s Sheffield Wednesday brushed past Rochdale with a 2-0 victory.
Elias Kachunga opened the scoring after netting his first goal for the club since his move from Huddersfield in the 54th-minute before Josh Windass added a second late on.
Championship new boys Coventry City suffered defeat on penalties to League One side Gillingham to miss out the possibility of Stoke or Wolves in the next round.
Max Biamou put the visitors ahead on the hour mark before Jordan Graham netted from the spot in the 94th-minute to take it to penalties which the Gills eventually won 5-4.

Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town saw themselves through to round three with a 2-1 win over Port Vale.
Paddy Madden gave the hosts an early lead as his deflected shot ricocheted in before Danny Whitehead levelled shortly after the break.
But a 75th-minute Josh Morris volley was enough to set up a tie against either Everton or Salford City.
Newport County left it late to beat Cambridge United 1-0. 
Scott Twine rifled a strike from outside the box into the top corner ten minutes before the final whistle.
Elsewhere Luton beat Reading 1-0 away thanks to Jordan Clark’s first half goal.
Meanwhile Lincoln hit Bradford for five, and Watford prevailed on penalties away at Oxford.

The two teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes with the scores level at 1-1, and it was the Championship side that cruised to victory in the spot-kicks.
And finally Leyton Orient overcome Plymouth in a five-goal thriller as they won 3-2 at Brisbane Road.
A 93rd minute strike from Danny Johnson settled the game as Orient came back from 2-0 down to win the tie.
