Man Utd MUST lift Carabao Cup and expect to win trophies under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, says Harry Maguire

MANCHESTER UNITED must win the Carabao Cup and expect to deliver more trophies under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to Harry Maguire.
Jose Mourinho led the club to League Cup and Europa League glory in 2017 before being replaced by the Norwegian in December 2018.

Current Red Devils boss Solskjaer is yet to lift his first piece of silverware in charge.
But with United reaching the Carabao Cup semi-finals, skipper Maguire has called on his side to go all the way – and reintroduce a culture of success at Old Trafford.
Speaking after Wednesday’s quarter-final win at Everton, the ex-Leicester City man said: “When you play for Manchester United you expect to win trophies.
“This year we reached our first semi-final in our first competition.

“But now it’s about winning the big games and lifting trophies for this club.”
United face neighbours Manchester City at home in the semis.
Tottenham take on Brentford for a spot in the rearranged final at Wembley on April 25.
Solskjaer saw his side crash out to Pep Guardiola’s men at this stage last year.

Now he is desperate to end the Etihad domination of the tournament with City beating Arsenal, Chelsea and then Aston Villa in the last three finals.
The Norwegian added: “I’ve just seen that we drew City again, after we played them in the semis last year. Very interesting!
“We lost three semi-finals last year, and that is a step not far enough for this club, so we want to do better this year.
“We have a big squad, and every win boots our morale and self-belief.
“A semi-final is sometimes worse than the final because it’s the worst possible time to lose a game and go out of the competition.”

Spurs fans back Dele Alli as he is named man of the match vs Stoke while O’Hara claims Mourinho ‘killing his confidence’

TOTTENHAM fans have leapt to Dele Alli’s defence in his feud with Jose Mourinho.
The England midfielder was named man of the match against Stoke after a vote by Spurs supporters.

And that was despite him being hauled off and replaced by Erik Lamela just after the hour mark.
Mourinho was furious with Alli’s role in Stoke’s equaliser in the 53rd minute as he lost possession and let the Championship side in to score.
Alli threw a strop when he was taken off while Mourinho called him out after the 3-1 Carabao Cup win.
The Spurs boss said: “A player in that position is a player that has to link and create and not to create problems for his own team.”

But Tottenham fans defended the midfielder, who made his first start since November 26.
Almost 40,000 fans voted in a poll for man of the match – and a third of the votes went to Alli.
He beat the likes of Harry Winks, Harry Kane and Ben Davies to the award despite being hooked off early.
One Spurs fan tweeted: “It’s a shame that Dele being our best player for 90 per cent of his time on the pitch probably still isn’t enough for Jose to see he should be a part of his plans.

“Makes one mistake and he’s scapegoated for what we can all agree is poor defending.”

Dele received one third of the near 40,000 votes in a fan poll
Another wrote: “Really Tottenham? The only player trying anything and Jose takes him off again!!”
Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara accused Mourinho of ‘digging out’ Alli and ‘killing his confidence’.
O’Hara told talkSPORT: “When you come out and you’re digging a player out in the press, I think he needs to help him.
“What’s he gaining from going to the press and digging out that single performance?
“It’s just killing his confidence more. He’s an investment and an asset to the club and whether he’s in your plans or not, you don’t want to kill his confidence so much that you totally lose him.

“I didn’t like the way Mourinho dug him out and he keeps singling him out.
“I think Mourinho’s doing a great job and he’s got the team all on side but, for me, it doesn’t sit right with the way he keeps digging out Dele Alli.
“Even if you’re gonna push him out then just say ‘you’re not wanted’ and ‘he’s not in my plans’.
“If you’re killing his confidence and saying ‘he’s not for me’ and you’re just digging out his performance, then surely you’re just devaluing the player.”

Is EFL Carabao Cup semi-final one leg or two, and what are the rules?

THE CARABAO CUP is now down to the final four.
Man Utd take on Man City in a huge Manchester derby while Brentford face Tottenham, but what are EFL Cup semi-final rules?

Is the Carabao Cup semi-final one leg or two?

The Carabao Cup semi-final has traditionally been two legs, although the rules have been changed in recent years.
Away goals were previously used after extra time to separate two sides if they happened to be level after two legs.
But that was done away with when the EFL scrapped extra time, meaning any ties that were level were decided on penalties.
And this year’s Carabao Cup semi-final will consist of just one leg in order to ease fixture congestion caused by the delayed start to the season and the Covid pandemic.

Whichever team is drawn first in each tie will play at home.

Does the Carabao Cup have VAR?
The Carabao Cup does not have VAR – the only competition Premier League sides participate in in which this is the case.
The tournament is organised by the EFL who have chosen not to introduce it at any level.

    MORE FROM SOLSKJAER
“This was a proper game of football, with fans, tackles, yellow cards and chances, I enjoyed it. We know that when we defend well we have players that can win us the game, the spirit in the camp is really good, winning gives energy and gives you a boost for the next game and we’re in the semi’s just one step away from the final.”

    REACTION FROM SOLSKJAER
“Very good start, first 20-25 minutes I thought we were excellent should have been 1,20r 3 up but Olsen made a few good saves and kept them in the game and they had a good spell just before half time but I felt second half we dominated.”

    MORE FROM ANCELOTTI
“They had more control and better quality we know this and so the game was planned to defend well, we had some but not a lot of opportunities on the counter but that was the game we planned. We don’t need to have regrets because the team performed, they sacrificed, they worked hard with good spirit, we lost and we look forward to the next game.”

    REACTION FROM ANCELOTTI
“No regrets for the performance, we defended well, we had a difficult start but after 20 minutes the game was under control, we didn’t play attacking football but we needed to defend, until the last three minutes we defended well.”

    MORE FROM MAGUIRE
“We play for Manchester United, we’re expected to win trophies we got to the semi finals last year, this year we’ve reach our first semi final in our first competition, we need to start winning the big games and go on to lift trophies for this club.”

    REACTION FROM MAGUIRE
He told Sky Sports: ‘ I thought it was an excellent performance, we started the game really well and had 3/4 great chances and needed to be a little bit more clinical but we kept going and digging in and knew the chance would come and Edinson has put a great finish in and we managed to seal the win and go through to the next round.”

Man Utd given derby clash with Guardiola’s City in Carabao Cup semis as Tottenham face Brentford

MANCHESTER UNITED will host neighbours City in the Carabao Cup last four as a tough reward for beating Everton – with Tottenham drawn against first-time semi-finalists Brentford in another derby.
Edinson Cavani struck late and majestically to spark United’s 2-0 Goodison triumph, before Anthony Martial hit the clincher.

Gareth Bale and Harry Kane both scored as Spurs set up a semi-final derby with Brentford by winning 3-1 at Stoke CityCredit: Reuters

That followed Spurs winning 3-1 at Stoke earlier on Wednesday night, as Gareth Bale, Ben Davies and Harry Kane netted to confirm their superiority.
It leaves Jose Mourinho’s men two wins away from ending their 12-year trophy drought.
And it means another memorable night coming up for Championship promotion hopefuls Brentford, whose 131-year history will finally include the semis of a major tournament.

But the spotlight clash is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United landing a direct opportunity to show they are finally beginning to revolve the power balance in Manchester.
United already sit third in the Premier League, three points above Pep Guardiola’s City, but lost to their neighbours at the same stage in last year’s competition.
But after moving possibly 180 minutes from silverware, Solskjaer said: “I’ve just seen that we drew City again, after we played them in the semis last year. Very interesting!
“We lost three semi-finals last year, and that is a step not far enough for this club, so we want to do better this year.

“We have a big squad, and every win boots our morale and self-belief.”

    EFL CUP S/F DRAW

But the Norwegian added: “A semi-final is sometimes worse than the final because it’s the worst possible time to lose a game and go out of the competition.”
He was, though, delighted with United’s winning momentum.
And of overcoming Everton he said: “We know that when we defend well we have players to win us the game.
“Spirit in camp is good, winning gives energy and gives you a boost so we head into Boxing Day positive.”
The most romantic feature of the semi-finals, however, is surely Brentford’s run.
Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle gave them four Prem scalps in the EFL Cup this term.

And boss Thomas Frank hailed said: “It’s a big step for the club and shows how far we have progressed.. (We’ve) created a new chapter.”
The semi-finals are single-leg ties instead of the traditional double-headers in order to ease fixture congestion caused by the delayed start to the season.
They will be played on the week commencing 4 January 2021. More

Jose Mourinho furious with Dele Alli as out-of-favour star is subbed vs Stoke after ‘costing Spurs goal’

JOSE MOURINHO was furious with Dele Alli after he wasted his chance to impress for Tottenham.
The Spurs boss saw his team reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals but was annoyed out-of-favour Dele gave away possession for Stoke’s leveller.

Jose Mourinho admitted he was left angry with the England midfielderCredit: AFP or licensors

Asked if was angry with the midfielder, Mourinho said: “Yes. A player who plays in that position is a player who has to link and has to create and not create problems for his own team.
“Of course in that situation, it handed them a counter attack behind our defenders.
“They caught us and it transformed the game that was totally in our hands so yes, I was upset.”
Alli’s Spurs future now looks doomed and he did not even make the matchday squad for Sunday’s loss to Leicester. Just 13 minutes after his mistake, Alli was replaced by Erik Lamela.

Meanwhile, Mourinho was left frustrated after Gareth Bale asked to come off at half-time with an injury after scoring the opening goal. Although Stoke made it 1-1, goals from Ben Davies and Harry Kane put Spurs through.
Quizzed about Bale, Mourinho said: “Yes. It was his decision. He felt something at the end of the first half.
“He did not want to come off before the first half so he stayed but while he was walking to the dressing rooms he told me immediately he could not come out for the second half.
”I think it was his calf. I am not sure. At that time, I wanted to reorganise the team.”

    Jose Mourinho on Dele Alli

Spurs deserved to go through with Mourinho having won the League Cup on four occasions.
He added: “They did not touch the ball in the first half, have a shot or have a corner.
“We needed to kill the game but instead, we allowed them to score for 1-1.
“After that was a moment we needed stability and attitude and we had it. I thought the second goal was coming. Son also scored a goal that VAR would have allowed.”

Spurs midfielder Harry Winks said: “We knew coming into this one that it would be a cold, wet and windy Wednesday night in Stoke so it would be tough but when we apply ourselves and we are aggressive from the first whistle, we make it easier for ourselves.”
Stoke boss Michael O’Neill said: “We expected Spurs to come with a strong team. Maybe not just as strong as they started with.
“In the first half we were too timid and did not affect the game as near as we had hoped but we were more positive in the second half but Spurs showed their class.”

Man Utd verdict: Solskjaer makes nine changes but Cavani and Co. show Red Devils squad is packed with match-winners

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER can do no wrong – as long as his team are playing away from Old Trafford against domestic opposition.
The United manager was able to make nine changes, and still field a powerful team that never looked like slipping to a first away defeat since January – if you do not count their dismal Champions League campaign.

Solskjaer insisted United see this competition as a great chance to win some silverware for the first time since 2017, when they won the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.
And he admitted the pressure is on to start winning trophies again, although at first sight his decision to dispense with nine of the players who started the 6-2 demolition of Leeds did not suggest he felt this competition was THAT important.
But despite their up and down results this season, United have a big squad, packed with classy performers.
And in Edinson Cavani, they have brought in another match-winner. His brilliant 88th minute strike settled this quarter-final, with substitute Anthony Martial’s stoppage tie second early a bit of icing on the cake.

There were clear signs Everton were still haunted by memories of last month’s 3-1 Goodison Park defeat against Solskjaer’s side as they backed off and let United dictate the pace right from the start.

Nineteen attempts on goal compared to just seven from the home team told its own story.
Maybe the Toffees had also taken a look at that incredible away run since January, and decided their best bet was to hit United on the break.
Instead, they made the fatal mistake of allowing their much-changed opponents to settle. And United were worthy winners.

Man Utd ratings: Lively Cavani deserves his winner but Van de Beek offers little in win over Everton

EDINSON CAVANI proved the late hero for Manchester United as he fired them into the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
The Uruguayan fired home in the closing stage before a stoppage-time strike from Anthony Martial helped the Red Devils see off Everton 2-0.

Edinson Cavani lashed home late on as Manchester United beat EvertonCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Here’s how SunSport’s David Facey rated each United player on the night.
    DEAN HENDERSON – 6/10
Not really tested too often, but well positioned to deal with Sigurdsson’s curling free kick.
Got his angles right again when Sigurdsson hit another one through a tight group of players.
    AXEL TUANZEBE – 5
Not as keen to get forward on the overlap as Telles, and a couple of needless fouls eased the early pressure on Everton.

Has to show more if he wants to be anything more than fringe player.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 7
One of only two men retained from the thumping win over Leeds, which sums up how important he has become to United.
Handled the aerial threat of Calvert-Lewin in typical no-nonsense fashion.

    ERIC BAILLY – 6
Confident and accomplished at bringing the ball out of defence, and couple of good passes to feet during United’s early dominance.
Sucked in a bit too easily when Everton started asking a few questions of the United defence.
    ALEX TELLES – 6
Some outstanding deliveries as United won plenty of early corners, and always eager to join in the attack.
Not quite as assured when he was backpedalling, but a good shift overall.

Anthony Martial emerged from the bench to seal the resultCredit: Reuters
    PAUL POGBA – 6
Ok, but you’re entitled to expect more from a player of his stature. Hit and miss with those long, diagonal balls.
Looked surprised when a Telles corner reached him on the far post, and failed to get any power in his header.
    NEMANJA MATIC – 7
Read the game as expertly as ever, and hard to remember him missing his target with a single pass.
But it would be good to see him trying his luck a bit further upfield.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK – 5
The Dutchman is a willing runner, but has shown precious little when he is in possession.
Ran into a few blind alleys, and no surprise to see him hooked midway through the second half.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 7
Everything United do these days seems to revolved around the Portugese playmaker, and it was no different here.
Simply oozes class, but left his shooting boots at home for once. Solskjaer has to be careful not to overwork him.

Cavani proved the bright spark for United at Goodison ParkCredit: Reuters
    MASON GREENWOOD – 5
Good chance to prosper against a makeshift full back in Godfrey, but did not really make the most of it. Looked to win free kicks rather than get crosses in.
Unlucky when his glancing header grazed the outside of the post in the first half.
    EDINSON CAVANI – 8
Really lively early on, and never afraid to pull the trigger, even from tight angles. And brilliant finish for his late, late goal.
Lucky to avoid punishment for instigating an off the ball tussle with Mina.
    Subs
Marcus Rashford (For Greenwood 67 mins) – 6
Sent on to push for a winner and looked lively in the closing minutes.

Anthony Martial (For VDB 67 mins) – 7
Fell over his own feet when played in by Fernandes late on. Then settled it.
Luke Shaw (For Telles 84 mins) – 5
