Brighton 4 Portsmouth 0: Seagulls’ rampant B-Team unleash their A-game to see off Pompey in Carabao Cup second round

IT turned out to be quite a night for Brighton’s rampant B-Team as they unleashed their A-game to see off Pompey and head into the Carabao Cup third round.
There were no survivors in the Seagulls’ starting line-up from their defeat to Chelsea on Monday.

Brighton ran out rampant 4-0 winners against Portsmouth

Boss Graham Potter had urged his fringe players to go and earn a regular spot to face Newcastle on Sunday.
And they did just that to book an away tie with Preston next week.
It was Alexis Mac Allister who fired the hosts ahead with his first goal in English football on 38 minutes.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh whipped in the cross to the young Argentinian – who launched a bullet header beyond the despairing dive of Craig MacGillvray.

However, Brighton were let off when the flag went up after Marcus Harness bundled in a John Marquis cross.
After the break, Jahanbakhsh unleashed an unstoppable 54th minute thunderbolt past MacGillvray.
The visitors were made to pay and just THREE minutes later, Pascal Gross whipped in a corner to Bernardo, who rose highest to head home his first goal in a Seagulls shirt.

The Brazilian sparred his blushes, having been left with regret for scuppering a huge chance early on.

MacGillvray had palmed a fierce drive from Victor Gyokeres straight into the defender’s path – but he blazed his attempt hopelessly high.
But the Seagulls were flying when Swedish youngster Gyokeres sealed the deal after turning smartly to rifle beyond MacGillvray on 70 minutes – with his first senior goal for the club.

Stoke 1 Wolves 0: Potters new-boy Jacob Brown dumps Prem big-spenders after £35m Fabio Silva misses sitter

A NEW arrival stole the show.
But unfortunately for Wolves it wasn’t their £35million Portuguese wonderboy Fabio Silva who enjoyed a dream debut.

    5

Jacob Brown came off the bench after 69 minutes and turned this tie on it’s head

    5

Brown’s winner comes eight days after signing from Barnsley in a deal worth £2m

Instead,  22-year-old Stoke’s less-publicised newbie Jacob Brown came off the bench for 20 minutes to dump big-spenders Wolves – eight days after signing from Barnsley in a deal worth £2million.
His dramatic late winner is a moment he will remember for the rest of his days as he stunned Europa League quarter-finalists Wolves to set up a third round tie against Gillgham next week.
And costing a cool £33million less than Wolves’ new club record signing Silva, Potters boss Michael O’Neill will feel he’s struck gold!
Brown came off the bench to replace Lee Gregory after 69 minutes and turned this tie on it’s head 15 minutes later.

He burst through to accept a pass from former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher and kept his cool to rifle in a shot which John Ruddy got a glove to but couldn’t keep the ball out.
It crept agonisingly over the line, almost in slow motion, but it was enough to send the Potters into the next round at the end of a battling display.
Nuno Espirito Santo gave the Championship side due respect by fielding a powerful team which included England new boy Conor Coady at the heart of Wolves’ first-choice defence.
Ahead of the ever-present skipper was an impressive array of Premier League talent, including Ruben Neves, Adama Traore and Leo Dendoncker.

Stoke celebrate their late winner against Prem side Wolves

But the real focus of attention for Wolves fans was on Fabio Silva, the club’s new record £35million signing from Porto, who made his eagerly anticipated debut.
The 18-year-old Portuguese superkid partnered Traore up front and showed some nice touches but he will curse himself for passing up three decent chances.
His most glaring miss came 15 minutes from the end when he scuffed his shot wide from six yards with the goal at his mercy.
In truth the teenager couldn’t have been handed many harder debuts than a chilly Thursday night against Stoke!
Three times in a dour first half Wolves wonderboy had his legs bruised by another former Porto man, Dutch international defender Bruno Martins Indi, who took objection to his sprightly opponent.
Martins Indi was eventually booked deep into the second half for one foul too many on Silva.
But someone might need to have a word in the ear of the kid about his theatrics, as he did a fair imitation of Neymar – in that particular ‘skill-set!’

Marcelo Bielsa defends making Kiko Casilla captain after Leeds fans hit out at decision over racism shame

MARCELO BIELSA will never cave to public pressure after making the controversial Kiko Casilla captain against Hull in the Carabao Cup.
The Spanish keeper was given an eight-match ban last season for racially abusing Charlton’s Jonathan Leko.

Many Leeds fans were up in arms when the 33-year-old, who is now second-choice to Illan Meslier, was given the armband for Wednesday’s penalties defeat.
But Bielsa said the rest of the team approved it.
Then he questioned how many supporters opposed the choice.
The Leeds boss said: “His team-mates think he deserved to be the captain and we have to listen to those messages.

“The players see in their captain someone they feel can represent them.
“Surely those who judge Kiko ignore a lot of the things his team-mates see in him?
“Should I have contemplated whether to pick him as captain by taking the opinions of the fans or players?
“The public won’t have all the information that his team-mates have.

Carabao Cup round-up: Robson-Kanu scores screamer, Bees sting Saints and Fulham edge through

SLAVEN BILIC saw West Brom sink League Two newcomers Harrogate – but reckoned his side should have produced even more after their 3-0 win.
Hal Robson-Kanu scored his first League Cup goal in a DECADE as two stunning strikes in the space of four first half minutes put Albion in control.

Sub Callum Robinson wrapped up the tie when he converted Kyle Edwards’ cross from close range with 13 minutes left.
But boss Bilic felt the margin of victory should have been bigger, as he said: “We scored wonderful goals, but the only negative was that we should’ve scored more.
“We played with confidence and dominance.”
Rakeem Harper collected a half clearance and spun past Josh Falkingham and George Thomson before powering in a spectacular drive from 30 yards for only his second Albion goal.

Robson-Kanu extended Baggies’s lead with another excellent finish – he collected the ball 25 yards from goal and curled home a superb left-footed shot.
Charlie Austin had a shot cleared off the line by Town’s Warren Burrell before Robinson added a third after being on the field for only four minutes.
Meanwhile Aleksandar Mitrovic made a happy return to Fulham’s starting line-up on his 26th birthday to head Scott Parker’s men into the third round.
The beefy Serbian striker, last season’s Championship golden boot winner, had not started for his club since before their successful play-off campaign.

    4

But Mitrovic nodded his 50th goal in his 101st Fulham appearance to see off Paul Lambert’s League One side and book a third-round home tie against Sheffield Wednesday next week.
Parker gave debuts to four summer signings, who had all missed out on Saturday’s opening-day drubbing by Arsenal.
His selected a strong, experienced team who controlled the game but were unable to put Ipswich convincingly to the sword.
But the Fulham boss saw one of his new recruits, former Lyon right-back Kenny Tete, supply the deep cross for Mitrovic to score with a firm downward header seven minutes before half-time.
Ipswich’s Emyr Huws shot wildly wide when well placed in first-half injury-time but Mitrovic almost headed a second from another Tete centre only to be denied by a smart double-save from David Cornell who also kept out Bobby Reid’s follow-up effort.
Anthony Knockaert, Neeskens Kebano and Tom Cairney all went close for the Premier League newcomers as they strove for a second goal.

Brentford advanced through to the third round after beating Southampton 2-0Credit: Rex Features
Elsewhere Southampton crashed out at home against Brentford as they lost 2-0 against the Championship side.
First half goals from Christian Norgaard and Josh Dasilva proved to be the difference.
In another shock, Hull knocked out Leeds at Elland Road on penalties in a dramatic shootout.
The Tigers won 9-8 on spot-kicks after the two teams couldn’t be separated after 90 minutes.
Hull thought they had initially done enough to win the game through Mallik Wilks’ early goal, only for Ezgjan Alioski to equalise in the 93rd minute.
There was to be no cup upset at Goodison Park after Everton eased past Salford City as they won 3-0.

Defender Michael Keane put the Toffees ahead, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Moise Keane getting on the score sheet in the second half.
And finally Bristol City cruised into the next round of the cup after they smashed Northampton 4-0 at Ashton Gate.
Chris Martin opened the scoring, with Kasey Palmer scoring either side of Antoine Semenyo’s 82nd minute strike.

Leeds 1 Hull City 1 (Hull win 9-8 on pens): Jones keeps cool to KO Bielsa’s Prem newcomers in epic Carabao Cup shootout

ALFIE JONES buried the decisive penalty in a dramatic spot-kick shoot-out to send Leeds crashing out of the Carabao Cup and Hull into Round Three.
Tigers’ centre-back Jones struck after Ezgjan Alioski had taken this contest to penalties with a stoppage-time leveller for Marcelo Bielsa’s Premier League new boys.

And the Tigers fully deserved to emerge victorious from a clash they dominated from start to finish.
Like most Championship sides last term, Leeds enjoyed a jolly good time of it against Hull.
But while the Whites racked-up a league double over City on their way to winning the second tier title, the Tigers tumbled from being fringe play-off contenders to rock bottom in the table and ultimate relegation.
The season turned sour on the Humberside outfit after they committed soccer suicide by flogging off prized assets Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki to West Ham and West Brom respectively in the January transfer window.

    NO FLUKE
They are now in the process of repairing broken confidence, and want to give something back to their long-suffering fans by getting some momentum going as they plot a path back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Boss Grant McCann’s boys made a bright start of it by winning their opening two games of the campaign, at Sunderland in this competition, and at Gillingham in League One.
Leeds, on the other hand, ended their 16 years in the Football League wilderness by giving a highly creditable performance in a 4-3 defeat against the Premier League champions at Anfield.

Their thrilling display carried the promise of a successful return to the top flight for the Yorkshire giants, and Bielsa has bolstered his gifted squad with some astute signings this summer.

City showed six changes from the side that triumphed at the Priestfield Stadium, and they rocked their lofty White Rose rivals by firing in a fifth minute opener.
Wilks, a summer signing from Barnsley, couldn’t believe his luck when the Leeds defence allowed him all the time and space he needed to rifle home a rising drive from the edge of the box which took a wicked deflection on its way into the roof of the net.

And the Tigers showed it was no fluke as they went on to dominate a first-half which could easily have seen them plunder another three goals.
On 17 minutes, Keane Lewis-Potter let fly with a blistering 20-yard effort which keeper Kiko Casilla was grateful to grab at the second time of asking.
Then, eight minutes later, towering centre-back Sean McLoughlin flicked a bullet of a header inches wide from Callum Elder’s inch-perfect free-kick.

Finally, three minutes before the break, Lewis-Potter had Casilla grabbing thin air with a delightful curler from the edge of the box which shaved the outside of the flailing keeper’s left-hand post.
The disappointing home side’s best effort on a bad night for Bielsa saw Alioski’s 26th minute drive cannon away to safety off the legs of a Hull defender.
And the impressive Tigers rearguard was always in command against a home side that for so long didn’t have a clue how to break them down
