EFL Trophy renamed Papa John’s Trophy as takeaway joint take over sponsorship and Burton hand out free pizza

CLUBS are hungry for a slice of the EFL Trophy after it was renamed the Papa John’s Trophy following a tasty new sponsorship deal.
Burton Albion players handed out pizzas for families in need to celebrate the EFL’s new three-year arrangement with the Pizza takeaway firm – and boost Marcus Rashford’s campaign to extend free school meals.

Papa John’s will supply a new base and toppings for the cup after succeeding former car leasing company sponsor Leasing.com as its sponsors.
But some fans mocked the partnership on social media, suggesting it was a little too cheesy.
One said: “This is the reason it is not taken seriously!” – while another argued the competition’s new moniker was worse than “Uber eats”.

But others couldn’t resist tucking away a few open goals – with comments like “They want a pizza the action” and “They’re paying a lotta dough for this”.

The competition’s new name will feature for the first time in the build-up to the next round of group stage matches – on November 10-11.
And the brand will also become the “official pizza of the EFL”.
Burton stars gave away Papa John’s pizzas to families during half-term in response to calls for the Government to expand free meals to holidays.
The League One club passed on 100 lunches to families outside their Pirelli Stadium.

Papa John’s also donated 120 slices to help Burton’s effort.
FL Chief Commercial Officer Ben Wright said: “The EFL is delighted to welcome Papa John’s as title sponsor of the EFL Trophy and a new addition to the League’s portfolio of partners.
“As we continue to navigate through the challenging times that the coronavirus pandemic presents, it is testament to the growing appeal of the EFL that we are able to attract new partners and invest the sponsorship fee into the competition through payments to clubs, which is important during this difficult period.”

Man City will push for League Cup to be axed despite winning last three trophies to help cut number of games

MANCHESTER City will push for a cull of the League Cup to help cut the number of games for the Etihad outfit.
Pep Guardiola’s Carabao Cup holders have won the competition three years in a row and face Arsenal in a December quarter-final.

But despite their stunning success – with City having lifted the trophy five times in the past seven years – chief executive Ferran Soriano suggested it might be a necessary casualty if football is to move forward.
And he signalled that a fundamental realignment of the entire English football pyramid is required for it to become “sustainable”.
Soriano said: “There is a real problem of too many games being played by the clubs in the Premier League.
“There are ways to cut this. Some games need to be played to generate the fans and revenue for the whole football pyramid.

“But other games don’t add value and put the players at risk.
“The welfare of the players was a problem before Covid. Now it’s an extreme problem.”
Soriano, speaking at LeadersWeek.direct, added: “The English pyramid has significant problems and challenges.
“Traditionally, changing a football pyramid anywhere in the world is challenging.

“But there were problems in the past that are more evident now.
“One of the challenges is the EFL, the Championship, a business that is not sustainable.

“They were discussing salary caps and now they have been nudged, almost pushed, to solve the existing problems because of the crisis.
“It is a lot of water coming down on them and now even more problems have arrived.
“This is a good opportunity for the different elements of the football business to get together and solve these problems.”

Arsenal fans love Maitland-Niles’ ‘ice cold’ penalty technique vs Liverpool but Arteta fears it’ll give him heart attack

ARSENAL boss Mikel Arteta joked that Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ ice-cold penalty technique is going to give him a heart attack.
The versatile England midfielder has drawn plaudits from Gunners fans for his nerves of steel from spot-kicks.

The 23-year-old was at it again in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Anfield.
Maitland-Niles emerged from the bench to score from the spot with his trademark slow run-up before converting with ease.
It was the third time in a year the former Ipswich Town loanee has comfortably swept home a penalty against Liverpool.
Maitland-Niles converted against Reds keeper Adrian from the spot in front of The Kop during the same competition last October.
Liverpool’s No1 Alisson was no match either when he also produced a ridiculously-cool finish at Wembley in the Community Shield.
That followed a series of casual efforts in pre-season’s gone by, including an audacious Panenka against Atletico Madrid back in 2018.
His latest effort, which saw Adrian dive the wrong way, even cracked Maitland-Niles up and fans on social media had a field day.

One Twitter user wrote: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles turns into prime Pele when he gets to the penalty spot. Cold as ice.”

A second tweeted: “Has Maitland-Niles ever experienced ‘nerves’ in his life? I’m seriously starting to doubt it.”
A third added: “That smile, that damn smile. Maitland-Niles is something else from 12 yards.”
Speaking afterwards, Arsenal boss Arteta hailed the player for continuing to do the business from the spot – even if it gives him a fright.
He said: “I told him in the dressing room that I’m going to have a heart attack because with his body language… Jesus Christ!
“He puts it in the net which is the reason why he was one of the subs.”

One day I hope to have the confidence of Ainsley Maitland-Niles taking a penalty

Carabao Cup draw: Arsenal get Man City in quarter-finals while Man Utd travel to red-hot Everton

ARSENAL will take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after edging past Liverpool on penalties.
Moments after Bernd Leno’s heroics at Anfield, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta found out he would take on his former mentor, Pep Guardiola.

Arteta helped Man City win the Carabao Cup TWICE while Guardiola’s assistant, in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
But now he will lead his new side, Arsenal, against his former team in a bid to add to his silverware haul.
Arteta has already won the FA Cup and Community Shield since taking over from Unai Emery at the Emirates a year ago.
Elsewhere, red-hot Everton host Manchester United – who had earlier been drawn into the Champions League Group of Death.

Man Utd battered Brighton 3-0 to book their place in the last-eight, while the Toffees annihilated West Ham to keep up their scintillating form.
Tottenham will take a trip to Stoke – who beat Aston Villa away from home earlier on Thursday.
Spurs themselves edged past Chelsea on penalties in an exciting game – which included a row between Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard, as well as Eric Dier darting off the pitch mid-game to use the toilet.

And Brentford – who battered Fulham 3-0 in a repeat of the 2020 Championship play-off final – host Newcastle.

Liverpool 0 Arsenal 0 (4-5 on pens): Leno the hero as he saves Origi and Wilson penalties as Arsenal reach cup quarters

ON the day that new coronavirus restrictions were imposed on Merseyside, Arsenal put Liverpool into full lockdown.
It was the first time in 39 games that Jurgen Klopp’s Champions had failed to score at fortress Anfield, a remarkable run stretching all the way back to a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich back in February 2019.

And that was enough to take the rejuvenated Gunners through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after edging victory in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out.
Bernd Leno was the Arsenal hero, saving spot kicks from Divock Origi and Harry Wilson before Joe Willock’s decisive effort just crept past Liverpool keeper Adrian.
And the win was a blessed relief for Mikel Arteta’s team after conceding 33 goals in their previous nine visits to Anfield.
Now Arsenal will believe they can go all the way to add this trophy to the FA Cup and the Community Shield which they have already picked up in the past two months.

Not that Klopp will be losing too much sleep over this rare shut-out.
He has far bigger fish to fry this season and was probably still mulling over a Champions League draw which has pitched his team up against Ajax, Atalanta and Midtjylland.
Arsenal will learn their Europa League fate this afternoon but will be more convinced than ever that things are heading in the right direction.

This time last year Unai Emery was on the brink of the sack and Granit Xhaka thought he had burned his Arsenal bridges forever when he was subbed off against Crystal Palace and told the Emirates crowd to ‘eff off’.

    5

Bernd Leno was forced into a string of brilliant saves to keep Liverpool at bayCredit: PA:Press Association

But the Swiss midfielder has been completely rehabilitated under Arteta and this was the first time since that he has started the game as captain.
Three days after Xhaka’s infamous meltdown these teams fought out an extraordinary 5-5 draw at the same stage of the Carabao Cup.
It was one of the most extraordinary games in the competition’s history, finally settled in Liverpool’s favour on penalties.
But that was back in the pre-Covid days when more than 52,000 fans turned up to watch two reserve teams knocking seven bells out of each other.
So this one was never going to reach those levels of excitement, particularly coming just three days after meeting here in the Premier League.
Both managers predictably made wholesale changes to their starting line-ups, which meant a first Liverpool start for £45million Diogo Jota alongside Mo Salah and Takumi Minamino.
Yet it was Arsenal who showed the greater attacking intent early on and they could have been ahead as early as the 7th minute.
Xkaka’s pass opened up Liverpool’s high defensive line to the pace of Nicolas Pepe, who worked the ball to Eddie Nketiah via Joe Willock.

    5

But the young Gunners striker was caught in two minds as he was confronted by keeper Adrian and didn’t get any kind of conviction into his shot.
And for all their subsequent possession in promising areas, the visitors were unable to create too many more problems for Klopp’s men.
Not that Liverpool were any better and it took the best part of 45 minutes for them to seriously threaten.
Jota was convinced he should have had a penalty when he was brought down right on the edge of the area by Dani Ceballos.
But referee Kevin Friend called it dead right despite not having the assistance of VAR and awarded Liverpool a free-kick which was only partially cleared to Neco Williams.
The young Welshman’s chip over the top picked out Jota for a flying header which Bernd Leno parried straight to the lurking Minamino.
But the Japanese international couldn’t keep his shot down with the goal at his mercy and volleyed powerfully against the bar when he should have scored with virtually the last kick of the first-half.

And if Leno was less than convincing on that occasion, there was no doubting the quality of his 53rd minute save from Virgil van Dijk.
Klopp had planned to withdraw his captain at half-time but had a change of heart with the match so evenly poised at the break.
And Van Dijk almost rewarded his manager’s persistence when he applied a first time shot to Marko Grujic’s downward header which Leno did well to claw away at the base of the post.
That was the signal for Liverpool to really start turning the screw, with Jota’s deflected effort flying just wide before Grujic drew another sharp save from Leno.
Many Arsenal fans wondered if Arteta had sold the wrong keeper when he allowed Emiliano Martinez to sign for Aston Villa the other week.
But German international Leno certainly earned his pay last night with further saves to deny Jota and Grujic again.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though, and Rob Holding’s 70th minute bullet header threatened to break the deadlock but was directed straight at Adrian.
