Lincoln 2 Liverpool 7: Minamino and Shaqiri inspire Klopp’s kids to set up Arsenal clash with dominant win

MOVE over Chelsea, there’s a new bunch of kids in town.
Stamford Bridge has been the breeding ground for the best young talent coming through in England, but Liverpool now boast a crop ready set the world alight.

Jurgen Klopp watched on as his dazzling youngsters turned on the style to seal a fourth round clash with Arsenal and Mikel Arteta is sure to be a worried man on the evidence of this display.
It was men against boys – and youth came out on top.
Lincoln were actually supposed to provide a stern test for Klopp’s team containing four teenagers, having won four matches already this season.
Imps boss Michael Appleton had instructed his players to get stuck into the champions, to unsettle them and show them what senior football is all about.

The trouble is they just couldn’t get close enough to Liverpool to put their foot in.
Before the Anfield club splashed out on Thiago and Diogo Jota last week there had been claims from outside the club that there wasn’t enough strength in depth on Merseyside. Don’t believe a word of it.
For jostling in line for a place in Klopp’s Premier League plans is a group full of quality right across the pitch – from debut-making 19-year-old Rhys Williams to Harvey Elliott two years his junior.
And right now perhaps the best of the bunch is Curtis Jones, the local lad who has already started to make strides into the first team picture at Anfield.

The 19-year-old looks to have the kind of footballing brain only the best possess, and his ability on the ball is just as good.
He scored a brilliant double to put the Imps to the sword to cap a wonderful individual display which will surely give his manager food for thought as he tries to plot his way through the congested fixture list.
It was actually a golden oldie who set Liverpool on their way – Xherdan Shaqiri sending a ninth minute free-kick dipping and curling into the top corner.
At 28, and on the fringes of things now on Merseyside, his time at the club might be nearing an end but it was vintage Shaqiri providing a reminder of the quality he possesses in his left foot.

Takumi Minamino is just at the start of his Anfield career and will hope to be challenging Roberto Firmino for a starting role in the coming months
And he did his chances no harm with an emphatic finish to double the lead on 18 minutes as Lincoln were overrun.
Then up stepped Jones to stamp his mark on the game, firing his first by controlling a Divock Origi knock-down before whipping a shot into the top corner on 32 minutes.
Barely three minutes had passed before the teenager struck his second, and though it was aided by a deflection, the swivel of the hips to beat his man in the build-up was a joy to behold.

Liverpool were relentless, and they added a fifth within 20 seconds of the second half starting, Minamino following up after Elliott had been denied by keeper Alex Palmer.
This mad match wasn’t finished there, though as Tayo Edun pulled a goal back to the delight of those home supporters lucky enough to be in the LNER Stadium.
Marko Grujic fired a sixth for Liverpool on 65 minutes, but seconds later Lincoln found a second goal as Lewis Montsma headed in off the underside of the bar.
Jota then came off the bench for his debut following his £41million move from Wolves and saw a low drive just pass the wrong side of the post.
Origi made it seven with two minutes left, racing away on the break to shoot into the bottom corner.

Bristol City 0 Aston Villa 3: Traore scores wondergoal with first strike to seal Carabao Cup fourth-round clash vs Stoke

BERTRAND TRAORE scored a debut wondergoal as Aston Villa cruised past Bristol City into the Carabao Cup fourth round.
The 25-year-old winger signed for the Villans last week in a £19m deal, and only missed out on the club’s Premier League opener against Sheffield United due to work permit issues.

But ex-Chelsea graduate Traore has certainly hit the ground running with a sublime side-footed volley from 15 yards that lit up the third-round tie at Ashton Gate.
It was a strike that sets up a fourth round home tie against Stoke City.
Fellow new-boy Ollie Watkins and Anwar El Ghazi also netted – while Villa’s academy products Keinan Davis and Jacob Ramsey both produced impressive displays.
But it was Traore who stole the show, and looked like a man with a point to prove back in England after last appearing for the Blues during the 2015/16 campaign.

Villa started on the front foot and kept their foot on the pedal in the opening stages, with El Ghazi rattling off four shots in just 10 minutes.
But it was his fourth that earned Dean Smith’s men an early lead after some outrageous trickery from Davis to leave Robins defender Tommy Rowe on his backside in the box.
Davis, 22 – who has recently signed a new four-year deal with the club – then pulled back from the byline to find an unmarked El Ghazi who stroked it into the bottom corner.
Three minutes later and the lead was doubled in world class fashion. Ramsey drove from the half way line and found Traore just inside the box with a neat dink.

El Ghazi got the opener for the visitors in the comfortable 3-0 winCredit: Reuters

The Burkina Faso international struck it first time with a side-footed volley, which arrowed over keeper Max O’Leary and into the side netting.
A muted celebration, but Smith and assistant John Terry showed their appreciation from the touchline.
With the likes of Ollie Watkins and John McGinn on the bench – as well as Emiliano Martinez and skipper Jack Grealish not even in the squad – Villa now look to have real strength in depth.
Villa had a huge call for what looked a stone-wall penalty dismissed with 10 minutes left of the half after Ramsey was bundled over in the box as he was about to tap El Ghazi’s cross into an empty net.
But after the break Villa continued to dominate, and Traore continued to impress, this time as a creator as he fed through El Ghazi one-on-one but for a rushed finish.
Yet another chance fell to El Ghazi to kill the game with 20 minutes remaining – this time after a lovely lofted pass from Henri Lansbury – but smacked his effort straight at O’Leary.
But the arrival of Watkins from the bench in the 70th minute gave Villa a renewed clinical edge.
After grabbing his first for the club in the previous round against Burton Albion, he found the net once more, this time from close range just three minutes minute after coming on.

Carabao Cup round-up: Pickford howlers tarnish Everton win, Brighton set up Man Utd tie and Newcastle thrash Morecambe

KEEPER Jordan Pickford’s two howlers put question marks over his England future despite Everton’s 5-2 romp at Fleetwood – on a night of Premier League domination in the Carabao Cup.
Brighton set up a fourth-round clash with Manchester United, while two-goal Joelinton led Newcastle’s 7-0 destruction of ten-man League Two hosts Morecambe.

But it was a double disaster for Pickford at League One Fleetwood.
Brazil striker Richarlison struck twice for Everton before Pickford PASSED the ball to home sub Mark Duffy for a simple reply.
Alex Iwobi made it 3-1 but Pickford then let in a Callum Camps bicycle kick that was straight at him.
Even further Toffees’ goals from Bernard and Moise Kean could not detract from Pickford’s elementary errors.

    JOELINTON STUNNER
Meanwhile, Iranian Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Argentinian Alexis Mac Allister sunk Preston 2-0 – each also having netted in Brighton’s 4-0 second-round defeat of Portsmouth last Thursday.
Midfielder Mac Allister had been goalless until then after arriving on the south coast in January 2019.
And Newcastle netted five times before the interval for the first time in 27 years.
Joelinton’s 25-yard top-corner special for his second and the Toon’s fourth goal eclipsed even Jacob Murphy’s curler just before it at Morecambe.

Miguel Almiron also scored as Newcastle led 4-0, before Toumani Diagouraga’s red card made more goals inevitable.

They duly came from Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal as Newcastle earned a trip to Newport.
Kai Havertz’s treble spearheaded Chelsea’s 6-0 crushing of Barnsley and Arsenal won 2-0 at Leicester.
And Fulham’s dominant 2-0 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday teed up a tasty trip to West London neighbours Brentford, who they beat in last month’s Championship play-off final.
Aboubakar Kamara and Bobby Decordova-Reid pounced from close range on nine and 32 minutes respectively.

Josh Brownhill fired a stupendous 30-yard opener for Burnley at Millwall, before Matej Vydra doubled the winning margin late on.
The Clarets will host Manchester City or Bournemouth in the last 16.
And Stoke will go to Bristol City or Aston Villa after Tyrese Campbell’s clinical only goal of the game against Gillingham in the 37th minute, courtesy of a sublime pass from midfield orchestrator Jordan Thompson. More

Nketiah pushes for Arsenal starting spot but he’ll need to be at his best ahead of potential Liverpool double-header

EDDIE NKETIAH is doing what all good strikers do… score goals.
With two in his last two, he will be knocking on Mikel Arteta’s door to get a starting spot next time out.

    3

Eddie Nketiah will be hoping his goals against West Ham and Leicester will earn him a start in the Premier League at Anfield on MondayCredit: Getty Images – Getty

But has he done enough to convince his boss to start him at Anfield on Monday night – and then potentially again just a few days later?
If he has, he will need to be at his best up against Virgil van Dijk & Co.
The Arsenal striker, 21, turned up when his side desperately needed him to find a late winner off the bench against West Ham.
And given a start at Leicester tonight he sealed the deal with a minute to go, completing a 2-0 win.
Nketiah’s 90th-minute poacher’s finish will not win any goal-of-the-season awards that’s for certain.
Mind you, they all count – even when falling over on to the goal line.
The Gunners academy graduate, though, knows nothing speaks volumes more for front men than goals.

So Arteta will be impressed by his man’s predatory instincts to capitalise on Danny Ward’s hesitancy.

    3

Alexandre Lacazette has two goals in two matches so far this season so will be keen to continue his streak against the championsCredit: AP:Associated Press

A goal up going into injury time, it would have been easy for Nketiah to give up on the loose ball and allow the Welshman to gather.
Unfortunately for Nketiah, he is battling for the No9 spot with Alexandre Lacazette.
And the Frenchman has not done too much wrong so far this season.
He got the opening goal of the Premier League campaign at Fulham and backed it up by heading home in the Hammers victory.
Nketiah did get a run in the starting XI towards the back end of last season ahead of Lacazette, but failed to really take advantage – scoring just once after the restart.
So far, understandably while they are both finding the net, it looks as though Arteta may start his £52million man in the Premier League and give Nketiah the nod in the cups.
That makes perfect sense with the bombardment of fixtures on three fronts during a mad autumn calendar in this condensed season – however, Carabao Cup wins for Jurgen Klopp’s side over Lincoln and Arsenal in the next week could alter the Spaniard’s plans.
But if Arteta did mix things up and bring Nketiah in from the outset at Anfield in the league clash on Monday, the pressure would be on for the England Under-21 star to deliver.
And one thing is for certain, Alisson won’t be gifting him freebies like Ward did at the King Power tonight.

Leicester 0 Arsenal 2: Fuchs own goal and Nketiah prove difference as Gunners set up potential Liverpool Carabao Cup tie

ONE major criticism of Arsene Wenger was that he wanted every Arsenal goal to be a breathtaking masterpiece.
Well after Mikel Arteta’s men had won ugly in the Premier League against West Ham, they reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup by scoring two absolute munters here.

    7

Eddie Nketiah grabbed the second late on in comical fashion as he fell over while sticking past Danny WardCredit: Reuters

Leicester’s veteran defender Christian Fuchs bundled into his own net and Eddie Nketiah added a late second after falling over, to earn Arsenal the dubious prize of a likely trip to Anfield – provided Liverpool defeat Lincoln City tomorrow.
Arsenal already have to visit the champions in the league on Monday, so next week promises to be a major test of Arteta’s squad.
Arteta’s Arsenal can still be easy on the eye – and even with seven changes to the Spaniard’s starting line-up, they outplayed a second-string Leicester.
But they are now acquiring the knack of digging out victories when the going gets arduous.
It is a happy habit which has been largely lacking ever since Wenger’s Invincibles broke up and it augurs well for their hard-nosed young manager.
Arteta refused to include either of his outcasts, Mesut Ozil or Matteo Guendouzi, and saw some pleasing football from a youthful side.
With two wins out of two in the Premier League and a Europa League campaign looming for both, this competition was the priority of neither manager.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers, whose side reached the semi-finals last term, changed his entire starting line-up.

He gave a full debut for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – a useful midfielder rather than a National Trust stately home.
Arteta stuck with only four of the men who had squeezed past the Hammers on Saturday, yet there was no lack of attacking quality.
Despite their dominance of the FA Cup, Arsenal haven’t won the League Cup for 27 years, when the competition was sponsored by Coca-Cola and nobody had heard of Wenger.
But the Gunners, in their apparently blood-stained away kit, had the first sniff when Reiss Nelson won possession and cut in from the left only for Danny Ward to tip his rising shot onto the roof of the net.
Bernd Leno had to be quick off his line to smother a Kelechi Iheanacho effort.
But Arsenal were slick, fluid and lively in attack – Bukayo Saka skinned Marc Albrighton but Joe Willock could not connect with his cross.
Then a stonewall penalty for Arsenal, which was somehow stonewalled by myopic ref Peter Bankes.
Nketiah played in Saka, who was clearly bundled over by Daniel Amartey – leaving Arsenal’s team and bench to scream their appeals in vain.

    7

    7

Bukayo Saka was a threat as he bombed forwards and got into the Leicester boxCredit: PA:Press Association
Nelson forced another save from Ward then screwed a shot wide when left unmarked from a corner.
But the one class act in this Leicester side, James Maddison – making his first start since July 1 – began to make his mark.
Having comprehensively skewered Ainsley Maitland-Niles with some saucy wing-play, Maddison cut in from the left and curled a delicious shot against the inside of the far post.
But on 57 minutes Arsenal got the opener they had deserved with a huge dollop of fortune.
Nicolas Pepe forced his way clear on the right, had one shot saved by Ward and then struck the post from the rebound, his effort cannoning in off the unsuspecting Fuchs as he and Amartey attempted to clear.
Nketiah thought he had Arsenal’s second when he lobbed Ward, only for Wes Morgan to head expertly off the line.
Foxes sub Ayoze Perez headed wide when he should have converted Albrighton’s free-kick.
But after Hector Bellerin arrived as a late sub he teed up Nketiah, who stumbled, fell and still managed to score.
It was no oil painting but you don’t win trophies for artistic impression in this game.
